The core congruence on a monoid

The core congruence is defined and its properties studied. It is shown that every fundamental regular monoid can be faithfully represented by its action by translations on its set of left congruences.This research was partially supported by a grant from Tulane University.

On semigroups in which every Rees one-sided congruence is a congruence

The purpose of this paper is to examine the structure of those semigroups which satisfy one or both of the following conditions: A_r(A_ℓ): The Rees right (left) congruence associated with any right (left) ideal is a congruence. The conditions A_r and A_ℓ are generalizations of commutativity for semigroups. This paper is a continuation of the work of Oehmke [5] and Jordan [4] on H-semigroups (H for hamiltonian, a semigroup is called an H-semigroup if every one-sided congruence is a two-sided congruence). In fact the results of section 2 of Oehmke [5] are proved here under the condition A_r and/or A_ℓ and not the stronger hamiltonian condition. Section 1 of this paper is essentially a summary of the known results of Oehmke. In section 2 we examine the structure of irreducible semigroups satisfying the condition A_r and/or A_ℓ. In particular we determine all regular (torsion) irreducible semigroups satisfying both the conditions A_r and A_ℓ. Canonical forms for unitary congruence and *congruence

We use methods of the general theory of congruence and *congruence for complex matrices – regularization and cosquares – to determine a unitary congruence canonical form (respectively, a unitary *congruence canonical form) for complex matrices A such that āA (respectively, A ²) is normal. As special cases of our canonical forms, we obtain – in a coherent and systematic way – known canonical forms for conjugate normal, congruence normal, coninvolutory, involutory, projection, λ-projection, and unitary matrices. But we also obtain canonical forms for matrices whose squares are Hermitian or normal, and other cases that do not seem to have been investigated previously. We show that the classification problems under (a) unitary *congruence when A ³ is normal, and (b) unitary congruence when AāA is normal, are both unitarily wild, so these classification problems are hopeless.     

Disjoint congruence classes and a timetabling application

We consider a combinatorial problem motivated by a special simplified timetabling problem for subway networks. Mathematically the problem is to find (pairwise) disjoint congruence classes modulo certain given integers; each such class corresponds to the arrival times of a subway line of a given frequency. For a large class of instances we characterize when such disjoint congruence classes exist and how they may be determined. We also study a generalization involving a minimum distance requirement between congruence classes, and a comparison of different frequency families in terms of their “efficiency”. Finally, a general method based on integer programming is also discussed.

Asymptotics of solutions to the Laplace–Beltrami equation on a rotation surface with a cusp

In this work we study an asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the Laplace–Beltrami operator on a rotation surface near a cuspidal point. To this end we use the WKB-approximation. This approach describes the asymptotic behaviour of the solution more explicitly than abstract theory for operators with operator-valued coefficients.     

Proof of a conjecture on a congruence modulo 243 for overpartitions

Results and problems on congruence lattice representations

We survey some results and problems on congruence lattice representations. We will consider congruence representations and similarity type, and we will consider simultaneous congruence representations. A seemingly innocuous problem unites the sections. A conformal mapping for a rectilinear congruence

In this paper we deal with oriented rectilinear congruences in a three-dimensional Euclidean space E³ establishing a conformal mapping between their middle surface and their middle envelope. We give some properties and determine a special class of them, which have a minimal middle envelope.
