A numerical study is performed to examine the heat transfer characteristics of natural convection past a vertical cone under the combined effects of magnetic field and thermal radiation. The surface of the cone is subjected to a variable surface heat flux. The fluid considered is a gray,absorbing-emitting radiation but a non-scattering medium. With approximate transformations, the boundary layer equations governing the flow are reduced to non-dimensional equations valid in the free convection regime. The dimensionless governing equations are solved by an implicit finite difference method of Crank-Nicolson type which is fast convergent, accurate, and unconditionally stable.Numerical results are obtained and presented for velocity, temperature, local and average wall shear stress, and local and average Nusselt number in air and water. The present results are compared with the previous published work and are found to be in excellent agreement.  相似文献

The unsteady mixed convection boundary layer flow over a vertical cone is considered to investigate the combined effects of the buoyancy force, thermal and mass diffusion in the presence of the first order chemical reaction and surface mass transfer. The unsteadiness is caused by the time dependent free stream velocity varying arbitrarily with time. The governing boundary layer equations are transformed into a non-dimensional form by a group of non-similar transformations. The resulting system of coupled non-linear partial differential equations is solved numerically by the combination of quasi-linearization technique and an implicit finite difference scheme. Numerical computations are performed for different values of the parameters to display the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles graphically. Both accelerating and decelerating free stream velocities are considered. Numerical results are presented for the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles as well as for the skin-friction coefficient, local Nusselt number and local Sherwood number. The obtained results are compared with previously reported ones and are found to be in excellent agreement.  相似文献

A numerical study is carried out for thermal and concentration driven transient natural convection adjacent to a vertical cylinder. The temperature and concentration level at the cylinder surface are assumed to vary as power-law type functions, with exponents n and m respectively in the streamwise co-ordinate. The governing boundary layer equations are converted into a non-dimensional form. A Crank-Nicolson type of implicit finite-difference method is used to solve the governing non-linear set of equations. Numerical results are obtained and presented with various thermal and mass Grashof numbers and power law variations. Transient effects of velocity, temperature and concentration are analyzed. Local and average skin-friction, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are shown graphically.  相似文献

The steady mixed convection boundary layer flow over a horizontal circular cylinder, generated by Newtonian heating in which the heat transfer from the surface is proportional to the local surface temperature, is considered in this study. The governing boundary layer equations are first transformed into a system of non-dimensional equations via the non-dimensional variables, and then into non-similar equations before they are solved numerically using a numerical scheme known as the Keller-box method. Numerical solutions are obtained for the skin friction coefficient Re 1/2 C f and the local wall temperature θ w (x) as well as the velocity and temperature profiles with two parameters, namely the mixed convection parameter λ and the Prandtl number Pr.  相似文献

Laminar natural convection flow and heat transfer over a vertical frustum of a cone has been studied. The governing boundary layer equations are solved using local non-similarity method for constant wall heat flux. The local similarity and the local non-similarity two and three-equation models are constructed and the resulting equations are solved numerically. Results obtained from two and three-equation models are in good agreement. The numerical values of the flow and temperature functions required to calculate the surface skin friction and heat transfer rate are reported for various values of Prandtl numbers.  相似文献

The non-similar solution of an unsteady mixed convection laminar boundary layer flow over a vertical cone in the presence of non-uniform surface mass transfer through slot has been obtained while the axis of cone is inline with the flow. The unsteadiness is caused by the time dependent free stream velocity. The governing boundary layer equations are transformed into a non-dimensional form by a group of non-similar transformations. The resulting coupled non-linear partial differential equations have been solved numerically by the combination of quasi-linearization technique and an implicit finite difference scheme. Numerical computations are performed for different values of the parameters to display the velocity and temperature profiles graphically. Both accelerating and decelerating free stream velocities are considered. Numerical results are reported to display the effects of non-uniform single and double slot suction (injection) on skin friction and heat transfer coefficients at the wall. Further, the effects of Prandtl number, buoyancy and mass transfer (suction or injection) parameters at different stream-wise locations for various times on velocity and temperature profiles, and on skin friction and heat transfer coefficients are also presented in this paper.  相似文献

The problem of combined heat and mass transfer by natural convection over a permeable cone embedded in a uniform porous medium in the presence of an external magnetic field and internal heat generation or absorption effects is formulated. The cone surface is maintained at either constant temperature and constant concentration or uniform heat and mass fluxes. In addition, the cone surface is assumed permeable in order to allow for possible fluid wall suction or blowing. The resulting governing equations are non-dimensionalized and transformed into a non-similar form and then solved numerically by an implicit, iterative, finite-difference method. Comparisons with previously published work are performed and excellent agreement between the results is obtained. A parametric study of the physical parameters is conducted and a representative set of numerical results for the temperature and concentration profiles as well as the local Nusselt number and the Sherwood number is illustrated graphically to show special trends of the solutions. An analysis is presented to investigate the influence of viscous dissipation on a free convection flow over a vertical cone with a variable surface heat flux under the action of a transverse magnetic field. The heat transfer characteristics of the free convection flow are investigated numerically. Numerical solutions for transformed governing equations with a variable surface heat flux are obtained. Velocity, temperature, local shear stress, and heat transfer coefficients are calculated for various values of the problem parameters and presented in the graphical form. The effects of the magnetic parameter, the dissipation number, the power-law index, the angle between the cone generatrix and the vertical line, and the Prandtl number on the flow are discussed. For validation of the present numerical results, they are compared with available experimental data and are found to agree well.  相似文献

This work studies the Soret and Dufour effects on the double-diffusive free convection over a downward-pointing vertical truncated cone with variable wall heat and mass fluxes in fluid-saturated porous media. A coordinate transformation is used to derive the nondimensional boundary-layer governing equations, and the obtained nonsimilar equations are then solved by the cubic spline collocation method. Results for local surface temperature and the local surface concentration are presented as functions of Soret parameters, Dufour parameters, power-law exponents, buoyancy ratios, and Lewis numbers. Results show that increasing the Dufour parameter tends to increase the local surface temperature, while it tends to decrease the local surface concentration. An increase in the Soret number leads to a decrease in the local surface temperature for buoyancy assisting flows, while it leads to an increase in the local surface temperature for buoyancy opposing flows. Increasing the Soret number tends to increase the local surface concentration. Moreover, the local surface temperature and the local surface concentration of the truncated cones with higher power-law exponents are lower than those with lower exponents.  相似文献

This article investigates a theoretical and numerical study for the effect of viscous dissipation on the steady flow with heat transfer of Newtonian fluid toward a permeable stretching surface embedded in a porous medium with a second-order slip and thermal slip. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are converted into nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) using similarity variables. The resulting ODEs are successfully solved numerically with the help of Chebyshev finite difference method. Graphically results are shown for non-dimensional velocities and temperature. The effects of the porous parameter, the suction (injection) parameter, Eckert number, first- and second-order velocity slip parameter, the thermal slip parameter and the Prandtl number on the flow and temperature profiles are presented. Moreover, the local skin-friction and Nusselt numbers are presented. A comparison of numerical results is made with the earlier published results under limiting cases.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to study the effect of non-uniform single and double slot suction/injection into a steady mixed convection boundary layer flow over a vertical cone, while the axis of the cone is inline with the flow. The governing boundary layer equations are transformed into a non-dimensional form by a group of non-similar trans- formations. The resulting coupled non-linear partial differential equations are solved nu- merically by employing the quasi-linearization technique and an implicit finite-difference scheme. Numerical computations are performed for different values of the dimensionless parameters to display the velocity and temperature profiles graphically. Also, numerical results are presented for the skin friction and heat transfer coefficients. Results indicate that the skin friction and heat transfer coefficients increase with non-uniform slot suction, but the effect of non-uniform slot injection is just opposite.  相似文献

The problem of steady, laminar, mixed convection boundary-layer flow over a vertical cone embedded in a porous medium saturated with a nanofluid is studied, in the presence of thermal radiation. The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis with Rosseland diffusion approximation. The cone surface is maintained at a constant temperature and a constant nanoparticle volume fraction. The resulting governing equations are non-dimensionalized and transformed into a non-similar form and then solved by Keller box method. A comparison is made with the available results in the literature, and our results are in very good agreement with the known results. A parametric study of the physical parameters is made and a representative set of numerical results for the local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are presented graphically. Also, the salient features of the results are analyzed and discussed.  相似文献

Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) bioconvection of an incompressible electrically conducting nanofluid near a vertical wavy surface saturated porous medium containing both nanoparticle and gyrotactic microorganisms is investigated. The nanofluid is represented by a model that includes both Brownian motion and thermophoresis effects. A suitable set of non-dimensional variables are used to transform the governing boundary layer equations into a dimensionless form. The resulting nonlinear system is mapped to the vertical flat plate domain, and a non-similar solution is used to the obtained equations. The obtained non-similar system is then solved numerically using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The influence of various physical parameters on the local Nusselt number, the local Sherwood number, the local density number of the motile microorganisms, the dimensionless velocity, the dimensionless temperature, and the rescaled density of motile microorganisms is studied. It is found that the local Nusselt number, the local Sherwood number, and the local density number of the motile microorganisms decrease by increasing either the Grashof number or the magnetic field parameter.  相似文献

This communication considers the steady converging/diverging flow of a non-Newtonian viscous power-law fluid in a round cone. The motion is driven by a sink/source of mass at the origin. It is shown that the problem permits exact similarity solution for a particular value (n=4/3) of the fluid index. In this case a complete set of governing equations can be reduced to an ordinary differential equation, which is solved numerically for different values of the main non-dimensional parameters (the cone angle and the dimensionless sink/source intensity).  相似文献

An analysis of the effect of viscous dissipative heat on two‐dimensional viscous incompressible fluid flow past a semi‐infinite vertical plate with variable surface temperature is carried out. The dimensionless governing equations are unsteady, two‐dimensional, coupled, and non‐linear governing equations. A most accurate, unconditionally stable and fast converging implicit finite‐difference scheme is used to solve the non‐dimensional governing equations. Velocity and temperature of the flow have been presented graphically for various parameters occurring in the problem. The local and average skin friction and Nusselt number are also shown graphically. It is observed that greater viscous dissipative heat causes a rise in the temperature. This paper uses thermal non-equilibrium model to study transient heat transfer by natural convection of a nanofluid over a vertical wavy surface. The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis. Three-temperature model is applied to represent the local thermal non-equilibrium among the particle, fluid, and solid-matrix phases. Finite difference method is used to solve the dimensionless governing equations of the problem. The obtained results are displayed in 2D graphs to illustrate the influences of the different physical parameters on local skin-friction coefficient, local Nusselt numbers for fluid, particle and solid phases and local Sherwood number. The results for velocity component, nanoparticle volume fraction, fluid temperature, particle temperature and solid-matrix temperature are presented in 3D graphs as a function of the axial and transverse coordinates. All the obtained results are discussed.  相似文献

The effect of a radial magnetic field on separation of a binary mixture of incompressible viscous thermally and electrically conducting fluids confined between two concentric rotating circular cylinders with different angular velocity is examined. The equations governing the motion, temperature and concentration in cylindrical polar coordinate are solved analytically. The solution obtained in closed form for concentration distribution is plotted against the radial distances from the surface of the inner circular cylinder for various values of non-dimensional parameters. It is found that the non-dimensional parameters viz. the Hartmann number, thermal diffusion number, baro diffusion number, rotational Reynolds number, the product of Prandtl number and Eckert number, magnetic Prandtl number and the ratio of the angular velocities of inner and outer cylinders affects the species separation of rarer and lighter component significantly. The problem discussed here derives its application in the basic fluid dynamics separation processes to separate the rarer component of the different isotopes of heavier molecules where electromagnetic method of separation does not work.  相似文献

A finite-difference analysis for the transient free convection flow of an incompressible viscous fluid past a vertical cone with variable wall surface temperature T w (x) = T + a x n varying as power function of distance from the apex (x = 0) is presented here. The dimensionless governing equations of the flow that are unsteady, coupled and non-linear partial differential equations are solved by an efficient, accurate and unconditionally stable finite difference scheme of Crank-Nicolson type. The velocity and temperature fields have been studied for various parameters such as Prandtl number and n (exponent in power law variation in surface temperature). The local as well as average skin-friction and Nusselt number are also presented and analyzed graphically. The present results are compared with available results in literature and are found to be in good agreement.  相似文献

In this paper, the problem of laminar free convection from a vertical permeable circular cone maintained with non-uniform surface heat flux is considered. The governing boundary layer equations are reduced non-similar boundary layer equations with surface heat flux proportional to x n (where x is the distance measured from the leading edge). The solutions of the reduced equations are obtained by using three distinct solution methodologies; namely, (i) perturbation solution for small transpiration parameter, ξ, (ii) asymptotic solution for large ξ, and (iii) the finite difference solutions for all ξ. The solutions are presented in terms of local skin-friction and local Nusselt number for smaller values of Prandtl number and heat flux gradient and are displayed in tabular form as well as graphically. Effects of pertinent parameters on velocity and temperature profiles are also shown graphically. Solutions obtained by finite difference method are also compared with the perturbation solutions for small and large ξ and found to be in excellent agreement. Received on 1 October 1999  相似文献

This paper presents an analytical solution of the problem of free-convective magnetohydrodynamic flow over a stretched sheet with the Hall effect and mass transfer taken into account. A similarity transform reduces the Navier-Stokes, energy, Ohm law, and mass-transfer equations to a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The governing equations are solved analytically using an analytical method for solving nonlinear problems, namely, the homotopy analysis method. The results are compared with the results of a promising numerical method of differential quadrature developed by the authors. It is shown that there is very good agreement between analytical results and those obtained by the differential quadrature method. The differential quadrature method was validated, and the effects of non-dimensional parameters on the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles were studied.  相似文献
