We introduce the notion of L 2-rigidity for von Neumann algebras, a generalization of property (T) which can be viewed as an analogue for the vanishing of 1-cohomology into the left regular representation of a group. We show that L 2-rigidity passes to normalizers and is satisfied by nonamenable II1 factors which are non-prime, have property Γ, or are weakly rigid. As a consequence we obtain that if M is a free product of diffuse von Neumann algebras, or if M=LΓ where Γ is a finitely generated group with β1 (2)(Γ)>0, then any nonamenable regular subfactor of M is prime and does not have properties Γ or (T). In particular this gives a new approach for showing solidity for a free group factor thus recovering a well known recent result of N. Ozawa.  相似文献

We exhibit an interesting new phenomenon concerning certain triangle subgroups Δ of Kleinian groups Γ. Namely the hyperbolic plane Π stabilized by Δ has a precisely invariant tubular neighbourhood. Thus the corresponding 2-orbifoldF 2=∏/Γ is always embedded in the hyperbolic 3-orbifoldM 3=ℍ3/Γ. We deduce that any two such triangle groups can algebraically intersect only in a finite cyclic subgroup. We give sharp estimates for the radius of these tubular neighbourhoods and present applications concerning the estimation of co-volumes of Kleinian groups containing these triangle subgroups. for J. For n≥7, it is shown how to construct examples of smooth, compact Riemannian manifolds (N n +1,g), with non-trivial n dimensional integer homology, such that for some Γ∈H n (N,Z), the hypersurface (n-current) M, which minimizes area among all hypersurfaces representing Γ, has singularities. The singular set of M consists of two isolated points, and the tangent cone at these points can be prescribed as any strictly stable, strictly minimizing, regular cone. To my knowledge these are the first examples of codimension one homological minimizers with singularities. Oblatum: 3-I-1997 & 13-II-1998 / Published online: 18 September 1998  相似文献

If P is a pleated plane in 3-dimensional hyperbolic space H 3 and α a geodesic in its intrinsic metric we define B(P,α), the average bending of P in the direction α. We show that if P is a convex pleated plane embedded in H 3 then B(P,α)≤K for some universal K. Furthermore if PΓ is a boundary component of the convex hull of a quasi-Fuchsian group Γ then B(PΓ,α)=B(Γ) almost everywhere, where B(Γ) is a constant times the length of the bending lamination βΓ of the pleated surface X Γ=PΓ/Γ. We use these to prove a number of results about quasi-Fuchsian groups including a universal bound on the Lipschitz constant for the map to infinity and a bound on the length of βΓ by a constant times the Euler characteristic of X Γ. We study the weighted integral transform on a compact manifold with boundary over a smooth family of curves Γ. We prove generic injectivity and a stability estimate under the condition that the conormal bundle of Γ covers T * M. Consider a closed manifold M immersed in Rm. Suppose that the trivial bundle M × Rm = T M ⊗ ν M is equipped with an almost metric connection ~ ∇ which almost preserves the decomposition of M × Rm into the tangent and the normal bundle. Assume moreover that the difference Γ = ∂~∇ with the usual derivative ∂ in Rm is almost ~∇-parallel. Then M admits an extrinsically homogeneous immersion into Rm. LetG be a unimodular Lie group, Γ a co-compact discrete subgroup ofG and ‘a’ a semisimple element ofG. LetT a be the mapgΓ →ag Γ:G/Γ →G/Γ. The following statements are pairwise equivalent: (1) (T a, G/Γ,θ) is weak-mixing. (2) (T a, G/Γ) is topologically weak-mixing. (3) (G u, G/Γ) is uniquely ergodic. (4) (G u, G/Γ,θ) is ergodic. (5) (G u, G/Γ) is point transitive. (6) (G u, G/Γ) is minimal. If in additionG is semisimple with finite center and no compact factors, then the statement “(T a, G/Γ,θ) is ergodic” may be added to the above list. Let M be a compact n-dimensional Riemannian orbifold of Ricci curvature ≥n−1. We prove that for 1 ≤kn, the k th nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian on M is equal to the dimension n if and only if M is isometric to the k-times spherical suspension over the quotient S n k }Γ of the unit (nk)-sphere by a finite group Γ⊂O(nk+1) acting isometrically on S n k ⊂ℝ n k +. We define a prime ΓM-module for a Γ-ringM. It is shown that a subsetP ofM is a prime ideal ofM if and only ifP is the annihilator of some prime ΓM-moduleG. s-prime ideals ofM were defined by the first author. We defines-modules ofM, analogous to a concept defined by De Wet for rings. It is shown that a subsetQ ofM is ans-prime ideal ofM if and only ifQ is the annihilator of somes-moduleG ofM. Relationships between prime ΓM-modules and primeR-modules are established, whereR is the right operator ring ofM. Similar results are obtained fors-modules.  相似文献

Let A be the closed unbounded operator inL p(G) that is associated with an elliptic boundary value problem for a bounded domainG. We prove the existence of a spectral projectionE determined by the set Γ = {λ;θ 1≦argλ≦θ 2} and show thatAE is the infinitesimal generator of an analytic semigroup provided that the following conditions hold: 1<p<∞; the boundary ϖΓ of Γ is contained in the resolvent setp(A) ofA;π/2θ<θ 23π/2 ; and there exists a constantc such that (I)││(λ-A)-1││≦c/│λ│ for λ∈ϖΓ. The following consequence is obtained: Suppose that there exist constantsM andc such that λ∈p(A) and estimate (I) holds provided that |λ|≧M and Re λ=0. Then there exist bounded projectionE andE + such thatA is completely reduced by the direct sum decompositionL p(G)=ELp (G) ⊕E+Lp (G) and each of the operatorsAE and—AE + is the infinitestimal generator of an analytic semigroup.  相似文献

Divisible convex sets IV: Boundary structure in dimension 3 Let Ω be an indecomposable properly convex open subset of the real projective 3-space which is divisible i.e. for which there exists a torsion free discrete group Γ of projective transformations preserving Ω such that the quotient M := Γ\Ω is compact. We study the structure of M and of ∂Ω, when Ω is not strictly convex: The union of the properly embedded triangles in Ω projects in M onto an union of finitely many disjoint tori and Klein bottles which induces an atoroidal decomposition of M. Every non extremal point of ∂Ω is on an edge of a unique properly embedded triangle in Ω and the set of vertices of these triangles is dense in the boundary of Ω (see Figs. 1 to 4). Moreover, we construct examples of such divisible convex open sets Ω.   相似文献

For a given boundary Γ in Rn consisting of arcs and vertices, with two or more arcs meeting at each vertex, we treat the problem of estimating the area density of a soap film-like surface Σ spanning Γ. Σ is assumed locally to minimize area, or more generally, to be strongly stationary for area with respect to Γ. We introduce a notion of total curvature (Γ) for such graphs, or nets, Γ. We show that 2π times the area density of Σ at any point is less than or equal to (Γ). For n=3, these density estimates imply, for example, that if (Γ)≤3.649π, then the only possible singularities of a piecewise smooth (M,0,δ)-minimizing set Σ are curves, along which three smooth sheets of Σ meet with equal angles of 120°. On maps between modular Jacobians and Jacobians of Shimura curves   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Fix a squarefree integer N, divisible by an even number of primes, and let Γ′ be a congruence subgroup of level M, where M is prime to N. For each D dividing N and divisible by an even number of primes, the Shimura curve X D 0(N/D) ∩ Γ′) associated to the indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant D and Γ0(N/D) ∩ Γ′-level structure is well defined, and we can consider its Jacobian J D 0(N/D) ∩ Γ′). Let J D denote the N/D-new subvariety of this Jacobian. By the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence [J-L] and Faltings’ isogeny theorem [Fa], there are Hecke-equivariant isogenies among the various varieties J D defined above. However, since the isomorphism of Jacquet-Langlands is noncanonical, this perspective gives no information about the isogenies so obtained beyond their existence. In this paper, we study maps between the varieties J D in terms of the maps they induce on the character groups of the tori corresponding to the mod p reductions of these varieties for p dividing N. Our characterization of such maps in these terms allows us to classify the possible kernels of maps from J D to J D, for D dividing D′, up to support on a small finite set of maximal ideals of the Hecke algebra. This allows us to compute the Tate modules J D of J D at all non-Eisenstein of residue characteristic l > 3. These computations have implications for the multiplicities of irreducible Galois representations in the torsion of Jacobians of Shimura curves; one such consequence is a “multiplicity one” result for Jacobians of Shimura curves.  相似文献

Let f:S 2R 3 be a generic smooth immersion. The skeleton of f is the following triple (Γ, D, p): Γ ⊂ R 3 is the 1-polyhedron of singular points of f, D = f−1(Γ) ⊂ S 2 is also a 1-polyhedron, and p : D → Γ, x ↦ f(x), is the projection. For triples of the form (D,Γ,p), where Γ has at most four vertices, we give an iff-condition under which the triple is the skeleton of a smooth immersion f : S 2R 3. Let the finitely generated group Γ be a split extension of the Abelian group M by an Abelian group Q, suppose M is torsion free, and assume Γ∈F Pm, m≥2. Then the invariant ∑ c M is m-tame. Let M be a closed, connected surface and let Γ be a conformal class of metrics on M with each metric normalized to have area V. For a metric g Γ, denote the area element by dV and the Laplace–Beltrami operator by Δ g . We define the Robin mass m(x) at the point x M to be the value of the Green’s function G(x, y) at y = x after the logarithmic singularity has been subtracted off. The regularized trace of Δ g −1 is then defined by trace Δ−1 = ∫ M m dV. (This essentially agrees with the zeta functional regularization and is thus a spectral invariant.) Let be the Laplace–Beltrami operator on the round sphere of volume V. We show that if there exists g Γ with trace Δ g −1 < trace then the minimum of trace Δ−1 over Γ is attained by a metric in Γ for which the Robin mass is constant. Otherwise, the minimum of trace Δ−1 over Γ is equal to trace . In fact we prove these results in the general setting where M is an n-dimensional closed, connected manifold and the Laplace–Beltrami operator is replaced by any non-negative elliptic operator A of degree n which is conformally covariant in the sense that for the metric g we have . In this case the role of is assumed by the Paneitz or GJMS operator on the round n-sphere of volume V. Explicitly these results are logarithmic HLS inequalities for (M, g). By duality we obtain analogs of the Onofri–Beckner theorem. Received: February 2006, Accepted: March 2006  相似文献

Let Γ be a fuchsian group which preserves the unit disc Δ and hence also its complement Δ* in the Riemann sphere . The Bers embedding represents the Teichm=:uller space T(Γ) of Γ in the space (B (Δ*, Γ) of bounded quadratic differentials for Γ in Δ*. Then, T(Γ) is included in the closed ball centred at the origin of radius 6 inB*, Γ) with respect to the norm employed in a paper by Nehari [The Schwarzian derivative and Schlicht functions; Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 55 (1949), 545–551]. In other words the outradiuso(Γ) ofT(Γ) is not greater than 6. The purpose of this paper is to give a complete characterization of a fuchsian group Γ for which the outradiuso(Γ) ofT(Γ) attains this extremal value 6. The main theorem is: Let Γ be a fuchsian group preserving Δ*. Then the outradiuso(Γ) of the Teichmüller spaceT(Γ) equals 6 if and only if for any positive numberd, either (i) there exists a hyperbolic disc of radiusd precisely invariant under the trivial subgroup, or (ii) there exists the collar of widthd about the axis of a hyperbolic element of Γ. Let A be a symmetric hyperbolic matrix in SL(2, ℤ) and Γ the subgroup of SL(2, ℤ) generated by A. We aim to study the infinitesimal rigidity of the standard action of Γ on the torus . More precisely, we will consider the Sobolev Ws–infinitesimal rigidity of this action (that is to determine if the cohomology space H1(Γ,Ws (T M)) is trivial or not), and show that it is Ws–infinitesimally rigid only if 0 ≤ s < 1. A consequence will be that this action is not C–infinitesimally rigid. *I would like to thank A. El Kacimi for introducing me this problem about which we had many fruitful discussions.  相似文献
