An extractive spectrophotometric procedure has been developed for the determination of palladium (II) at microgram levels. The palladium(II) chelate of 7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid is extracted into n-butanol. Extraction is maximal (95%) from 0.2M perchloric acid. Beer's law is valid at 430 nm over a wide range of palladium concentration from 2.5 ppm. The molar absorptivity is 958 1.mole(-1).mm(-1). The system can tolerate a large excess of Co(II), Ni(II), Rh(III), Pt(IV), Cr(III), W(VI), chloride, phosphate, citrate and tartrate. Small quantities of Ru(III), IR(III) and EDTA do not interfere, but serious interference is caused by Fe(III), V(V), Mo(VI) and Os(VIII).

Summary A rapid and accurate method is described for the potentiometric determination of uranium(IV) with permanganate at room temperature using trace amounts of ortho-phosphoric acid as a catalyst. The procedure has been extended for the differential potentiometric determination of mixtures with vanadium, manganese or cerium. The methods are easy, non-time consuming and free from interference by a large number of foreign ions. Conditions are also developed for the differential photometric determination of uranium and iron in mixtures.Based on these procedures, a differential titrimetric procedure has been developed for determination of iron(III), vanadium(V), chromium(VI) and manganese(VII) [or cerium(IV)] in a single solution at room temperature. This procedure has also been tested on Bureau of Standard samples.

Coordinating properties of acetoxybenziporphyrin, (TPBPOAc)H, have been investigated for a number of metal ions. Insertion of Ni, Pd, and Fe results in the cleavage of the acetoxy group leading to complexes (TPBPO)Ni(II), (TPBPO)Pd(II), and (TPBPO)Fe(III)X containing a M-O bond. No cleavage is observed with Zn(II) and Cd(II), which form complexes (TPBPOAc)M(II)Cl, where M = Zn, Cd. (TPBPO)Ni(II) can also be obtained from the dication of hydroxybenziporphyrin, [(TPBPOH)H(3)]Cl(2), which is prepared by acid hydrolysis of the acetoxy compound. The diamagnetic (TPBPO)Ni(II) can be transformed into the paramagnetic (TPBPOAc)Ni(II)Cl in a reaction with acetyl chloride. X-ray structures have been determined for (TPBPO)Pd(II) and (TPBPOAc)Zn(II)Cl. In the palladium species, the phenolate moiety forms a strong bond to the Pd ion and an unusual interaction geometry is observed, enforced by the macrocyclic environment. Association of a TFA molecule to the phenolic oxygen does not cause significant structural changes in the (TPBPO)Pd(II) molecule. In (TPBPOAc)Zn(II)Cl, the metal ion weakly interacts with the phenolic fragment. The paramagnetic Fe(III) complexes, (TPBPO)Fe(III)X, have been investigated with (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The observed spectral patterns are consistent with the presence of a high-spin Fe(III) center and pi delocalization of spin density onto the phenoxide fragment. Each of the compounds (TPBPO)Fe(III)X exists in solution as a mixture of two isomers, which for X = I are shown to remain in a temperature-dependent equilibrium. The observed isomerism results from two nonequivalent orientations of the axial halide with respect to the puckered macrocyclic ring.

This paper reports the separation and determination of Nb(V), V(V), Co(II), Fe(III), Ni(II), Ru(III) and Pd(II) by reversed-phase HPLC using the new reagent, 4-(5-nitro-2-pyridylazo) resorcinol (5-NO2-PAR) as a precolumn derivatization reagent. On a C18 column, the seven metal chelates can be separated quantitatively with methanol/water (5248, v/v) containing 15 mmol/l pH 5.0 acetate buffer and 10 mmol/l tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBA·Br). The detection limits for Nb(V), V(V), Co(II), Fe(III), Ni(II), Ru(III) and Pd(II) are 0.65 ppb, 0.94 ppb, 0.10 ppb, 0.15 ppb, 0.18 ppb, 3.02 ppb and 2.35 ppb, respectively when the ratio of signal to noise (S/N) is 3. This method is simple and rapid, and has been used in the analysis of rain and liquor with satisfactory results.

Summary Oximidobenzotetronic acid (OBTA) is proposed as a sensitive spectrophotometric reagent for the estimation of 0.5–3.0 ppm of copper(II) at 427 nm in 50% dioxan at pH 5.3–7.5. For the estimation of 2 ppm Cu(II), 1.3 ppm Ni(II), 1.3 ppm Co(II), 3.2 ppm Fe(II), 10.3 ppm Fe(III), 9.7 ppm Ce(IV), 300 ppm acetate, 160 ppm oxalate, 95 ppm tartrate, 50 ppm citrate, as well as Zn(II), Cd(II), Hg(II)) Pb(II), Mn(II), As(III) as well as (V), Th(IV), Be(II), Ce(III), La(III), V(V) and Mo(VI), even when present in large quantities, do not interfere. The interference due to 25 ppm Bi(III), 20 ppm Sb(III), 20 ppm Sn(II), 25 ppm Sn(IV) and 30 ppm W(VI) can be removed by the addition of 95 ppm tartrate ions.

The adsorption of palladium(II), rhodium(III), and platinum(IV) from diluted hydrochloric acid solutions onto Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles has been investigated. The parameters studied include the contact time and the concentrations of metals and other solutes such as H(+) and chloride. The equilibrium time was reached in less than 20 min for all metals. The maximum loading capacity of Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles for Pd(II), Rh(III), and Pt(IV) was determined to be 0.103, 0.149, and 0.068 mmol g(-1), respectively. A sorption mechanism for Pd(II), Rh(III), and Pt(IV) has been proposed and their conditional adsorption equilibrium constants have been determined to be logK=1.72, 1.69, and 1.84, respectively. Different compositions of eluting solution were tested for the recovery of Pt(IV), Pd(II), and Rh(III) from Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles. It was found that 0.5 mol L(-1) HNO(3) can elute all of the metal ions simultaneously, while 1 mol L(-1) NaHSO(3) was an effective eluting solution for Rh(III), and 0.5 mol L(-1) NaClO(4) for Pt(IV). In competitive adsorption, the nanoparticles showed stronger affinity for Rh(III) than for Pd(II) and Pt(IV).

The separation and determination of Co(III), Ni(II), V(V) and Fe(III) chelates with 2-(2-benzothiazolylazo)-5-(3-sulfopropyl)aminophenol (BTASPAP) by reversed-phase ion-pair HPLC was investigated. In the presence of the oxidant potassium iodate, BTASPAP reacts with Co(III), Ni(II), V(V) and Fe(III) to form stable, negatively charged, water-soluble chelates. The chelates were separated on a C(18) siloxane bonded phase and eluted within 7 min with acetonitrile-acetate-water (36:1:63 v/v) containing 0.2 mol 1(-1) acetic acid-sodium acetate buffer (pH 3.0) and 1.0 mmol 1(-1) tetrabutylammonium bromide. The detection limits of Co(III), Ni(II), V(V) and Fe(III) at 565 nm are 0.3, 0.8, 0.3 and 1.0 ng (signal-to-noise ratio = 2), respectively. The method was applied to the determination of Co, Ni, V and Fe in four samples of standard alloys.

Novel hexachlorocyclodiphosph(V)azane of sulfaguanidine, H(4)L, l,3-[N'-amidino-sulfanilamide]-2,2,2,4,4,4-hexachlorocyclodiphosph(V)azane was prepared and its coordination behaviour towards the transition metal ions Fe(III), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and UO(2)(II) was studied. The structures of the isolated products are proposed based on elemental analyses, IR, UV-vis, (1)H NMR, mass spectra, reflectance, magnetic susceptibility measurements and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The hyperfine interactions in the isolated complex compounds were studied using 14.4keV gamma-ray from radioactive (57)Co (M?ssbauer spectroscopy). The data show that the ligand are coordinated to the metal ions via the sulfonamide O and deprotonated NH atoms in an octahedral manner. The H(4)L ligand forms complexes of the general formulae [(MX(z))(2)(H(2)L)H(2)O)(n)] and [(FeSO(4))(2) (H(4)L) (H(2)O)(4)], where X=NO(3) in case of UO(2)(II) and Cl in case of Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II). The molar conductance data show that the complexes are non-electrolytes. The thermal behaviour of the complexes was studied and different thermodynamic parameters were calculated using Coats-Redfern method. Most of the prepared complexes showed high bactericidal activity and some of the complexes show more activity compared with the ligand and standards.

Poly(acryldinitrophenylamidrazone-dinitroacrylphenylhydrazine) chelating fiber was synthesized from polyacrylonitrile fiber and used for enrichment and separation for traces of Au(III), Ru(III), In(III), Bi(III), Zr(IV), V(V), Ga(III) and Ti(IV) ions from solution samples. The acidity, rate, re-use, capacity and interference on the adsorption of ions on the chelating fiber as well as the conditions of desorption of these ions from the chelating fiber were investigated by means of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The results show that 10-100 ngml(-1) of Au(III), Ru(III), In(III), Bi(III), Zr(IV), V(V), Ga(III) and Ti(IV) ions can be quantitatively enriched by the chelating fiber at a 2 mlmin(-1) of flow rate in the range pH 4-5, and desorbed quantitatively with 20 ml of 5 M HCl for In(III), Bi(III), Zr(IV), V(V), Ga(III), Ti(IV) and 20 ml of 4 M HCl+2% CS(NH(2))(2) solution for Au(III), Ru(III) (with recovery>95%). 50- to 500- fold excesses of Fe(III), Al(III), Mg(II), Mn(II), Ca(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) ions cause little interference in the concentration and determination of analyzed ions. When the fiber was reused for 8 times, the recoveries of the above ions enriched by the fiber were still over 87%. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for the enrichment and determination of 10 ngml(-1) Au, Ru, In, Bi, Ga and 1 ngml(-1) Zr, V, Ti were lower than 3.0%. The results obtained for these ions in real solution samples by this method were basically in agreement with the given values with average errors of less than 6.3%. FT-IR spectra show that existence of NNCNHNH, OCNHNH and NO(2) functional groups are verified in chelating fiber, and Au(III) or Ru(III) is mainly combined with nitrogen (or oxygen) of the groups to form a chelate complex.

The optimum chromatographic separation conditions for Co(II), Ni(II), and Fe(III) chelates with 2-(2-thiazolylazo)-5-dimethylaminophenol (TAM) were investigated. The compositions of chelates were also determined by the HPLC method and thus the possible structure of chelates was given. A precolumn derivatization method was used, followed by separation on an octyl-bonded silica stationary phase with a methanol-tetrahydrofuran-water (40:9:51, v/v/v) mobile phase containing pH 5.8 acetate buffer and 1 x 10(-4)M TAM. The detection limits of Co(II), Ni(II), and Fe(III) at 560 nm are 0.03, 0.02 and 0.1 ng (S N = 2 ), respectively. They can be determined by means of the proposed method without interference from other common metal ions and have been determined in five standard alloys with satisfactory results.

Abstract

The Schiff base N-2,4-dihydroxybenzal-D-glucosamine (L), and its Fe(III), Co(III), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized. Magnetic moments suggest that all complexes are high-spin. The Cu(II) chelate in DMF solution has a distorted tetrahedral structure, as shown by ESR and electronic spectra. Detailed studies have been made concerning the solution equilibrium of L with transition metal ions. Stabilities of the complexes are in accord with the Irving-Williams series.

The divalent copper, nickel, cobalt and trivalent chromium, molybdenium and iron chelate compounds derived from bis(acetylacetone) ethylenediimine were grafted on activated silica gel using a batch process in methanolic solution. The sequence of the maximum retention capacity was Cr(III)>Mo(III)>Fe(III)>Co(II)>Ni(II)>Cu(II). Calorimetric titration was employed to study the interaction of activated silica gel with these series of metal chelate compounds. Exothermic enthalpic results were obtained throughout all interactions process. The spontaneity of these systems was reflected in negative and positive free Gibbs energy from entropic values.

The formation constants of some transition metal ions Cr(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Ni(II) and Cu(II) binary complexes containing Schiff bases resulting from condensation of salicylaldehyde with aniline (I), 2-aminopyridine (II), 4-aminopyridine (III) and 2-aminopyrimidine (IV) were determined pH-metrically in ethanolic medium (80%, v/v). The formation constants were determined for all binary complexes. The important infrared (IR) spectral bands corresponding to the active groups in the four ligands and the solid complexes under investigation were studied. The solid complexes have been synthesized and studied by thermogravimetric analysis. The thermal dehydration and decomposition of these complexes were studied kinetically using the integral method applying the Coats-Redfern equation. It was found that the thermal decomposition of the complexes follow second order kinetics. The thermodynamic parameters of the decomposition are also reported. The electronic absorption spectra of the investigated ligands were carried out to determine the pK(a) values spectrophotometrically.

Direct and indirect potentiometric, bipotentiometric and biamperometric titrations with a standard iron(II) solution are described for some inorganic compounds in alkaline media containing hexitols (mannitol, dulcitol and sorbitol). The optimal conditions for titrations based on the Cr(VI) → Cr(III), Mn(IV) → Mn(III) → Mn(II), V(V) → V(IV), Co(III) → Co(II) and U(VI) → U(IV) systems are discussed. Of the hexitols studied, sorbitol has the greatest effect on the value of the redox potential of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) system; the Ef° value is about —1.10 V vs. SCE.
