Synthesis of isomeric 2-oxazolidinones from (1<Emphasis Type="Italic">R</Emphasis>,2<Emphasis Type="Italic">R</Emphasis>)-and (1<Emphasis Type="Italic">S</Emphasis>,2<Emphasis Type="Italic">S</Emphasis>)-2-amino-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3-propanediols

A synthesis is reported for (4R,5R)-and (4S,5S)-4-hydroxymethyl-5-(4-nitrophenyl)oxazolidin-2-ones and (1′R,4R)-and (1′S,4S)-4-[hydroxy(4-nitrophenyl)methyl]oxazolidin-2-ones from (1R,2R)-and (1S,2S)-2-amino-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3-propanediols. Chemical Components of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Leptopus chinensis</Emphasis>

Six substances were isolated from the branches and leaves of the Chinese herb Leptopus Chinensis (Bunge) Pojark. by column chromatography for the first time. Mercaptan addition to 1-<Emphasis Type="Italic">O</Emphasis>-allyl-2,3,4,6-tetra-<Emphasis Type="Italic">O</Emphasis>-acetyl-<Emphasis Type="Italic">β</Emphasis>-D-galactopyranose

Addition of ethyl-, propyl-, and n-butylmercaptans to 1-O-allyl-2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-galactopyranose in the presence of benzoyl peroxide catalyst was studied for the first time. The products were 1-O-(3-ethylthiopropyl)-2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-galactopyranose, 1-O-(3-propylthiopropyl)-2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-galactopyranose, and 1-O-(3-butylthiopropyl)-2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-galactopyranose. Reaction of frangula-emodin with <Emphasis Type="Italic">α</Emphasis>-bromoalkylmethylketones

The alkylation of 1,6,8-trihydroxy-3-methylanthraquinone (frangula-emodin) by α-bromoalkylmethylketones was investigated. Hydroxyls in the 1-and 8-positions of the β-derivatives were O-acylated. The Heterotactic Enthalpic Interaction Coefficients of <Emphasis Type="Italic">α</Emphasis>-Amino Acids with Maltose in Aqueous Solution at <Emphasis Type="Italic">T</Emphasis>=298.15 K

The mixing enthalpies of maltose with several typical α-amino acids (glycine, L-alanine, L-serine, L-valine, L-threonine and L-proline) and dilution enthalpies of each compound have been determined in aqueous solutions at T=298.15 K by a flow-mixing microcalorimeter. The heterotactic enthalpic pairwise interaction coefficients, h _xy , of each amino acid with maltose have been calculated by the McMillan–Mayer formalism, and are discussed in terms of intermolecular interactions of the hydrated solute species.     

Composition of essential oils from <Emphasis Type="Italic">Salvia anatolica</Emphasis>, a new species endemic from Turkey

The component composition of essential oils produced by steam distillation from flower heads, leaves, and stems of Salvia anatolica (Lamiaceae), a recently described new species endemic from Turkey, was studied by GC/FID and GC/MS. A total of 127 volatile components representing 96% of the oil was identified in essential oil from flower heads and leaves. It was found that the principal oil components of flower heads and leaves were α-pinene (10.9%), β-pinene (6.7%), α-copaene (6.3%), heptacosane (6.2%), and hexadecanoic acid (5.0%). A total of 109 volatile compounds representing 87.9% of the oil was characterized in essential oil isolated from stems. The principal oil components of stems were identified as hexadecanoic acid (27.2%), tetradecanoic acid (15.2%), dodecanoic acid (5.5%), and α-copaene (5.0%). __________ Translated from Khimiya Prirodnykh Soedinenii, No. 6, pp. 552–555, November–December, 2007.

A new method is proposed for the synthesis of indole derivatives containing a chiral substituent at the nitrogen atom, which includes the direct alkylation of indole derivatives with tert-butyl (2S)-(p-tolylsulfonyloxy)propionate, obtained from commercial ethyl (S)-lactate with subsequent conversion to the corresponding p-toluenesulfonyloxy derivative by hydrolysis, and esterification. 5-Arylidene Derivatives of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Meldrum</Emphasis>’s Acid as Synthons in Pyrano[4,3-<Emphasis Type="Italic">b</Emphasis>]pyran Synthesis

Summary. The reactions of 5-arylidene derivatives of Meldrum’s acid with ethyl vinyl ether or N-vinyl-2-oxazolidinone yielded trans-trans-(2,4:4,7)-pyrano[4,3-b]pyrans, cis-trans-(2,4:4,7)-pyrano[4,3-b]pyrans, or diastereoisomeric mixtures of pyrano[4,3-b]pyrans and reactions with 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran afforded Michael adducts. The reactions of 5-arylidene derivatives of Meldrum’s acid with cyanoacetic acid derivatives do not provide appropriate pyrans.     

Hetero-<Emphasis Type="Italic">Diels-Alder</Emphasis> reaction of propenenitriles with enol ethers: a convenient approach to functionalized 3,4-dihydro-2<Emphasis Type="Italic">H</Emphasis>-pyrans

The hetero-Diels-Alder reaction of 3-(N-acetyl-N-benzylamino)-2-formylprop-2-enenitrile with enol ethers yielded cis/trans diastereoisomers of 2-alkoxy-4-amino-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran-5-carbonitriles in moderate yields. Acidic hydrolysis of cis-diastereoisomer in concentrated sulfuric acid gave 2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyrydine-3-carbaldehyde. The reaction of 2-benzoyl-3-heteroaromaticprop-2-enenitriles with enol ethers afforded diastereoisomeric cis/trans cycloadducts in good yields. The structure of the products is discussed in terms of configuration and preferred conformation. Host–Guest Complexation of <Emphasis Type="Italic">β</Emphasis>-, <Emphasis Type="Italic">γ</Emphasis>-Cyclodextrin with Alkyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromides in Aqueous Solution

As a continuation of our previous investigation, interactions between cyclodextrin (β-CD), γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) and alkyl trimethylammonium bromides in aqueous solutions have been studied with titration calorimetry and ¹H NMR at 298.15 K. The results are discussed in terms of the amphiphilic interaction of CD with surfactants and the iceberg structure formed by water molecules existing around the hydrophobic tail of surfactant molecules. The stoichiometry of the β-CD–surfactant system is 1:1 whereas that of the γ-CD–surfactant system is 1:2. The corresponding formation enthalpy (negative) of the complexes of the two systems decreases with an increase in the number of carbon atoms (n) in hydrophobic chain of surfactant molecule, C _n H_2n+1, whereas the entropy increases with the enlargement of n.     

Chemical Constituents of Brown Rice Grain (<Emphasis Type="Italic">Oryza sativa</Emphasis>)

One new compound 3,7,11,15,19-pentamethyl-9α,10α,11α,17α,18α-pentahydroxy-n-tetracosan-1-oxy-p-hydroxycaffeoate (oryzaterpenyl caffeoate) (1), together with three known fatty acids linoleic acid, stearic acid and myristic acid were isolated and identified from the rice grain of Oryza sativa. The structure of the new compound was elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques (¹H-¹HCOSY, ¹H-¹³C HETCOR) aided by EI-MS, and IR spectra. __________ Published in Khimiya Prirodnykh Soedinenii, No. 6, pp. 535–537, November–December, 2005.     

β-Galactosidase from <Emphasis Type="Italic">Penicillium canescens</Emphasis>. Properties and immobilization

β-galactosidase from Penicillium canescens was immobilized on chitosan, sepharose-4B, foamable polyurethane and some other carriers. The highest yield of immobilization (up to 98%) was obtained by using chitosan as a carrier. The optimum pH and temperature were not significantly altered by immobilization. High stability of immobilized β-galactosidase during storage was demonstrated. Efficient lactose saccharification (over 90%) in whey was achieved by using immobilized β-galactosidase.     

Oxidation of α-methylstyrene on an MCM-22 encapsulated (<Emphasis Type="Italic">R,R</Emphasis>)-(−)-<Emphasis Type="Italic">N,N′</Emphasis>-bis(3,5-di-<Emphasis Type="Italic">tert</Emphasis>-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediaminocobalt(II) catalyst

(R, R)-(−)-N, N′-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediaminocobalt(II) was encapsulated into MCM-22 using the zeolite synthesis method. The encapsulated catalyst proved to be active in the oxidation of α-methylstyrene with NaOCl with higher specific activity than the homogeneous catalyst. At the same time, this encapsulated catalyst was completely inactive in the hydrolytic kinetic resolution of racemic styrene oxide. This observation is in a good correlation with the assumption of the cooperative bimetallic mechanism proposed by Annis and Jacobsen.     

Low-molecular-weight phenolic compounds from <Emphasis Type="Italic">Hedysarum theinum</Emphasis> roots

Isoflavonoids (−)-medicarpin, (−)-vestitol, formononetin, 8-hydroxydaidzein, and 6″-O-acetylononin were isolated for the first time in addition to (−)-catechin, (−)-epicatechin, protocatechoic acid, raspberry ketone, and rhododendrol from the alcohol extract of Hedysarum theinum roots. __________ Translated from Khimiya Prirodnykh Soedinenii, No. 1, pp. 26–28, January–February, 2008.     

New glycosidic and other constituents from hulls of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Oryza sativa</Emphasis>

Three new compounds, 4-hydroxymethylene-7-(9,9,13-trimethylcyclohexyl)-heptanyl-3′,7′,7′-trimethylcyclohexa-2′,4′-dien-1′-oate (1), 1-(n-hexadec-7-enoxy)-6-(n-octadecanoxy)-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), and (Z)-12-hydroxy-9-octadecenoic acid-12-β-D-glucopyranoside (3), along with the known compound hexacosanoic acid (4), were isolated and identified from the rice hulls of Oryza sativa. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques (¹H-¹H COSY, ¹H-¹³C HETCOR, DEPT) aided by EIMS, FABMS, HRFABMS, and IR spectra. <Emphasis Type="Italic">O,O</Emphasis>-diphenyl <Emphasis Type="Italic">N</Emphasis>-sulfonylbenzimidoylphosphonates,a novel type of C-phosphorylated imines

A preparative method for the synthesis of first representatives of O,O-diphenyl N-sulfonylbenzimidoylphosphonates was proposed. The method involves oxidation of the corresponding α-(sulfonylamino)benzylphosphonates. The σ-constants of the N-sulfonylbenzimidoylphosphonate group were estimated by ¹⁹F NMR spectroscopy. The imidoylphosphonates obtained easily formed stable adducts at the C=N bond with P-and O-nucleophiles. Dedicated to the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences T. A. Mastryukova. Structures of new polar steroids from the Far-Eastern starfish <Emphasis Type="Italic">Ctenodiscus crispatus</Emphasis>

A fraction of sulfated polyhydroxylated steroids from the Far-Eastern starfish Ctenodiscus crispatus was investigated. The main component of this fraction was identified as (22E,24R,25R)-24-methyl-5α -cholest-22-en-3β,5,6β,15α,25,26-hexol 26-O-sulfate. For the compound stereoisomeric with respect to the side chain, the (24R,25S) or (24S,25R) relative configurations were assigned to the C(24) and C(25) chiral centers. The structures of two other compounds isolated from the fraction were identified as (22E, 24ξ)-26,27-bisnor-24-methyl-5α-cholest-22-en-3β,5,6β,15α,25-pentol 25-O-sulfate and (22E, 24ξ,25ξ)-24-methyl-5α-cholest-22-en-3β,5,6β,8,15α,25,26-heptol 26-O-sulfate.
