Recent theoretical calculations predicted an order-of-magnitude increase in the efficiency of terahertz pulse generation by optical rectification in lithium niobate when 500 fs long pump pulses are used, rather than the commonly used ~100 fs pulses. Even by using longer than optimal pump pulses of 1.3 ps duration, 2.5× higher THz pulse energy (125 μJ) was measured with 2.5× higher pump-to-THz energy conversion efficiency (0.25%) than reported previously with shorter pulses. These results verify the advantage of longer pump pulses and support the expectation that mJ-level THz pulses will be available by cooling the crystal and using large pumped area. 相似文献

We demonstrate the generation of radially polarized terahertz pulses via optical rectification in a Cherenkov geometry exploiting velocity mismatch, contrary to the traditional approach for generating linearly polarized terahertz beams. We describe the generation of subpicosecond electrical pulses by optical rectification of ultrashort optical pulses. The electrical pulses are generated by the second-order nonlinear response of a LiTaO(3) crystal bonded to a coplanar transmission line. A bipolar temporal waveform with a width of 875 fs was measured after a propagation distance of 175mum . This pulse width was limited by the response time of the photoconductive sampler. We observed both broadening and amplitude reduction in the temporal waveform owing to propagation. 相似文献

We report the generation of 30 microJ single-cycle terahertz pulses at 100 Hz repetition rate by phase-matched optical rectification in lithium niobate using 28 mJ femtosecond laser pulses. The phase-matching condition is achieved by tilting the laser pulse intensity front. Temporal, spectral, and propagation properties of the generated terahertz pulses are presented. In addition, we discuss possibilities for further increasing the energy of single-cycle terahertz pulses obtained by optical rectification. 相似文献

Percolation-enhanced generation of terahertz pulses by optical rectification on ultrathin gold films
Emission of pulses of electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz range is observed when ultrathin gold films on glass are illuminated with femtosecond near-IR laser pulses. A distinct maximum is observed in the emitted terahertz amplitude from films of average thickness just above the percolation threshold. Our measurements suggest that the emission is through a second-order nonlinear optical rectification process, enhanced by the excitation of localized surface plasmon hot spots on the percolated metal film. 相似文献

We demonstrate the possibility of an efficient generation of terahertz radiation under optical rectification in a uniaxial
crystal containing impurities with resonance two-level quantum transitions. The group velocity of an optical pulse entering
the regime of self-induced transparency decreases to the value of phase velocity of the terahertz radiation, which results
in phase matching of long- and short-wavelength waves. The terahertz generation is accompanied by strong self-modulation of
the optical pulse. Two-component soliton-like structures can be formed at long distances accompanied by spectral red shift

The generation of broadband terahertz radiation in quadratically nonlinear crystals containing additional resonant impurities
having a permanent dipole moment has been theoretically analyzed. It has been shown that the contributions to the intensity
of the generated radiation from resonance and nonresonance mechanisms of optical rectification are nonadditive. In semiconductor
nanostructures and systems of organic molecules, the energy efficiency of generation due to the resonance mechanism can reach
about 0.001, which is much higher than the corresponding efficiencies of the currently widespread tilted front technique.
The spectra of the input optical pulses exhibit a noticeable red shift due to the resonance-nonresonance rectification. 相似文献

We describe a new four-wave rectification method for the generation of intense, ultrafast terahertz (THz) pulses from gases. The fundamental and second-harmonic output of an amplified Ti:sapphire laser is focused to a peak intensity of ~5x10(14)W/cm (2) . Under these conditions, peak THz fields estimated at 2 kV/cm have been observed; the measured power spectrum peaks near 2 THz. Phase-dependent measurements show that this is a coherent process and is sensitive to the relative phases of the fundamental and second-harmonic pulses. Comparable THz signals have been observed from nitrogen and argon as well as from air. 相似文献

借助抽运-探测技术研究了ZnTe晶体中光学整流产生的太赫兹(THz)辐射,利用ZnTe晶体的线性电光效应探测THz辐射场分布,观察到了较窄(约为0.2 ps)的THz场分布及相应较宽(响应超过4 THz,半峰宽约为2.4 THz)的THz频谱,并运用琼斯矩阵对实验结果进行了理论拟合. 研究了飞秒激光脉冲波长(750—850 nm)、脉冲宽度(56—225 fs)和晶体旋转与THz辐射产生的关系. 同时改变探测光偏振方向进行偏振调制,并从理论上分析了偏振调制对THz辐射探测的影响.

Results are reported of experimental investigations of high-power photodissociation iodine laser pumped by lamps and by radiation from high-current electric discharges. Experimental results on the generation of terahertz (THz) electromagnetic radiation under ionization of air by femtosecond
pulses at fundamental and second-harmonic frequencies of a Ti-sapphire laser are presented. The mean power of the generated
THz radiation as a function of the time delay between two pulses of different frequencies is found to be quasi-periodical.
Theoretically, we show that efficient generation of THz radiation is governed by the inertial part of the nonlinear response

A compact, high-power emitter of half-cycle terahertz (THz) radiation is demonstrated. The device consists of an epitaxial InAs emitter upon a GaAs prism and produces THz pulses that are 20 times more powerful than those from conventional planar InAs emitters. Emission of terahertz (THz) radiation as a result of optical rectification of intense femtosecond laser pulses on thin gold films has been studied by time-domain THz spectroscopy. The THz amplitude was measured as a function of film thickness and incidence angle. The experiments reveal that the emitted THz field is suppressed for a thickness below 100 nm, which gives evidence of the nonlocal character of the response. The variation of incidence angle allows us to estimate the components of susceptibility tensor chi2ijk. For thicker films and near grazing incidence, the emitted THz field attains a peak value of 4 kV/cm. 相似文献

The generation of neutron pulses with a duration of 1–100 ns using small vacuum accelerating tubes is considered. Two physical models of acceleration of short deuteron bunches in pulse neutron generators are described. The dependences of an instantaneous neutron flux in accelerating tubes on the parameters of pulse neutron generators are obtained using computer simulation. The results of experimental investigation of short-pulse neutron generators based on the accelerating tube with a vacuum-arc deuteron source, connected in the circuit with a discharge peaker, and an accelerating tube with a laser deuteron source, connected according to the Arkad’ev-Marx circuit, are given. In the experiments, the neutron yield per pulse reached 107 for a pulse duration of 10–100 ns. The resultant experimental data are in satisfactory agreement with the results of computer simulation. 相似文献
