Advances of radical initiation systems and their initiation mechanisms in vinyl polymerization through peroxycompound and amine systems as well as photo-induced charge transfer initiation in the presence of amine are briefly reviewed which is concerned with some generalization regarding to the role of amine in the form of aminium radical in such vinyl radical polymerization.  相似文献

The photoradical polymerization of vinyl acetate was performed using 4-methoxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (MTEMPO) as the mediator in the presence of bis(alkylphenyl)iodonium hexafluorophosphate (BAI). The MTEMPO/BAI system using 2,2’-azobis(isobutyronitrile) or 2,2’-azobis(4-methoxy-2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) as the initiator did not succeed in controlling the molecular weight and produced polymers that showed a bimodal gel permeation chromatography with the broad molecular weight distribution. On the other hand, the polymerization using 1-(cyano-1-methylethoxy)-4-methoxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine and BAI proceeded by the living mechanism based on linear increases in the first order time–conversion and conversion–molecular weight plots. The molecular weight distribution also increased with the increasing conversion due to cloudiness of the solution as the polymerization proceeded. It was found that the polymerization had a photolatency because the propagation stopped by interruption of the irradiation and was restarted by further irradiation.  相似文献

Stereoregulation in the cationic polymerization of various alkyl vinyl ethers was investigated with bis[(2,6‐diisopropyl)phenoxy]titanium dichloride ( 1 ; catalyst) in conjunction with the HCl adduct of isobutyl vinyl ether as an initiator in n‐hexane at −78 °C. The tacticities depended on the substituents of the monomers. Isobutyl and isopropyl vinyl ethers gave highly isotactic polymers (mm = 83%), whereas tert‐butyl and n‐butyl vinyl ethers resulted in lower isotactic contents (mm ∼ 50%) similar to those for TiCl4, a conventional Lewis acid, thus indicating that the steric bulkiness of the substituents was not the critical factor in stereoregulation. A statistical analysis revealed that the high isospecificity was achieved not by the chain end but by the catalyst 1 or the counteranion derived therefrom. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Bulk and/or solution polymerizations of a series of vinyl esters, e.g., vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl pivalate, and vinyl benzoate were conducted. Iodine-coloration, 1,2-glycol structure, molecular weight, and tacticity (triad and pentad) were measured for the resulting poly(vinyl alcohol)s (PVAs). The iodine-coloration abilities of PVAs, derived from poly(vinyl ester)s that were obtained through bulk polymerization at 60°C, depended on the starting monomer, increasing in the following order: vinyl benzoate < vinyl acetate < vinyl propionate < vinyl butyrate < vinyl pivalate. In solution polymerizations of vinyl propionate and vinyl butyrate, it was revealed that the tacticity of the derived PVAs apparently depended on the type and amount of polymerization solvent employed, as found previously in the case for vinyl acetate. The iodine-coloration of these PVA samples varied in the same order as their syndiotactic content, while no relationship was observed toward their 1,2-glycol content. The probabilities of the syndiotactic propagation at 60°C were estimated as 0.49 (benzoate), 0.54 (acetate), 0.55 (propionate), 0.56 (butyrate), and 0.60 (pivalate), respectively.  相似文献

In order to clarify the effect of bulky substituents on the stereoregulation of vinyl monomers, vinyl-1-adamantanecarboxylate and vinyl 1-adamantyl ether were synthesized and polymerized by radical and cationic mechanisms, respectively. As open-chain models of the adamantyl group, vinyl trialkylacetate (alkyl = ethyl, n-propyl, and n-butyl) and vinyl tri-n-propylcarbinyl ether were also synthesized and polymerized. The adamantly group in the vinyl ester favored syndiotactic propagation in a manner similar to the trimethylcarbinyl group. Higher homologs of tri-n-alkylcarbinyl group showed higher syndiotacticity but this effect was saturated in higher members of the series. The effect of the adamantyl group in vinyl ether was similar to that of the tert-butyl group, leading to high isotacticity on cationic polymerizations in nonpolar solvents and to atactic polymers in polar solvents, but the tri-n-propylcarbinyl group was found unique in leading to what was assumed to be a heterotactic polymer. Polymers with the adamantyl group showed much higher softening points than polymers of the corresponding open-chain groups.  相似文献

ESR studies on the radical polymerization of vinyl ethers were performed from ?50°C to room temperature using di-tert-butylperoxide as a photoinitiator. Well resolved ESR spectra were assigned to propagating radicals of vinyl ethers. Their hyperfine splitting constants due to α-proton were about 16 G, being smaller than those of ethyl acrylate and vinyl acetate. The smaller constants is ascribed to a deviation of the propagating radicals from sp2 hybrid structure. The reason why high polymers are not obtained from vinyl ethers by radical polymerization is discussed on the basis of information from the ESR studies.  相似文献

In this study, stereocontrolled poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm) brushes were grafted from surfaces by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in the presence of a Lewis acid, and the effect of PIPAAm brush tacticity on the thermoresponsive wettabiliy was investigated. PIPAAm grafted by ATRP in the presence of Y(OTf)(3) showed high isotacticity, while the control brush polymerized in the absence of Y(OTf)(3) was clearly atactic. The isotacticity and molecular weight of PIPAAm brushes were controlled by polymerization conditions. The wettability of isotactic PIPAAm-grafted surfaces decreased slightly below 10 °C, although the phase transition temperature of atactic surface was 30 °C, and the bulk isotactic polymer was water-insoluble between 5 and 45 °C.  相似文献

The metal‐catalyzed radical polymerization of vinyl chloride (VC) in ortho‐dichlorobenzene initiated with various activated halides, such as α,α‐dihaloalkanes, α,α,α‐trihaloalkanes, perfloroalkyl halides, benzyl halides, pseudohalides, allyl halides, sulfonyl halides, α‐haloesters, α‐halonitriles, and imidyl halides, in the presence of Cu(0)/2,2′‐bipyridine, Fe(0)/o‐phenantroline, TiCp2Cl2, and other metal catalysts is reported. The formation of the monoadduct between the initiator and VC was achieved with all catalysts. However, propagation was observed only for metals in their zero oxidation state because they were able to reinitiate from geminal dihalo or allylic chloride structures. Poly(vinyl chloride) with molecular weights larger then the theoretical limit allowed by chain transfer to VC were obtained even at 130 °C. In addition, the most elemental features of a living radical polymerization, such as a linear dependence of the molecular weight and a decrease of polydispersity with conversion, were observed for the most promising systems based on iodine‐containing initiators and Cu(0), that is, I? CH2? Ph? CH2? I/Cu(0)/bpy (where bpy = 2,2′‐bipyridyl), at 130 °C. However, because of the formation of inactive species via chain transfer to VC and other side reactions, the observed conversions were in most cases lower than 40%. A mechanistic interpretation of the chain transfer to monomer in the presence of Cu species is proposed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 3392–3418, 2001  相似文献

A new method for the photochemical initiation of polymerization of vinyl compounds in aqueous solution is described. The photochemically active species is an ion pair complex of the formula Fe3+X(X = OH, CI, N3, etc.). The light absorption by the ion pair leads to an electron transfer causing reduction of the cation and oxidation of the anion to an atom or free radical X. The latter leads to the initiation of polymerization in accordance with X + CH2CHR→XCH2 CHR . The kinetics of the reaction were studied by the measurement of: (a) ferrous ion formed (colorimetrically), (b) monomer disappearance (by titration and by weighting the polymer), (c) the chain length of the polymer (in the case of methyl methacrylate). The dependence of the quantum yield on the light intensity, light absorption fraction, and the concentration of vinyl monomer and ferrous ion added initially was investigated. A complete mechanism, both with regard to the formation of free radicals and the polymerization reaction, was put forward involving: (1) light absorption, (2) a primary dark back reaction, (3) dissociation of the primary product, (4) a secondary dark back reaction, (5) initiation of polymerization by free radicals, (6) propagation of polymerization, and (7) termination by recombination of active polymer endings. The mechanism was verified by the experimental results and some constant ratios were estimated quantitatively.  相似文献

The effect of fullerene (C60) on the radical polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) with dimethyl 2,2′‐azobisisobutyrate (MAIB) in benzene was investigated kinetically and by means of ESR. C60 was found to act as an effective inhibitor in the present polymerization. All C60 molecules used were incorporated into poly(VAc) during polymerization. The relationship of induction period and initiation rate reveals that a C60 molecule can trap 15 radicals formed in the polymerization system. The polymerization rate (Rp) after the induction period is given by Rp = k [MAIB]0.6 [VAc]2.0 (60 °C), which is similar to that observed in the absence of C60. Stable fullerene radical (C) was observed in the polymerization system by ESR. The C concentration increased with time and was then saturated. The saturation time well corresponds to the induction period observed in the polymerization. About 20% of C60 molecules added could survive as stable C. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The branched structure formation during free radical polymerization of vinyl acetate is investigated in detail by application of the computer simulations on the basis of the Monte Carlo sampling technique. Simulations are made for the whole molecular weight distribution (MWD), the MWDs for polymer molecules containing 0, 1, 2, 3, etc., branch points, the branching density as functions of both size and the number of branch points, the spatial distribution of the branched chains, etc. It was found that the effect of polyradicals on the formed MWD could be neglected for batch polymerizations of the present reaction system. A large number of relatively small branch chains are formed due to both chain transfer to polymer (CTP) and the terminal double-bond polymerization (TDBP). The radius of gyration at a Θ state is found to agree satisfactorily with the Zimm-Stockmayer equation for random branching in spite of the heterogeneous branched structure formed in the polymerization. The present investigation reveals important characteristics of the complex molecular structure formation during free radical polymerization that involves both CTP and TDBP. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Absolute rate constants of the vinyl benzoate polymerization have been measured by use of the intermittent illumination method in various aromatic solvents and ethyl acetate at 30°C. The determination of absolute rate constants showed that effects of solvent on the polymerization rate of vinyl benzoate were mainly ascribed to the variation of kp values with solvents rather than that of kt values. The kp values for solvents used increased in the order: benzonitrile < ethyl benzoate < anisole < chlorobenzene < benzene < fluorobenzene < ethyl acetate. There was an eightfold difference between the largest and the smallest values The large variation among kp values was explained neither by the copolymerization through solvents nor the chain transfer to solvents, but by a reversible complex formation between the propagating radical and aromatic solvents. This explanation was supported by a correlation between kp values and calculated delocalization stabilizations for the complexes.  相似文献

Vinyl acetate was polymerized at high initiation rate with 2,2′-azobis(2,4-dimethyl valeronitrile) as initiator at 50°C. In this polymerization, the power dependence of polymerization rate on the initiation rate is smaller than at lower concentration of monomer. This dependence was kinetically analyzed at each given concentration of monomer. Average degree of polymerization of polymer formed depends on the concentration of initiator. This dependence was explained by considering chain and primary radical terminations and transfer to monomer of polymer radical, and the initiator efficiency (=0.503) was deduced. It was found that the chain termination is inversely proportional to solvent viscosity, but the primary radical termination is not inversely proportional to solvent viscosity. Further, the value of the primary radical termination rate constant (=1.4 × 109l./mole-sec) was estimated.  相似文献

The initiating ability of organosilicon peroxides, Me4-mSi(OOCMe3)mwherem = 1−3, for polymerization of vinyl monomers has been quantitatively characterized. Complex formation between monomers and Lewis acids has been found to activate the polymerization process. The activation effect is observed for a ratio [Lewis acid]/[monomer] of 0.003 to 0.02. The complex formation parameters (equilibrium constant and complex composition) have been determined by PMR, thermochemical and cryoscopic methods. Organosilicon peroxides have been found to influence the composition of copolymers; polyfunctional peroxides can be used to prepare block copolymers.  相似文献

The kinetics of vinyl chloride polymerization initiated by benzoyl peroxide doubly labelled with 14C and 'H were studied in 1,2-dichloroethane solution at 60°. The importance of primary radical termination in the polymerization is examined by kinetic analysis and by analysis of polymers for combined initiator fragments.  相似文献

The free radical polymerization of vinyl monomers such as styrene, methylmethacrylate, methyacrylate, acrylonitrile, vinylacetate, etc. in the presence of diphenylbutadiyne, was investigated. Both rates of polymerization and molecular weights of polymer decreased by the addition of diphenylbutadiyne. The degree of retardation depended on the stability of propagating radicals. The butadiyne does not react with the propagating radicals having high Q values, but it seems to trap the radicals temporarily thus retarding the polymerization  相似文献
