Planar optical waveguides consisting of thin dielectric films and buffer layers with metal cladding have been investigated theoretically. A computer program was written to calculate the exact zeroes of complex eigenvalue equation for TE and TM modes in multilayer metal clad waveguide polarizer. Numerical results and illustrations are given for Polycarbonate waveguide with other polymers as buffer and Al, Ag and Au as cladding metals at . It is also shown that, using thin (finite) films of metal produce more efficient polarizers as compared to semi-infinite metal films. Effect of low index buffer layer on attenuation of TM/TE modes is also investigated.  相似文献

An analysis is given on the finite element method (FEM) for calculating the various parameters of optical modulators and a computer program is written to solve the finite element equation. Based on this method, a Mach-Zehnder type electro-optic modulator with coplanar waveguide (CPW) electrode is designed and fabricated. When compared with the Fourier series method, small differences on the 3-dB bandwidth, characteristic impedance and half-wave voltage, etc. are obtained.  相似文献

In view of applications of SiOxNy thin films in MOEMS technology, a study of the optomechanical characteristics of the PECVD deposited material are investigated. To optimize the quality of SiOxNy layers we establish the relationship between the chemical properties, optical performances, micromechanical stress, and growth parameters of deposited films. To use the SiOxNy thin film for the core layer of a strip-loaded waveguide, we propose preparation conditions of SiOxNy that offer a low-loss optical waveguide with well-controlled refractive index, based on a low-internal stress multilayer structure.  相似文献

We investigate characteristics of gold metal strip waveguides based on long range surface plasmon polaritons (LRSPPs) along thin metal strips embedded in a polymer for practical applications at the telecommunication wavelengths of 1.31 and 1.55 μm. Guiding properties of the gold strip waveguides are theoretically and experimentally evaluated with the limited thickness and width up to ∼20 nm and ∼10 μm, respectively. The lowest propagation loss of ∼1.4 dB/cm is obtained with a 14.5-nm-thick and 2-μm-wide gold strip at 1.55 μm. With a single-mode fiber, the lowest coupling loss of ∼0.4 dB/facet is achieved with a 14.5-nm-thick and 5-μm-wide gold strip at 1.55 μm. The lowest insertion losses are obtained 8-9 dB with 1.5 cm-long gold strips of a limited thickness and width at both the wavelengths. We demonstrate a 10 Gbps optical signal transmission via the LRSPP waveguide with a 14 nm-thick, 2.5 μm-wide, and 4 cm-long gold strip. These LRSPP waveguides have potential applications for optical interconnects and communications.  相似文献

A numerical study is carried out to compare the two-dimensional (2-D) case and three-dimensional (3-D) case for the modelling of an ion-exchanged glass waveguide. It is shown that different waveguide widths on the photomask correspond to different ion concentration distributions after an annealing process. A numerical example is presented of two waveguide sections with different widths indicates that due to the abrupt change of the waveguide width, a 3-D theoretical model is required for an accurate prediction of the parameters of ion-exchanged glass waveguides. The good agreement between the modelled and measured results proves that the developed 3-D numerical model can be beneficially utilized in the generalized design of optical devices based on ion-exchange waveguides.  相似文献

A novel second-order polarization-independent filter made of a single ring resonator and a Sagnac interferometer (SRRSI) is proposed, and its filtering characteristics are investigated. By using birefringence in waveguide, a single ring resonator can be used to synthesize a filter with second-order response. Analytical formulas are derived for characteristics of the SRRSI varied with waveguide parameters, such as the coupling coefficient; and the critical condition of a second-order Butterworth filter is given. The influence of loss in the ring resonator is also analyzed.  相似文献

The role of cladding bilayer material compositions to obtain low-loss hollow-core integrated optical waveguides was studied. Using the simple Fresnel reflection formulae, the optimal material composition was determined. It is shown that using bilayers with higher index-contrast does not always lead to a lower loss for (quasi-)linearly polarized modes. Based on that knowledge, structures that exhibit very low leakage loss for quasi-TE00 mode are proposed and designed using Si-compatible materials.  相似文献

We investigate the properties of waveguides induced by one-dimensional grey screening solitons in biased photorefractive crystals. The results show that waveguides induced by grey screening solitons are always of single mode for all intensity ratios, i.e. the ratios between the peak intensity of the soliton and the dark irradiance. Our analysis indicates that the energy confined near the centre of the grey soliton and the propagation constant of the guided mode of the waveguide induced by the grey screening soliton increase monotonically with intensity ratio increasing. On the other hand, when the soliton greyness increases, the energy confined near the centre of the grey soliton and the propagation constant of the guided mode of the waveguide induced by the grey screening soliton decrease monotonically. Relevant examples are provided where photorefractive crystal is of the strontium barium niobate type.  相似文献

This paper shows that waveguides induced by grey screening-photovoltaic solitons are always single mode for all intensity ratios, which are the ratio between the peak intensity of the soliton and the dark irradiance. It finds that the confined energy near the centre of the grey soliton and the propagation constant of the guided mode increase monotonically with increasing intensity ratio. When the bulk photovoltaic effect is neglected for short circuits, these waveguides become waveguides induced by grey screening solitons. Since the first report on the use of porous silicon as an optical waveguide medium in 1995, significant development has been made towards the understanding and applicability of such material. Here, the introduction of solvents (acetone, methanol, and propan-2-ol) into the pores is shown to dramatically reduce the loss of the waveguides, in a reversible manner. Both the magnitude and duration of this effect are sensitive to the solvent introduced. In some waveguides, for example, the measured loss (at 0.633 μm) falls by as much as 34 dB cm−1 on the introduction of acetone. Theoretical estimates of the effect of solvents on the interfacial scattering loss confirm this as the origin of the observed reductions. These results, combined with the fact that a substantial portion of the guided-mode field interacts with the solvent, indicate an enhanced sensitivity for sensor applications may be achievable.  相似文献

Semi-elliptical dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguide (DLSPPW) is proposed. The mode effective index, field confinement, and propagation length of the fundamental mode supported by it are calculated at the telecom wavelength λ = 1.55 μm for different dimensions of a polymer ridge (with the refractive index of 1.535) placed on a gold film surface. The waveguide structure is found to exhibit 23% increase of the propagation length while showing similar confinement as compared to conventional rectangular DLSPPW when ridge thickness t < 450 nm (ridge width w = 600 nm) and ridge width w < 320 nm (ridge thickness t = 600 nm).  相似文献

We present a design of a dual-core leaky waveguide that can be used as an integrated-optic polarizer. The proposed polarizer works on the principle of mode filtering. The structure is characterized by two cores, namely core-1 and core-2 and a high index layer in the upper-most region, such a structure supports leaky modes. The leakage losses of the modes have been calculated by using the transfer matrix method (TMM). Single polarization operation is ensured by high differential leakage loss between fundamental TE and TM modes. We show TE-pass operation with 0.5 dB/mm loss in TE0 mode and 13 dB/mm loss in TM0 mode, and TM-pass operation with 0.36 dB/mm loss in TM0 mode and 7.45 dB/mm loss in TE0 mode. Besides single-polarization operation, single-mode operation of the structure is ensured by high leakage loss of all the other higher-order modes.  相似文献
