Using a method of collecting nanoparticles at a water/hexane interface in a close-packed monolayer film and transferring such films onto a solid substrate, three-dimensional multilayer films of nanoparticles were formed. The packed nanoparticles were gold nanospheres (NS) with a 26 nm diameter or gold nanorods (NR) with a 31 nm diameter and 74 nm length. We investigated variations in the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) intensities from such nanoparticle films as the layer compositions were changed. The films stacked with NR layers generated much higher SERS intensity than those of NS layers. The SERS intensities from both kinds of films increased as the number of layers were increased. However, when the NR layer and NS layer were stacked alternately, SERS intensity varied in a zigzag fashion. It was found that the structure of top layer plays a distinguishable role in generating strong SERS enhancement while the lower layers contribute to SERS with less dependency on structures. Interlayer coupling as well as intralayer coupling was considered in order to explain the observations.

A gold nanoparticle film for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was successfully constructed by an ionic surfactant-mediated Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method. The gold film was formed by adding ethanol to a gold colloid/hexane mixture in the presence of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). Consequently, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) assembled at the water/hexane interface due to the decrease in surface charge density of AuNPs. Since DTAB binds the gold surface by a coulombic force, rather than a chemical bonding, it is easily replaced by target molecules for SERS purposes. The SERS enhancement factor of the 80 nm gold nanoparticle film was approximately 1.2 × 10(6) using crystal violet (CV) as a Raman dye. The SERS signal from the proposed DTAB-mediated film was approximately 10 times higher than that from the octanethiol-modified gold film, while the reproducibility and stability of this film compared to an octanethiol-modified film were similar. This method can also be applied to other metal nanostructures to fabricate metal films for use as a sensitive SERS substrate with a higher enhancement factor.

Aggregation of gold nanoparticles of increasing size has been studied as a consequence of adsorption of 2-aminothiophenol (ATP) on gold nanoparticle surfaces. The capping property of ATP in the acidic pH range has been accounted from UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) studies. The effect of nanoparticle size (8-55 nm) on the nature of aggregation as well as the variation in the optical response due to variable degree of interparticle coupling effects among the gold particles have been critically examined. Various techniques such as transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, zeta-potential, and average particle size measurement were undertaken to characterize the nanoparticle aggregates. The aggregate size, interparticle distances, and absorption band wavelengths were found to be highly dependent on the pH of the medium and the concentration of the capping agent, ATP. The acquired SERS spectra of ATP relate the interparticle spacing. It has been observed that the SERS signal intensities are different for different sized gold nanoparticles.

This paper experimentally and theoretically investigates the influence of an underlying metallic substrate (i.e., gold and silver) on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of labeled gold nanoparticles and the concomitant impact on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signal from the labels. These experiments employ nanoparticles of varied sizes (30-100 nm) that are coated with a bifunctional Raman scatterer composed of (1) a disulfide for chemisorption to the nanoparticle surface, (2) a succinimidyl ester for formation of a covalent linkage to an amine-terminated self-assembled monolayer on the underlying substrate, and (3) an aryl nitro group with an intrinsically strong Raman active vibrational mode. This approach allows facile systematic assessments of how variations in nanoparticle size, substrate composition, and the gap between the nanoparticle and substrate affect the SPR of the bound particles. Both UV-vis transmission and reflection absorption (incident angle of 58 degrees ) spectroscopy are used to characterize the effect of each of these parameters on SPR. These results are then correlated with SERS enhancement factors (EFs) that were determined by accounting for particle surface concentrations, which were measured by atomic force microscopy, and the absolute number of labels, which were calculated on the basis of the surface area of each of the different-sized particles. All SERS spectra were collected at an incident angle of 58 degrees with respect to the surface normal. As expected, the SPR for particles in solution red-shifts with increasing particle size. More importantly, the SPR moves to even longer wavelengths as the size of immobilized particles increases and as the gap between the immobilized particle and substrate decreases. The red shift is also greater for a gold nanoparticle tethered to a gold substrate compared to a silver substrate. A theoretical model for the extinction of a particle above a flat substrate, corrected for surface scattering, radiation damping, and dynamic depolarization, is also briefly detailed. SPR results calculated with the model are consistent with the shifts observed in the SPR position for each of the manipulated experimental variables. The largest EFs are found for samples with an SPR maximum (lambda(max)) between the wavelengths for laser excitation (633 nm) and the Raman band for the symmetric nitro stretch of the particle coating (690 nm). As an example, an order of magnitude in the SERS enhancement factor is gained for a 60-nm particle immobilized 1.2 nm above a gold substrate (SPR lambda(max) = 657 nm) compared to that for a 30-nm particle (SPR lambda(max) = 596 nm).

Adsorption of nanoparticles at the solid-liquid interface
The adsorption of differently charged nanoparticles at liquid-solid interfaces was investigated by in situ X-ray reflectivity measurements. The layer formation of positively charged maghemite (γ-Fe(2)O(3)) nanoparticles at the aqueous solution-SiO(2) interface was observed while negatively charged gold nanoparticles show no adsorption at this interface. Thus, the electrostatic interaction between the particles and the charged surface was determined as the driving force for the adsorption process. The data analysis shows that a logarithmic particle size distribution describes the density profile of the thin adsorbed maghemite layer. The size distribution in the nanoparticle solution determined by small angle X-ray scattering shows an average particle size which is similar to that found for the adsorbed film. The formed magehemite film exhibits a rather high stability.

The surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of a number of species and strains of bacteria obtained on novel gold nanoparticle (approximately 80 nm) covered SiO(2) substrates excited at 785 nm is reported. Raman cross-section enhancements of >10(4) per bacterium are found for both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria on these SERS active substrates. The SERS spectra of bacteria are spectrally less congested and exhibit greater species differentiation than their corresponding non-SERS (bulk) Raman spectra at this excitation wavelength. Fluorescence observed in the bulk Raman emission of Bacillus species is not apparent in the corresponding SERS spectra. Despite the field enhancement effects arising from the nanostructured metal surface, this fluorescence component appears "quenched" due to an energy transfer process which does not diminish the Raman emission. The surface enhancement effect allows the observation of Raman spectra of single bacterial cells excited at low incident powers and short data acquisition times. SERS spectra of B. anthracis Sterne illustrate this single cell level capability. Comparison with previous SERS studies reveals how the SERS vibrational signatures are strongly dependent on the morphology and nature of the SERS active substrates. The potential of SERS for detection and identification of bacterial pathogens with species and strain specificity on these gold particle covered glassy substrates is demonstrated by these results.

Plasmonic nanoparticles such as those of gold or silver have been recently investigated as a possible way to improve light absorption in thin film solar cells. Here, a simple method for the preparation of spherical plasmonic gold nanoparticles in the form of a colloidal solution is presented. The nanoparticle diameter is controlled in the range from several nm to tens of nm depending on the synthesis parameters with the size dispersion down to 14 %. The synthesis is based on thermal decomposition and reduction of the chloroauric acid in the presence of a stabilizing capping agent (surfactant) that is very slowly injected into the hot solvent. The surfactant prevents uncontrolled nanoparticle aggregation during the growth process. The nanoparticle size and shape depend on the type of the stabilizing agent. Surfactants with different lengths of the hydrocarbon chains such as Z-octa-9-decenylamine (oleylamine) with AgNO3 and polyvinylpyrrolidone with AgNO3 were used for the steric stabilization. Hydrodynamic diameter of the gold nanoparticles in the colloidal solution was determined by dynamic light scattering while the size of the nanoparticle metallic core was found by small-angle X-ray scattering. The UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer measurements revealed a plasmon resonance absorption in the 500–600 nm range. Self-assembled nanoparticle arrays on a silicon substrate were prepared by drop casting followed by spontaneous evaporation of the solvent and by a modified Langmuir-Blodgett deposition. The degree of perfection of the self-assembled arrays was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering. Homogeneous close-packed hexagonal ordering of the nanoparticles stretching over large areas was evidenced. These results document the viability of the proposed nanoparticle synthesis for the preparation of high-quality plasmonic templates for thin film solar cells with enhanced power conversion efficiency, surface enhanced Raman scattering, and other applications.

The coalescence stability of poly(dimethylsiloxane) emulsion droplets in the presence of silica nanoparticles ( approximately 50 nm) of varying contact angles has been investigated. Nanoparticle adsorption isotherms were determined by depletion from solution. The coalescence kinetics (determined under coagulation conditions at high salt concentration) and the physical structure of coalesced droplets were determined from optical microscopy. Fully hydrated silica nanoparticles adsorb with low affinity, reaching a maximum surface coverage that corresponds to a close packed monolayer, based on the effective particle radius and controlled by the salt concentration. Adsorbed layers of hydrophilic nanoparticles introduce a barrier to coalescence of approximately 1 kT, only slightly reduce the coalescence kinetics, and form kinetically unstable networks at high salt concentrations. Chemically hydrophobized silica nanoparticles, over a wide range of contact angles (25 to >90 degrees ), adsorb at the droplet interface with high affinity and to coverages equivalent to close-packed multilayers. Adsorption isotherms are independent of the contact angle, suggesting that hydrophobic attraction overcomes electrostatic repulsion in all cases. The highly structured and rigid adsorbed layers significantly reduce coalescence kinetics: at or above monolayer surface coverage, stable flocculated networks of droplets form and, regardless of their wettability, particles are not detached from the interface during coalescence. At sub-monolayer nanoparticle coverages, limited coalescence is observed and interfacial saturation restricts the droplet size increase. When the nanoparticle interfacial coverage is >0.7 and <1.0, mesophase-like microstructures have been noted, the physical form and stability of which depends on the contact angle. Adsorbed nanoparticle layers at monolayer coverage and composed of a mixture of nanoparticles with different hydrophobisation levels form stable networks of droplets, whereas mixtures of hydrophobized and hydrophilic nanoparticles do not effectively stabilize emulsion droplets.

The silver-modified gold nanoplate arrays as bimetallic surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates were optimized for the surface-enhanced Raman detection of streptavidin/biotin monolayer assemblies. The bimetallic gold–silver nanoplate arrays were fabricated by coating silver nanoparticles uniformly on the gold nanoplate arrays. Depending on silver nanoparticle coating, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak of the bimetallic gold–silver nanoplate arrays blue-shifted and broadened significantly. The common probe molecule, Niel Blue A sulfate (NBA) was used for testing the SERS activity of the bimetallic gold–silver nanoplate arrays. The SERS intensity increased with the silver nanoparticle coating, due to a large number of hot spots and nanoparticle interfaces. The platforms were tested against a monolayer of streptavidin functionalized over the bimetallic gold–silver nanoplate arrays showing that good quality spectra could be acquired with a short acquisition time. The supramolecular interaction between streptavidin (strep) and biotin showed subsequent modification of Raman spectra that implied a change of the secondary structure of the host biomolecule. And the detection concentration for biotin by this method was as low as 1.0 nM. The enhanced SERS performance of such bimetallic gold–silver nanoplate arrays could spur further interest in the integration of highly sensitive biosensors for rapid, nondestructive, and quantitative bioanalysis, particularly in microfluidics.

A novel microfluidic molding process was used to form microscale features of gold nanoparticles on polyimide, glass, and silicon substrates. This technique uses permeation pumping to pattern and concentrate a nanoparticle ink inside microfluidic channels created in a porous polymer template in contact with a substrate. The nanoparticle ink is self-concentrated in the microchannels, resulting in dense, close-packed nanoparticle features. The method allows for better control over the structure of printed features at a resolution that is comparable to inkjet printing, and is purely additive with no residual layers or etching required. The process uses low temperatures and pressures and takes place in an ambient environment. After patterning, the gold nanoparticles were sintered into continuous and conductive gold traces.

Langmuir film properties, UV-vis spectroscopy, epifluorescence microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to study CdSe quantum dots (QDs) in 2D. By combining these results, it was possible to determine the molar absorptivity, limiting nanoparticle area, luminescence property, and arrangement of the QDs in the monolayer films at the air-water interface. Either trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) or 1-octadecanethiol (ODT) stabilized the QDs. The data collected reveal that TOPO forms close-packed monolayers on the surface of the QDs and that ODT-stabilized QDs undergo alkyl chains interdigitation. It was also found that varying the nanoparticle size, nature of surfactant, surface pressure, and mixed monolayers could help engineer the 2D self-assembly of the QDs at the air-water interface. Of practical importance is the transfer of these monolayer films onto hydrophilic or hydrophobic solid substrates, which could be successfully accomplished via the Langmuir-Blodgett film deposition technique.

After over 30 years of development, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is now facing a very important stage in its history. The explosive development of nanoscience and nanotechnology has assisted the rapid development of SERS, especially during the last 5 years. Further development of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy is mainly limited by the reproducible preparation of clean and highly surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrates. This review deals with some substrate-related issues. Various methods will be introduced for preparing SERS substrates of Ag and Au for analytical purposes, from SERS substrates prepared by electrochemical or vacuum methods, to well-dispersed Au or Ag nanoparticle sols, to nanoparticle thin film substrates, and finally to ordered nanostructured substrates. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of the advantages and weaknesses of different methods in preparing SERS substrates. Closely related to the application of SERS in the analysis of trace sample and unknown systems, the existing cleaning methods for SERS substrates are analyzed and a combined chemical adsorption and electrochemical oxidation method is proposed to eliminate the interference of contaminants. A defocusing method is proposed to deal with the laser-induced sample decomposition problem frequently met in SERS measurement to obtain strong signals. The existing methods to estimate the surface enhancement factor, a criterion to characterize the SERS activity of a substrate, are analyzed and some guidelines are proposed to obtain the correct enhancement factor.

Reproducible detection of a target molecule is demonstrated using temporally stable solution-phase silica-void-gold nanoparticles and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). These composite nanostructures are homogeneous (diameter = 45 +/- 4 nm) and entrap single 13 nm gold nanoparticle cores inside porous silica membranes which prevent electromagnetic coupling and aggregation between adjacent nanoparticles. The optical properties of the gold nanoparticle cores and structural changes of the composite nanostructures are characterized using extinction spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy, respectively, and both techniques are used to monitor the formation of the silica membrane. The resulting nanostructures exhibit temporally stable optical properties in the presence of salt and 2-naphthalenethiol. Similar SERS spectral features are observed when 2-naphthalenethiol is incubated with both bare and membrane-encapsulated gold nanoparticles. Disappearance of the S-H Raman vibrational band centered at 2566 cm(-1) with the composite nanoparticles indicates that the target molecule is binding directly to the metal surface. Furthermore, these nanostructures exhibit reproducible SERS signals for at least a 2 h period. This first demonstration of utilizing solution-phase silica-void-gold nanoparticles as reproducible SERS substrates will allow for future fundamental studies in understanding the mechanisms of SERS using solution-phase nanostructures as well as for applications that involve the direct and reproducible detection of biological and environmental molecules.

An original diffraction model for the analysis of grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) from the nanoparticle Langmuir films was developed. This model relies on the concept of the 2D hexagonal paracrystal and employs the distorted-wave Born approximation that is relevant for GISAXS measurements at the air/water interface when the angle of incidence is close to the critical value. The model comprises the cases of the close-packed nanoparticle monolayer and bilayer with the AB-type layer stacking. In this way, both the lateral (along the interface) and vertical (normal to the interface) correlations of the nanoparticle positions can be analyzed. The model was applied to an in situ GISAXS study of the formation of a silver nanoparticle Langmuir film during compression at the air/water interface in the Langmuir-Blodgett trough. Spherical nanoparticles of 5.8 ± 0.6 nm diameter were employed. Different compression stages starting from the submonolayer up to the monolayer collapse via bilayer formation were analyzed in terms of the mean lateral interparticle distance, degree of paracrystal disorder, interlayer distance, vertical disorder, and layer-stacking type in the bilayer as well as the ratio between the monolayer and bilayer coverage in the final film. The model developed is applicable to any nanoparticle Langmuir film formed at the air/liquid interface to extract structural parameters on the nanoscale. The particular results obtained have direct implications on the preparation of silver plasmonic templates with "hot spots" for surface-enhanced Raman scattering.
