This paper presents a new dual network simplex algorithm for the minimum cost network flow problem. The algorithm works directly on the original capacitated network and runs in O(mn(m +n logn) logn) time for the network withn nodes andm arcs. This complexity is better than the complexity of Orlin, Plotkin and Tardos’ (1993) dual network simplex algorithm by a factor ofm/n.  相似文献

We show how to use polynomial and strongly polynomial capacity scaling algorithms for the transshipment problem to design a polynomial dual network simplex pivot rule. Our best pivoting strategy leads to an O(m 2 logn) bound on the number of pivots, wheren andm denotes the number of nodes and arcs in the input network. Recently, É. Tardos gave a strongly polynomial algorithm for the minimum-cost circulation problem and solved the open problem posed in 1972 by J. Edmonds and R.M. Karp. Her algorithm runs in O(m 2 T(m, n) logm) time, wherem is the number of arcs,n is the number of vertices, andT(m, n) is the time required for solving a maximum flow problem in a network withm arcs andn vertices. In the present paper, taking an approach that is a dual of Tardos's, we also give a strongly polynomial algorithm for the minimum-cost circulation problem. Our algorithm runs in O(m 2 S(m, n) logm) time and reduces the computational complexity, whereS(m, n) is the time required for solving a shortest path problem with a fixed origin in a network withm arcs,n vertices, and a nonnegative arc length function. The complexity is the same as that of Orlin's algorithm, recently developed by efficiently implementing the Edmonds-Karp scaling algorithm.  相似文献

Strongly polynomial dual simplex methods for the maximum flow problem   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper presents dual network simplex algorithms that require at most 2nm pivots and O(n 2 m) time for solving a maximum flow problem on a network ofn nodes andm arcs. Refined implementations of these algorithms and a related simplex variant that is not strictly speaking a dual simplex algorithm are shown to have a complexity of O(n 3). The algorithms are based on the concept of apreflow and depend upon the use of node labels that are underestimates of the distances from the nodes to the sink node in the extended residual graph associated with the current flow. © 1998 The Mathematical Programming Society, Inc. Several pivot rules for the dual network simplex algorithm that enable it to solve a maximum flow problem on ann-node,m-arc network in at most 2nm pivots and O(n 2 m) time are presented. These rules are based on the concept of apreflow and depend upon the use of node labels which are either the lengths of a shortestpseudoaugmenting path from those nodes to the sink node orvalid underestimates of those lengths. Extended versions of our algorithms are shown to solve an important class of parametric maximum flow problems with no increase in the worst-case pivot and time bounds of these algorithms. Submodular flow problems, introduced by Edmonds and Giles [2], generalize network flow problems. Many algorithms for solving network flow problems have been generalized to submodular flow problems (cf. references in Fujishige [4]), e.g. the cycle canceling method of Klein [9]. For network flow problems, the choice of minimum-mean cycles in Goldberg and Tarjan [6], and the choice of minimum-ratio cycles in Wallacher [12] lead to polynomial cycle canceling methods. For submodular flow problems, Cui and Fujishige [1] show finiteness for the minimum-mean cycle method while Zimmermann [16] develops a pseudo-polynomial minimum ratio cycle method. Here, we prove pseudo-polynomiality of a larger class of the minimum-ratio variants and, by combining both methods, we develop a polynomial cycle canceling algorithm for submodular flow problems. We describe an O(n 4 hmin{logU,n 2logn}) capacity scaling algorithm for the minimum cost submodular flow problem. Our algorithm modifies and extends the Edmonds–Karp capacity scaling algorithm for minimum cost flow to solve the minimum cost submodular flow problem. The modification entails scaling a relaxation parameter δ. Capacities are relaxed by attaching a complete directed graph with uniform arc capacity δ in each scaling phase. We then modify a feasible submodular flow by relaxing the submodular constraints, so that complementary slackness is satisfied. This creates discrepancies between the boundary of the flow and the base polyhedron of a relaxed submodular function. To reduce these discrepancies, we use a variant of the successive shortest path algorithm that augments flow along minimum cost paths of residual capacity at least δ. The shortest augmenting path subroutine we use is a variant of Dijkstra’s algorithm modified to handle exchange capacity arcs efficiently. The result is a weakly polynomial time algorithm whose running time is better than any existing submodular flow algorithm when U is small and C is big. We also show how to use maximum mean cuts to make the algorithm strongly polynomial. The resulting algorithm is the first capacity scaling algorithm to match the current best strongly polynomial bound for submodular flow. The constrained maximum flow problem is to send the maximum flow from a source to a sink in a directed capacitated network where each arc has a cost and the total cost of the flow cannot exceed a budget. This problem is similar to some variants of classical problems such as the constrained shortest path problem, constrained transportation problem, or constrained assignment problem, all of which have important applications in practice. The constrained maximum flow problem itself has important applications, such as in logistics, telecommunications and computer networks. In this research, we present an efficient specialized network simplex algorithm that significantly outperforms the two widely used LP solvers: CPLEX and lp_solve. We report CPU times of an average of 27 times faster than CPLEX (with its dual simplex algorithm), the closest competitor of our algorithm.  相似文献

Developing a polynomial time primal network simplex algorithm for the minimum cost flow problem has been a long standing open problem. In this paper, we develop one such algorithm that runs in O(min(n 2m lognC, n 2m2 logn)) time, wheren is the number of nodes in the network,m is the number of arcs, andC denotes the maximum absolute arc costs if arc costs are integer and ∞ otherwise. We first introduce a pseudopolynomial variant of the network simplex algorithm called the “premultiplier algorithm”. We then develop a cost-scaling version of the premultiplier algorithm that solves the minimum cost flow problem in O(min(nm lognC, nm 2 logn)) pivots. With certain simple data structures, the average time per pivot can be shown to be O(n). We also show that the diameter of the network polytope is O(nm logn).  相似文献

A generalization of the maximum-flow problem is considered in which every unit of flow sent from the source to the sink yields a payoff of $k. In addition, the capacity of any arce can be increased at a per-unit cost of $c e . The problem is to determine how much arc capacity to purchase for each arc and how much flow to send so as to maximize the net profit. This problem can be modeled as a circulation problem. The main result of this paper is that this circulation problem can be solved by the network simplex method in at mostkmn pivots. Whenc e = 1 for each arce, this yields a strongly polynomial-time simplex method. In this paper the general equal flow problem is considered. This is a minimum cost network flow problem with additional side constraints requiring the flow of arcs in some given sets of arcs to take on the same value. This model can be applied to approach water resource system management problems or multiperiod logistic problems in general involving policy restrictions which require some arcs to carry the same amount of flow through the given study period. Although the bases of the general equal flow problem are no longer spanning trees, it is possible to recognize a similar structure that allows us to take advantage of the practical computational capabilities of network models. After characterizing the bases of the problem as good (r+1)-forests, a simplex primal algorithm is developed that exploits the network structure of the problem and requires only slight modifications of the well-known network simplex algorithm.  相似文献

For more than two machines, and when preemption is forbidden, the computation of minimum makespan schedules for the open-shop problem is NP-hard. Compared to the flow-shop and the job-shop, the open-shop has free job routes which lead to a much larger solution space, to smaller gaps between the optimal makespan and the lower bounds, and to disappointing results for the algorithms based on the disjunctive graph model. For instance, the best existing branch and bound method cannot solve some 7 ×7 hard instances to optimality, and all published metaheuristics (working by reversing some disjunctions already fixed) do not better than some greedy or steepest-descent heuristics which need a much smaller computational effort. In this context, the intrinsic parallelism of genetic algorithms (GAs) seems well adapted, for detecting global optima disseminated among many quasi-optimal schedules. This paper presents several GAs for the open-shop problem. It is shown that even simple and fast versions can compete with the best known heuristics and metaheuristics, thanks to two key-features: a population in which each individual has a distinct makespan, and a special procedure which reorders every new chromosome. Using problem-specific heuristics, it is possible to design more powerful GAs which give excellent results, even on the hardest benchmarks of the literature: for instance, all hard open instances from Taillard are broken, except one for which the best known solution is improved.  相似文献

The classical economic lot-sizing problem assumes that a single supplier and a single transportation mode are used to replenish the inventory. This paper studies an extension of this problem where several suppliers and transportation modes are available. The decision-making process in this case involves identifying (i) the timing for an order; (ii) the choice of shipment modes; and (iii) the order size for each mode. The problem is defined as a network flow problem with multiple setups cost function and additional side constraints. This study provides an MIP formulation for the problem. We also provide an additional formulation of the problem by redefining its decision variables and show that the dual of the corresponding LP-relaxation has a special structure. We take advantage of the structure of the dual problem to develop a primal–dual algorithm that generates tight lower and upper bounds. Computational results demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.  相似文献

It is shown that pseudomonotone and quasimonotone maps can be characterized by a first order property provided they are regular. This result extends the well known characterization of nonvanishing generalized monotone maps to an essentially larger class. The paper supplements a recent contribution by Crouzeix and Ferland (1996) and solves a related open problem concerning homogeneous excess demand functions which occur in general equilibrium theory. In this paper, we propose a non-interior continuation method for solving generalized linear complementarity problems (GLCP) introduced by Cottle and Dantzig. The method is based on a smoothing function derived from the exponential penalty function first introduced by Kort and Bertsekas for constrained minimization. This smoothing function can also be viewed as a natural extension of Chen-Mangasarian’s neural network smooth function. By using the smoothing function, we approximate GLCP as a family of parameterized smooth equations. An algorithm is presented to follow the smoothing path. Under suitable assumptions, it is shown that the algorithm is globally convergent and local Q-quadratically convergent. Few preliminary numerical results are also reported.
