Summary. We derive a posteriori error estimators for convection-diffusion equations with dominant convection. The estimators yield global upper and local lower bounds on the error measured in the energy norm such that the ratio of the upper and lower bounds only depends on the local mesh-Peclet number. The estimators are either based on the evaluation of local residuals or on the solution of discrete local Dirichlet or Neumann problems. We describe an adaptive mesh refinement finite element method-of-lines procedure for solving one-dimensional parabolic partial differential equations. Solutions are calculated using Galerkin's method with a piecewise hierarchical polynomial basis in space and singly implicit Runge-Kutta (SIRK) methods in time. A modified SIRK formulation eliminates a linear systems solution that is required by the traditional SIRK formulation and leads to a new reduced-order interpolation formula. Stability and temporal error estimation techniques allow acceptance of approximate solutions at intermediate stages, yielding increased efficiency when solving partial differential equations. A priori energy estimates of the local discretization error are obtained for a nonlinear scalar problem. A posteriori estimates of local spatial discretization errors, obtained by order variation, are used with the a priori error estimates to control the adaptive mesh refinement strategy. Computational results suggest convergence of the a posteriori error estimate to the exact discretization error and verify the utility of the adaptive technique. This research was partially supported by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Air Force Systems Command, USAF, under Grant Number AFOSR-90-0194; the U.S. Army Research Office under Contract Number DAAL 03-91-G-0215; by the National Science Foundation under Grant Number CDA-8805910; and by a grant from the Committee on Research, Tulane University.  相似文献

In actual practice, iteration methods applied to the solution of finite systems of equations yield inconclusive results as to the existence or nonexistence of solutions and the accuracy of any approximate solutions obtained. On the other hand, construction of interval extensions of ordinary iteration operators permits one to carry out interval iteration computationally, with results which can give rigorous guarantees of existence or nonexistence of solutions, and error bounds for approximate solutions. Examples are given of the solution of a nonlinear system of equations and the calculation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix by interval iteration. Several ways to obtain lower and upper bounds for eigenvalues are given.Sponsored by the United States Army under Contract No. DAAG29-80-C-0041.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a simple, and yet powerful and easily applicable scheme in constructing the Newton-like iteration formulae for the computation of the solutions of nonlinear equations. The new scheme is based on the homotopy analysis method applied to equations in general form equivalent to the nonlinear equations. It provides a tool to develop new Newton-like iteration methods or to improve the existing iteration methods which contains the well-known Newton iteration formula in logic; those all improve the Newton method. The orders of convergence and corresponding error equations of the obtained iteration formulae are derived analytically or with the help of Maple. Some numerical tests are given to support the theory developed in this paper.  相似文献

The maximum norm error estimates of the Galerkin finite element approximations to the solutions of differential and integro-differential multi-dimensional parabolic problems are considered. Our method is based on the use of the discrete version of the elliptic-Sobolev inequality and some operator representations of the finite element solutions. The results of the present paper lead to the error estimates of optimal or almost optimal order for the case of simplicial Lagrangian piecewise polynomial elements.  相似文献

This paper deals with a posteriori error estimates for advection–reaction–diffusion equations. In particular, error estimators based on the solution of local problems are derived for a stabilized finite element method. These estimators are proved to be equivalent to the error, with equivalence constants eventually depending on the physical parameters. Numerical experiments illustrating the performance of this approach are reported.  相似文献

We consider Quadratic Spline Collocation (QSC) methods for linear second order elliptic Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). The standard formulation of these methods leads to non-optimal approximations. In order to derive optimal QSC approximations, high order perturbations of the PDE problem are generated. These perturbations can be applied either to the PDE problem operators or to the right sides, thus leading to two different formulations of optimal QSC methods. The convergence properties of the QSC methods are studied. OptimalO(h 3–j ) global error estimates for thejth partial derivative are obtained for a certain class of problems. Moreover,O(h 4–j ) error bounds for thejth partial derivative are obtained at certain sets of points. Results from numerical experiments verify the theoretical behaviour of the QSC methods. Performance results also show that the QSC methods are very effective from the computational point of view. They have been implemented efficiently on parallel machines. This research was supported in part by David Ross Foundation (U.S.A) and NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada).  相似文献

Discretization and simulation of stochastic differential equations   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We discuss both pathwise and mean-square convergence of several approximation schemes to stochastic differential equations. We then estimate the corresponding speeds of convergence, the error being either the mean square error or the error induced by the approximation on the value of the expectation of a functional of the solution. We finally give and comment on a few comparative simulation results.  相似文献

In this paper we present local a-posteriori error indicators for the Galerkin discretization of boundary integral equations. These error indicators are introduced and investigated by Babuška-Rheinboldt [3] for finite element methods. We transfer them from finite element methods onto boundary element methods and show that they are reliable and efficient for a wide class of integral operators under relatively weak assumptions. These local error indicators are based on the computable residual and can be used for controlling the adaptive mesh refinement. In this paper we analyze a characteristic finite element approximation of convex optimal control problems governed by linear convection-dominated diffusion equations with pointwise inequality constraints on the control variable, where the state and co-state variables are discretized by piecewise linear continuous functions and the control variable is approximated by either piecewise constant functions or piecewise linear discontinuous functions. A priori error estimates are derived for the state, co-state and the control. Numerical examples are given to show the efficiency of the characteristic finite element method.  相似文献

In the current paper, we study the convergence properties of the DGFE approximation of optimal control problem governed by convection-diffusion equations. We derive a posteriori error estimates and a priori error estimates for both the states, ad-joint and the control variable approximation. For the optimal control problem, these estimates are apparently not available in the literature.  相似文献

In many applications, partial differential equations depend on parameters which are only approximately known. Using tools from functional analysis and global optimization, methods are presented for obtaining certificates for rigorous and realistic error bounds on the solution of linear elliptic partial differential equations in arbitrary domains, either in an energy norm, or of key functionals of the solutions, given an approximate solution. Uncertainty in the parameters specifying the partial differential equations can be taken into account, either in a worst case setting, or given limited probabilistic information in terms of clouds.  相似文献

Summary. I derive a posteriori error estimates for two-point boundary value problems and parabolic equations in one dimension based on interpolation error estimates. The interpolation error estimates are obtained from an extension of the error formula for the Lagrange interpolating polynomial in the case of symmetrically-spaced interpolation points. From this formula pointwise and seminorm a priori estimates of the interpolation error are derived. The interpolant in conjunction with the a priori estimates is used to obtain asymptotically exact a posteriori error estimates of the interpolation error. These a posteriori error estimates are extended to linear two-point boundary problems and parabolic equations. Computational results demonstrate the convergence of a posteriori error estimates and their effectiveness when combined with an hp-adaptive code for solving parabolic systems. Summary In this paper, methods for numerical verifications of solutions for elliptic equations in nonconvex polygonal domains are studied. In order to verify solutions using computer, it is necessary to determine some constants which appear in a priori error estimations. We propose some methods for determination of these constants. In numerical examples, calculating these constants for anL-shaped domain, we verify the solution of a nonlinear elliptic equation.  相似文献

Runge–Kutta based convolution quadrature methods for abstract, well-posed, linear, and homogeneous Volterra equations, non necessarily of sectorial type, are developed. A general representation of the numerical solution in terms of the continuous one is given. The error and stability analysis is based on this representation, which, for the particular case of the backward Euler method, also shows that the numerical solution inherits some interesting qualitative properties, such as positivity, of the exact solution. Numerical illustrations are provided.  相似文献

Unconditionally stable explicit methods for parabolic equations   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary This paper discussesrational Runge-Kutta methods for stiff differential equations of high dimensions. These methods are explicit and in addition do not require the computation or storage of the Jacobian. A stability analysis (based onn-dimensional linear equations) is given. A second orderA 0-stable method with embedded error control is constructed and numerical results of stiff problems originating from linear and nonlinear parabolic equations are presented.  相似文献

A Gautschi-type method for oscillatory second-order differential equations   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary. We study a numerical method for second-order differential equations in which high-frequency oscillations are generated by a linear part. For example, semilinear wave equations are of this type. The numerical scheme is based on the requirement that it solves linear problems with constant inhomogeneity exactly. We prove that the method admits second-order error bounds which are independent of the product of the step size with the frequencies. Our analysis also provides new insight into the m ollified impulse method of García-Archilla, Sanz-Serna, and Skeel. We include results of numerical experiments with the sine-Gordon equation. Summary We present an a posteriori error estimator for the non-conforming Crouzeix-Raviart discretization of the Stokes equations which is based on the local evaluation of residuals with respect to the strong form of the differential equation. The error estimator yields global upper and local lower bounds for the error of the finite element solution. It can easily be generalized to the stationary, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and to other non-conforming finite element methods. Numerical examples show the efficiency of the proposed error estimator.  相似文献

Summary In this first of two papers, computable a posteriori estimates of the space discretization error in the finite element method of lines solution of parabolic equations are analyzed for time-independent space meshes. The effectiveness of the error estimator is related to conditions on the solution regularity, mesh family type, and asymptotic range for the mesh size. For clarity the results are limited to a model problem in which piecewise linear elements in one space dimension are used. The results extend straight-forwardly to systems of equations and higher order elements in one space dimension, while the higher dimensional case requires additional considerations. The theory presented here provides the basis for the analysis and adaptive construction of time-dependent space meshes, which is the subject of the second paper. Computational results show that the approach is practically very effective and suggest that it can be used for solving more general problems. The work was partially supported by ONR Contract N00014-77-C-0623  相似文献

We report a new parallel iterative algorithm for semi-linear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) by combining a kind of waveform relaxation (WR) techniques into the classical parareal algorithm. The parallelism can be simultaneously exploited by WR and parareal in different directions. We provide sharp error estimations for the new algorithm on bounded time domain and on unbounded time domain, respectively. The iterations of the parareal and the WR are balanced to optimize the performance of the algorithm. Furthermore, the speedup and the parallel efficiency of the new approach are analyzed. Numerical experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the theoretic work.  相似文献
