The teaching potential of evaluation and optimization methods in analytical chemistry

Summary The teaching potential for analytical chemistry of some mathematical and statistical tools is discussed. It is concluded that some of the so-called chemometric techniques should be taught and that they permit to develop a philosophy of problem solving in analytical chemistry.

Unterrichtsmöglichkeiten für Bewertungs- und Optimierungsmethoden in der Analytischen Chemie

Zusammenfassung Die Notwendigkeit der Aufnahme solcher Methoden in die Unterrichtspläne für Analytische Chemie wird diskutiert und eine Reihe von statistischen und mathematischen Verfahren (sog. Chemometrie) wird beschrieben, die sich für die Aufnahme in die Lehrpläne eignen.

     

Personal computers in the laboratory

Summary Personal computers (small programmable desk-top computers based on microprocessors) offer high computing power at a reasonable price. They are therefore well suitable for analytical laboratories. As today's analysts are not adequately trained in efficiently using these instruments, it appears to be necessary to introduce this subject into the chemistry curriculum in an appropriate way. Proposals in that regard are presented.

Zusammenfassung Persönliche Computer (kleine programmierbare Tischrechner auf der Grundlage von Mikroprozessoren) bieten eine große Rechenkapazität zu einem annehmbaren Preis und eignen sich daher gut für analytische Laboratorien. Da der heutige Analytiker noch nicht ausreichend im rationellen Gebrauch dieser Geräte geschult ist, erscheint es notwendig, dieses Thema in geeigneter Weise in die Ausbildungspläne einzubeziehen. Entsprechende Vorschläge werden diskutiert.

Summary The historical development of analytical education is traced from the turn of the century and an outlook into the future is presented, characterized by the disappearance of qualitative analysis and the emphasis laid upon instrumental methods and interdisciplinary courses.

Tendenzen im analytisch-chemischen Unterricht an amerikanischen Universitäten

Zusammenfassung Die historische Entwicklung in der analytischen Ausbildung seit Anfang des Jahrhunderts wird aufgezeigt und ein Ausblick auf die Zukunft gegeben, wobei das Verschwinden der qualitativen Analyse und die Betonung der instrumentellen Methoden sowie die Ausdehnung auf benachbarte Disziplinen kennzeichnend sind.

Objectives in teaching analytical chemistry

Summary Demands on the analyst of today are systematically studied and the consequences for university education in analytical chemistry are discussed. The system adopted at the Technical University of Budapest is shown in detail. This comprises 5 years of university education in all the essential fundamental subjects and after subsequent successful work in a laboratory for at least 2 years, a further evening education in specialized topics for 2 years. The advantages of this system are set out.

Ausbildungsziele in der Analytischen Chemie

Zusammenfassung Die Anforderungen an den heutigen Analytiker werden systematisch untersucht und die Folgerungen für die Hochschulausbildung diskutiert. Das an der Technischen Universität Budapest eingeführte Ausbildungssystem wird näher beschrieben. Es umfaßt neben einem 5jährigen Hochschulunterricht in den wesentlichen grundlegenden Fächern eine weitere 2jährige Spezialausbildung im Abendstudium, die frühestens nach 2jähriger erfolgreicher Laborarbeit begonnen werden kann. Die Vorteile dieses Systems werden aufgezeigt.

     

The teaching of analytical chemistry in the laboratory

Summary The operation of a combined inorganic analytical course designed to be as flexible as possible, and to use the student's time most economically is described. It has been found that students can be interested by carrying out experiments on their own preparations, but that considerable caution is needed in the interpretation of the results because their preparations may vary considerably and in a manner which is not predictable. The advantages and disadvantages of such a course are discussed.

Analytisch-chemischer Unterricht im Laboratorium

Zusammenfassung Ein kombinierter anorganisch-analytischer Lehrgang wird beschrieben, der möglichst flexibel ist und die aufgewendete Zeit nutzbringend einzusetzen erlaubt. Durch Versuche mit eigenen Präparaten wird das Interesse des Studenten geweckt; jedoch ist bei der Auswertung der Ergebnisse Vorsicht geboten, da die Präparate unterschiedliche Zusammensetzung aufweisen können. Vor- und Nachteile eines solchen Lehrganges werden diskutiert.

Present state of teaching Analytical Chemistry in Hungary

Summary A review is given on the present state and characteristic features of the higher education system in Hungary with special regard to Analytical Chemistry. Similarities and differences between science university and technical university education are shown. New approach in teaching analytical chemistry at the Technical Universities of Czechoslovakia

Summary The 5 year study programme of the Technical Universities in Czechoslovakia comprises two courses in Analytical Chemistry. In the second year of study there are 3 h lectures of AC and 9 h of laboratory work per week. In the third year instrumental analysis is taught — 3 h lectures and 7 h practical work per week. Trends in education in analytical chemistry

Summary At the session of the WPAC of Fechem on education in analytical chemistry it was concluded that it is now essential to include chemometrics and basic knowledge of computers in all courses on analytical chemistry.
