To explore the potential of ternary blend bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaics as a general platform for increasing the attainable performance of organic solar cells, a model system based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as the donor and two soluble fullerene acceptors, phenyl-C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PC(61)BM) and indene-C(60) bisadduct (ICBA), was examined. In all of the solar cells, the overall ratio of polymer to fullerene was maintained at 1:1, while the composition of the fullerene component (PC(61)BM:ICBA ratio) was varied. Photovoltaic devices showed high short-circuit current densities (J(sc)) and fill factors (FF) (>0.57) at all fullerene ratios, while the open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) was found to vary from 0.61 to 0.84 V as the fraction of ICBA was increased. These results indicate that the V(oc) in ternary blend BHJ solar cells is not limited to the smallest V(oc) of the corresponding binary blend solar cells but can be varied between the extreme V(oc) values without significant effect on the J(sc) or FF. By extension, this result suggests that ternary blends provide a potentially effective route toward maximizing the attainable J(sc)V(oc) product (which is directly proportional to the solar cell efficiency) in BHJ solar cells and that with judicious selection of donor and acceptor components, solar cells with efficiencies exceeding the theoretical limits for binary blend solar cells could be possible without sacrificing the simplicity of a single active-layer processing step.  相似文献

Ternary blend bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells containing as donor polymers two P3HT analogues, high-band-gap poly(3-hexylthiophene-co-3-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophene) (P3HT(75)-co-EHT(25)) and low-band-gap poly(3-hexylthiophene-thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole) (P3HTT-DPP-10%), with phenyl-C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PC(61)BM) as an acceptor were studied. When the ratio of the three components was varied, the open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) increased as the amount of P3HT(75)-co-EHT(25) increased. The dependence of V(oc) on the polymer composition for the ternary blend regime was linear when the overall polymer:fullerene ratio was optimized for each polymer:polymer ratio. Also, the short-circuit current densities (J(sc)) for the ternary blends were bettter than those of the binary blends because of complementary polymer absorption, as verified using external quantum efficiency measurements. High fill factors (FF) (>0.59) were achieved in all cases and are attributed to high charge-carrier mobilities in the ternary blends. As a result of the intermediate V(oc), increased J(sc) and high FF, the ternary blend BHJ solar cells showed power conversion efficiencies of up to 5.51%, exceeding those of the corresponding binary blends (3.16 and 5.07%). Importantly, this work shows that upon optimization of the overall polymer:fullerene ratio at each polymer:polymer ratio, high FF, regular variations in V(oc), and enhanced J(sc) are possible throughout the ternary blend composition regime. This adds to the growing evidence that the use of ternary blends is a general and effective strategy for producing efficient organic photovoltaics manufactured in a single active-layer processing step.  相似文献

Nb(2)O(5) as a new electron transport layer (ETL) was used for double junction polymer solar cells. The Nb(2)O(5) ETL was prepared by spin coating a Nb(2)O(5) sol-gel solution onto the active layer of the optical front subcell. The double junction devices using Nb(2)O(5) ETL exhibit an open circuit voltage (V(oc)) of 1.30 V, which is close to the sum of the s of the individual subcells. The current density-voltage (J-V) simulation showed that the double junction device performance using Nb(2)O(5) as ETL could be significantly increased by reducing the series resistance (R(se)) and matching the current densities of the individual subcells.  相似文献

Herein,we fabricated all-polymer solar cells(all-PSCs)based on a fluorinated wide-bandgap p-type conjugated polymer PM6 as the donor, and a narrow bandgap n-type conjugated polymer PZ1 as the acceptor. In addition to the complementary absorption and matching energy levels, the optimized blend films possess high cystallinity, predominantly face-on stacking, and a suitable phase separated morphology. With this active layer, the devices exhibited a high V_(oc)of 0.96 V,a superior J_(sc)of 17.1 mA cm~(-2),a fine fill factor(FF)of 68.2%,and thus an excellent power conversion efficiency(PCE)of 11.2%,which is the highest value reported to date for single-junction all-PSCs.Furthermore,the devices showed good storage stability. After 80 d of storage in the N_2-filled glovebox, the PCE still remained over 90%of the original value.Large-area devices(1.1 cm~2)also demonstrated an outstanding performance with a PCE of 9.2%,among the highest values for the reported large-area all-PSCs.These results indicate that the PM6:PZ1 blend is a promising candidate for scale-up production of large area high-performance all-PSCs.  相似文献

Photovoltaic technology is an alternative resource for renewable and sustainable energy and low costs organic photovoltaic devices such as bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells, which are selective candidates for the effective conversion of solar energy into electricity. Asymmetric phthalocyanines containing electron acceptor and donor groups create high photovoltaic conversion efficiency in dye sensitized solar cells. In this study, a new unsymmetrical zinc phthalocyanine was designed and synthesized including thiophene and amine groups at peripherally positions for BHJ solar cell. The structure of the targeted compound (4) was characterized comprehensively by FT-IR, UV–Vis, 1H-NMR, and MALDI-TOF MS spectroscopies. The potential of this compound in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaic devices as donor was also researched as function of blend ratio (blend ratio was varied from 0.5 to 4). For this purpose, a series of BHJ devices with the structure of fluorine doped indium tin oxide (FTO)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate)/ ZnPc:[6,6]- phenyl-C61- butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blend/Al with identical thickness of ZnPc:PCBM layer were fabricated and characterized. Photo current measurements in 4 revealed that the observed photo current maximum is consistent with UV-vis spectra of the compound of 4. Preliminary studies showed that the blend ratio has a critical effect on the BHJ device performance parameters. Photovoltaic conversion efficiency of 6.14% was achieved with 4 based BHJ device.  相似文献

Organic polymer solar cells (PSCs) have attracted increasing attention due to light weight, low cost, flexibility and roll‐to‐roll manufacturing. However, the limited light harvest range of the photoactive layer greatly restrains the power conversion efficiency (PCE) enhancement. In order to expand the light absorption range and further enhance the PCE of the PSCs, tandem structures have been designed and demonstrated. In tandem solar cell, the intermediate layer (IML) plays a critical role in physically and electrically connection of the two subcells. Herein, we apply titanium (diisopropoxide) bis(2,4‐pentanedionate) (TIPD) as both electrode modification layer and intermediate layer to investigate the feasibility in inverted tandem polymer solar cells. The same photoactive layers of PTB7‐Th:PC71BM are adopted in both front and rear subcells to simplify the evaluation of effectiveness of TIPD layer in tandem structures. By modulating the treatment condition of IML and the thickness of photoactive layer, efficient inverted tandem PSCs have been achieved with minimized voltage loss and excellent charge transportation, giving a best Voc of 1.54 V, which is almost two times that of the single bulk heterojunction (BHJ)‐PSC (0.78 V) and an enhanced PCE up to 8.11%.  相似文献

Conjugated copolymer derivatives of poly[2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MDMO-PPV) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) containing 10% of alkyne functionalities in the side chains have been prepared using the sulfinyl precursor route and the Rieke method, respectively. With the aim of expanding the absorption range of these conjugated polymers for their use in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) polymer:fullerene solar cells, appropriate phthalocyanine (Pc) molecules have been covalently bound through a post-polymerization "click chemistry" reaction between the alkyne functionalities in the side chains of the copolymers and a Pc functionalized with an azide moiety. The resulting poly(p-phenylenevinylene)-Pc (PPV-Pc) material holds a 9 mol% content of Pcs, while the polythiophene-Pc material (PT-Pc) contains a 8 mol% of Pc-functionalization in the side chains. As expected, the presence of the Pc contributes to the extension of the absorption up to 700 nm. BHJ solar cells have been prepared using PPV-Pc and PT-Pc materials in combination with PCBM. Although the Pc absorption contributes to the generation of photocurrent, the overall power conversion efficiencies (PCE) obtained from these cells are lower than those obtained with BHJ P3HT:PCBM (1:1) and MDMO-PPV:PCBM (1:4) solar cells. A plausible explanation could be the moderate solubility of the PPV-Pc and PT-Pc materials that limits the processing into thin films.  相似文献

The effect of the rutile content on the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) composed of mixed-phase TiO(2) photoelectrode has been investigated. The mixed-phase TiO(2) particles with varied amounts of rutile, relative to anatase phase, are synthesized by an in situ method where the concentration of sulfate ion is used as a phase-controlling parameter in the formation of TiO(2) using TiCl(4) hydrolysis. The surface area (S(BET)) varies from 33 (pure rutile) to 165 (pure anatase) m(2) g(-1). Generally, both the current density (J(sc)) and photo-conversion efficiency (η) decrease as the rutile content increases. The incorporation of rod-shaped rutile particles causes low uptake of dye due to the reduced surface area, as well as slow electron transport in less efficiently-stacked structure. However, maximum J(sc) (14.63 mA cm(-2)) and η (8.69%) appear when relatively low rutile content (16%) is employed. The reported synergistic effect by the efficient interparticle electron transport from rutile to anatase seems to overbalance the decrease of surface area when small amount of rutile particles is incorporated.  相似文献

Branched‐alkyl‐substituted poly(thieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione‐alt‐3,4‐difluorothiophene) (PTPD[2F]T) can be used as a polymer acceptor in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells with a low‐band‐gap polymer donor (PCE10) commonly used with fullerenes. The “all‐polymer” BHJ devices made with PTPD[2F]T achieve efficiencies of up to 4.4 %. While, to date, most efficient polymer acceptors are based on perylenediimide or naphthalenediimide motifs, our study of PTPD[2F]T polymers shows that linear, all‐thiophene systems with adequately substituted main chains can also be conducive to efficient BHJ solar cells with polymer donors.  相似文献

Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells have been the subject of intensive academic interest over the past two decades, and significant commercial effort has been directed towards this area with the vison of developing the next generation of low cost solar cells. Materials development has played a vital role in the dramatic improvement of both DSSC and BHJ solar cell performance in the recent years. Organic conjugated polymers and small molecules that absorb solar light in the visible and near infrared (NIR) regions represent a class of emering materials and show a great potential for the use of different optoelectronic devices such as DSSCs and BHJ solar cells. This account describes the emering class of near infrared (NIR) organic polymers and small molecules having donor and acceptors units, and explores their potential applications in the DSSCs and BHJ solar cells.  相似文献

Organic bulk-heterojunctions (BHJ) and solar cells containing the trimetallic nitride endohedral fullerene 1-[3-(2-ethyl)hexoxy carbonyl]propyl-1-phenyl-Lu(3)N@C(80) (Lu(3)N@C(80)-PCBEH) show an open circuit voltage (V(OC)) 0.3 V higher than similar devices with [6,6]-phenyl-C[61]-butyric acid methyl ester (PC(61)BM). To fully exploit the potential of this acceptor molecule with respect to the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of solar cells, the short circuit current (J(SC)) should be improved to become competitive with the state of the art solar cells. Here, we address factors influencing the J(SC) in blends containing the high voltage absorber Lu(3)N@C(80)-PCBEH in view of both photogeneration but also transport and extraction of charge carriers. We apply optical, charge carrier extraction, morphology, and spin-sensitive techniques. In blends containing Lu(3)N@C(80)-PCBEH, we found 2 times weaker photoluminescence quenching, remainders of interchain excitons, and, most remarkably, triplet excitons formed on the polymer chain, which were absent in the reference P3HT:PC(61)BM blends. We show that electron back transfer to the triplet state along with the lower exciton dissociation yield due to intramolecular charge transfer in Lu(3)N@C(80)-PCBEH are responsible for the reduced photocurrent.  相似文献

Conjugated polymers with nearly planar backbones have been the most commonly investigated materials for organic-based electronic devices. More twisted polymer backbones have been shown to achieve larger open-circuit voltages in solar cells, though with decreased short-circuit current densities. We systematically impose twists within a family of poly(hexylthiophene)s and examine their influence on the performance of polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. A simple chemical modification concerning the number and placement of alkyl side chains along the conjugated backbone is used to control the degree of backbone twisting. Density functional theory calculations were carried out on a series of oligothiophene structures to provide insights on how the sterically induced twisting influences the geometric, electronic, and optical properties. Grazing incidence X-ray scattering measurements were performed to investigate how the thin-film packing structure was affected. The open-circuit voltage and charge-transfer state energy of the polymer:fullerene BHJ solar cells increased substantially with the degree of twist induced within the conjugated backbone--due to an increase in the polymer ionization potential--while the short-circuit current decreased as a result of a larger optical gap and lower hole mobility. A controlled, moderate degree of twist along the poly(3,4-dihexyl-2,2':5',2'-terthiophene) (PDHTT) conjugated backbone led to a 19% enhancement in the open-circuit voltage (0.735 V) vs poly(3-hexylthiophene)-based devices, while similar short-circuit current densities, fill factors, and hole-carrier mobilities were maintained. These factors resulted in a power conversion efficiency of 4.2% for a PDHTT:[6,6]-phenyl-C(71)-butyric acid methyl ester (PC(71)BM) blend solar cell without thermal annealing. This simple approach reveals a molecular design avenue to increase open-circuit voltage while retaining the short-circuit current.  相似文献

We were able to attach CdSe quantum dots (QDs) having a ZnS inorganic glue layer directly to a mesoporous TiO(2) (mp-TiO(2)) surface by spray coating and thermal annealing. Quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells based on CdSe QDs having ZnS as the inorganic glue layer could easily transport generated charge carriers because of the intimate bonding between CdSe and mp-TiO(2). The application of spray pyrolysis deposition (SPD) to obtain additional CdSe layers improved the performance characteristics to V(oc) = 0.45 V, J(sc) = 10.7 mA/cm(2), fill factor = 35.8%, and power conversion efficiency = 1.7%. Furthermore, ZnS post-treatment improved the device performance to V(oc) = 0.57 V, J(sc) = 11.2 mA/cm(2), fill factor = 35.4%, and power conversion efficiency = 2.2%.  相似文献

Organic solar cells based on a series of water-soluble zinc phthalocyanines (wsZnPc) with varying numbers of sulfonate peripheral substituents and a C60 donor have been fabricated and characterised. We find that the number of substituents affects both the V(oc) and J(sc) of the devices, with the disulfonated wsZnPc devices performing best.  相似文献

Donor and acceptor spatial distributions were directly formed in a surface relief grating of structured bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaic devices by simple periodic photopolymerization. Enhanced photocurrents were observed in the structured BHJ photovoltaic devices and formation of the D/A spatial distribution was confirmed by Kelvin probe force microscopy. This technique enables the fabrication of structured BHJ photovoltaic devices with solution-processable organic semiconductors, and has tremendous potential for controlling D/A spatial distribution in organic optoelectronics devices.  相似文献

Natural-chlorophyll-related porphyrins, including (2H, Zn, Cu)-protoporphyrin IX (Por-1) and Zn-mesoporphyrin IX (Por-2), and chlorins, including chlorin e? (Chl-1), chlorin e? (Chl-2), and rhodin G? (Chl-3), have been used in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). For porphyrin sensitizers that have vinyl groups at the β-positions, zinc coordinated Por-1 gives the highest solar-energy-to-electricity conversion efficiency (h) of up to 2.9%. Replacing the vinyl groups of ZnPor-1 with ethyl groups increases the open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) from 0.61 V to 0.66 V, but decreases the short-circuit current (J(sc)) from 7.0 mA·cm?2 to 6.1 mA·cm?2 and the value of h to 2.8%. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations suggest that the higher J(sc) values of Zn-based porphyrin sensitizers result from the favorable electron injection from the LUMO at higher energy levels. In the case of the chlorin sensitizers, the number of carboxyl protons has a large effect on the photovoltaic performance. Chl-2 with two carboxyl protons gives much higher values of J(sc), V(oc), and h than does Chl-1 with three carboxyl protons. Replacing the protons of Chl-1 with sodium ions can substantially improve the photovoltaic performance of Chl-1-based solar cells. Furthermore, the sodium salt of Chl-3 with an aldehyde group at the C7 position shows poorer photovoltaic performance than does the sodium salt of Chl-1 with methyl groups at the C7 position. This is due to the low light-harvesting capability of Chl-3.  相似文献

Effects of incorporation of acid-treated single-wall carbon nanotubes (a-SWCNs) in TiO(2) film and of anchorage of dye-linked, a-SWCNs (hereafter dye-SWCNs) to the TiO(2)/electrolyte interface on photocurrent-voltage characteristics of dye-sensitized solar cells were studied. Compared with an unmodified cell, the modified cell with the a-SWCNs in TiO(2) film showed a 25% increase in short-circuit photocurrent (J(sc)). The J(sc) increase is correlated with improved connectivity between the a-SWCNs and the TiO(2) particles and with enhanced light scattering by TiO(2) clusters formed in the presence of the a-SWCNs. In the case of anchoring dye-SWCNs to the TiO(2)/electrolyte interface, the open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) increased by as much as 0.1 V, possibly due to the basicity of the TiO(2) surface from NH groups of ethylenediamine moieties of the anchored dye-SWCNs.  相似文献

Wide-bandgap π-conjugated donor-acceptor (D-A) alternating copolymers consisting of benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione (BDTD) as the electron-accepting building block have demonstrated outstanding performances in organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cell devices. But the synthesis of these polymers has been largely limited to conventional polymerization techniques, particularly Stille-coupling based polycondensations, which often involve tedious preactivation of C-H bonds using highly flammable reagents such as butyl lithium and highly toxic reagents such as trialkyl tin chlorides. Herein, we report a “greener” synthetic route of direct arylation polymerization to a series of wide bandgap D-A copolymers with a common acceptor building block of BDTD. The structure–property relationship in these polymers is characterized. We also present the device performances of these polymers in both thin-film field-effect transistors and organic BHJ solar cells involving the BDTD-based polymers as the electron donors and fullerene derivatives as the electron acceptors. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
