The dispersion process of single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) by using sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (NaDDBS) was studied by means of surface tension measurements, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM). The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the concentration where the surface tension begins to drop increase by the presence of SWNT. The isotherm of NaDDBS amount adsorbed on SWNT shows the plateau region at 0.2-6 mM and the saturated region above 40 mM. The external surface of SWNT bundle is fully covered with adsorbed NaDDBS at the plateau region, showing that SWNTs can be dispersed with the bundle form. On the other hand, SWNTs are dispersed in individual tubes at the saturated region, where the adsorption amount corresponds to coating of individual tube surfaces with NaDDBS. This dispersion state was confirmed by SEM and TEM observations. The effect of the dispersion state of SWNTs on radial breathing mode in Raman spectrum gave inherent peak shifts, being the in situ evidences on the step-wise dispersion mechanism of the SWNT bundle to the individual tubes.  相似文献

We review the recent advances in dispersing single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) using amphiphilic surfactants in aqueous solutions. Three aspects are discussed. (1) On the organization of surfactant molecules with SWNTs, new insights at the microscopic level arise from electron microscopy and detailed computer simulation studies. (2) Quantitative measurements, such as molecular interactions between functional groups and SWNTs, the coverage of surfactant on SWNTs in solution, the charge state of the SWNT/surfactant complex, and the degree of dispersion are critical for better understanding dispersion mechanisms and for the further development of dispersion strategies. (3) The thermodynamic driving forces and the role of metastability in the structure of surfactant dispersed SWNT suspensions are analyzed. An outlook on practical and fundamental issues is also presented.  相似文献

The 1-hexadecyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide (hvimBr), a water-soluble long-chain imidazolium ionic liquid (IL) with surfactant properties, showed the ability to produce stable homogeneous aqueous dispersions of pristine Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWNTs). The purpose of this study is the improvement of SWNT dispersing ability by assessing the effect of different groups in position 3 of the imidazole ring. In this regard structural analogues were synthesized and, after characterization, their capability to dissolve SWNTs in water was investigated. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to provide a semi-quantitative indication of the affinity of each dispersing agent toward SWNT and to attempt an explanation of the experimental results.  相似文献

We report herein the template-directed synthesis, characterization, and electric properties of single-walled carbon nanotube- (SWNT-) based coaxial nanowires, that is, core (SWNT)-shell (conducting polypyrrole and polyaniline) nanowires. The SWNTs were first dispersed in aqueous solutions containing cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or nonionic surfactant poly(ethylene glycol) mono-p-nonyl phenyl ether (O pi-10). Each individual nanotube (or small bundle) was then encased in its own micellelike envelope with hydrophobic surfactant groups orientated toward the nanotube and hydrophilic groups orientated toward the solution. And thus a hydrophobic region within the micelle/SWNT (called a micelle/SWNT hybrid template) was formed. Insertion and growth of pyrrole or aniline monomers in this hybrid template, upon removal of the surfactant, produce coaxial structures with a SWNT center and conducting polypyrrole or polyaniline coating. Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy were used to characterize the composition and the structures of these coaxial nanowires. The results revealed that the micellar molecules used could affect the surface morphologies of the resulting coaxial nanowires but not the molecular structures of the corresponding conducting polymers. Electric properties testing indicated that the SWNTs played the key roles in the conducting polymer/SWNT composites during electron transfer in the temperature range 77 K to room temperature. Compared with the SWNT network embedded in the conducting polymers, the composites within which SWNTs were coated perfectly by the identical conducting polymers exhibited higher barrier heights during electron transfer.  相似文献

Uniform dispersion and strong interfacial interaction are two critical prerequisites for application of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in polymer composites. To endow the composites with multifunctional feature, no damage on the chemical/electronic structure of SWNTs is also usually required. With these ends in view, two epoxide‐containing pyrene derivatives (EpPys) were designed, synthesized, and used as reactive noncovalent dispersants for developing multifunctional epoxy/SWNT composites. One having longer chain length between epoxide group and pyrene moiety, that is, EpPy‐16, shows higher dispersing efficiency and provides the nanotube dispersion with better stability, thus picking up for subsequent studies. Systematic characterization on SWNT/EpPy‐16 hybrid demonstrates that 13.2 wt % of EpPy‐16 is adsorbed on the SWNT surface through strong π‐stacking interaction, and intrinsic electronic structure of SWNTs is basically reserved. The solution‐based process adopted here preserves the good SWNT dispersing state in dispersion into the composites. Simultaneously, enhanced interfacial interaction is also realized by using EpPy‐16, which interacts noncovalently with SWNT but connects covalently to epoxy network. As a result, the composites acquire 37 and 22% increments in tensile strength and Young's modulus, respectively, relative to that of neat resin. A low‐electrical percolation threshold of 0.1 wt % SWNTs and improved thermal properties were also observed. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are promising materials for in vitro and in vivo biological applications due to their high surface area and inherent near infrared photoluminescence and Raman scattering properties. Here, we use density gradient centrifugation to separate SWNTs by length and degree of bundling. Following separation, we observe a peak in photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) and Raman scattering intensity where SWNT length is maximized and bundling is minimized. Individualized SWNTs are found to exhibit high PL QY and high resonance-enhanced Raman scattering intensity. Fractions containing long, individual SWNTs exhibit the highest PL QY and Raman scattering intensities, compared to fractions containing single, short SWNTs or SWNT bundles. Intensity gains of approximately ~1.7 and 4-fold, respectively, are obtained compared with the starting material. Spectroscopic analysis reveals that SWNT fractions at higher displacement contain increasing proportions of SWNT bundles, which causes reduced optical transition energies and broadening of absorption features in the UV-Vis-NIR spectra, and reduced PL QY and Raman scattering intensity. Finally, we adsorb small aromatic species on "bright," individualized SWNT sidewalls and compare the resulting absorption, PL and Raman scattering effects to that of SWNT bundles. We observe similar effects in both cases, suggesting aromatic stacking affects the optical properties of SWNTs in an analogous way to SWNT bundles, likely due to electronic structure perturbations, charge transfer, and dielectric screening effects, resulting in reduction of the excitonic optical transition energies and exciton lifetimes.  相似文献

We describe herein the synthesis of a triptycene-based surfactant designed with the ability to solubilise single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and C(60) in water through non-covalent interactions. Furthermore, an amphiphilic naphthalene-based surfactant with the same ability to solubilise SWNTs and C(60) has also been prepared. The compounds synthesised were designed with either two ionic or non-ionic tails to ensure a large number of supramolecular interactions with the solvent, thereby promoting strong solubilisation. The surfactants produced stable suspensions in which the SWNTs are dispersed and the surfactant/SWNT complexes formed are stable for more than one year. UV/Vis/NIR absorption spectroscopy, TEM and AFM were employed to probe the solubilisation properties of the dispersion of surfactants and SWNTs in water.  相似文献

We examine the Breit-Wigner-Fano (BWF) line shape in the Raman spectra of carbon single-wall nanotubes (SWNTs) dispersed in aqueous suspensions. Bundling and electronic effects are studied by comparing undoped SWNTs (C-SWNTs) to boron-doped nanotubes (B-SWNTs) in a variety of different surfactant solutions. For SWNTs dispersed with nonionic surfactants that are less effective in debundling than ionic surfactants, the Raman spectra retain a large BWF feature. However, we demonstrate that even for SWNTs dispersed as isolated nanotubes by ionic surfactants the BWF feature may be present and that the intensity of the BWF is highly sensitive to the specific surfactant. In particular, surfactants with electron-donating groups tend to enhance the BWF feature. Also, modification of the SWNT electronic properties by boron doping leads to enhanced surfactant dispersion relative to undoped C-SWNTs and also to modification of the BWF feature. These observations are in agreement with reports demonstrating an enhancement of the BWF by bundling but also agree with reports that suggest electron donation can enhance the BWF feature even for isolated SWNTs. Importantly, these results serve to caution against using the lack or presence of a BWF feature as an independent measure of SWNT aggregation in surfactant dispersions.  相似文献

The dynamic adsorption behavior of mixtures of the cationic polymer poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) [poly(dmdaac)] and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) has been studied at the expanding liquid surface of an overflowing cylinder. A combination of ellipsometry and external reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to measure the adsorbed amounts of poly(dmdaac) and SDS as a function of the bulk surfactant concentration for various polymer concentrations in the range 0-0.2 g dm-3. Laser Doppler velocimetry was used to determine the surface age, which was approximately 1 s for solutions where the polymer adsorbed. The interfacial behavior is rationalized in terms of competition between surface activity and mass transport to the expanding surface. At low surfactant concentrations, adsorption of both poly(dmdaac) and SDS is enhanced as a result of the formation in solution of polymer-surfactant complexes that are more surface active than either component alone. The rate of adsorption of these complexes is diffusion-controlled, and their interfacial composition remains constant at three dmdaac units per SDS molecule over a 5-fold change in the surfactant concentration. For the higher polymer concentrations studied, the complexes saturate the air-water interface: the adsorbed amount is independent of the polymer concentration and remains constant also over a factor of 5 in the surfactant concentration. Once the number of bound surfactant molecules per dmdaac monomer exceeds 0.3, the complexes begin to form large aggregates, which are not surface active due to their slower mass transport. The adsorbed amount decreases rapidly on approach to the equivalence point (one SDS molecule per dmdaac monomer), and when it is reached, only a very small amount of material remains at the interface. At still higher surfactant concentrations, the free SDS adsorbs but there is no adsorbed poly(dmdaac). The dynamic adsorption data are compared with equilibrium measurements of the same system by Staples et al. (Langmuir 2002, 18, 5147), which show very different surface compositions and no significant change in surface coverage at the equivalence point.  相似文献

Surfactant adsorption has been shown to have a passivating effect on the electrode surface during anodic stripping voltammetric measurements. In the present work the feasibility of sono-anodic stripping analysis for the determination of copper in aqueous media contaminated with surfactant has been studied at an unmodified bare glassy carbon electrode. We illustrate the deleterious effect of three common surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), dodecyl pyridinium chloride (DPC) and Triton-X 100 (TX-100) on conventional electroanalysis. The analogous sono-electroanalytical response was investigated for each surfactant at ultrasound intensities above and below the cavitation threshold. The enhancement in the stripping signal observed is attributed to the increased mass transport due to acoustic streaming and above the cavitation threshold the intensity of cavitational events is significantly increased leading to shearing of adsorbed surfactant molecules from the surface. As a result accurate analyses for SDS concentrations up to 100 ppm are possible, with analytical signals visible in solutions of SDS and TX-100 of 1000 ppm. Analysis is reported in high concentration of surfactant with use of sono-solvent double extraction. The power of this technique is clearly illustrated by the ability to obtain accurate measurements of copper concentration from starting solutions containing 1000 ppm SDS or TX-100. This was also exemplified by analysis of the low concentration 0.3 microM Cu(II) solution giving a percentage recovery of 94% in the presence of 1000 ppm SDS or TX-100.  相似文献

Simulation of adsorption of DNA on carbon nanotubes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We report molecular dynamics simulations of DNA adsorption on a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) in an aqueous environment. We have modeled a DNA segment with 12 base pairs (Dickerson dodecamer) and a (8,8) SWNT in water, with counterions to maintain total charge neutrality. Simulations show that DNA binds to the external surface of an uncharged or positively charged SWNT on a time scale of a few hundred picoseconds. The hydrophobic end groups of DNA are attracted to the hydrophobic SWNT surface of uncharged SWNTs, while the hydrophilic backbone of DNA does not bind to the uncharged SWNT. The binding mode of DNA to charged SWNTs is qualitatively different from uncharged SWNTs. The phosphodiester groups of the DNA backbone are attracted to a positively charged SWNT surface while DNA does not adsorb on negatively charged SWNTs. There is no evidence for canonical double-stranded DNA wrapping around either charged or uncharged SWNTs on the very short time scales of the simulations. The adsorption process appears to have negligible effect on the internal stacking structure of the DNA molecule but significantly affects the A to B form conversion of A-DNA. The adsorption of A-DNA onto an uncharged SWNT inhibits the complete relaxation of A-DNA to B-DNA within the time scale of the simulations. In contrast, binding of the A-DNA onto a positively charged SWNT may promote slightly the A to B conversion.  相似文献

Dielectrophoresis has received considerable attention for separating nanotubes according to electronic types. Here we examine the effects of surface conductivity of semiconducting single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT), induced by ionic surfactants, on the sign of dielectrophoretic force. The crossover frequency of semiconducting SWNT increases rapidly as the conductivity ratio between the particle and medium increases, leading to an incomplete separation of ionic surfactant suspended SWNT at an electric field frequency of 10 MHz. To reduce the conductivity ratio, the surface charge of SWNT is neutralized by an equimolar mixture of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), resulting in negative dielectrophoresis of semiconducting species at 10 MHz. A comparative Raman spectroscopy study shows a nearly complete separation of metallic SWNT.  相似文献

We have examined the structure and function of two enzymes, alpha-chymotrypsin (CT) and soybean peroxidase (SBP), adsorbed onto single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). SBP retained up to 30% of its native activity upon adsorption, while the adsorbed CT retained only 1% of its native activity. Analysis of the secondary structure of the proteins via FT-IR spectroscopy revealed that both enzymes undergo structural changes upon adsorption, with substantial secondary structural perturbation observed for CT. Consistent with these results, AFM images of the adsorbed enzymes indicated that SBP retains its native three-dimensional shape while CT appears to unfold on the SWNT surface. This study represents the first in depth investigation of protein structure and function on carbon nanotubes, which is critical in designing optimal carbon nanotube-protein conjugates.  相似文献

The formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of adsorbed cationic or anionic surfactant molecules on atomically flat H-terminated Si(111) surfaces in aqueous solutions was investigated by in situ AFM measurements, using octyl trimethylammonium chloride (C8TAC), dodecyl trimethylammonium chloride (C12TAC), octadecyl trimethylammonium chloride (C18TAC)) sodium dodecyl sulfate (STS), and sodium tetradecyl sulfate (SDS). The adsorbed surfactant layer with well-ordered molecular arrangement was formed when the Si(111) surface was in contact with 1.0x10(-4) M C18TAC, whereas a slightly roughened layer was formed for 1.0x10(-4) M C8TAC and C12TAC. On the other hand, the addition of alcohols to solutions of 1.0x10(-4) M C8TAC, C12TAC, or SDS improved the molecular arrangement in the adsorbed surfactant layer. Similarly, the addition of a salt, KCl, also improved the molecular arrangement for both the cationic and anionic surfactant layers. Moreover, the adsorbed surfactant layer with a well-ordered structure was formed in a solution of mixed cationic (C12TAC) and anionic (SDS) surfactants, though each surfactant alone did not form the well-ordered layer. These results were all explained by taking into account electrostatic repulsion between ionic head groups of adsorbed surfactant molecules as well as hydrophobic interaction between their alkyl chains, which increases with the increasing chain length, together with the increase in the hydrophobic interaction or the decrease in the electrostatic repulsion by incorporating alcohol molecules into the adsorbed surfactant layer, the decrease in the electrostatic repulsion by increasing the concentration of counterions, and the decrease in the electrostatic repulsion by alternate arrangement of cationic and anionic surfactant molecules. The present results have revealed various factors to form the well-ordered adsorbed surfactant layers on the H-Si(111) surface, which have a possibility of realizing the third generation surfaces with flexible structures and functions easily adaptable to circumstances.  相似文献

Aqueous surfactant suspensions of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are very sensitive to environmental conditions. For example, the photoluminescence of semiconducting SWNTs varies significantly with concentration, pH, or salinity. In most cases, these factors restrict the range of applicability of SWNT suspensions. Here, we report a simple strategy to obtain stable and highly luminescent individualized SWNTs at pH values ranging from 1 to 11, as well as in highly saline buffers. This strategy relies on combining SWNTs previously suspended in sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) with biocompatible poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), which can be polymerized in situ to entrap the SWNT-SDBS micelles. We present a model that accounts for the photoluminescence stability of these suspensions based on PVP morphological changes at different pH values. Moreover, we demonstrate the effectiveness of these highly stable suspensions by imaging individual luminescent SWNTs on the surface of live human embryonic kidney cells (HEK cells).  相似文献

The diffusivities of methane in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are investigated at various temperatures and pressures using classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations complemented with grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations. The carbon atoms at the nanotubes are structured according to the (m, m) armchair arrangement and the interactions between each methane molecule and all atoms of the confining surface are explicitly considered. It is found that the parallel self-diffusion coefficient of methane in an infinitely long, defect-free SWNT decreases dramatically as the temperature falls, especially at subcritical temperatures and high loading of gas molecules when the adsorbed gas forms a solidlike structure. With the increase in pressure, the diffusion coefficient first declines rapidly and then exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior due to the layering transitions of the adsorbed gas molecules as seen in the equilibrium density profiles. At a subcritical temperature, the diffusion of methane in a fully loaded SWNT follows a solidlike behavior, and the value of the diffusion coefficient varies drastically with the nanotube diameter. At a supercritical temperature, however, the diffusion coefficient at high pressure reaches a plateau, with the limiting value essentially independent of the nanotube size. For SWNTs with the radius larger than approximately 2 nm, capillary condensation occurs when the temperature is sufficiently low, following the layer-by-layer adsorption of gas molecules on the nanotube surface. For SWNTs with a diameter less than about 2 nm, no condensation is observed because the system becomes essentially one-dimensional.  相似文献

The nonbonded and bonded force field parameters for carbon atoms in single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) are fitted by means of quantum chemistry calculations with considering the periodic boundary conditions. The nonbonded parameters between carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms are fitted as well. All the fitted parameters are verified by comparing to quantum chemistry results and by calculating Young's modulus. Adsorption of Hydrogen molecules are then carried out on a bundle of self-assembled SWNTs. The adsorption isotherms are consistent to the Freundlich equation. Both hydrogen molecules adsorbed outside and inside the SWNTs are counted. According to our result, hydrogen molecules adsorbed inside the SWNTs are more stable at a relatively high temperature and are playing an important part in total amount of the adsorbed molecules. While C(10,10) have the highest adsorption capacities in most of the temperatures, hydrogen molecules inside C(5,5) are the most stable of all the four kinds of SWNTs. Thus, balancing adsorption capacities and strength of interaction can be important in choosing SWNT for gas adsorption. Besides, we deduct an equation that can describe the relation between hydrogen pressure and amount of SWNTs based on our simulation results. The hydrogen pressure may decrease by adding SWNTs in the system. The fitting method in our system is valid to SWNTs and can be tested in further studies of similar systems. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

We have succeeded in dispersing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) into an aqueous solution of poly(ethylene glycol)-terminated malachite green derivative (PEG-MG) through simple sonication. It was found that UV exposure caused reaggregation of these predispersed SWNTs in the same aqueous medium, as adsorbed PEG-MG photochromic chains could be effectively photocleavaged from the nanotube surface. The observed light-controlled dispersion and reaggragation of SWNTs in the aqueous solution should facilitate the development of SWNT dispersions with a controllable dispersity for potential applications.  相似文献
