Joint estimation of coil sensitivities and output image (JSENSE) is a promising approach that improves the reconstruction of parallel magnetic resonance imaging (pMRI). However, when acceleration factor increases, the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of JSENSE reconstruction decreases as quickly as that of the conventional pMRI. Although sparse constraints have been used to improve the JSENSE reconstruction in recent years, these constraints only use the sparsity of the output image, which cannot fully exploit the prior information of pMRI. In this paper, we use the sparsity of coil images, instead of the output image, to exploit more prior information for JSENSE. Numerical simulation, phantom and in vivo experiments demonstrate that the proposed method has better performance than the SparseSENSE method and the constrained JSENSE method using the sparsity of the output image only. 相似文献

Purpose
Device tracking is crucial for interventional MRI (iMRI) because conventional device materials do not contribute to the MR signal, may cause susceptibility artifacts and are generally invisible if moved out of the scan plane. A robust method for wireless tracking and dynamic guidance of interventional devices equipped with wirelessly connected resonant circuits (wRC) is presented. Methods
The proposed method uses weak spatially-selective excitation pulses with very low flip angle (0.3°), a Hadamard multiplexed tracking scheme and employs phase-field dithering to obtain the 3D position of a wRC. RF induced heating experiments (ASTM protocol) and balloon angioplasties of the iliac artery were conducted in a perfused vascular phantom and three Thiel soft-embalmed human cadavers. Results
Device tip tracking was interleaved with various user-selectable fast pulse sequences receiving a geometry update from the tracking kernel in less than 30 ms. Integrating phase-field dithering significantly improved our tracking robustness for catheters with small diameters (4–6 French). The volume root mean square distance error was 2.81 mm (standard deviation: 1.31 mm). No significant RF induced heating (< 0.6 °C) was detected during heating experiments. Conclusion
This tip tracking approach provides flexible, fast and robust feedback loop, intuitive iMRI scanner interaction, does not constrain the physician and delivers very low specific absorption rates. Devices with wRC can be exchanged during a procedure without modifications to the iMRI setup or the pulse sequence. A drawback of our current implementation is that position information is available for a single tracking coil only. This was satisfactory for balloon angioplasties of the iliac artery, but further studies are required for complex navigation and catheter shapes before animal trials and clinical application. 相似文献3.

Purpose
To determine whether gadolinium ethoxybenzyldiethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA) administration affects hepatic fat quantification by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) using the fast breath-hold high-speed T2-corrected multiecho (HISTO) technique.Materials and Methods
Seventy-six patients underwent Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced liver MR and 15 sec breath-hold HISTO MRS (4 times), twice before and twice after Gd-EOB-DTPA administration. Two consecutive MRSs were performed immediately before the dynamic study. Post-contrast MRS was performed twice continuously, approximately 15 min after contrast injection, prior to obtaining 20-min hepatobiliary phase images. We used paired t-test and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) to evaluate the variability of the mean fat fraction (FF) on pre-contrast MRS and post-contrast MRS and the effect of the contrast agent on the mean FF.Results
The mean FFs were not significantly different between pre-contrast MRS and post-contrast MRS (6.50% ± 6.54 versus 6.70% ± 6.61, P = 0.15). The ICC of FF calculation between pre- and post-contrast MRS was 0.984. The ICCs for the FF magnitude between pre- and post-contrast MRS were 0.452, 0.771, and 0.995 for FF < 5%, FF 5–10%, and FF ≥ 10%, respectively. Conclusion
Gd-EOB-DTPA does not appear to influence hepatic fat quantification, especially for patients with hepatic steatosis. 相似文献4.
Magnetic resonance image reconstruction using trained geometric directions in 2D redundant wavelets domain and non-convex optimization 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Reducing scanning time is significantly important for MRI. Compressed sensing has shown promising results by undersampling the k-space data to speed up imaging. Sparsity of an image plays an important role in compressed sensing MRI to reduce the image artifacts. Recently, the method of patch-based directional wavelets (PBDW) which trains geometric directions from undersampled data has been proposed. It has better performance in preserving image edges than conventional sparsifying transforms. However, obvious artifacts are presented in the smooth region when the data are highly undersampled. In addition, the original PBDW-based method does not hold obvious improvement for radial and fully 2D random sampling patterns. In this paper, the PBDW-based MRI reconstruction is improved from two aspects: 1) An efficient non-convex minimization algorithm is modified to enhance image quality; 2) PBDW are extended into shift-invariant discrete wavelet domain to enhance the ability of transform on sparsifying piecewise smooth image features. Numerical simulation results on vivo magnetic resonance images demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the original PBDW in terms of removing artifacts and preserving edges. 相似文献

Three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has shown great potential for studying the impact of prematurity and pathology on brain development. We have investigated the potential of optimized T1-weighted 3D magnetization-prepared rapid gradient-echo imaging (MP-RAGE) for obtaining contrast between white matter (WM) and gray matter (GM) in neonates at 3 T. Using numerical simulations, we predicted that the inversion time (TI) for obtaining strongest contrast at 3 T is approximately 2 s for neonates, whereas for adults, this value is approximately 1.3 s. The optimal neonatal TI value was found to be insensitive to reasonable variations of the assumed T1 relaxation times. The maximum theoretical contrast for neonates was found to be approximately one third of that for adults. Using the optimized TI values, MP-RAGE images were obtained from seven neonates and seven adults at 3 T, and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) was measured for WM versus five GM regions. Compared to adults, neonates exhibited lower CNR between cortical GM and WM and showed a different pattern of regional variation in CNR. These results emphasize the importance of sequence optimization specifically for neonates and demonstrate the challenge in obtaining strong contrast in neonatal brain with T1-weighted 3D imaging. 相似文献

Purpose
This study aimed to further investigate the effects of agmatine on brain edema in the rats with middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) injury using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) monitoring and biochemical and histopathologic evaluation.Materials and methods
Following surgical induction of MCAO for 90 min, agmatine was injected 5 min after beginning of reperfusion and again once daily for the next 3 post-operative days. The events during ischemia and reperfusion were investigated by T2-weighted images (T2WI), serial diffusion-weighted images (DWI), calculated apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images (CE-T1WI) during 3 h–72 h in a 1.5 T Siemens MAGNETON Avanto Scanner. Lesion volumes were analyzed in a blinded and randomized manner. Triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC), Nissl, and Evans Blue stainings were performed at the corresponding sections. Results
Increased lesion volumes derived from T2WI, DWI, ADC, CE-T1WI, and TTC all were noted at 3 h and peaked at 24 h–48 h after MCAO injury. TTC-derived infarct volumes were not significantly different from the T2WI, DWI-, and CE-T1WI-derived lesion volumes at the last imaging time (72 h) point except for significantly smaller ADC lesions in the MCAO model (P < 0.05). Volumetric calculation based on TTC-derived infarct also correlated significantly stronger to volumetric calculation based on last imaging time point derived on T2WI, DWI or CE-T1WI than ADC (P < 0.05). At the last imaging time point, a significant increase in Evans Blue extravasation and a significant decrease in Nissl-positive cells numbers were noted in the vehicle-treated MCAO injured animals. The lesion volumes derived from T2WI, DWI, CE-T1WI, and Evans blue extravasation as well as the reduced numbers of Nissl-positive cells were all significantly attenuated in the agmatine-treated rats compared with the control ischemia rats (P < 0.05).Conclusion
Our results suggest that agmatine has neuroprotective effects against brain edema on a reperfusion model after transient cerebral ischemia. 相似文献7.

Constrained energy minimization (CEM) has proven highly effective for hyperspectral (or multispectral) target detection and classification. It requires a complete knowledge of the desired target signature in images. This work presents “Unsupervised CEM (UCEM),” a novel approach to automatically target detection and classification in multispectral magnetic resonance (MR) images. The UCEM involves two processes, namely, target generation process (TGP) and CEM. The TGP is a fuzzy-set process that generates a set of potential targets from unknown information and then applies these targets to be desired targets in CEM. Finally, two sets of images, namely, computer-generated phantom images and real MR images, are used in the experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of UCEM. Experimental results demonstrate that UCEM segments a multispectral MR image much more effectively than either Functional MRI of the Brain's (FMRIB's) automated segmentation tool or fuzzy C-means does. 相似文献

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the ability of T2 turbo spin echo (TSE) axial and sagittal BLADE sequences in reducing or even eliminating motion, pulsatile flow and cross-talk artifacts in lumbar spine MRI examinations. Forty four patients, who had routinely undergone a lumbar spine examination, participated in the study. The following pairs of sequences with and without BLADE were compared: a) T2 TSE Sagittal (SAG) in thirty two cases, and b) T2 TSE Axial (AX) also in thirty two cases. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed based on measurements in different normal anatomical structures and examination of seven characteristics, respectively. The qualitative analysis was performed by experienced radiologists. Also, the presence of image motion, pulsatile flow and cross-talk artifacts was evaluated. Based on the results of the qualitative analysis for the different sequences and anatomical structures, the BLADE sequences were found to be significantly superior to the conventional ones in all the cases. The BLADE sequences eliminated the motion artifacts in all the cases. In our results, it was found that in the examined sequences (sagittal and axial) the differences between the BLADE and conventional sequences regarding the elimination of motion, pulsatile flow and cross-talk artifacts were statistically significant. In all the comparisons, the T2 TSE BLADE sequences were significantly superior to the corresponding conventional sequences regarding the classification of their image quality. In conclusion, this technique appears to be capable of potentially eliminating motion, pulsatile flow and cross-talk artifacts in lumbar spine MR images and producing high quality images in collaborative and non-collaborative patients. 相似文献

The dual echo steady-state (DESS) sequence has been shown successful in achieving fast T2 mapping with good precision. Under-estimation of T2, however, becomes increasingly prominent as the flip angle decreases. In 3D DESS imaging, therefore, the derived T2 values would become a function of the slice location in the presence of non-ideal slice profile of the excitation RF pulse. Furthermore, the pattern of slice-dependent variation in T2 estimates is dependent on the RF pulse waveform. Multi-slice 2D DESS imaging provides better inter-slice consistency, but the signal intensity is subject to integrated effects of within-slice distribution of the actual flip angle. Consequently, T2 measured using 2D DESS is prone to inaccuracy even at the designated flip angle of 90°. In this study, both phantom and human experiments demonstrate the above phenomena in good agreement with model prediction. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze regional variations of magnetic resonance (MR) relaxation times (T1ρ and T2) in hip joint cartilage of healthy volunteers and subjects with femoral acetabular impingement (FAI). Morphological and quantitative images of the hip joints of 12 healthy volunteers and 9 FAI patients were obtained using a 3 T MR scanner. Both femoral and acetabular cartilage layers in each joint were semi-automatically segmented on sagittal 3D high-resolution spoiled gradient echo (SPGR) images. These segmented regions of interest (ROIs) were automatically divided radially into twelve equal sub-regions (300 intervals) based on the fitted center of the femur head. The mean value of T1ρ/T2 was calculated in each sub-region after superimposing the divided cartilage contours on the MR relaxation (T1ρ/T2) maps to quantify the relaxation times. T1ρ and T2 relaxation times of the femoral cartilage were significantly higher in FAI subjects compared to healthy controls (39.9 ± 3.3 msec in FAI vs. 35.4 ± 2.3 msec in controls for T1ρ (P = 0.0020); 33.9 ± 3.1 msec in FAI vs. 31.1 ± 1.7 msec in controls for T2 (P = 0.0160)). Sub-regional analysis showed significantly different T1ρ and T2 relaxation times in the anterior-superior region (R9) of the hip joint cartilage between subjects with FAI and healthy subjects, suggesting possible regional differences in cartilage matrix composition between these two groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that sub-regional analysis in femoral cartilage was more sensitive in discriminating FAI joint cartilage from that of healthy joints than global analysis of the whole region (T1ρ: area under the curve (AUC) = 0.981, P = 0.0001 for R9 sub-region; AUC = 0.901, P = 0.002 for whole region; T2: AUC = 0.976, P = 0.0005 for R9 sub-region; AUC = 0.808, P = 0.0124 for whole region). The results of this study demonstrated regional variations in hip cartilage composition using MR relaxation times (T1ρ and T2) and suggested that analysis based on local regions was more sensitive than global measures in subjects with and without FAI. 相似文献

The aim of this work was to assess the feasibility of photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and MR imaging for evaluating the cerebrovascular reserve capacity (CVRC) in animal models. Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats and spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR) were used for MRI. BALB/c mice were used for PAI. MR perfusion weighted imaging (PWI) was performed on a 1.5-T whole-body MR system before and after oral administration of acetazolamide (ACZ). The region of interest (ROI) was chosen in the bilateral frontal lobe for measuring regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) and mean transit time (MTT). The vessel diameters of the superficial layer of the cortex were measured by PAI in the resting and ACZ-activated mice. The results showed that there was a statistical difference between the resting and ACZ-activated animals in vessel diameter, rCBV and rCBF values. The increments in rCBV and rCBF of WKY rats between resting and ACZ test states were significantly higher than that of SHR. The pathological findings of small arterial walls and lumen of the brain were also different between WKY and SHR rats. The diameters of blood vessels in the superficial layer of the brain measured by PAI were enlarged after the ACZ tolerance test. This result was also observed in the MRI CBV map, where the signal of the vessel in the superficial layer of the cortex became redder after the ACZ stimulation, suggesting the increase of blood flow. It can be concluded that MR PWI and PAI combined with the ACZ test might be useful in evaluating the CVRC and revealing the pathologic changes in cerebral vessels. 相似文献

Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) assesses neurodegenerative structural changes in the cerebral anatomy of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients but cannot detect non-structural abnormalities; however, enhanced T2 star weighted angiography (ESWAN) can precisely indicate PD-related substantia nigra (SN) iron deposition. The differences in ESWAN-based parameters between different PD stages were assessed using midbrain iron deposits of 20 PD patients aged 64.3 ± 12.7 (41–85) years grouped by Hoehn and Yahr staging into minimal (stages ≤ 2.5) or moderate to severe (stages ≥ 3.0) motor impairment groups and 14 healthy control subjects. Conventional MRI and ESWAN measurements of mean phase value (MPV) and midbrain dimensions (width and diameter) revealed similar anatomical characteristics; however, ESWAN revealed the presence of smaller MPVs and SN pars compacta (SNc) (P < 0.01) and a negative correlation between reduction extent and motor impairment (P < 0.01). SNc width to midbrain diameter was reduced in moderate to severe impairment patients versus control and minimal impairment patients (both P < 0.01). A positive correlation was found between MPV and width or SNc width to midbrain diameter ratio (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively). Minimal impairment group mean MPV and substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) width evidenced no significant reduction, unlike significant reductions in the moderate to severe impairment group (P < 0.01). No significant changes were observed in MPV or width in the RN region (P > 0.05). ESWAN allows for early and accurate iron deposition determination in PD patients, particularly useful as a supplement to conventional MRI in early-stage PD patients. 相似文献

Bone fracture induces moderate inflammatory responses that are regulated by cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) or 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) for initiating tissue repair and bone formation. Only a handful of non-invasive techniques focus on monitoring acute inflammation of injured bone currently exists. In the current study, we monitored in vivo inflammation levels during the initial 2 weeks of the inflammatory stage after mouse bone fracture utilizing 50 MHz ultrasound. The acquired ultrasonic images were correlated well with histological examinations. After the bone fracture in the tibia, dynamic changes in the soft tissue at the medial-posterior compartment near the fracture site were monitored by ultrasound on the days of 0, 2, 4, 7, and 14. The corresponding echogenicity increased on the 2nd, 4th, and 7th day, and subsequently declined to basal levels after the 14th day. An increase of cell death was identified by the positive staining of deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL) assay and was consistent with ultrasound measurements. The increases of both COX-2 and Leukotriene B4 receptor 1 (BLT1, 5-LO-relative receptor), which are regulators for tissue inflammation, in the immunohistochemistry staining revealed their involvement in bone fracture injury. Monitoring the inflammatory response to various non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) treatments was investigated by treating injured mice with a daily oral intake of aspirin (Asp), indomethacin (IND), and a selective COX-2 inhibitor (SC-236). The Asp treatment significantly reduced fracture-increased echogenicity (hyperechogenicity, p < 0.05) in ultrasound images as well as inhibited cell death, and expression of COX-2 and BLT1. In contrast, treatment with IND or SC-236 did not reduce the hyperechogenicity, as confirmed by cell death (TUNEL) and expression levels of COX-2 or BLT1. Taken together, the current study reports the feasibility of a non-invasive ultrasound method capable of monitoring post-fracture tissue inflammation that positively correlates with histological findings. Results of this study also suggest that this approach may be further applied to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of inflammatory processes and to develop therapeutic strategies for facilitating fracture healing. 相似文献
