The potential for using a small, sealed tube, DT neutron generator for neutron activation analysis has been well documented but not well demonstrated, except for 14 MeV activation analysis. This paper describes the design, construction and characterization of a neutron irradiation facility incorporating a small sealed tube DT neutron generator producing 14 MeV neutrons with fluence rates of 2·108 s−1 in 4π (steady state) and 1011 s−1 in 4π (pulsed). Monte Carlo modeling using MCNP4c and McBend9 has been used to optimize the design of this facility, including the location of a thermal irradiation facility for conventional neutron activation analysis. A significant factor in designing the facility has been the requirement to conform with Ionising Radiation Regulations and the design has been optimized to keep potential radiation doses to less that 1 μSv/h at the external walls of the facility. Activation of gold foils has been used for flux characterization and the experimental results agree well with the modeling.  相似文献

Material analysis with prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) requires a proper geometrical arrangement for equipments in laboratory. Application of PGNAA in analysis of biological samples, due to small size of sample, needs attention to the dimension of neutron beam. In our work, neutron source has been made of 241Am–Be type. Activity of 241Am was 20 Ci which lead to neutron source strength of 4.4 × 107 neutrons per second. Water has been considered as the basic shielding material for the neutron source. The effect of various concentration of boric acid in the reduction of intensity of fast and thermal components of the neutron beam and gamma ray has been investigated. Gamma ray is produced by (α, n) reaction in Am–Be source (4.483 MeV), neutron capture by hydrogen (2.224 MeV), and neutron capture by boron (0.483 MeV). Various types of neutron and gamma ray dosimeters have been employed including BF3 and NE-213 detectors to detect fast and thermal neutrons. BGO scintillation detector has been used for gamma ray spectroscopy. It is shown that the gamma and neutron radiation dose due to direct beam is of the same magnitude as the dose due to radiation scattered in the laboratory ambient. It is concluded that 14 kg boric acid dissolved in 1,000 kg water is the optimum solution to surround the neutron source. The experimental results have been compared with Monte Carlo simulation.  相似文献

The use of 2.8 MeV neutrons produced by the D(d, n)3He reaction should be taken into consideration in some applications of radioactivation analysis. The low number of elements activable by these neutrons makes possible to minimize the matrix interference and the background below the characteristic photopeaks. The very low dead-time of the spectrometric measurements permits the use of the maximum neutron flux available now and in the future. The purpose of this paper is to define experimentally the sensitivity of determination for the 16 main elements activable with a 400 keV Van de Graaff accelerator at a 2.8 MeV neutron flux of 2·106 n·cm−2·sec−1 on the sample.  相似文献

A procedure involving the irradiation of coal samples with 14 MeV neutrons and subsequent gamma-ray spectrometry of the irradiated sample for the estimation of solfur in coal, has been outlined. The samples were irradiated with 14MeV neutrons from a Cockroft-Walton type generator for one minute and then subjected to gamma-ray spectrometry for another minute using an automated transfer cyclic system. Ten such cycles were repeated for accumulating events under the 2130 keV gamma ray photopeak belonging to34P (T=12.4 s) produced by the34S(n, p)34P reaction for assessing the lower level of detection, LLD, of Sulfur. Interferences due to the presence of other elements in coal were also determined. Sulfur can be determined at LLD of 0.25% in coal provided a 5 g sample of the coal is irradiated with a neutron flux of 5·109 n·cm−2·sec−1 assayed with a gamma ray spectrometer having a large hollow core Ge(Li) detector and an anti-Compton shield.  相似文献

China Advance Research Reactor (CARR) at China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE), with a non-perturbed maximum thermal neutron flux of 1 × 1015 cm−2 s−1 at the center of active area, is one of the most powerful research reactors in the world. Three neutron channels have been allocated for conventional neutron activation analysis (NAA), thermal neutron prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) and cold neutron PGAA, respectively. Two irradiation tube systems are installed in the conventional NAA channel. One of them is for short irradiation with the rabbit size of diameter (Φ)19 × 40 mm, the other one is for long irradiation with the rabbit size of Φ39 × 70 mm. The medium temperature is about 45 °C and the thermal neutron flux is about 3 × 1014 cm−2 s−1 at sample positions. The flux gradient is expected to be very small according to the designed neutron flux distribution. Pneumatic systems are used for samples transfer. The speed of rabbits is designed to be about 20 m/s, and it takes 3 s to travel from irradiation position to detector. Three sets of gamma counting systems and one delayed neutron counting system are being equipped for routine analysis. They are designed for running continuously and automatically. And all the functions can be operated at laboratory or office through remote controlled computer. Software has been made domestically for spectrum peak search, concentration calculation with relative method and k0 method with interference corrections and some other functions for the convenience of users.  相似文献

Stray neutron distribution in a medical cyclotron vault room was evaluated by neutron activation analysis (NAA). Neutrons were generated in the production of radioactive nuclides, such as 18F, 11C, 13N and 15O, for diagnostic usage. Indium foil was adopted to evaluate the stray fast and thermal neutron intensity based on 115In(nf, n′)115mIn and 115In(nth, γ)116m1In reactions, respectively. The indium foils were weighed, sealed and placed at 62 points around the 6.7×8.2 m2 cyclotron room. Additionally, each indium foil was exposed for over 80 minutes during cyclotron operation and γ-peaks were analyzed using an HPGe detector to evaluate the number of stray fast (Φ f) or thermal (Φ th) neutrons. The minimum to maximum numbers of fast and thermal neutrons were (3.47±0.11)×103 to (1.06±0.21)×104 n·cm−2·s−1 and 9 to 965 n·cm−2·s−1, respectively. The minimum detectable limit for stray neutrons was included herein to demonstrate the reliability. Accordingly, 60 and two points, respectively, the confidence level associated with the reported intensities of fast and thermal neutrons reached 95%. The low qualified ratio in the evaluation of stray thermal neutrons might have been caused by either the high Compton scattering plateau or the low intensity of the gamma-ray peak in the relevant spectrum.  相似文献

The possible application of cyclotron-produced fast neutrons to activation analysis for oxygen based on the16O(n, p)16N reaction has been investigated. Neutrons were produced by bombarding a thick beryllium target with 22 to 45 MeV deuterons. It was found that the sensitivity increases rapidly with the energy of the deuterons. Using 45 MeV deuterons and a 10 μA beam current a sensitivity of about 20 counts per 1 μg oxigen could be achieved, enabling the determination of less than 1 μg oxigen. In a direct comparison it was experimentally established that the sensitivity for cyclotron-produced neutrons assuming a deuteron beam of about 10 μA, is up to two orders of magnitude higher than that achievable for 14 MeV neutrons with a flux of about 1010 n/s. The interference of fluorine is at about the same level for both the cyclotron-produced and 14 MeV neutrons. Using cyclotron-produced fast neutrons in the investigated energy range, sodium and magnesium can also interfere, but only to a very much lower extent.  相似文献

A facility for thermalization of fast neutrons (14.2 MeV) emitted by compact deuterium–tritium (D–T) neutron generators (NGs) for thermal neutron activation analysis is proposed. Its final design is based on Monte Carlo calculations (MCNP5). To maximize the ratio between the thermal neutron flux and the total neutron flux and simultaneously to ensure the highest possible value of the thermal neutron flux at the output surface, the facility should consist of a two-layer reflector [tungsten (W)—the inner part, molybdenum—the outer part], a two-layer multiplier (W followed by lead), a moderator (polyethylene followed by magnesium fluoride) and a collimator (molybdenum and nickel near the output surface). For the D–T NG producing the maximum available neutron yield 1015 n s?1, the facility provides the thermal neutron flux 2.0 × 1011 n cm?2 s ?1 and a slightly higher fast neutron flux 2.3 × 1011 n cm?2 s?1. To improve the ratio of the thermal neutron flux to the fast neutron flux (above 2.7) an addition of a silicon layer to the moderator and especially a proper adjustment and a threefold increase of the multiplier thickness is necessary.  相似文献

The macroscopic cross-section Σ and average neutron fluence in matter Φ are usable factors to comment neutron shielding property of samples. In this paper, we have used MgB2, NaBH4 and KBH4 samples including different percentages of boron. Neutron macroscopic cross-section measurements of them have been done by using a source of mono-energetic neutrons (E eff = 4.5 MeV 241Am–Be). Average neutron fluence values and double differential fast neutron flux distributions of each samples calculated by using FLUKA Monte Carlo code. Also half value layers (HVLs) of samples are compared to paraffin which is one of the most neutron moderators. As a result, growing boron concentration can raise neutron shielding property of materials.  相似文献

At the GKSS Research Center Geesthacht, a new 14 MeV activation facility—a 5·1012 n/s neutron generator combined with a fast rabbit system (KORONA)—is being installed. Homogeneous neutron flux at a level of 5·1010 n·cm−2·s−1 and sample transfer times of 140 ms to a 16m distant detector station are characteristic features of the facility described in the paper. With special consideration of short-lived nuclides and including cyclic activation, the analytical prospects with the intense neutron source are discussed, and sensitivities for 78 elements are presented.  相似文献

A rapid, nondestructive method has been developed for determination of fluorine by activation with fast neutrons from a241Am-242Cm-Be source and counting the 6–7 MeV γ rays of the product nitrogen-16. The total neutron output of the source is 4.8·109 unmoderated neutrons per second and the flux is 1.4·108 fast n·cm−2· sec−1. The γ-ray detectors consist of two opposing, matched cylindrical NaI(Tl) crystals 10 cm long and 10 cm in diameter. The sample is irradiated for 30 seconds, cooled for 4 seconds, and then counted for 30 seconds. The sensitivity is 4.8·104 counts nitrogen-16 per gram fluorine, and the limit of detection is 0.4 mg fluorine in a 10-gram sample. A reproducibility of 0.24% is achieved. The relative standard deviation of the specific count rate of nitrogen-16 for 11 fluorine compounds is 1.31%.  相似文献

A procedure for the determination of chromium in blood has been developed with a sensitivity of 5×10−3 μg Cr. Dried blood was irradiated with a neutron flux of 1012 n·cm−2·sec−1 in the VVRS reactor for 4 weeks, then the sample was mineralized and the chromium isolated by extraction as perchromic acid. The determination of the chromium content was accomplished by measuring the 0.32 MeV gamma energy of51Cr. In order to make correction for the interfering reaction54Fe(n,α)51Cr, the formation of chromium from high-purity iron was investigated. The chromium content of the blood samples was between 1.03×10−2 and 5.2×10−2 ppm Cr.  相似文献

Performance of a 241Am-Be neutron source-based and 2.8 MeV neutrons-based moisture measurement setups have been compared using Monte Carlo simulation. In the setup fast neutrons transmitted through the sample were detected by a fast neutron detector, which was placed behind a massive long double truncated collimator. The setup geometry was optimized to detect maximum effect of 1–7 wt.% moisture on the neutron intensity transmitted through the sample. The yield of neutrons transmitted through concrete, coal, wood and soil samples containing 1–7 wt.% moisture was calculated for 2.8 MeV neutrons and neutrons from an 241Am-Be source. The slopes of the fast neutron intensities transmitted through the samples vs. their moisture contents are very sensitive to the neutron energy and the sample composition. Higher slopes have been observed for the samples with larger bulk density. The slopes of fast neutron yield show dependence on the incident neutron energy. Larger slopes have been observed for neutrons with samller energy. Due to the overall large slopes of the transmitted intensity data of the samples for 2.8 MeV neutrons, it is expected to achieve better sensitivity in moisture measurements for a 2.8 MeV neutrons based moisture setup.  相似文献

We have measured the cross sections of the 16O(n,t) reactions above 18.1 up to 33.1 MeV in an neutron activation method. H2O (water) as an 16O target was irradiated with semi-monoenergetic neutrons generated from the 9Be(p,n)9B reaction with 25–35 MeV protons. The neutron flux was obtained with the aid of previous study by Uwamino et al. (Nucl Instr Methods A 271:546, 1988). The tritium activities were measured by using the liquid scintillation counting (LSC) method. The present value for the cross section of 16O(n,t) reaction agrees with previous values measured by using the same LSC method at similar neutron energy ranging from 18.1 up to 33.1 MeV.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to define experimentally the sensitivity of determination for 63 different elements by 14 MeV neutron activation, with a 150 kV Cockroft-Walton accelerator at a neutron flux of 2·108 n·cm−2·sec−1 on the sample. The obtained gamma ray spectra are given, and the origin of the photopeaks observed are explained. A maximum irradiation time of five minutes was used as a convenient experimental limit to obtain the maximum sensitivity, considering, however, that the tritium target life is limited, and that the time to perform an analysis has to be reasonable. The practical use of 14 MeV neutron activation analysis is demonstrated by the detection limits obtained.  相似文献

The experimental sensitivity for 72 different elements using 3 MeV neutron activation has been investigated. Using a 200 kV Cockcroft-Walton neutron generator with a 3 MeV neutron flux of about 1.5·106n·cm−2·sec−1, γ-ray spectra of 51 elements were obtained with a sufficient number of photopeak counts for sensitivity calculations using a photopeak integration method. A useful table summarizing the sensitivity results is given. That 3 MeV neutron activation analysis is practical, is demonstrated by the experimental sensitivities obtained. SnO2 thin films synthesized by sol-gel are irradiated with reactor neutrons up to fast neutron fluence of 9.6 × 1017 neutrons cm–2 at 40°C. The influence of defects generated by neutrons irradiation, through the properties modification, on the photo-catalytic activity of SnO2 films is investigated. It is found that the photoactivity of the irradiated films is enhanced after reactor neutrons irradiation. An improvement of 41% is observed for the sample irradiated at a neutron fluence of 9.6 × 1017 neutrons cm–2. This is attributed to several parameters modified by the reactor neutron irradiation principally the crystallite size and space charge region which are closely related to the photocatalytic performance.  相似文献

Densities of solutions of tetramethyl-bis-urea (TMbU) or “Mebicarum” in H2O and D2O, with solute mole fraction concentrations (x 2) ranging up to 3.2 × 10−3, have been measured at 288.15, 298.15, 308.15 and 318.15 K using a precision vibrating-tube densimeter. The limiting apparent molar volumes, V φ,2 , and expansibilities, E p, φ, 2 , of the solute have been calculated. The isotope effect δ V φ,2 (H2O → D2O;T) is negative, monotonously decreases in magnitude with temperature and reverses sign at T ≈ 318 K. Water (H2O, D2O) and TMbU molecules in infinitely- and highly-dilute aqueous solutions form H(D)-bonded hydration complexes with a high packing density. The hydration of TMbU should be treated as a superposition of two mechanisms, hydrophobic and hydrophilic, with the latter one predominating.  相似文献

Monochromatic MeV-energy neutron source for secondary reaction was developed utilizing tritium embedded titanium (Ti-3H) thin film via 3H(p,n)3He reaction. We have measured the neutron energies and the energy spread by resonance reactions of 12C(n,tot) and 28Si(n,tot). The available energy was within the range from 0.6 to 2.6 MeV. Energy spread was 1.6% at energy of 2.077 MeV. The flux in the beam direction was determined to be 3.76·107 n/s/sr by irradiating 197Au by about 2 MeV neutrons. This source was shown to be useful for measurements of nuclear data by measuring the total cross sections of neutrons on Fe and comparing these data to the data of ENDF-6.  相似文献
