Let q be a power of a prime and n a positive integer. Let P(q) be a parabolic subgroup of the finite general linear group GL n (q). We show that the number of P(q)-conjugacy classes in GL n (q) is, as a function of q, a polynomial in q with integer coefficients. This answers a question of Alperin in (Commun. Let K/k be a finite extension of fields with an intermediate subfield L, and let H = GLL(K) be the general linear group of all L-linear invertible mappings of the vector space of the field K over L. The author and Nakano recently proved that multiplicities in a Specht filtration of a symmetric group module are well-defined precisely when the characteristic is at least five. This result suggested the possibility of a symmetric group theory analogous to that of good filtrations and tilting modules for GL n (k). This article is an initial attempt at such a theory. We obtain two sufficient conditions that ensure a module has a Specht filtration, and a formula for the filtration multiplicities. We then study the categories of modules that satisfy the conditions, in the process obtaining a new result on Specht module cohomology.

Next we consider symmetric group modules that have both Specht and dual Specht filtrations. Unlike tilting modules for GL n (k), these modules need not be self-dual, and there is no nice tensor product theorem. We prove a correspondence between indecomposable self-dual modules with Specht filtrations and a collection of GL n (k)-modules which behave like tilting modules under the tilting functor. We give some evidence that indecomposable self-dual symmetric group modules with Specht filtrations may be indecomposable self dual trivial source modules.  相似文献

Let K be a (algebraically closed ) field. A morphism Ag −1 Ag, where AM(n) and gGL(n), defines an action of a general linear group GL(n) on an n × n-matrix space M(n), referred to as an adjoint action. In correspondence with the adjoint action is the coaction α: K[M(n)] → K[M(n)] ⊗ K[GL(n)] of a Hopf algebra K[GL(n)] on a coordinate algebra K[M(n)] of an n × n-matrix space, dual to the conjugation morphism. Such is called an adjoint coaction. We give coinvariants of an adjoint coaction for the case where K is a field of arbitrary characteristic and one of the following conditions is satisfied: (1) q is not a root of unity; (2) char K = 0 and q = ±1; (3) q is a primitive root of unity of odd degree. Also it is shown that under the conditions specified, the category of rational GL q × GL q -modules is a highest weight category.  相似文献

Let GLn(q) be the general linear group and let Hn ; Vn(q) · GLn(q) denote the affine group of Vn(q). In [1] and [4], we determined Fischer matrices for the conjugacy classes of GLn(q) where n = 2, 3, 4 and we obtained the number of conjugacy classes and irreducible characters of H2, H3, and H4. In this article, we introduce the idea of Lie regular elements and study 2 × 2 Lie regular matrices. It is shown that the linear groups GL(2, ?2 n ), GL(2, ? p n ), and GL(2, ?2p ) (where p is an odd prime) can be genrated by Lie regular matrices. Presentations of linear groups GL(2, ?4), GL(2, ?6), GL(2, ?8), and GL(2, ?10) are also given.  相似文献

Let L be a relatively free nilpotent Lie algebra over ? of rank n and class c, with n ≥ 2; freely generated by a set 𝒵. Give L the structure of a group, denoted by R, by means of the Baker–Campbell–Hausdorff formula. Let G be the subgroup of R generated by the set 𝒵 and N Aut(L)(G) the normalizer in Aut(L) of the set G. We prove that the automorphism group of L is generated by GL n (?) and N Aut(L)(G). Let H be a subgroup of finite index in Aut(G) generated by the tame automorphisms and a finite subset X of IA-automorphisms with cardinal s. We construct a set Y consisting of s + 1 IA-automorphisms of L such that Aut(L) is generated by GL n (?) and Y. We apply this particular method to construct generating sets for the automorphism groups of certain relatively free nilpotent Lie algebras.  相似文献

Let π be a cuspidal automorphic representation ofGL 2n . We prove an identity between two spectral distributions onSp 2n andGL 2n respectively. The first is the spherical distribution with respect toSp n×Sp nof the residual Eisenstein series induced from π. The second is the weighted spherical distribution of π with respect toGL n×GL nand a certain degenerate Eisenstein series. A similar identity relates the pair (U 2n ,Sp n) and (GL n/E,GL n/F) whereE/F is the quadratic extension defining the quasi-split unitary groupU 2n . We prove that the germ expansion of a discrete series representation π on GL n (D) where D is a division algebra over k of index m and the germ expansion of the representation π of GL mn (k) associated to π by the Deligne–Kazhdan–Vigneras correspondence are closely related, and therefore certain coefficients in the germ expansion of a discrete series representation of GL mn (k) can be interpreted (and therefore sometimes calculated) in terms of the dimension of a certain space of (degenerate) Whittaker models on GL n (D). Let 𝒪 be a discrete valuation ring whose residue field 𝒪/𝔭 is finite and has odd characteristic. Let l be a positive integer. Set R = 𝒪/𝔭 l and let R = R[θ] be the ring obtained by adjoining to R a square root of a non-square unit. Consider the involution σ of R that fixes R elementwise and sends θ to ? θ. Let V be a free R-module of rank n > 0 endowed with a non-degenerate hermitian form ( , ) relative to σ. Let U n (R) be the subgroup of GL(V) that preserves ( , ). Let SU n (R) be the subgroup of all g ∈ U n (R) whose determinant is equal to one. Let Ψ be the Weil character of U n (R).

All irreducible constituents of Ψ are determined. An explicit character formula is given for each of them. In particular, all character degrees are computed. For n > 2 the corresponding results are also obtained for the restriction of Ψ to SU n (R).  相似文献

Let D be an infinite division ring. A famous result due to Herstein says that every non-central element of D has infinitely many conjugates and so, if D * is an FC-group, then D is a field. Let M be a maximal subgroup of GL n (D), where n ≥ 1. In this paper, we prove that if M is an FC-group, then it is the multiplicative group of some maximal subfield of M n (D). Moreover, if M is algebraic over Z(D), then [D : Z(D)] < ∞.  相似文献

Given a knot complement X and its p-fold cyclic cover X p X, we identify twisted polynomials associated to GL1(F[t±1]){GL_1\left({\bf F}[t^{\pm 1}]\right)} representations of π 1(X p ) with twisted polynomials associated to related GLp(F[t±1]){GL_p\left({\bf F}[t^{\pm 1}]\right)} representations of π 1(X) which factor through metabelian representations. This provides a simpler and faster algorithm to compute these polynomials, allowing us to prove that 16 (of 18 previously unknown) algebraically slice knots of 12 or fewer crossings are not slice. We also use this improved algorithm to prove that the 24 mutants of the pretzel knot P(3, 7, 9, 11, 15), corresponding to permutations of (7, 9, 11, 15), represent distinct concordance classes.  相似文献
