In the empirical Bayes (EB) decision problem consisting of squared error estimation of a Poisson mean, a prior distribution λ is placed on the gamma family of prior distributions to produce Bayes EB estimators which are admissible. A subclass of such estimators is shown to be asymptotically optimal (a.o.). The results of a Monte Carlo study are presented to demonstrate the favorable a.o. property of the Bayes EB estimators in comparison with other competitors.  相似文献

Consider the problem of estimating the mean of a normal population when independent samples from this as well as a second normal population are available. Pre-test estimators which combine the two sample means if a test of the hypothesis of equal population means accepts but otherwise use only the first sample mean, are compared to limited translation estimators which are derived in the spirit of Bickel (1984, Ann. Statist., 12, 864–879) (we also cover the cases of unknown variances). Our conclusion is that if the accuracy with which the second population mean can be estimated is of the same or better order of magnitude as teh accuracy with which the first can be estimated, then the limited translation estimators largely dominate the pre-test estimators in terms of mean square error loss.This research was supported by grants from the FRD of the CSIR of South Africa.  相似文献

本文首先研究了含三个方差分量的线性混合随机效应模型改进的ANOVA估计, 此估计在均方损失下一致优于ANOVA估计. 由于这些方差估计取负值的概率大于零, 对得到的估计在某非负点采用截尾的方法得到非负估计是一种常用的方法. 对文章中提出的估计, 研究了此估计在某非负点截尾之后得到的估计在均方损失意义下优于截尾之前的估计的充分条件, 同时给出ANOVA估计在截尾之后优于它本身的充分条件, 而且将得到的结论推广到更一般的线性混合随机效应模型.  相似文献

研究一类方差分量模型中的方差分量的估计改进问题,首先在含两个方差分量模型中给出σ21二次型估计类,并且此估计类还具有无偏性和不变性.考虑二次损失(δ-θ)2,在此估计类基础上放弃无偏性进行非负改进,不仅得到优于二次不变无偏估计类的σ21的非负二次不变估计类,而且还说明了它优于方差分析估计和最小均方误差估计,文献[5]中给出s>2时的非负改进,但是非负改进存在是有条件的,本文克服了这个缺陷.最后给出了非负改进存在的充分必要条件.  相似文献

Stein-type and Brown-type estimators are constructed for general families of distributions which improve in the sense of Pitman closeness on the closest (in a class) estimator of a parameter. The results concern mainly scale parameters but a brief discussion on improved estimation of location parameters is also included. The loss is a general continuous and strictly bowl shaped function, and the improved estimators presented do not depend on it, i.e., uniform domination is established with respect to the loss. The normal and inverse Gaussian distributions are used as illustrative examples. This work unifies and extends previous relevant results available in the literature.  相似文献

We propose and analyze a new class of estimators for the variance parameter of a steady-state simulation output process. The new estimators are computed by averaging individual estimators from “folded” standardized time series based on overlapping batches composed of consecutive observations. The folding transformation on each batch can be applied more than once to produce an entire set of estimators. We establish the limiting distributions of the proposed estimators as the sample size tends to infinity while the ratio of the sample size to the batch size remains constant. We give analytical and Monte Carlo results showing that, compared to their counterparts computed from nonoverlapping batches, the new estimators have roughly the same bias but smaller variance. In addition, these estimators can be computed with order-of-sample-size work.  相似文献

In this paper the exponential rates, bounds, and local exponential rates for likelihood ratio estimators are studied. Under certain regularity conditions, a family of likelihood ratio estimators is shown to be admissible in exponential rate. In this paper we deal with comparisons among several estimators available in situations of multicollinearity (e.g., the r-k class estimator proposed by Baye and Parker, the ordinary ridge regression (ORR) estimator, the principal components regression (PCR) estimator and also the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator) for a misspecified linear model where misspecification is due to omission of some relevant explanatory variables. These comparisons are made in terms of the mean square error (mse) of the estimators of regression coefficients as well as of the predictor of the conditional mean of the dependent variable. It is found that under the same conditions as in the true model, the superiority of the r-k class estimator over the ORR, PCR and OLS estimators and those of the ORR and PCR estimators over the OLS estimator remain unchanged in the misspecified model. Only in the case of comparison between the ORR and PCR estimators, no definite conclusion regarding the mse dominance of one over the other in the misspecified model can be drawn.  相似文献

In this paper, the problem of estimating the scale matrix and their eigenvalues in a Wishart distribution and in a multivariate F distribution (which arise naturally from a two-sample setting) are considered. A new class of estimators which shrink the eigenvalues towards their arithmetic mean are proposed. It is shown that the new estimator which dominates the usual unbiased estimator under the squared error loss function. Estimation of the mean function in nonparametric regression is usefully separated into estimating the means at the observed factor levels—a one-way layout problem—and interpolation between the estimated means at adjacent factor levels. Candidate penalized least squares (PLS) estimators for the mean vector of a one-way layout are expressed as shrinkage estimators relative to an orthogonal regression basis determined by the penalty matrix. The shrinkage representation of PLS suggests a larger class of candidate monotone shrinkage (MS) estimators. Adaptive PLS and MS estimators choose the shrinkage vector and penalty matrix to minimize estimated risk. The actual risks of shrinkage-adaptive estimators depend strongly upon the economy of the penalty basis in representing the unknown mean vector. Local annihilators of polynomials, among them difference operators, generate penalty bases that are economical in a range of examples. Diagnostic techniques for adaptive PLS or MS estimators include basis-economy plots and estimates of loss or risk.  相似文献

We consider the problem of estimating the unknown parameters of linear regression in the case when the variances of observations depend on the unknown parameters of the model. A two-step method is suggested for constructing asymptotically linear estimators. Some general sufficient conditions for the asymptotic normality of the estimators are found, and an explicit form is established of the best asymptotically linear estimators. Consider the problem of estimating a normal variance based on a random sample when the mean is unknown. Scale equivariant estimators which improve upon the best scale and translation equivariant one have been proposed by several authors for various loss functions including quadratic loss. However, at least for quadratic loss function, improvement is not much. Herein, some methods are proposed to construct improving estimators which are not scale equivariant and are expected to be considerably better when the true variance value is close to the specified one. The idea behind the methods is to modify improving equivariant shrinkage estimators, so that the resulting ones shrink little when the usual estimate is less than the specified value and shrink much more otherwise. Sufficient conditions are given for the estimators to dominate the best scale and translation equivariant rule under the quadratic loss and the entropy loss. Further, some results of a Monte Carlo experiment are reported which show the significant improvements by the proposed estimators.  相似文献
