The photopolymerization of bicontinuous microemulsions was simultaneously monitored with differential scanning calorimetry and fluorescence. The kinetics and mechanism of the reaction were studied throughout the entire photopolymerization reaction. The role played by the surfactant in the kinetics and morphology was studied. The nature of the surfactant changed the autoacceleration process and final conversion. The behavior was explained as a result of the differences in the interfacial properties. Anionic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) gave rise to a more flexible interfacial film than anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), resulting in competition between the intramolecular and intermolecular reactions in the former systems. As cyclization did not contribute to the increase in the degree of crosslinking, SDS photopolymerization gave solids with a more rigid microstructure. Fluorescence methodology was applied to monitor bicontinuous microemulsion polymerization and to reveal the microstructure and morphology development during photopolymerization. The microemulsion composition was designed to prepare nanoporous, crosslinked materials. Even though the nanostructure of the precursor microemulsions was not retained because of phase separation during polymerization, mesoporous solids were obtained. Their morphologies depended on the nature of the surfactant, and membranes with open cells were successfully prepared with CTAB, whereas more complex morphologies resulted with SDS. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A general micellar electrokinetic chromatographic (MEKC) strategy for the impurity profiling of drugs was developed involving a sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) MEKC system. With this combination, in principle, each sample component passes the detector in at least one of the two MEKC systems provided that separation buffers of the same pH are used in both systems. In order to select the proper MEKC systems, the electroosmotic flow (EOF) and micelle migration time (t(mc)) were determined for separation buffers of several pH values, containing various amounts of surfactant and organic modifier. The selectivity of the MEKC systems was studied using a mixture of compounds with a wide range of physico-chemical properties. The final selection of two adequate MEKC systems for this approach was based on the requirements that the t(mc) (i.e., analysis time) of both systems was below 20 min and that the t(mc)/t(eof) ratio was above 3 or 2 for the SDS and CTAB system, respectively. Furthermore, the systems should provide high efficiency, exhibit differences in selectivity and use moderate concentrations of modifier and surfactant, so that, if needed, further optimization is possible. The selected MEKC systems contained 60 mM SDS or 10 mM CTAB, respectively, in a phosphate buffer (pH 7.5) with 10% acetonitrile. Some test compounds with extreme mobilities were used to demonstrate the suitability of the MEKC approach to detect each component of a sample. The potential of the proposed MEKC combination for impurity profiling was demonstrated by the analysis of fluvoxamine with several impurities at the 0.1% level.  相似文献

The influence of the sorbent preparation protocol and separation parameters on the selectivity and chromatographic efficiency of super-porous molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) monoliths in capillary electrochromatography (CEC) was studied. Chiral templates were employed and enantiomer separation and resolution were used as measures of imprint selectivity and column efficiency, respectively; the latter was in addition studied by chromatography of non-related aromatic structures. The polymer preparation was varied with respect to monomer composition in the pre-polymerisation mixture and also the use of single versus multiple template(s). The separation parameters investigated were type and content of organic solvent and surfactant modifier in the electrolyte. It was found that acetone and acetonitrile in buffer mixtures provided enantiomer separation of enantiomers of the template and also structural analogues; however, the degree of separation was greatly influenced by the content in the electrolyte. Three surfactants, sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyoxyethylene sorbitanmonolaurate (Tween 20), were examined as electrolyte modifiers. It was found that addition of SDS decreased and CTAB and Tween 20 increased the enantiomer separation. SDS and CTAB could be used up to 1 mM concentration whereas Tween could be used up to 90 mM concentration without causing baseline disturbances. The effects found and demonstrated strongly suggest that these parameters are to be considered during optimisation of an MIP-CEC system.  相似文献

The separation of anionic, cationic and neutral drugs in microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) was studied with a statistical experimental design. The concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, surfactant), 1-butanol (co-surfactant) and borate buffer and the factors Brij 35 (surfactant), 2-propanol (organic solvent) and cassette temperature were varied simultaneously, while the parameters pH (9.2), the concentration of octane (oil, 0.8% w/w), the voltage (10 kV) and the dimension of the fused-silica capillary, were kept constant. Eight different model substances were chosen with different hydrophobicities. Two of the analytes were positively charged, two were negatively charged, and the remaining four were neutral or close to neutral at the pH explored. The importance of each parameter on the separation window, the plate height and the retention factor for each of the analytes was studied by means of multiple linear regression (MLR) models. A new response was evaluated for anions, the quotient between the effective mobility in the microemulsion and the effective mobility in the corresponding buffer. Factors affecting selectivity changes were also explored, and it was found that SDS and 2-propanol had the largest effect on selectivity.  相似文献

The selectivity of microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) was studied utilizing some uncharged model compounds like aromatic amides, steroids, and esters of nicotinic acid. The cosurfactant of the microemulsion was found to be the most important factor affecting the selectivity, and alteration between 6.6% of 1-propanol, 1-butanol, tetrahydrofuran, and 2-ethoxyethanol caused several substantial changes in the migration order. In addition, the nature of the surfactant was found to significantly affect the selectivity. In this case, changes in order of migration was observed by replacement of half the content of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) with either sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (SDOSS), 3-(N,N-dimethylmyristylammonio) propanesulfonate (MAPS), polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate (Tween 21), and polyoxyethylene 23 lauryl ether (Brij 35). MEEKC was also accomplished with 3.3% of the anionic surfactant sodium cholate and with the cationic surfactant N-cetyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium bromide (CTMA). Both provided substantial differences in selectivity as compared to the SDS-based systems. With SDS as surfacant, the concentration was varied within 1.0-4.5%. Minor selectivity changes were observed as the concentration of the surfacant was reduced, but the major effect was a reduction in the total migration time. The organic solvent of the microemulsion droplets was found only to have minor impact on the selectivity.  相似文献

Micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC) is a branch of capillary electrophoretic techniques, in which surfactant micelles are added to the electrolyte solution as pseudostationary phase. Separation in MECC is based on electrophoretic mobilities of the analytes when partitioned into micelles1. In this work, four acidic drugs similar in structure with aryl carboxylic acid were separated by MECC. The effects of type of surfactant, such as anionic surfactant SDS, nonionic …  相似文献

The migration behaviour of isoquinoline, quinoline, and methyl derivatives of quinoline in different capillary electrophoretic modes has been systematically investigated. Optimised separation conditions were established by varying the key parameters (solvent, pH, temperature, surfactant concentration, core phase) for aqueous and non‐aqueous capillary zone electrophoresis (NACE), micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) with anionic or non‐ionic micelles (SDS, Brij 35), and microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) with charged or uncharged microemulsion droplets. A separation of all quinolines could be achieved by MEEKC with charged droplets, by MEKC or by formamide‐based NACE. Comparing the separations with respect to separation selectivity, substantial changes in migration order could be observed between the different techniques. Regarding separation efficiency, the number of theoretical plates and limits of detection (LOD) have been compared. The best LODs were achieved using SDS as surfactant in MEKC, followed by MEEKC.  相似文献

A microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) method was developed to analyze and detect eight food colorants (tartrazine, fast green FCF, brilliant blue FCF, allura red AC, indigo carmine, sunset yellow FCF, new coccine, and carminic acid), which are commonly used as food additives in various food products. The effects of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant, organic modifier, cosurfactant, and oil were examined in order to optimize the separation. The amount of organic modifier (acetonitrile) and SDS surfactant were determined as apparent influences on the separation resolution while the type of oil and cosurfactant rarely affected the separation selectivity of the eight colorants. A highly efficient MEEKC separation method, where the eight colorants were separated with baseline resolution within 14 min, was achieved by using a microemulsion solution of pH 2.0 containing 3.31% SDS, 0.81% octane, 6.61% 1-butanol, and 10% acetonitrile. This optimal MEEKC method has a higher separation efficiency and similar detection limit when compared to conventional capillary electrophoresis (CE) method. Furthermore, a sample pretreatment is rarely needed when this MEEKC technique is used to analyze colorants in food products, whereas a suitable sample pretreatment (for example solid-phase extraction) has to be employed prior to CE separation in order to eliminate matrix interferences resulting from the constituents of the food sample.  相似文献

The solubilization of water in w/o microemulsions formed with mixed-surfactants containing one anionic and one cationic surfactant and alcohol was studied as a function of alkyl chain length of oil (C6 to C16), mixed-surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB, or cetylpyridinium bromide CPB), and alcohol (1-butanol, 1-pentanol, 1-hexanol). The results show that the solubilization of water in microemulsion systems increases significantly with the mixed-surfactants due to the synergistic effect resulting from the strong Coulombic interactions between cationic and anionic surfactants and the solubilizing efficiency increases as the chain length or concentration of alcohol increases. With increasing the oil chain length the solubilization for water increases, decreases, and has the chain length compatibility effect when the systems contain 1-hexanol, 1-butanol, 1-pentanol, respectively. The total solubilizing capacity increases as the surfactant concentration (keep the ratio of SDS to butanol constant) increases.  相似文献

The behavior of mixed cationic/anionic and cationic/nonionic surfactants solutions have been studied by viscosimetry. The systems studied were sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and CTAB/Brij (polyoxyethylene lauryl ether, n = 10 and 23) in aqueous and sodium chloride solutions. The relative viscosity of single nonionic surfactant solutions is larger than that of SDS or CTAB solutions. It increases with the number of ethylene oxide groups. In the mixed systems, viscosity deviates from ideal behavior. The deviation results from electrostatic interactions. The surfactant mixture composition affects the self-assembled microstructure and rheology. A new mixed system that forms clear micellar solution above CMC was detected. In CTAB/Brij systems, the experimental data also deviate from ideal behavior due to mixed micelle formation and electroviscous effect. This effect is less pronounced than that of SDS/CTAB system and could be suppressed by adding an electrolyte (NaCl).  相似文献

The physical, electrophoretic and chromatographic properties (mean diameter, electroosmotic flow, electrophoretic mobility, elution range, efficiency, retention, and hydrophobic, shape, and chemical selectivity) of three surfactant vesicles and one phospholipid vesicle were investigated and compared to a conventional micellar pseudostationary phase comprised of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Chemical selectivity (solute-pseudostationary phase interactions) was discussed from the perspective of linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) analysis. Two of the surfactant vesicles were formulated from nonstoichiometric aqueous mixtures of oppositely charged, single-tailed surfactants, either cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium octyl sulfate (SOS) in a 3:7 mole ratio or octyltrimethylammonium bromide (OTAB) and SDS in a 7:3 mole ratio. The remaining surfactant vesicle was comprised solely of bis(2-ethylhexyl)sodium sulfosuccinate (AOT) in 10% v/v methanol, and the phospholipid vesicle consisted of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) and phosphatidyl serine (PS) in 8:2 mole ratio. The mean diameters of the vesicles were 76.3 nm (AOT), 86.9 nm (CTAB/SOS), 90.1 nm (OTAB/SDS), and 108 nm (POPC/PS). Whereas the coefficient of electroosmotic flow (10(-4) cm2 V(-1) s(-1)) varied considerably (1.72 (OTAB/SDS), 3.77 (CTAB/SOS), 4.05 (AOT), 5.26 (POPC/PS), 5.31 (SDS)), the electrophoretic mobility was fairly consistent (-3.33 to -3.87 x 10(-4) cm2 V(-1) s(-1)), except for the OTAB/SDS vesicles (-1.68). This resulted in elution ranges that were slightly to significantly larger than that observed for SDS (3.12): 3.85 (POPC/PS), 8.6 (CTAB/SOS), 10.1 (AOT), 15.2 (OTAB/SDS). Significant differences were also noted in the efficiency (using propiophenone) and hydrophobic selectivity; the plate counts were lower with the OTAB/SDS and POPC/PS vesicles than the other pseudostationary phases (< or = 75,000/m vs. > 105,000/m), and the methylene selectivity was considerably higher with the CTAB/SOS and OTAB/SDS vesicles compared to the others (ca. 3.10 vs. < or = 2.6). In terms of shape selectivity, only the CTAB/SOS vesicles were able to separate all three positional isomers of nitrotoluene with near-baseline resolution. Finally, through LSER analysis, it was determined that the cohesiveness and hydrogen bond acidity of these pseudostationary phases have the greatest effect on solute retention and selectivity.  相似文献

The influence of a surfactant over water on the polymorphism and crystal size of calcium carbonate produced by reaction crystallization in microemulsion systems was investigated in a mixing tank reactor. The crystallization was induced by the reaction between two aqueous micelle solutions (Na2CO3-CaCl2) stabilized by anionic surfactants, SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) or AOT (sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate). With increasing surfactant ratio to water, the water-in-oil microemulsion was stably developed and the morphology of the calcium carbonate crystallized in the micelles sharply transformed from calcite to vaterite. The influence of SDS on the polymorphism and crystal size of calcium carbonate was much clearer than that of AOT. In addition, with AOT, certain step changes in the morphology and crystal size occurred around a surfactant ratio to water (R=[H2O]/[surfactant]) of 15 due to a two-phase separation of the microemulsion.  相似文献

The separation of neutral hydrophobic corticosteroids (cortisone, cortisone acetate, hydrocortisone, hydrocortisone acetate, prednisolone and prednisolone acetate) by microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) was studied. In the preparation of microemulsion, heptane was the solvent, n-butanol the co-surfactant and, as anionic surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) or taurodeoxycholic acid sodium salt (STDC) were employed. Using an acidic running buffer, (phosphate pH 2.5) a strong suppression of the electroosmotic flow (EOF) was observed; this resulted in a fast anodic migration of the analytes partitioned into the negatively charged microemulsion droplets. Under these conditions, STDC showed better separation of corticosteroids than the conventional SDS; however, the use of a single anionic surfactant did not provide the required selectivity. The addition of the neutral surfactant polyoxyethylene glycol octadecyl ether (Brij 76) significantly altered the migration of each analytes allowing a better tuning of separation; however, in order to obtain adequate resolution between couples of adjacent critical peaks, the addition of neutral cyclodextrins (CDs) was found to be essential. This apparently complex system (CD-MEEKC), was optimized by studying the effect of the most important parameters affecting separation: STDC concentration, Brij 76 concentration, nature and concentration of cyclodextrins. Following a rational step-by-step approach, the optimised conditions providing the complete separation of the analytes were found to be: 4.0% STDC, 2.5% Brij 76, 6.6% n-butanol, 1.36% heptane and 85.54% of a solution 5 mM beta-CD in 50 mM phosphate buffer (pH 2.5). The optimized system was preliminary applied to the detection of corticosteroids related substances at impurity level and it could be considered a useful orthogonal alternative to HPLC methods.  相似文献

Surfactant based enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is an interesting area of research for several petroleum researchers. In the present work, individual and mixed systems of anionic and cationic surfactants consisting of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in different molar ratios were tested for their synergistic effect on the crude oil-water interfacial tension (IFT) and enhanced oil recovery performance. The combination of these two surfactant systems showed a higher surface activity as compared to individual surfactants. The effect of mixed surfactant systems on the IFT and critical micellar concentration (CMC) is strongly depends on molar ratios of the two surfactant. Much lower CMC values were observed in case of mixed surfactant systems prepared at different molar ratios as compared to individual surfactant systems. The lowest CMC value was found when the molar concentration of SDS was higher than the CTAB. When the individual and mixed surfacant systems were tested for EOR performance through flooding experiments, higher ultimate oil recovery was obtained from mixed surfactant flooding compared to individual surfactants. Combination of SDS and CTAB or probably other anionic-cationic surfactants show synergism with substantial ability to reduce crude oil water IFT and can be a promising EOR method.  相似文献

In the present study, we investigate the self-association and mixed micellization of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and a cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of SDS, CTAB, and mixed (SDS + CTAB) surfactants was measured by electrical conductivity, dye solubilization, and surface tension measurements. The surface properties (viz., C20 (the surfactant concentration required to reduce the surface tension by 20 mN/m), ΠCMC (the surface pressure at the CMC), Γmax (maximum surface excess concentration at the air/water interface), and Amin (the minimum area per surfactant molecule at the air/water interface)) of SDS, CTAB, and (SDS + CTAB) micellar/mixed micellar systems were evaluated. The thermodynamic parameters of the micellar (SDS and CTAB), and mixed micellar (SDS + CTAB) systems were evaluated.

In this study, the photoisomerization of trans-sfilbene was carried out in water in oil (W/O) microemulsions by using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS),dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant, respectively. The catalytic effect of microemulsion on this reaction is closely related to the structure of surfactant. When there is no photosensitizer 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (DCA),the surfactant with shorter hydrophobic chain is preferred, while in the presence of DCA,the surfactant with anionic polar group is preferred.  相似文献

Applicability of the nitromethane selective quenching rule for discriminating between alternant versus nonalternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is examined for 20 representative PAH solutes dissolved in micellar sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) + cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), SDS + dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), SDS + Brij-35, and SDS + sodium octanoate (SO) mixed surfactant solvent media. Experimental results show that nitromethane quenched fluorescence of all 8 alternant PAHs studied in the four different solvent systems. Unexpected quenching behavior was observed, however, in the case of nonalternant PAHs. Nitromethane quenched fluorescence emission of nonalternant PAHs dissolved in the SDS + SO solvent media, which is contrary to the selective quenching rule. In the case of the mixed anionic + cationic surfactant solvent media, nitromethane quenching selectivity was restored at concentration ratios of approximately 4 : 1 (anionic:cationic) or less.
