Many experimental investigations on the temperature dependence of the refractive index of optical fibers have been reported previously, however a satisfying theoretical explanation for it is still absent. In this paper, a theoretical model about the temperature dependence of the refractive index of optical fibers is presented and it is in agreement with the previous experimental results. This work is a significant reference for the research and development of temperature sensors based on optical fiber delay lines.  相似文献

The characteristics of leaky modes in microstructured fibers with finite-thickness absorbing coatings are studied theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that, if the thickness of the coating is constant, the fiber has a quasi-periodic transmission spectrum. The period and depth of modulation of the spectrum are determined by resonance coupling between the modes of the fiber and coating. Since the constants of mode propagation in the coating are very sensitive to environmental parameters, the discovered effect seems to be promising for sensor applications.  相似文献

Wavelength resolved measurements of the numerical apertures and the profiles of graded index fibers have been performed by the far- and near-field methods, respectively. Quantitative results for the spectral dispersion of the numerical aperture of fibers are in very good agreement with theoretical results, which are obtained by using a 3-term Sellmeier series. Together with spectral attenuation measurements these results allow the approximate determination of fiber dopants.  相似文献

The usual theories of ultrasonic attenuation (Landau-Rumer and Akhiezer) are in disagreement with experiments involving hypersonic phonons (Brillouin scattering). This is shown here by measurements on NaCl and KCl. We observe a Tn dependence with n approximately equal to 2.8, and an attenuation increasing with temperature in the low and high temperature range respectively. An extension of the Landau-Rumer and Akhiezer theories to hypersonic frequencies is proposed. Our theoretical expressions give a good account of the temperature dependence of the attenuation in the whole temperature range.  相似文献

The strain dependence of the optical power of Brillouin scattering in optical fibers has been measured for the first time to our knowledge. Together with measurements of the dependence of Brillouin power on temperature and the variation of Brillouin frequency with temperature and strain, we demonstrate, for what we believe to be the first time, the feasibility of a simultaneous temperature and strain sensor based on spontaneous Brillouin scattering.  相似文献

The spectral excess attenuation caused by coupling between the guided HE11 mode and radiation modes is calculated with the aid of the formula derived by Marcuse for the radiation loss of a monomode optical fiber with step-index profile and sinusoidally perturbed core radius. The pronounced minima and maxima of the spectral excess attenuation curve converge as the spatial frequency of the perturbation of the core radius increases. Even perturbation amplitudes as small as 0.01 μm may lead to excess attenuations of the order of 10 dB/km if the radiation wavelength does not coincide with an attenuation minimum. The spectral behavior of the excess attenuation can be utilized to design fibers which act as optical filters.  相似文献

The effect of hydrostatic pressure (up to 28 MPa) on Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) within two types of bare, single-mode fibers is studied via Brillouin optical time domain analysis technique. Experimental results show a negative linear relation between pressure and BFS, with almost the same sensitivity in both types of fibers. The average value of experimental slopes is -0.742 MHz/MPa. This value is found to be well suited to theoretical analysis on the basis of data on bulk silica glass in previous reports. This preliminary evaluation may result in a new method for distributed pressure sensing along silica optical fiber.  相似文献

The decay of coherently excited longitudinal optical phonons in GaP has been observed through time delayed coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering measurements with picosecond light pulses. The temperature dependence of the decay is compared to that observed through Raman linewidth measurements and to that predicted theoretically for spontaneous three-phonon decay processes.  相似文献

Ytterbium-doped fiber lasers are making impressive leaps in power production. Yet in spite of fiber’s large surface area to volume ratio which is beneficial for cooling, such power inevitably leads to high core temperatures that in turn affect the laser performance. In this paper, the temperature effects on the emission and fluorescence lifetime of ytterbium-doped optical fibers are investigated. The temperature dependence of all-optical poling of azobenzene–polyimide films was experimentally investigated. The poling efficiency decreased with the increase of the sample temperature during the optical poling processes. The experimental result can be explained by considering the relation between the lifetime of the triplet-state of the azobenzene molecule and the repetition rate of the laser pulses used in the poling processes.  相似文献

In order to analyze the effect of spectral dependencies of radiation-induced attenuation in polarization maintaining fibers on interferometric fiber optic gyroscopes at near-infrared wavelengths, phosphorus-doped, germanium-doped and pure-silica-core fibers were exposed to a 60Co γ-radiation source, as well as their spectral properties were compared and interpreted by color centers theory involving total dose-dependent infrared absorption bands. Based on testing and comparing the radiation-induced attenuation spectra, the loss variation and mean wavelength shift in fibers at 1300 nm and 1550 nm wavelengths are discussed. Finally, the random walk coefficient degradation and scale factor error induced by spectral dependencies of radiation-induced attenuation in fibers are verified.  相似文献

The reflectivity of sputtered Zirconium nitride films on glass substrate has been investigated in the spectral energy range of 0.8–6.1 eV as a function of deposition temperature varying between 373 and 723 K. Optical constants of the prepared films have been determined using the Drude analysis. Experimental results showed strong dependency of optical properties of the films, such as optical resistivity on the substrate temperature. The temperature increase of the substrate has shown an increase in both the plasmon frequency and electron scattering time. The electrical behavior of the films showed a good agreement between their optical and electrical resistivity.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of chromatic dispersion is examined for various types of fiber. Its coefficient is found to depend strongly on the dispersion slope. Dispersion-flattened fiber has a significantly low coefficient of -0.0005(ps/nm/km)/ degrees C , compared with -0.0038(ps/nm/km)/ degrees C for large-core nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber. Transmission lines with low dispersion slopes consisting of pure silica core fiber and dispersion-compensating fiber also exhibit low coefficients of less than -0.001(ps/nm/km)/ degrees C because of their compensating effects.  相似文献

The effects of color centers' absorption on fibers and interferometric fiber optical gyroscopes(IFOGs) are studied in the paper. The irradiation induced attenuation(RIA) spectra of three types of polarization-maintaining fibers(PMFs), i.e.,P-doped, Ge-doped, and pure silica, irradiated at 100 Gy and 1000 Gy are measured in a wavelength range from 1100 nm to1600 nm and decomposed according to the Gaussian model. The relationship of the color centers absorption intensity with radiation dose is investigated based on a power model. Furthermore, the effects of all color centers' absorption on RIA and mean wavelength shifts(MWS) at 1300 nm and 1550 nm are discussed respectively. Finally, the random walk coefficient(RWC) degradation induced from RIA and the scale factor error induced by MWS of the IFOG are simulated and tested at a wavelength of 1300 nm. This research will contribute to the applications of the fibers in radiation environments.  相似文献
