Water-in-oil, high internal phase emulsion made of super-cooled aqueous solution containing a mixture of inorganic salts and stabilized with non-ionic surfactant (sorbitan monooleate) alone was investigated. It was not possible to produce a highly concentrated emulsion (with aqueous phase fraction = 94 wt %), stabilized with surface-treated silica, solely: we were able to form an emulsion with a maximal aqueous phase mass fraction of 85 wt % (emulsion inverts/breaks above this concentration). The inversion point is dependent on the silica particle concentration, presence of salt in the aqueous phase, and does not depend on the pH of the dispersed phase. All emulsions stabilized by the nanoparticles solely were unstable to shear. So, the rheological properties and stability of the emulsions containing super-cooled dispersed phase, with regards to crystallization, were determined for an emulsion stabilized by non-ionic surfactant only. The results were compared to the properties obtained for emulsions stabilized by surface treated (relatively hydrophobic) silica nanoparticles as a co-surfactant to sorbitan monooleate. The influence of the particle concentration, type of silica surface treatment, particle/surfactant ratio on emulsification and emulsion rheological properties was studied. The presence of the particles as a co-stabilizer increases the stability of all emulsions. Also, it was found that the particle/surfactant ratio is important since the most stable emulsions are those where particles dominate over the surfactant, when the surfactant’s role is to create bridging flocculation of the particles. The combination of the two types of hydrophobic silica particles as co-surfactants is: one that resides at the water/oil interface and provides a steric boundary and another that remains in the oil phase creating a 3D-network throughout the oil phase, which is even more beneficiary in terms of the emulsion stability.  相似文献

Nanoparticle surfactants (NPSs), formed by using dynamic interactions between nanoparticles and complementary ligands at the liquid-liquid interface, have emerged as “smart emulsifiers” with attributes of high emulsification efficiency, long-term stability, and on-demand emulsification/demulsification capabilities. However, only pH-responsiveness can be adopted for the assembly of reported NPSs formed by electrostatic interactions. Here, we propose an alternative design strategy, by taking advantage of the ferrocenium (Fc+) sulfate ion pair, to develop a new type of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) surfactant. The Fc+ groups are sensitive to pH, redox reagents and voltage, imparting the CNC surfactants and derived Pickering emulsions with multi-stimuli-responsiveness, and showing promising applications in controllable delivery, release, and biphasic biocatalysis.  相似文献

The formation and stability of drops in the presence of nanoparticles was studied in a microfluidic device to directly observe the early stages of Pickering emulsification (low interfacial coverage). We observed several key differences between oil droplet necking and rupture in aqueous phases of nanoparticles (methylated silica) and well-characterised surfactant systems. The presence of particles did not influence drop formation dynamics and thus the size of the drops generated. In addition, observations of in-channel drop stability shortly after formation (several milliseconds) indicated that particles in the aqueous phase slow film thinning processes, but do not prevent coalescence. In contrast, downstream collection and densification (at the microchannel outlet), showed that particle-stabilised drops do not coalesce for several weeks, above a critical particle concentration. The implications of our results for droplet microfluidics and our understanding of conventional emulsification systems are discussed.  相似文献

Emulsions of equal volumes of a cyclic silicone oil and water stabilized by fumed silica nanoparticles alone can be inverted from oil-in-water (o/w) to water-in-oil (w/o) by simply increasing the concentration of particles. The phenomenon is found to be crucially dependent both on the inherent hydrophobicity of the particles and on their initial location. Inversion only occurs in systems with particles of intermediate hydrophobicity when dispersed in oil; emulsions prepared from the same particles but initially dispersed in water remain o/w at all particle concentrations. The stability and drop size distributions in the different emulsions are compared. Various hypotheses are put forward and argued to explain this novel inversion route including adsorption of oil onto particle surfaces, hysteresis of contact angle affecting particle wettability in situ, and the structure of particle dispersions in oil or water prior to emulsification inferred from rheology and light scattering measurements. We propose that the tendency for particles to behave more hydrophobically at higher concentrations in oil is due to the reduction in the effective silanol content at their surfaces as a result of gel formation via silanol-silanol hydrogen bonds. In water, solvation of particle surfaces prevents this from occurring and particles behave as hydrophilic ones at all concentrations. A concentration-induced change in particle wettability is thus advanced.  相似文献

Emulsification processes are usually characterized by the way they allow the surfactants, as well as the dispersed phase, to be incorporated into emulsions. A model cyclohexane-in-water emulsion using a pair of polyoxyethylene nonylphenyl ether surfactants, one oil-soluble and one water-soluble, was considered. Two surfactant mixing approaches consisting of mixed surfactants (agent-in-oil and agent-in-water) and segregated surfactants (agent in corresponding oil and water phases) were used to produce the model emulsion. Formation of oil-in-water nanodroplets could be only achieved if emulsification was associated with the formation of a three-phase microemulsion structure (transitional phase inversion) across the path. This occurred only if segregated surfactants were used in a process in which water was added to oil. With decreasing surfactant concentration, a point was reached below which the inversion mechanism transformed from transitional to catastrophic, leading to the formation of large droplets. The transformation was also accompanied by a shift in the evolution of the drop size. Drop size variations showed a minimum at the inversion point for the transitional phase inversion, whereas they showed a maximum for the catastrophic phase inversion. The agent-in-oil technique followed a catastrophic phase inversion mechanism and ranked second in terms of drop size.  相似文献

The low-energy emulsification method phase inversion composition (PIC) was used to prepare O/W nanoemulsions in the W/oleylammonium chloride-oleylamine-C12E10/hexadecane ionic system, where the oleylammonium acted as a cationic surfactant. The results obtained, in terms of phase diagrams and emulsion characteristics, were compared with those obtained in the system W/potassium oleate-oleic acid-C12E10/hexadecane [I. Solè, A. Maestro, C. González, C. Solans, J.M. Gutiérrez, Langmuir 22 (2006) 8326], in which the oleate acted as an anionic surfactant. This study was done in order to extend the application range of the ionic nanoemulsions, not only in anionic systems but also in cationic ones, and in order to deep further into the nanoemulsion formation mechanism. The results show again that to obtain small droplet-sized nanoemulsions it is necessary to cross a direct cubic liquid crystal phase along the emulsification path, and it is also crucial to remain in this phase enough time and to use a proper mixing rate to incorporate all the oil into the liquid crystal. Then, when nanoemulsion forms, the oil is already intimately mixed with all the components, and the nanoemulsification is easier. Structural studies made with both cationic and anionic systems confirmed that the size of the "micelles" that form the cubic phase is the same or slightly smaller than the size of the nanoemulsion droplets obtained, depending on the emulsification path, which seems to point out that the nanoemulsions are formed in both cases by a dilution process of this cubic phase. When further watery solution is added to the cubic liquid crystal, these micelles separate, disrupting the cubic structure, and a small fraction of the surfactant migrates to the water. Moreover, due to the change in pH, the spontaneous curvature increases. Then, the phases in equilibrium are an oil-in-water microemulsion (W(m)) and the oil in excess. However, through this emulsification method, the surfactants can be "trapped" in a lower curvature than the spontaneous one, retaining all the oil nanoemulsified.  相似文献

The interfacial and bulk properties of submicron oil-in-water emulsions simultaneously stabilised with a conventional surfactant (either lecithin or oleylamine) and hydrophilic silica nanoparticles (Aerosil?380) were investigated and compared with emulsions stabilised by either stabiliser. Emulsions solely stabilised with lecithin or oleylamine showed poor physical stability, i.e., sedimentation and the release of pure oil was observed within 3 months storage. The formation and long-term stability of silica nanoparticle-coated emulsions was investigated as a function of the surfactant type, charge, and concentration; the oil phase polarity (Miglyol?812 versus liquid paraffin); and loading phase of nanoparticles, either oil or water. Highly stable emulsions with long-term resistance to coalescence and creaming were formulated even at low lecithin concentrations in the presence of optimum levels of silica nanoparticles. The attachment energy of silica nanoparticles at the non-polar oil-water interface in the presence of lecithin was significantly higher compared to oleylamine in line with good long-term stability of the former compared to the sedimentation and release of oil in the latter. The attachment energy of silica nanoparticles at the polar oil-water interface especially in the presence of oleylamine was up to five-times higher compared to the non-polar liquid paraffin. The interfacial layer structure of nanoparticles (close-packed layer of particle aggregates or scattered particle flocs) directly related to the free energy of nanoparticle adsorption at both MCT oil and liquid paraffin-water interfaces.  相似文献

A study of the emulsification of silicone oil and water in the presence of partially hydrophobic, monodisperse silica nanoparticles is described. Emulsification involves the fragmentation of bulk liquids and the resulting large drops and the coalescence of some of those drops. The influence of particle concentration, oil/water ratio, and emulsification time on the relative extents of fragmentation and coalescence during the formation of emulsions, prepared using either batch or continuous methods, has been investigated. For batch emulsions, the average drop diameter decreases with increasing particle concentration as the extent of limited coalescence is reduced. Increasing the oil volume fraction in the emulsion at fixed aqueous particle concentration results in an increase in the average drop diameter together with a dramatic lowering of the uniformity of the drop size distribution as coalescence becomes increasingly significant until catastrophic phase inversion occurs. For low oil volume fractions (phi(o)), fragmentation dominates during emulsification since the mean drop size decreases with emulsification time. For higher phi(o) close to conditions of phase inversion, coalescence becomes more prevalent and the drop size increases with time with stable multiple emulsions forming as a result.

Charge-stabilized dispersions of inorganic colloids are shown to induce spontaneous emulsification of hydrophobic (TPM) molecules to stable oil-in-water emulsions, with monodisperse, mesoscopic oil droplet diameters in the range of 30-150 nm, irrespective of the polydispersity of the starting dispersions. The results for cobalt ferrite particles and commercial silica sols extend our first study (Sacanna, S.; Kegel, W. K.; Philipse, A. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2007, 98, 158301) on spontaneous emulsification induced by charged magnetite colloids and show that this type of self-assembly is quite generic with respect to the composition of the nanoparticles adsorbing at the oil-water interface. Moreover, we provide additional experimental evidence for the thermodynamic stability of these mesoemulsions, including spontaneous oil dispersal imaged by confocal microscopy and monitored in situ by time-resolved dynamic light scattering. We discuss the possibility that thermodynamic stability of the emulsions is provided by the negative tension of the three-phase line between oil, water, and adsorbed colloids.  相似文献

Oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions of styrene, as monomer oil in water, were achieved successfully via Pickering emulsification with laponite nanoparticles as the sole inorganic stabilizers. The formed emulsions showed excellent stability not only against droplets coalescence (before polymerization) but also against microparticles coagulation (after polymerization). Generally, the number of composite polystyrene microparticles (PS) increased and their sizes decreased with the content of solid nanoparticles used in stabilizing the precursor o/w emulsions. This is consistent with the formation of rigid layer(s) of the inorganic nanoparticles around the PS microparticles thus a better stability was achieved. The composite microparticles were characterized using various techniques such as surface charge, stability, transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR). Coating films of the prepared latexes were applied to flat glass surfaces and showed reasonable adhesion compared to PS latex particles prepared with conventional surfactants. The effect of employed conditions on the features of the resulting emulsions in terms of stability and particle size has been discussed.  相似文献

The colloidal stability, phase behavior, and solubility of silica nanoparticles (3-10 nm) that are formed in basic solutions of monovalent cations (primarily tetrapropylammonium) are investigated using a combination of chemical equilibria and electrostatic models. The free-energy gain associated with the formation of an electric double layer surrounding the nanoparticle was obtained by solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. This free energy is an important contribution to the total free energy of the particle and is second only to the formation of Si-O-Si bonds. The free energy of formation of the nanoparticles becomes increasingly negative with an increase in particle size and density, which explains the lower solubility of nanoparticles compared to that of amorphous silica. There is a minimum in the free energy of condensation as a function of size that qualitatively explains why the formation of small particles with a uniform size (<5 nm) is energetically favorable. The electrostatic models provide an estimate for the nanoparticle surface potential, which is significantly higher (-120 to -170 mV) than that of zeolite silicalite-1 (-60 to -80 mV) prepared in similar solutions. This result explains the stability of such small particles in solution. It is also shown that a condensation model that is based on silica solubility can describe the phase diagram for nanoparticle formation reported by Fedeyko et al. (J. Phys. Chem. B 2004, 108, 12271) over a wide range of pH and, in conjunction with a complexation model, provides an approximate equilibrium constant (pKa = 8.4) for the dissociation of nanoparticle silanol groups.  相似文献

Oregano oil (OrO) possesses well-pronounced antimicrobial properties but its application is limited due to low water solubility and possible instability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility to incorporate OrO in an aqueous dispersion of chitosan—alginate nanoparticles and how this will affect its antimicrobial activity. The encapsulation of OrO was performed by emulsification and consequent electrostatic gelation of both polysaccharides. OrO-loaded nanoparticles (OrO-NP) have small size (320 nm) and negative charge (−25 mV). The data from FTIR spectroscopy and XRD analyses reveal successful encapsulation of the oil into the nanoparticles. The results of thermogravimetry suggest improved thermal stability of the encapsulated oil. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of OrO-NP determined on a panel of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens (ISO 20776-1:2006) are 4–32-fold lower than those of OrO. OrO-NP inhibit the respiratory activity of the bacteria (MTT assay) to a lower extent than OrO; however, the minimal bactericidal concentrations still remain significantly lower. OrO-NP exhibit significantly lower in vitro cytotoxicity than pure OrO on the HaCaT cell line as determined by ISO 10993-5:2009. The irritation test (ISO 10993-10) shows no signs of irritation or edema on the application site. In conclusion, the nanodelivery system of oregano oil possesses strong antimicrobial activity and is promising for development of food additives.

We explore the generality of nanoparticle haloing as a novel colloidal stabilization mechanism in binary mixtures of silica microspheres and polystyrene nanoparticles. By selectively tuning their electrostatic interactions, both the initial microsphere stability and the role of nanoparticle additions are varied. Adsorption isotherm and zeta potential measurements indicate that highly charged nanoparticles exhibit a weak (haloing) association with negligibly charged microspheres, whereas they either strongly adsorb onto oppositely charged or are repelled by like-charged microsphere surfaces, respectively. Bulk sedimentation and confocal scanning fluorescence microscopy reveal that important differences in system stability emerge depending on whether the added nanoparticles serve as haloing, bridging, or depletant species.  相似文献

The stabilization of emulsions by a mixture of oppositely charged nanoparticles is investigated in relation to their behavior in water before emulsification. No emulsion can be prepared using either negatively or positively charged silica particles alone because the particles are too hydrophilic. Certain mixtures of the two particle types lead to heteroaggregation and a lowering of the net charge. Such mixtures, of increased hydrophobicity as verified by contact angle measurements, are capable of forming stable oil-in-water emulsions of excellent coalescence stability. The increased viscosity of the continuous phase also contributes to such stability.  相似文献

We have studied assembly at air-water and liquid-liquid interfaces with an emphasis on systems containing both surfactants and nanoparticles. Anionic surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and non-ionic surfactants, Triton X-100 and tetraethylene glycol alkyl ethers (C(8)E(4), C(12)E(4) and C(14)E(4)), effectively decrease the surface tension of air-water interfaces. The inclusion of negatively charged hydrophilic silica nanoparticles (diameters of approximately 13 nm) increases the efficiency of the SDS molecules but does not alter the performance of the non-ionic surfactants. The former is likely due to the repulsive Coulomb interactions between the SDS molecules and nanoparticles which promote the surfactant adsorption at air-water interfaces. For systems involving trichloroethylene (TCE)-water interfaces, the SDS and Triton X-100 surfactants effectively decrease the interfacial tensions and the nanoparticle effects are similar compared to those involving air-water interfaces. Interestingly, the C(12)E(4) and C(14)E(4) molecules, with or without the presence of nanoparticles, fail to decrease the TCE-water interfacial tensions. Our molecular dynamics simulations have suggested that the tetraethylene glycol alkyl ether molecules tend to disperse in the TCE phase rather than adsorb at the TCE-water interfaces.  相似文献

A one-step double emulsification protocol using one surfactant was developed for oil-in-water-in-oil (O(1)/W/O(2)) double emulsions. Two n-alkane oils and three different surfactants were studied, with focus placed on a formulation containing mineral oil, glycerol monoleate (GMO) and deionized water. Phenomenologically, double emulsion formation and stability originate from the combined actions of phase inversion and interfacial charging of the oil/water interface during high shear homogenization. Based on the extent of double emulsion formation and stability, a critical emulsification zone dependent on the weight ratios of GMO to water was identified. Within this critical zone, enhanced O(1)/W/O(2) emulsion formation occurred at higher pH and lower salt concentrations, demonstrating the key role of interfacial charging on double emulsification. Overall, this novel approach provides a novel platform for the development of double emulsions with simple compositions and processing requirements.  相似文献

The microscopic thin wetting film method was used to study the stability of wetting films from aqueous solution of surfactants and phospholipid dispersions on a solid surface. In the case of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C(14)TAB) films the experimental data for the receding contact angle, film lifetime, surface potential at the vapor/solution and solution/silica interface were used to analyze the stability of the studied films. It is shown that with increasing C(14)TAB concentration charge reversal occurs at both (vapor/solution and solution/silica) interfaces, which affects the thin-film stability. The spontaneous rupture of the thin aqueous film was interpreted in terms of the earlier proposed heterocoagulation mechanism. The presence of the mixed cationic/anionic surfactants was found to lower contact angles and suppresses the thin aqueous film rupture, thus inducing longer film lifetime, as compared to the pure amine system. In the case of mixed surfactants hetero-coagulation could arise through the formation of ionic surfactant complexes. The influence of the melting phase-transition temperature T(c) of the dimyristoylphosphatiddylcholine (DMPC) on the stability of thin films from dispersions of DMPC small unilamellar vesicles on a silica surface was studied by measuring the film lifetime and the TPC expansion rate. The stability of thin wetting films formed from dispersions of DMPC small unilamellar vesicles was investigated by the microinterferometric method. The formation of wetting films from diluted dispersions of DMPC multilamellar vesicles was studied in the temperature range 25-32 degrees C. The stability of thin film of lipid vesicles was explained on the basis of hydrophobic interactions. The results obtained show that the stability of wetting films from aqueous solutions of single cationic and mixed cationic-anionic surfactants has electrostatic origin, whereas the stability of the phospholipid film is due to hydrophobic interaction.  相似文献
