Low temperature (77-90 K) measurements of absorption spectral changes induced by red light illumination in isolated photosystem II (PSII) reaction centers (RCs, D1/D2/Cyt b559 complex) with different external acceptors and in PSII core complexes have shown that two different electron donors can alternatively function in PSII: chlorophyll (Chl) dimer P(680) absorbing at 684 nm and Chl monomer Chl(D1) absorbing at 674 nm. Under physiological conditions (278 K) transient absorption difference spectroscopy with 20-fs resolution was applied to study primary charge separation in spinach PSII core complexes excited at 710 nm. It was shown that the initial electron transfer reaction takes place with a time constant of ~0.9 ps. This kinetics was ascribed to charge separation between P(680)* and Chl(D1) absorbing at 670 nm accompanied by the formation of the primary charge-separated state P(680)(+)Chl(DI)(-), as indicated by 0.9-ps transient bleaching at 670 nm. The subsequent electron transfer from Chl(D1)(-) occurred within 13-14 ps and was accompanied by relaxation of the 670-nm band, bleaching of the Pheo(D1) Q(x) absorption band at 545 nm, and development of the anion-radical band of Pheo(D1)(-) at 450-460 nm, the latter two attributable to formation of the secondary radical pair P(680)(+)Pheo(D1)(-). The 14-ps relaxation of the 670-nm band was previously assigned to the Chl(D1) absorption in isolated PSII RCs [Shelaev, Gostev, Nadtochenko, Shkuropatov, Zabelin, Mamedov, Semenov, Sarkisov and Shuvalov, Photosynth. Res. 98 (2008) 95-103]. We suggest that the longer wavelength position of P(680) (near 680 nm) as a primary electron donor and the shorter wavelength position of Chl(D1) (near 670 nm) as a primary acceptor within the Q(y) transitions in RC allow an effective competition with an energy transfer and stabilization of separated charges. Although an alternative mechanism of charge separation with Chl(D1)* as the primary electron donor and Pheo(D1) as the primary acceptor cannot be ruled out, the 20-fs excitation at the far-red tail of the PSII core complex absorption spectrum at 710 nm appears to induce a transition to a low-energy state P(680)* with charge-transfer character (probably P(D1)(δ+)P(D2)(δ-)) which results in an effective electron transfer from P(680)* (the primary electron donor) to Chl(D1) as the intermediary acceptor.  相似文献

Methyl bacteriopyropheophorbide-a derivatives having a series of substituents at the C3 position were prepared and their optical properties were compared with the corresponding chlorin analogues. Two kinds of oxidation reaction (C3-vinyl --> formyl --> carboxy group) were found to be applicable with a little alteration of the free-base bacteriochlorin macrocycles. The Qx and Qy electronic absorption peak positions of synthetic bacteriochlorins in CH2Cl2 were affected by the C3 substituents and found to be more sensitive than those of the chlorins. The observed Qx/Qy peaks in their monomeric states were shifted to a longer wavelength in the order of 1-hydroxyethyl < hydroxymethyl < acetoxymethyl < vinyl < acetyl < carboxy < formyl < 2,2-dicyanoethynyl group. Zinc complex with the C3-hydroxymethyl group formed self-aggregates in a nonpolar organic solvent, which showed the largest red-shift of the Qy band (2380 cm(-1), 726 nm in THF to 878 nm in 1% THF-cyclohexane) among those of the synthetic self-aggregative (bacterio)chlorins examined.  相似文献

The electroabsorption (EA) spectra of directly meso-meso-linked porphyrin arrays (Zn, n = 1-3) have been investigated by means of the sum-over-states (SOS) approach at the INDO/S-SCI level theory. The experimental EA spectra of Zn (n > or = 2) exhibit an unusual second-derivative line shape at the exciton split low-energy B(x) band in contrast to the first-derivative spectrum of Z1, which is readily ascribed to a quadratic Stark shift of the B (Soret) band. Although the second-derivative line shape is usually attributed to a difference in the permanent dipole moment (Deltamu) between the ground and excited states, it should be vanishing for Zn due to their essentially D(2)(d) or D(2)(h) symmetry. As pointed out in our previous studies, the interporphyrinic charge-transfer (CT) excited states are accidentally overlapping with the excitonic B bands and the present calculations reveal that the B(x) state is strongly coupled via a transition dipole moment with two such CT states. These situations give rise to a quadratic Stark effect on the B(x) band that is intermediate between Stark shift (first derivative) and Stark broadening (second derivative), and play a central role in establishing the anomalous second derivative nature of the EA spectrum. Moreover, based on the comparison between the theoretical and experimental spectra, there must be an additional factor that further enhances the second derivative nature of the EA spectrum of porphyrin arrays. Discussions on this issue including the preliminary investigations on the role of solvent (PMMA)-induced asymmetry are also presented.  相似文献

To study organization of the main light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-protein complex of photosystem II (LHCII) from spinach thylakoid membranes at the level of trimeric subcomplexes, we have applied non-denaturing isoelectric focusing (ndIEF) in vertical, slab polyacrylamide gels. When analyzed by two consecutive ndIEF/electroelution runs, spinach BBY membrane preparations (PSII(alpha)-enriched, stacked thylakoid membranes) were resolved into nine fractions of 100% purity, labelled 1-9 in order of decreasing pI values. Seven of these fractions (3-9) were shown by absorption spectroscopy to stand for LHCII subcomplexes. The subcomplexes were established - by monitoring their circular dichroism spectra and comparing them to the spectra of native LHCII trimers and monomers - to be structurally intact trimers. The analysis of polypeptide composition of the subcomplexes in terms of apparent molecular masses and Lhcb genes' products led us to the conclusion that each of the subcomplexes might be a mixed population of closely similar individual trimers, comprising of permutations of Lhcb1 and Lhcb2 (subcomplexes 3-7) or Lhcb1, Lhcb2 and Lhcb3 (subcomplexes 8 and 9).  相似文献

Well-resolved vibrational spectra of LH2 complex isolated from two photosynthetic bacteria, Rhodobacter sphaeroides and Ectothiorhodospira sp., were obtained using surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) exciting into the Qx and the Qy transitions of bacteriochlorophyll a. High-quality SERRS spectra in the Qy region were accessible because the strong fluorescence background was quenched near the roughened Ag surface. A comparison of the spectra obtained with 590 nm and 752 nm excitation in the mid- and low-frequency regions revealed spectral differences between the two LH2 complexes as well as between the LH2 complexes and isolated bacteriochlorophyll a. Because peripheral modes of pigments contribute mainly to the low-frequency spectral region, frequencies and intensities of many vibrational bands in this region are affected by interactions with the protein. The results demonstrate that the microenvironment surrounding the pigments within the two LH2 complexes is somewhat different, despite the fact that the complexes exhibit similar electronic absorption spectra. These differences are most probably due to specific pigment-pigment and pigment-protein interactions within the LH2 complexes, and the approach might be useful for addressing subtle static and dynamic structural variances between pigment-protein complexes from different sources or in complexes altered chemically or genetically.  相似文献

Reconstitutions of the LH1 complexes from the purple photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum S1 were performed with a range of carotenoid molecules having different numbers of C=C conjugated double bonds. Since, as we showed previously, some of the added carotenoids tended to aggregate and then to remain with the reconstituted LH1 complexes (Nakagawa, K.; Suzuki, S.; Fujii, R.; Gardiner, A.T.; Cogdell, R.J.; Nango, M.; Hashimoto, H. Photosynth. Res. 2008, 95, 339-344), a further purification step using a sucrose density gradient centrifugation was introduced to improve purity of the final reconstituted sample. The measured absorption, fluorescence-excitation, and Stark spectra of the LH1 complex reconstituted with spirilloxanthin were identical with those obtained with the native, spirilloxanthin-containing, LH1 complex of Rs. rubrum S1. This shows that the electrostatic environments surrounding the carotenoid and bacteriochlorophyll a (BChl a) molecules in both of these LH1 complexes were essentially the same. In the LH1 complexes reconstituted with either rhodopin or spheroidene, however, the wavelength maximum at the BChl a Qy absorption band was slightly different to that of the native LH1 complexes. These differences in the transition energy of the BChl a Qy absorption band can be explained using the values of the nonlinear optical parameters of this absorption band, i.e., the polarizability change Tr(Deltaalpha) and the static dipole-moment change |Deltamu| upon photoexcitation, as determined using Stark spectroscopy. The local electric field around the BChl a in the native LH1 complex (ES) was determined to be approximately 3.0x10(6) V/cm. Furthermore, on the basis of the values of the nonlinear optical parameters of the carotenoids in the reconstituted LH1 complexes, it is possible to suggest that the conformations of carotenoids, anhydrorhodovibrin and spheroidene, in the LH1 complex were similar to that of rhodopin glucoside in crystal structure of the LH2 complex from Rhodopseudomonas acidophila 10050.  相似文献

Abstract— The CD spectra of a range of antenna complexes from several different species of purple photosynthetic bacteria were recorded in the wavelength range of 190 to 930 nm. Analysis of the far UV CD (190 to 250 nm) showed that in each case except for the B800-850 from Chr. vinosum the secondary structure of the light-harvesting complexes contains a large amount of α-helix (?50%) and very little 0-pleated sheet. This confirms the predictions of the group of Zuber of a high a-helical content based upon consideration of the primary structures of several antenna apoproteins. The CD spectra from the carotenoids and the bacteriochlorophylls show considerable variations depending upon the type of antenna complex. The different amplitude ratios in the CD spectrum for the bacteriochlorophyll Qy, Qx and Soret bands indicate not only different degrees of exciton coupling, but also a strong and variable hyperchromism (Scherz and Parson, 1984a, b).  相似文献

Electroabsorption (EA) spectra were recorded in the region of the reaction center (RC) Qy absorption bands of bacteriochlorophyll (Bchl) and bacteriopheophytin, to investigate the effect of carotenoid (Car) on the electrostatic environment of the RCs of the purple bacterium Rhodobacter (Rb.) sphaeroides. Two different RCs were prepared from Rb. sphaeroides strain R26.1 (R26.1-RC); R26.1 RC lacking Car and a reconstituted RC (R26.1-RC+ Car) prepared by incorporating a synthetic Car (3,4-dihydrospheroidene). Although there were no detectable differences between these two RCs in their near infrared (NIR) absorption spectra at 79 and 293 K, or in their EA spectra at 79 K, significant differences were detected in their EA spectra at 293 K. Three nonlinear optical parameters of each RC were determined in order to evaluate quantitatively these differences; transition dipole-moment polarizability and hyperpolarizability (D factor), the change in polarizability upon photoexcitation (Deltaalpha), and the change in dipole-moment upon photoexcitation (Deltamu). The value of D or Deltaalpha determined for each absorption band of the two RC samples showed similar values at 77 or 293 K. However, the Deltamu values of the special pair Bchls (P) and the monomer Bchls absorption bands showed significant differences between the two RCs at 293 K. X-ray crystallography of the two RCs has revealed that a single molecule of the solubilizing detergent LDAO occupies part of the carotenoid binding site in the absence of a carotenoid. The difference in the value of Deltamu therefore represents the differential effect of the detergent LDAO and the carotenoid on P. The change of electrostatic field around P induced by the presence of Car was determined to be 1.7 x 10(5) [V/cm], corresponding to a approximately 10% change in the electrostatic field around P.  相似文献

It was studied by spectroscopy that PSII reaction center complex consisting of three polypeptides, D1, D2 and Cytb559, were purified from PSII particle of CeCl3 treated spinach. The results of the experiment show that Ce3+ could improve the growth of spinach, and accelerate electron transport of PSII particles. Of chl-a of UV-Vis spectrum of D1/D2/Cytb559 complex, Soret band was blue-shifted by 3 nm and Q band by 2 nm, respectively, and the fluorescence emission peak was blue-shifted by 5 nm in CeCl3-treated spinach compared with the one in control. By the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy methods, it has been found that Ce3+ is coordinated with 8 nitrogen atoms in the first coordination shell with Ce-N bond length of 0.253 nm, and Ce3+ with 6 oxygen atoms in the second coordination shell with Ce-O bond length of 0.32 nm. However, the secondary structure of D1/D2/Cytb559 complex by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy has no significant change after CeCl3 treated. It might be that Ce3+ binds to porphyrin rings of chlorophyll and oxygen of amino acid residue of polypeptide in D1/D2/Cytb559 complex, and then accelerates the primary reaction of PSII, intensifies function of P680+ primary electron donor of D1/D2/Cytb559, but there is little change in conformation of PSII reaction center complex.  相似文献

The relaxation dynamics of unsubstituted porphyrin (H2P), diprotonated porphyrin (H4P2+), and tetraoxaporphyrin dication (TOxP2+) has been investigated in the femtosecond-nanosecond time domain upon photoexcitation in the Soret band with pulses of femtosecond duration. By probing with spectrally broad femtosecond pulses, we have observed transient absorption spectra at delay times up to 1.5 ns. The kinetic profiles corresponding with the band maxima due to excited-state absorption have been determined for the three species. Four components of the relaxation process are distinguished for H2P: the unresolvably short B --> Qy internal conversion is followed by the Qy --> Qx process, vibrational relaxation, and thermalization in the Qx state with time constant approximately 150 fs, 1.8 ps, and 24.9 ps, respectively. Going from H2P to TOxP2+, two processes are resolved, i.e., B --> Q internal conversion and thermal equilibration in the Q state. The B --> Q time constant has been determined to be 25 ps. The large difference with respect to the B --> Qy time constant of H2P has been related to the increased energy gap between the coupled states, 9370 cm-1 in TOxP2+ vs 6100 cm-1 in H2P. The relaxation dynamics of H4P2+ has a first ultrafast component of approximately 300 fs assigned as internal conversion between the B (or Soret) state and charge-transfer (CT) states of the H4P2+ complex with two trifluoroacetate counterions. This process is followed by internal CT --> Q conversion (time constant 9 ps) and thermalization in the Q state (time constant 22 ps).  相似文献

Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy was applied for the first time to detect the structural changes upon photoreactions of redox cofactors in photosystem II (PSII). The PSII-enriched membranes from spinach were adsorbed on the surface of a silicon prism, and FTIR measurements of various redox cofactors were performed for the same sample but under different conditions by exchanging buffers in a flow cell. Light-induced FTIR difference spectra upon redox reactions of the oxygen-evolving Mn cluster, the primary quinone electron acceptor QA, the redox-active tyrosine YD, the primary electron acceptor pheophytin, and the primary electron donor chlorophyll P680 were successively recorded in buffers including different redox reagents and inhibitors. All of these cofactors remained active in the PSII membranes on the silicon surface, and the resultant spectra were basically identical to those previously recorded by the conventional transmission method. These ATR-FTIR measurements enable accurate comparison between reactions of different active sites in a single PSII sample. The present results demonstrated that the ATR-FTIR spectroscopy is a useful technique for investigation of the reaction mechanism of PSII.  相似文献

The effect of LaCl3 on the K3Fe(CN)6 (FeCy) reduction rate and the oxygen-evolving rate of PSU particles of spinach, and the spectral characterization of the D1/D2/Cytb559 of a PSII reaction center complex consisting of three polypeptides from spinach were studied. The experimental results showed that LaCl3 could significantly accelerate the transformation from light energy to electric energy, the electron transport, water photolysis and oxygen evolution of PSII of spinach, which was related to the spectral characterization of the D1/D2/Cytb559 complex.Soret band and Q band of Chl-a of UV-vis spectrum of D1/D2/Cytb559 complex were blue shifted, and the fluorescence emission peak was blue shifted in LaCl3 treated spinach compared with that in the control. The EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy) revealed that La^3 was coordinated with 8 nitrogen or oxygen atoms in the first coordination shell with La-N or La-O bond length of 0.254 nm, and with 6 nitrogen or oxygen atoms in the second coordination shell with La-N or La-O bond length of 0.321 nm in the D1/D2/Cytb559 complex. The CD suggested that the secondary structure of D1/D2/Cytb559 complex have been litfie affected by the treatment of LaCl3.  相似文献

Multichannel flash spectroscopy (with microsecond time resolution) has been applied to carotenoid (Car)-containing and Car-less reaction centers (RC) of Rhodobacter sphaeroides with a view to investigate the interaction between the Car and its neighboring pigments at room temperature. Under neutral redox potential conditions, where the primary quinone acceptor (QA) is oxidized, the light-induced spectral changes in the 350-1000 nm region are attributed to the photochemical oxidation of the special pair (denoted here as P870), the generation of P870(+)QA(-), and the attendant electrochromism of adjacent chromophores. A bathochromic shift of <1 nm in the visible absorption region of Car reveals the sensitivity of Car to the P870 photooxidation. Under low redox potential conditions, where QA is reduced, P870 triplets (P870(+)) are formed. The time-resolved triplet-minus-singlet (TmS) spectrum of Car-less RC shows a deep bleaching at 870 nm, which belongs to P870(+), and additional (but smaller) bleaching at 800 nm; the entire spectrum decays at the same rate (with a lifetime of about 50 micros). The bleaching at 800 nm arises from the pigment interaction between P870(+) and the accessory bacteriochlorophylls on A and B branches (BA,B). In Car-containing RC, the TmS spectra of Car are accompanied by two smaller, negative signals--a sharp peak at 809 +/- 2 nm and a broad band at 870 nm--which decay at the same rate as the TmS spectrum of Car (ca 10 micros). The former is ascribed to the perturbation, by Car(+), of the absorption spectrum of BB; the latter, to the TmS spectrum of P870(+), a species that appears to be in approximate thermal equilibrium with Car(+). These assignments are consistent with the absorption-detected magnetic resonance spectra obtained by other workers at low temperatures.  相似文献

Action of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the isolated D1 protein, a key component of Photosystem II (PSII) complex, was studied and compared with the effect of high irradiance on this protein in mildly solubilized photosynthetic membranes and cells of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis. Whereas singlet oxygen caused mainly protein modification reflected by shift of its electrophoretic mobility, action of hydrogen peroxide and superoxide resulted in generation of specific fragments. Hydroxyl radicals as the most ROS induced fast disappearance of the protein. The results substantiate the ability of ROS to cause direct scission of the D1 peptide bonds. Similar D1 modification, fragmentation and additionally cross-linking with other PSII subunits were observed during illumination or hydrogen peroxide treatment of mildly solubilized thylakoids. Peroxide-induced fragmentation did not occur in thylakoids of the strain lacking a ligand to the nonheme iron, confirming the role of this prosthetic group in the D1-specific cleavage. The D1 modification, fragmentation and cross-linking were suppressed by ROS scavengers, supporting the direct role of ROS in these phenomena. Identical symptoms of the ROS-induced D1 damage were detected in illuminated cells of Synechocystis mutants with a higher probability of ROS formation, documenting the relevance of the in vitro results for the situation in vivo.  相似文献

Peridinin, the carotenoid in the peridinin chlorophyll a protein (PCP), was studied by Stark (electroabsorption) spectroscopy to determine the change in electrostatic properties produced on excitation within the absorption band, in methyl tetrahydrofuran (MeTHF) versus ethylene glycol (EG), at 77 K. Strikingly, a large change in the permanent dipole moment (|Deltamu|) was found between the ground state, S(0) (1(1)A(g)(-)), and the Franck-Condon region of the S(2) (1(1)B(u)(+)) excited state, in both MeTHF (22 D) and EG (approximately 27 D), thus revealing the previously unknown charge transfer (CT) character of this pi-pi transition in peridinin. Such a large |Deltamu| produced on excitation, we suggest, facilitates the bending of the lactone moiety, toward which charge transfer occurs, and the subsequent formation of the previously identified intramolecular CT (ICT) state at lower energy. This unexpectedly large S(2) dipole moment, which has not been predicted even from high-level electronic structure calculations, is supported by calculating the shift of the peridinin absorption band as a function of solvent polarity, using the experimentally derived result. Overall, the photoinduced charge transfer uncovered here is expected to affect the excited-state reactivity of peridinin and, within the protein, be important for efficient energy transfer from the carotenoid S(2) and S(1)/ICT states to the chlorophylls in PCP.  相似文献

A comparison of the triplet-minus-singlet (TmS) absorption spectrum of spinach chloroplasts, recorded some thirty years ago, with the more recently published TmS spectrum of isolated Chla/b LHCII (light-harvesting complexes associated with photosystem II of higher plants) shows that the two spectra are very similar, which is to be expected, since only the carotenoid pigments contribute to each spectrum. Be that as it may, the comparison also reveals a dissimilarity: photoexcitation of the sample does, or does not, affect the absorbance in the Qy region (650-700 nm), depending on whether the sample is a suspension of chloroplasts or of isolated LHCII. The Qy-signal in the TmS spectrum of LHCII decays, it should be noted, at the same rate as the rest of the difference spectrum, and its most prominent feature is a negative peak. As the carotenoids do not absorb in the Qy region, the presence of a signal in this region calls for an explanation: van der Vos, Carbonera and Hoff, the first to find as well as fathom the phenomenon, attributed the Qy-signal to a change, in the absorption spectrum of a chlorophyll a (Chla) molecule, brought about by the presence of triplet excitation on a neighbouring carotenoid (Car). The difference in the behaviours of chloroplasts and LHCII, if reproducible, would imply that the Car triplets which give rise to the TmS spectrum of chloroplasts do not influence the absorption spectra of their Chla neighbours. With a view to reaching a firm conclusion about this vexed issue, spinach chloroplasts and thylakoids have been examined with the aid of the same kinetic spectrometer as that used for investigating LHCII; the TmS spectra of both chloroplasts and thylakoids contain prominent bleaching signals centred at 680 nm, and the triplet decay time in each case is comparable to that of the Chla/b LHCII triplets. Results pertaining to other closely related systems are recalled, and it is concluded that, so far as the overall appearance of the TmS spectrum is concerned, spinach chloroplasts are by no means abnormal.  相似文献

The optical absorption spectra and redox properties are presented for 24 synthetic zinc chlorins and 18 free base analogs bearing a variety of 3,13 (beta) and 5,10,15 (meso) substituents. Results are also given for a zinc and free base oxophorbine, which contain the keto-bearing isocyclic ring present in the natural photosynthetic pigments such as chlorophyll a. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to probe the effects of the types and positions of substituents on the characteristics (energies, electron distributions) of the frontier molecular orbitals. A general finding is that the 3,13 positions are more sensitive to the effects of auxochromes than the 5,10,15 positions. The auxochromes investigated (acetyl>ethynyl>vinyl>aryl) cause a significant redshift and intensification of the Qy band upon placement at the 3,13 positions, whereas groups at the 5,10,15 positions result in much smaller redshifts that are accompanied by a decrease in relative Qy intensity. In addition, the substituent-induced shifts in first oxidation and reduction potentials faithfully track the energies of the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (HOMO and LUMO), respectively. The calculations show that the LUMO is shifted more by substituents than the HOMO, which derives from the differences in the electron densities of the two orbitals at the substituent sites. The trends in the substituent-induced effects on the wavelengths and relative intensities of the major features (By, Bx, Qx, Qy) in the near-UV to near-IR absorption bands are well accounted for using Gouterman's four-orbital model, which incorporates the effects of the substituents on the HOMO-1 and LUMO+1 in addition to the HOMO and LUMO. Collectively, the results and analysis presented herein and in the companion paper provide insights into the effects of substituents on the optical absorption, redox and other photophysical properties of the chlorins. These insights form a framework that underpins the rational design of chlorins for applications encompassing photomedicine and solar-energy conversion.  相似文献

Four new complex salts trans[RuIICl(pdma)2LA][PF6]n [pdma = 1,2-phenylenebis(dimethylarsine); LA = 1,4-bis[E-2-(4-pyridyl)ethenyl]benzene (bpvb), n = 1, 1; LA = N-methyl-1,4-bis(E-2-(4-pyridyl)ethenyl)benzene (Mebpvb+), n = 2, 2; LA = N-phenyl-1,4-bis(E-2-(4-pyridyl)ethenyl)benzene (Phbpvb+), n = 2, 3; LA = N-(2-pyrimidyl)-1,4-bis(E-2-(4-pyridyl)ethenyl)benzene (Pymbpvb+), n = 2, 4] have been prepared. The electronic absorption spectra of 1-4 display intense, visible metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) bands, with lambda(max) values in the range 432-474 nm in acetonitrile. Intense intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) bands due to LA are also observed, with lambda(max) values in the range 350-416 nm. Cyclic voltammetric studies in acetonitrile reveal reversible RuIII/II waves with E(1/2) values of ca. 1.05 V vs Ag/AgCl, together with LA-based reduction processes that are irreversible with the exception of 1. Salts 1-4 have been investigated by using Stark (electroabsorption) spectroscopy in butyronitrile glasses at 77 K. These studies have afforded dipole moment changes, Deltamu12, for the MLCT and ILCT transitions which have been used to calculate molecular static first hyperpolarizabilities, Beta0, according to the two-state equation Beta0 = 3Deltamu12(mu12)2/(Emax)2 (mu12 = transition dipole moment, Emax = MLCT/ILCT energy). In contrast with related RuII ammine complexes, replacement of a central E-ethylene bond with a 1,4-phenylene unit does not appear to be an especially effective strategy for combating the NLO transparency-efficiency tradeoff in these pdma complexes. Single-crystal X-ray studies with the complex salts 2 and 3 and also with the pro-ligand salt [Phbpvb+] PF6.0.5HPF6 show that these materials all adopt centrosymmetric packing structures.  相似文献
