The classical occupancy problem is concerned with studying the number of empty bins resulting from a random allocation of m balls to n bins. We provide a series of tail bounds on the distribution of the number of empty bins. These tail bounds should find application in randomized algorithms and probabilistic analysis. Our motivating application is the following well-known conjecture on threshold phenomenon for the satisfiability problem. Consider random 3-SAT formulas with cn clauses over n variables, where each clause is chosen uniformly and independently from the space of all clauses of size 3. It has been conjectured that there is a sharp threshold for satisfiability at c* ≈? 4.2. We provide a strong upper bound on the value of c*, showing that for c > 4.758 a random 3-SAT formula is unsatisfiable with high probability. This result is based on a structural property, possibly of independent interest, whose proof needs several applications of the occupancy tail bounds.  相似文献

Experiments on solvingr-SAT random formulae have provided evidence of a satisfiability threshold phenomenon with respect to the ratio of the number of clauses to the number of variables of formulae. Presently, only the threshold of 2-SAT formulae has been proved to exist and has been computed to be equal to 1. For 3-SAT formulae and more generally forr-SAT formulae, lower and upper bounds of the threshold have been established. The best established bounds concern 3-SAT. For an observed threshold of about 4.25, the best lower bound is 3.003 and the best upper bound 4.76. In this paper we establish a general upper bound of the threshold forr-SAT formulae giving a value for 3-SAT of 4.64, significantly improving the previous best upper bound. For this we have defined a more restrictive structure than a satisfying truth assignment for characterizing the satisfiability of a SAT formula which we have called negatively prime solution (NPS). By merely applying the first moment method to negatively prime solutions of a randomr-SAT formula we obtain our bound.  相似文献

This paper deals with an extension of energetic reasoning, using some efficient lower bounds of the bin-packing problem, to get tight lower bounds for the P|r i , q i |C max. The link between P||C max and bin-packing problem is well-known. Our purpose is to extend the use of efficient lower bounds of the bin-packing problem to P|r i , q i |C max. We focus on some time-intervals, to compute the mandatory parts of activities within this time-interval and then to deduce an associated bin-packing instance. Thus, lower bounds of the bin-packing problem are used to get new satisfiability tests for the parallel machine problem. We also propose to extend the classical time-bound adjustments of release dates and deadlines to efficiently use bin-packing lower bounds. Experimental results that prove the efficiency of our approach on several kind of instances are reported.  相似文献

This paper studies the global optimization of polynomial programming problems using Reformulation-Linearization Technique (RLT)-based linear programming (LP) relaxations. We introduce a new class of bound-grid-factor constraints that can be judiciously used to augment the basic RLT relaxations in order to improve the quality of lower bounds and enhance the performance of global branch-and-bound algorithms. Certain theoretical properties are established that shed light on the effect of these valid inequalities in driving the discrepancies between RLT variables and their associated nonlinear products to zero. To preserve computational expediency while promoting efficiency, we propose certain concurrent and sequential cut generation routines and various grid-factor selection rules. The results indicate a significant tightening of lower bounds, which yields an overall reduction in computational effort for solving a test-bed of polynomial programming problems to global optimality in comparison with the basic RLT procedure as well as the commercial software BARON.  相似文献

We formulate the resource-constrained project scheduling problem as a satisfiability problem and adapt a satisfiability solver for the specific domain of the problem. Our solver is lightweight and shows good performance both in finding feasible solutions and in proving lower bounds. Our numerical tests allowed us to close several benchmark instances of the RCPSP that have never been closed before by proving tighter lower bounds and by finding better feasible solutions. Using our method we solve optimally more instances of medium and large size from the benchmark library PSPLIB and do it faster compared to any other existing solver.  相似文献

We study two natural models of randomly generated constraint satisfaction problems. We determine how quickly the domain size must grow with n to ensure that these models are robust in the sense that they exhibit a non‐trivial threshold of satisfiability, and we determine the asymptotic order of that threshold. We also provide resolution complexity lower bounds for these models. One of our results immediately yields a theorem regarding homomorphisms between two random graphs. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We study the intrinsic difficulty of solving linear parabolic initial-value problems numerically at a single point. We present a worst-case analysis for deterministic as well as for randomized (or Monte Carlo) algorithms, assuming that the drift coefficients and the potential vary in given function spaces. We use fundamental solutions (parametrix method) for equations with unbounded coefficients to relate the initial-value problem to multivariate integration and weighted approximation problems. Hereby we derive lower and upper bounds for the minimal errors. The upper bounds are achieved by algorithms that use Smolyak formulas and, in the randomized case, variance reduction. We apply our general results to equations with coefficients from Hölder classes, and here, in many cases, the upper and lower bounds almost coincide and our algorithms are almost optimal.  相似文献

We consider the basic Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) in which a fleet ofM identical vehicles stationed at a central depot is to be optimally routed to supply customers with known demands subject only to vehicle capacity constraints. In this paper, we present an exact algorithm for solving the VRP that uses lower bounds obtained from a combination of two relaxations of the original problem which are based on the computation ofq-paths andk-shortest paths. A set of reduction tests derived from the computation of these bounds is applied to reduce the size of the problem and to improve the quality of the bounds. The resulting lower bounds are then embedded into a tree-search procedure to solve the problem optimally. Computational results are presented for a number of problems taken from the literature. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in solving problems involving up to about 50 customers and in providing tight lower bounds for problems up to about 150 customers.  相似文献

We study the performance of the dgsol code for the solution of distance geometry problems with lower and upper bounds on distance constraints. The dgsol code uses only a sparse set of distance constraints, while other algorithms tend to work with a dense set of constraints either by imposing additional bounds or by deducing bounds from the given bounds. Our computational results show that protein structures can be determined by solving a distance geometry problem with dgsol and that the approach based on dgsol is significantly more reliable and efficient than multi-starts with an optimization code.  相似文献

In this paper the behaviour of the gradient projection method for the Quadratic Programming problems with M-Matrices and lower bounds on variables is analysed. It is shown that the Chandbasekaran method for solving such problems is simply a realization of the Newton projection method if for the latter one the starting point has components equal to lower bounds on variables.  相似文献

The purpose of this article is to develop a branch-and-bound algorithm using duality bounds for the general quadratically-constrained quadratic programming problem and having the following properties: (i) duality bounds are computed by solving ordinary linear programs; (ii) they are at least as good as the lower bounds obtained by solving relaxed problems, in which each nonconvex function is replaced by its convex envelope; (iii) standard convergence properties of branch-and-bound algorithms for nonconvex global optimization problems are guaranteed. Numerical results of preliminary computational experiments for the case of one quadratic constraint are reported.  相似文献

A system of algebraic equations over a finite field is called sparse if each equation depends on a small number of variables. In this paper new deterministic algorithms for solving such equations are presented. The mathematical expectation of their running time is estimated. These estimates are at present the best theoretical bounds on the complexity of solving average instances of the above problem. In characteristic 2 the estimates are significantly lower the worst case bounds provided by SAT solvers.  相似文献

We survey recent algorithms for the propositional satisfiability problem. In particular, we consider algorithms having the best current worst-case upper bounds on their complexity. We also discuss some related issues: a derandomization of the algorithm of Paturi, Pudlák, Saks, and Zane, the Valiant–Vazirani lemma, and random walk algorithms with the back button. Nonlinear optimization algorithms are rarely discussed from a complexity point of view. Even the concept of solving nonlinear problems on digital computers is not well defined. The focus here is on a complexity approach for designing and analyzing algorithms for nonlinear optimization problems providing optimal solutions with prespecified accuracy in the solution space. We delineate the complexity status of convex problems over network constraints, dual of flow constraints, dual of multi-commodity, constraints defined by a submodular rank function (a generalized allocation problem), tree networks, diagonal dominant matrices, and nonlinear Knapsack problem's constraint. All these problems, except for the latter in integers, have polynomial time algorithms which may be viewed within a unifying framework of a proximity-scaling technique or a threshold technique. The complexity of many of these algorithms is furthermore best possible in that it matches lower bounds on the complexity of the respective problems. In general nonseparable optimization problems are shown to be considerably more difficult than separable problems. We compare the complexity of continuous versus discrete nonlinear problems and list some major open problems in the area of nonlinear optimization. MSC classification: 90C30, 68Q25  相似文献

The problem of scheduling in permutation flowshops is considered in this paper with the objectives of minimizing the sum of weighted flowtime/sum of weighted tardiness/sum of weighted flowtime and weighted tardiness/sum of weighted flowtime, weighted tardiness and weighted earliness of jobs, with each objective considered separately. Lower bounds on the given objective (corresponding to a node generated in the scheduling tree) are developed by solving an assignment problem. Branch-and-bound algorithms are developed to obtain the best permutation sequence in each case. Our algorithm incorporates a job-based lower bound (integrated with machine-based bounds) with respect to the weighted flowtime/weighted tardiness/weighted flowtime and weighted tardiness, and a machine-based lower bound with respect to the weighted earliness of jobs. The proposed algorithms are evaluated by solving many randomly generated problems of different problem sizes. The results of an extensive computational investigation for various problem sizes are presented. In addition, one of the proposed branch-and-bound algorithms is compared with a related existing branch-and-bound algorithm.  相似文献

We consider functional Boolean equations and the satisfiability problem for them, which amounts to the following: Does there exist a Boolean function satisfying a given functional equation? We establish upper and lower bounds for the complexity of the satisfiability problem for a system of functional Boolean equations. This justifies the impossibility of its solution by any method substantially simpler than the brute-force search.  相似文献

In this paper we analyze conjugate gradient-type algorithms for solving convex quadratic programs subject only to box constraints (i.e., lower and upper bounds on the variables). Programs of this type, which we denote by BQP, play an important role in many optimization models and algorithms. We propose a new class of finite algorithms based on a nonfinite heuristic for solving a large, sparse BQP. The numerical results suggest that these algorithms are competitive with Dembo and Tulowitzski's (1983) CRGP algorithm in general, and perform better than CRGP for problems that have a low percentage of free variables at optimality, and for problems with only nonnegativity constraints.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of finding large collections of vertices and edges satisfying particular separation properties in random regular graphs of degree r, for each fixed r ≥ 3. We prove both constructive lower bounds and combinatorial upper bounds on the maximal sizes of these sets. The lower bounds are proved by analyzing a class of algorithms that return feasible solutions for the given problems. The analysis uses the differential equation method proposed by Wormald [Lectures on Approximation and Randomized Algorithms, PWN, Wassaw, 1999, pp. 239–298]. The upper bounds are proved by direct combinatorial means. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random Struct. Alg., 2008  相似文献

The satisfiability problem in forms such as maximum satisfiability (MAX-SAT) remains a hard problem. The most successful approaches for solving such problems use a form of systematic tree search. This paper describes the use of a hybrid algorithm, combining genetic algorithms and integer programming branch and bound approaches, to solve MAX-SAT problems. Such problems are formulated as integer programs and solved by a hybrid algorithm implemented within standard mathematical programming software. Computational testing of the algorithm, which mixes heuristic and exact approaches, is described.  相似文献

In this article, our primary concern is the classical problem of minimizing globally a concave function over a compact polyhedron (Problem (P)). We present a new simplicial branch and bound approach, which combines triangulations of intersections of simplices with halfspaces and ideas from outer approximation in such a way, that a class of finite algorithms for solving (P) results. For arbitrary compact convex feasible sets one obtains a not necessarily finite but convergent algorithm. Theoretical investigations include determination of the number of simplices in each applied triangulation step and bounds on the number of iterations in the resulting algorithms. Preliminary numerical results are given, and additional applications are sketched.  相似文献
