In this work, we report optomechanical coupling, resolved sidebands and phonon lasing in a solid‐core microbottle resonator fabricated on a single mode optical fiber. Mechanical modes with quality factors (Qm) as high as 1.57 × 104 and 1.45 × 104 were observed, respectively, at the mechanical frequencies and . The maximum  Hz is close to the theoretical lower bound of 6 × 1012 Hz needed to overcome thermal decoherence for resolved‐sideband cooling of mechanical motion at room temperature, suggesting microbottle resonators as a possible platform for this endeavor. In addition to optomechanical effects, scatter‐induced mode splitting and ringing phenomena, which are typical for high‐quality optical resonances, were also observed in a microbottle resonator.

The terahertz (THz) radiation from InGaN/GaN dot‐in‐a‐wire nanostructures has been investigated. A submicrowatt THz signal is generated with just ten vertically stacked InGaN quantum dots (QDs) in each GaN nanowire. Based on the experimental results and analysis, a single quantum wire is expected to generate an output power as high as 10 pW, corresponding to 1 pW per dot. These structures are among the most efficient three‐dimensional quantum‐confined nanostructures for the THz emission. By applying a reverse bias along the wires in a light‐emitting device (LED) consisting of such nanostructures, the THz output power is increased more than fourfold. Based on THz and photoluminescence (PL) experiments, the mechanism for the THz emission is attributed to dipole radiation induced by internal electric fields and enhanced by external fields.

In recent years laser light has been used to control the motion of electron waves. Electrons can now be diffracted by standing waves of light. Laser light in the vicinity of nanostructures is used to affect free electrons, for example, femto‐second and atto‐second laser‐induced electrons are emitted from nanotips delivering coherent fast electron sources. Optical control of dispersion of the emitted electron waves, and optically controlled femto‐second switches for ultrafast electron detection are proposed. The first steps towards electron accelerators and matter optics on‐a‐chip are now being taken. New research fields are driven by these new technologies. One example is the optical generation of electron pulses on‐demand and quantum degenerate pulses. Another is the emerging development of interaction free electron microscopy. This review will focus on the field of free electron quantum optics with technologies at the interplay of lasers, electron matter waves, and nanostructures. Questions that motivate their development will also be addressed.

High efficiency, broad bandwidth, and robust angular tolerance are key considerations in photonic device design. Here, a few‐layer, asymmetric light transmitting metasurface that simultaneously satisfies all the above requirements is reported. The metasurface consists of coupled metallic sheets. It has a measured transmission efficiency of 80%, extinction ratio of 13.8 dB around 1.5 μm, and a full width half maximum bandwidth of 1.7 μm. It is as thin as 290 nm, has good performance tolerance against the angle of incidence and constituent nano‐structure geometry variations. This work demonstrates a practical asymmetric light transmission device with optimal performance for large scale manufacturing.

The recent progress in integrated quantum optics has set the stage for the development of an integrated platform for quantum information processing with photons, with potential applications in quantum simulation. Among the different material platforms being investigated, direct‐bandgap semiconductors and particularly gallium arsenide (GaAs) offer the widest range of functionalities, including single‐ and entangled‐photon generation by radiative recombination, low‐loss routing, electro‐optic modulation and single‐photon detection. This paper reviews the recent progress in the development of the key building blocks for GaAs quantum photonics and the perspectives for their full integration in a fully‐functional and densely integrated quantum photonic circuit.

We reveal unusually strong polarization sensitivity of electric and magnetic dipole resonances of high‐index dielectric nanoparticles placed on a metallic film. By employing dark‐field spectroscopy, we observe the polarization‐controlled transformation from high‐Q magnetic‐dipole scattering to broadband suppression of scattering associated with the electric dipole mode, and show numerically that it is accompanied by a strong enhancement of the respective fields by the nanoparticle. Our experimental data for silicon nanospheres are in an excellent agreement with both analytical calculations based on Green's function approach and the full‐wave numerical simulations. Our findings further substantiate dielectric nanoparticles as strong candidates for many applications in enhanced sensing, spectroscopy and nonlinear processes at the nanoscale.

In the development of microfluidic chips, conventional 2D processing technologies contribute to the manufacturing of basic microchannel networks. Nevertheless, in the pursuit of versatile microfluidic chips, flexible integration of multifunctional components within a tiny chip is still challenging because a chip containing micro‐channels is a non‐flat substrate. Recently, on‐chip laser processing (OCLP) technology has emerged as an appealing alternative to achieve chip functionalization through in situ fabrication of 3D microstructures. Here, the recent development of OCLP‐enabled multifunctional microfluidic chips, including several accessible photochemical/photophysical schemes, and photosensitive materials permiting OCLP, is reviewed. To demonstrate the capability of OCLP technology, a series of typical micro‐components fabricated using OCLP are introduced. The prospects and current challenges of this field are discussed.

This work proves the feasibility of a novel concept of differential absorption lidar based on the Scheimpflug principle. The range‐resolved atmospheric backscattering signal of a laser beam is retrieved by employing a tilted linear sensor with a Newtonian telescope, satisfying the Scheimpflug condition. Infinite focus depth is achieved despite employing a large optical aperture. The concept is demonstrated by measuring the range‐resolved atmospheric oxygen concentration with a tunable continuous‐wave narrow‐band laser diode emitting around 761 nm over a path of one kilometer during night time. Laser power requirements for daytime operation are also investigated and validated with single‐band atmospheric aerosol measurements by employing a broad‐band 3.2‐W laser diode. The results presented in this work show the potential of employing the continuous‐wave differential absorption lidar (CW‐DIAL) technique for remote profiling of atmospheric gases in daytime if high‐power narrow‐band continuous‐wave light sources were to be employed.

Fundamental science, as well as all communications and navigation systems, are heavily reliant on the phase, timing, and synchronization provided by low‐noise and agile frequency sources. Although research into varied photonic and electronic schemes have strived to improve upon the spectral purity of microwave and millimeter‐wave signals, the reliance on conventional electronic synthesis for tuning has resulted in limited progress in broadband sources. Using a digital‐photonic synthesizer architecture that derives its time‐base from a high‐stability optical reference cavity, we generate frequency‐agile and wideband microwave signals with exceptional dynamic range and with a fractional frequency instability of 1 × 10−15 at 1 s. The presented architecture demonstrates digitally controlled, user defined and broadband frequency tuning from RF to 100 GHz with orders‐of‐magnitude improvement in noise performance over room‐temperature electronic wide‐bandwidth synthesis schemes.

The demonstration of high efficiency and color tunability has brought organic light‐emitting devices (OLEDs) into the lighting and display market. High efficiency is one of the key issues for their commercial applications, for which much effort has been devoted to developing novel materials and device structures. It is well known that around 80% of the generated photons are trapped in OLED structure, so that there is still the greatest scope for significant improvements in its efficiency. This has driven the research towards the integration of micro/nano patterns into device structures that benefit from their abilities in manipulating the generation and propagation of photons. Micro/nano patterns with random or periodic morphologies have demonstrated their effect on the outcoupling of the trapped photons within the device. Moreover, the emitting properties other than the light extraction could be manipulated by introducing the micro/nano patterns. This article reviews the recent progresses in improving the light extraction and manipulating the emission properties of the OLEDs through the introduction of the micro/nano patterns by various fabrication strategies. The light manipulation of the micro/nano patterns in organic photovoltaics is briefly discussed considering its similar working principle and fabrication strategies to that of the OLEDs.

High performance semiconductor lasers on silicon are critical elements of next generation photonic integrated circuits. Transfer printing methods provide promising paths to achieve hybrid integration of III‐V devices on Si platforms. This paper presents materials and procedures for epitaxially releasing thin‐film microscale GaAs based lasers after their full fabrication on GaAs native substrates, and for subsequently transfer printing arrays of them onto Si wafers. An indium‐silver based alloy serves as a thermally conductive bonding interface between the lasers and the Si, for enhanced performance. Numerical calculations provide comparative insights into thermal properties for devices with metallic, organic and semiconductor interfaces. Under current injection, the first of these three interfaces provides, by far, the lowest operating temperatures. Such devices exhibit continuous‐wave lasing in the near‐infrared range under electrical pumping, with performance comparable to unreleased devices on their native substrates.

By investigating the transmission of electromagnetic waves through random media composed of a random cluster of inclusions embedded in a “double‐zero” medium with simultaneously near‐zero permittivity and permeability, a percolation behavior of photons squeezing through the gaps between random inclusions with unity transmittance is observed. Interestingly, such a percolation exhibits a threshold induced by the long‐range connectivity of the “nonconducting” component in the transverse direction instead of the “conducting” component in the propagation direction, which is distinctly different from those in normal percolations. This unusual phenomenon, obtained by full wave simulations, is explained analytically through the introduction of a geometric concept hereby denoted as “free surfaces”. This work reveals a unique type of percolation threshold for electromagnetic waves with potential applications in energy harvesting, sensors and switches.

Quantitative phase imaging (QPI), a method that precisely recovers the wavefront of an electromagnetic field scattered by a transparent, weakly scattering object, is a rapidly growing field of study. By solving the inverse scattering problem, the structure of the scattering object can be reconstructed from QPI data. In the past decade, 3D optical tomographic reconstruction methods based on QPI techniques to solve inverse scattering problems have made significant progress. In this review, we highlight a number of these advances and developments. In particular, we cover in depth Fourier transform light scattering (FTLS), optical diffraction tomography (ODT), and white‐light diffraction tomography (WDT).

This article presents a novel III‐V on silicon laser. This work exploits the phenomenon that a passive silicon cavity, side‐coupled to a III‐V waveguide, will provide high and narrow‐band reflectivity into the III‐V waveguide: the resonant mirror. This results in an electrically pumped laser with a threshold current of 4 mA and a side‐mode suppression ratio up to 48 dB.

Teleportation describes the transmission of information without transport of neither matter nor energy. For many years, however, it has been implicitly assumed that this scheme is of inherently nonlocal nature, and therefore exclusive to quantum systems. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that the concept of teleportation can be readily generalized beyond the quantum realm. We present an optical implementation of the teleportation protocol solely based on classical entanglement between spatial and modal degrees of freedom, entirely independent of nonlocality. Our findings could enable novel methods for distributing information between different transmission channels and may provide the means to leverage the advantages of both quantum and classical systems to create a robust hybrid communication infrastructure.

Transport of subwavelength electromagnetic (EM) energy has been achieved through near‐field coupling of highly confined surface EM modes supported by plasmonic nanoparticles, in a configuration usually on a two‐dimensional (2D) substrate. Vertical transport of similar modes along the third dimension, on the other hand, can bring more flexibility in designs of functional photonic devices, but this phenomenon has not been observed in reality. In this paper, designer (or spoof) surface plasmon resonators (‘plasmonic meta‐atoms’) are stacked in the direction vertical to their individual planes in demonstrating vertical transport of subwavelength localized surface EM modes. The dispersion relation of this vertical transport is determined from coupled‐mode theory and is verified with a near‐field transmission spectrum and field mapping with a microwave near‐field scanning stage. This work extends the near‐field coupled resonator optical waveguide (CROW) theory into the vertical direction, and may find applications in novel three‐dimensional slow‐light structures, filters, and photonic circuits.

A semiconductor optical amplifier at 2.0‐µm wavelength is reported. This device is heterogeneously integrated by directly bonding an InP‐based active region to a silicon substrate. It is therefore compatible with low‐cost and high‐volume fabrication infrastructures, and can be efficiently coupled to other active and passive devices in a photonic integrated circuit. On‐chip gain larger than 13 dB is demonstrated at 20 °C, with a 3‐dB bandwidth of ∼75 nm centered at 2.01 µm. No saturation of the gain is observed for an on‐chip input power up to 0 dBm, and on‐chip gain is observed for temperatures up to at least 50 °C. This technology paves the way to chip‐level applications for optical communication, industrial or medical monitoring, and non‐linear optics.

The generation of sub‐optical‐cycle, carrier–envelope phase‐stable light pulses is one of the frontiers of ultrafast optics. The two key ingredients for sub‐cycle pulse generation are bandwidths substantially exceeding one octave and accurate control of the spectral phase. These requirements are very challenging to satisfy with a single laser beam, and thus intense research activity is currently devoted to the coherent synthesis of pulses generated by separate sources. In this review we discuss the conceptual schemes and experimental tools that can be employed for the generation, amplification, control, and combination of separate light pulses. The main techniques for the spectrotemporal characterization of the synthesized fields are also described. We discuss recent implementations of coherent waveform synthesis: from the first demonstration of a single‐cycle optical pulse by the addition of two pulse trains derived from a fiber laser, to the coherent combination of the outputs from optical parametric chirped‐pulse amplifiers.

The design of micro‐optical resonator arrays are introduced and tailored towards refractive index sensing applications, building on the previously unexplored benefits of open dielectric stacks. The resonant coupling of identical hollow cavities present strong and narrow spectral resonance bands beyond that available with a single Fabry Perot interferometer. Femtosecond laser irradiation with selective chemical etching is applied to precisely fabricate stacked and waveguide‐coupled open resonators into fused silica, taking advantage of small 12 nm rms surface roughness made available by the self‐alignment of nanograting planes. Refractive index sensing of methanol‐water solutions confirm a very attractive sensing resolution of 6.5 × 10−5 RIU. Such high finesse optical elements open a new realm of optofluidic sensing and integrated optical circuit concepts for detecting minute changes in sample properties against a control solution that may find importance in chemical and biological sensors, telecom sensing networks, biomedical probes, and low‐cost health care products.
