Mixed convection heat transfer in rectangular channels has been investigated experimentally under various operating conditions. The lower surface of the channel is subjected to a uniform heat flux, sidewalls are insulated and adiabatic, and the upper surface is exposed to the surrounding fluid. Experiments were conducted for Pr=0.7, aspect ratios AR=5 and 10, inclination angles 0° ≤ θ ≤ 30°, Reynolds numbers 50 ≤ Re ≤ 1000, and modified Grashof numbers Gr*=7.0 × 105 to 4.0 × 107. From the parametric study, local Nusselt number distributions were obtained and effects of channel inclination, surface heat flux and Reynolds number on the onset of instability were investigated. Results related to the buoyancy affected secondary flow and the onset of instability have been discussed. Some of the results obtained from the experimental measurements are also compared with the literature, and a good agreement was observed. The onset of instability was found to move upstream for increasing Grashof number and increasing aspect ratio. On the other hand, onset of instability was delayed for increasing Reynolds number and increasing inclination angle. Received on 19 March 2001 / Published online: 29 November 2001  相似文献

Mixed convection heat transfer has been studied in vertical channels, open at the bottom and top, with protruding discrete heaters installed on one side. The flow is assumed to be steady, laminar and two-dimensional. The Boussinesq approximation is used to account for the density variation. Non-dimensional equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy, with the Boussinesq approximation are solved using the SIMPLER method. Heat transfer through the top and the right are calculated as functions of the Rayleigh number (0≤Ra≤107), the Reynolds number (0≤Re≤200), various aspect ratios (1≤A≤6). The effect of the entrance and exit lengths and that of the position of the electronic components in the channel are also examined. Flow and temperature fields for various cases are produced, and the temperature variations in the electronic components are calculated. Received on 2 March 1998  相似文献

The present article reports on heat transfer characteristics associated with multiple laminar impinging air jet cooling a hot flat plat at different orientations. The work aims to study the interactions of the effects of cross flow, buoyancy induced flow, orientation of the hot surface with respect to gravity, Reynolds numbers and Rayleigh numbers on heat transfer characteristics. Experiments have been carried out for different values of jet Reynolds number, Rayleigh number and cross flow strength and at different orientations of the air jet with respect to the target hot plate. In general, the effective cooling of the plate has been observed to be increased with increasing Reynolds number and Rayleigh number. The results concluded that the hot surface orientation is important for optimum performance in practical applications. It was found that for Re ≥ 400 and Ra ≥ 10,000 (these ranges give 0.0142 ≤ Ri ≤ 1.59 the Nusselt number is independent on the hot surface orientation. However, for Re ≤ 300 and Ra ≥ 100,000 (these ranges give 1.59 ≤ Ri ≤ 42.85): (i) the Nusselt number for horizontal orientation with hot surface facing down is less that that of vertical orientation and that of horizontal orientation with hot surface facing up, and (ii) the Nusselt number of vertical orientation is approximately the same as that of horizontal orientation with hot surface facing up. For all surfaces orientations and for the entire ranges of Re and Ra, it was found that increasing the cross flow strength decreases the effective cooling of the surface.  相似文献

A numerical investigation was conducted into channel flows with a tandem of transverse vortex generators in the form of rectangular cylinders. The oscillatory behavior of the flow is studied. Data for heat transfer and flow losses are presented for 100≤Re≤400 and cylinder separation distances 1≤S/H≤4. The results are obtained by numerical solution of the full Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation. Self-sustained flow oscillations are found for Re>100. Alternate and dynamic shedding of large vortex structures from the cylinders is observed by visualization of the numerically determined flow field. A heat transfer enhancement up to a factor 1.78 compared to plane channel flow is observed. Received on 16 July 1997  相似文献

We study flow and heat transfer to a cylinder in cross flow at Re = 3,900–80,000 by means of three-dimensional transient RANS (T-RANS) simulations, employing an RNG k − ε turbulence model. Both the case of a bare solid cylinder and that of a solid cylinder surrounded at some fixed distance by a thin porous layer have been studied. The latter configuration is a standard test geometry for measuring the insulating and protective performance of garments. In this geometry, the flow in the space between the solid cylinder and the porous layer is laminar but periodic, whereas the outer flow is transitional and characterized by vortex shedding in the wake of the cylinder. The results from the T-RANS simulations are validated against data from Direct Numerical Simulations and experiments. It is found that T-RANS is very well suited for simulating this type of flow. The transient nature of the flow underneath the porous layer is well reproduced, as well as the influence of vortex shedding on the heat transfer in the downstream stagnation zone. T-RANS results are found to be in much better agreement with DNS and experimental data than results from steady-state RANS.  相似文献

Influence of unsteady wake on a turbulent separation bubble   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An experimental study was made of turbulent separated and reattaching flow over a blunt body, where unsteady wake was generated by a spoked-wheel type of wake generator with cylindrical rods. The influence of unsteady wake was scrutinized by altering the rotation direction (clockwise and counter-clockwise) and the normalized passing frequency (0 ≤ St H  ≤ 0.20). The Reynolds number based on the cylindrical rod was Re d =375. A phase-averaging technique was employed to characterize the unsteady wake. The effect of different rotation directions, which gave a significant reduction of x R , was examined in detail. The wall pressure fluctuations on the blunt body were analyzed in terms of the spectrum and the coherence. Received: 15 January 2001 / Accepted: 17 July 2001  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted of incompressible, moderate Reynolds number flow of air over heated rectangular blocks in a two-dimensional, horizontal channel. Holographic interferometry combined with high-speed cinematography was used to visualize the unsteady temperature fields in self- sustained oscillatory flow. Experiments were conducted in the laminar, transitional and turbulent flow regimes for Reynolds numbers in the range from Re = 520 to Re = 6600. Interferometric measurements were obtained in the thermally and fluiddynamically periodically fully developed flow region on the ninth heated block. Flow oscillations were first observed between Re = 1054 and Re = 1318. The period of oscillations, wavelength and propagation speed of the Tollmien–Schlichting waves in the main channel were measured at two characteristic flow velocities, Re = 1580 and Re = 2370. For these Reynolds numbers it was observed that two to three waves span one geometric periodicity length. At Re = 1580 the dominant oscillation frequency was found to be around 26 Hz and at Re = 2370 the frequency distribution formed a band around 125 Hz. Results regarding heat transfer and pressure drop are presented as a function of the Reynolds number, in terms of the block-average Nusselt number and the local Nusselt number as well as the friction factor. Measurements of the local Nusselt number together with visual observations indicate that the lateral mixing caused by flow instabilities is most pronounced along the upstream vertical wall of the heated block in the groove region, and it is accompanied by high heat transfer coefficients. At Reynolds numbers beyond the onset of oscillations the heat transfer in the grooved channel exceeds the performance of the reference geometry, the asymmetrically heated parallel plate channel. A specially constructed hot-wire probe was used to obtain very near-wall velocity measurements in both a fully developed turbulent channel flow and flat plate boundary layer flow. The near-wall hot-wire probe, having been calibrated in a specially constructed laminar flow calibration rig, was used to measure the mean streamwise velocity profile, distributions of streamwise and spanwise intensities of turbulence and turbulence kinetic energy k in the viscous sublayer and beyond; these distributions compare very favorably with available DNS results obtained for channel flow. While low Reynolds number effects were clearly evident for the channel flow, these effects are much less distinct for the boundary layer flow. By assuming the dissipating range of eddy sizes to be statistically isotropic and the validity of Taylor's hypothesis, the dissipation rate ɛ iso in the very near-wall viscous sublayer region and beyond was determined for both the channel and boundary layer flows. It was found that if the convective velocity U c in Taylor's hypothesis was assumed to be equal to the mean velocity  at the point of measurement, the value of (ɛ+ iso)1 thus obtained agrees well with that of (ɛ +)DNS for y + ≥ 80 for channel flow; this suggests the validity of assuming U c= and local isotropy for large values of y +. However, if U c was assumed to be 10.6u τ , the value of (ɛ+ iso)2 thus obtained was found to compare reasonably well with the distribution of (ɛ+ iso)DNS for y +≤ 15.  Results of a comparative evaluation of three heat transfer enhancement strategies for forced convection cooling of a parallel plate channel populated with heated blocks, representing electronic components mounted on printed circuit boards, are reported. Heat transfer in the reference geometry, the asymmetrically heated parallel plate channel, is compared with that for the basic grooved channel, and the same geometry enhanced by cylinders and vanes placed above the downstream edge of each heated block. In addition to conventional heat transfer and pressure drop measurements, holographic interferometry combined with high-speed cinematography was used to visualize the unsteady temperature fields in the self-sustained oscillatory flow. The locations of increased heat transfer within one channel periodicity depend on the enhancement technique applied, and were identified by analyzing the unsteady temperature distributions visualized by holographic interferometry. This approach allowed gaining insight into the mechanisms responsible for heat transfer enhancement. Experiments were conducted at moderate flow velocities in the laminar, transitional and turbulent flow regimes. Reynolds numbers were varied in the range Re = 200–6500, corresponding to flow velocities from 0.076 to 2.36 m/s. Flow oscillations were first observed between Re = 1050 and 1320 for the basic grooved channel, and around Re = 350 and 450 for the grooved channels equipped with cylinders and vanes, respectively. At Reynolds numbers above the onset of oscillations and in the transitional flow regime, heat transfer rates in the investigated grooved channels exceeded the performance of the reference geometry, the asymmetrically heated parallel plate channel. Heat transfer in the grooved channels enhanced with cylinders and vanes showed an increase by a factor of 1.2–1.8 and 1.5–3.5, respectively, when compared to data obtained for the basic grooved channel; however, the accompanying pressure drop penalties also increased significantly. The effects of exit-wedge angle on evolution, formation, pinch-off, propagation and diffusive mass entrainment of vortex rings in air were studied using digital particle image velocimetry. Vortex rings were generated by passing a solenoid-valve-controlled air jet through a cylindrical nozzle. Experiments were performed over a wide range of exit-wedge angles (10° ≤ α ≤ 90°) of the cylindrical nozzle, initial Reynolds numbers (450 ≤ Re ≤ 4,580) and length-to-diameter ratios (0.9 ≤ L/D ≤ 11) of the air jet. For sharp edges (α ≤ 10°), a secondary ring may emerge at high Reynolds numbers, which tended to distort the vortex ring if ingested into it. For blunt edges (α ≥ 45°), by contrast, stable vortex rings were produced. The formation phase of a vortex ring was found to be closely related to its evolution pattern. An exit-wedge angle of 45° was found to be optimal for rapid pinch-off and faster propagation and better stability of a vortex ring. Diffusive mass entrainment was found to be between 35% and 40% in the early stages of a vortex ring propagation and it gradually increased throughout the course of vortex ring propagation. Entrainment fraction was found to be sensitive to the L/D ratio of the initial jet and decreases when the L/D ratio is increased.  相似文献

The effect of uniform suction on the steady two-dimensional laminar forced flow of a viscous incompressible fluid of temperature dependent viscosity past a wedge with uniform surface heat flux is considered. The governing equations for the flow are obtained by using suitable transformations and are solved by using an implicit finite difference method. Perturbation solutions are also obtained near the leading edge and in the downstream regime. The results are obtained in terms of the local skin friction coefficient and the rate of heat transfer for various values of the pertinent parameters, such as the Prandtl number, Pr, the velocity gradient parameter, m, the local suction parameter, ξ, and the viscosity variation parameter, ɛ. Perturbation solutions are compared with the finite difference solutions and are found to be in excellent agreement. The effect of ξ, m and ɛ on the dimensionless velocity profiles and viscosity distribution are also presented graphically for Pr = 0.7 and 7.0, which are the appropriate values for gases and water respectively. Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a cubical cavity with adiabatic or conductive sidewalls is experimentally analyzed at moderate Rayleigh numbers (Ra ≤ 8 × 104) using silicone oil (Pr=130) as the convecting fluid. Under these conditions the flow is steady and laminar. Three single-roll-type structures and an unstable toroidal roll have been observed inside the cavity with nearly adiabatic sidewalls. The sequence from the conductive state consists of a toroidal roll that evolves to a diagonally oriented single roll with increasing Rayleigh number. This diagonal roll, which is stabilized by the effect of the small but finite conductivity of the walls, shifts its axis of rotation towards to two opposite walls, and back to the diagonal orientation to allow for the increase in circulation that occurs as the Rayleigh number is further increased. Conduction at the sidewalls modifies this sequence in the sense that the two initial single rolls finally evolve into a four-roll structure. Once formed, this four-roll structure remains stable when decreasing the Rayleigh number until the initial single diagonally oriented roll is again recovered. The topology and the velocity fields of all structures, characterized with visualization and particle image velocimetry, respectively, are in good agreement with numerical results reported previously for the cavity with adiabatic walls, as well as with the numerical predictions obtained in the present study for perfectly conducting lateral walls. Conjugate mixed convection heat and mass transfer in brick drying   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this study, a numerical methodology for the solution of conjugate heat and mass transfer problem is presented. Fluid flow, heat and mass transfer over a rectangular brick due to transient laminar mixed convection has been numerically simulated. The coupled non-linear partial differential equations, for both gas phase and solid are solved using finite element procedure. Flow is assumed to be incompressible, two-dimensional, laminar. Analysis has been carried out at a Reynolds number of 200 with Pr = 0.71. The effect of buoyancy on the brick drying has been investigated. Velocity vectors, streamlines in the flow field and temperature and moisture contours and temperature distribution along the solid surface are presented. It is observed that there is considerable effect of buoyancy during drying. The results indicate a non-uniform drying of the brick with the leading edge drying faster than the rest of the brick. This study investigates the enhancement of the laminar forced convection characteristics of backward-facing step flow in a two-dimensional channel through the installation of solid and slotted baffles onto the channel wall. The effects of the height of baffle H b, inclination of baffle installation ϕb, height of slot in baffle H t, inclination of slot in baffle ϕt, and distance between the backward-facing step and baffle D on the flow structure, temperature distribution and Nusselt number variation for the system at various Re are numerically explored. Results show that a slotted baffle can enhance the average Nusselt number for the heating section of channel plate by the maximum 190% when Pr=0.7, H s=0.5, L=5, H b ≤ 0.3, W b ≤ 0.2, 0.1 ≤ D ≤ 0.5, 0° ≤ ϕb ≤ 45°, H t ≤ 0.1, 0° ≤ ϕt ≤ 45° and 50 ≤ Re ≤ 400. As for the solid baffle, the enhancement may be up by 230%. The solid baffle might cause the re-separation of main stream, and consequently result in poor local heat transfer coefficient in the end region of heating section. This disadvantage can be obviously improved as the baffle is slotted. Besides the penalty of increase in pressure drop due to the baffle installation is much higher for the situation with solid baffle.  相似文献

A supersonic exhaust plume test rig and a Rayleigh scattering system were developed. Molecular number densities in the supersonic high-temperature exhaust plume with and without an annular base flow were investigated. The physical meaning of the inferred mean temperature from the number density measurement in turbulent flows is clarified. For both flows, the potential core extends up to about six nozzle diameters, and self-similarity of the radial density distributions is observed at downstream sections Z/d=10–50. The recovery of the flow density deficit (or the decay of temperature) with the annular flow is faster than that without the annular flow at upstream sections Z/d ≤ 10. Rheological and mechanical properties of aqueous mono-disperse silica suspensions (Ludox? HS40) are investigated as a function of particle volume fraction (ϕ p ranging from 0.22 to 0.51) and water content, using shear rate tests, oscillatory methods, indentation and an ultrasonic technique. As the samples are progressively dried, four regimes are identified; they are related to the increasing particle content and the existence and behaviour of the electrical double layer (EDL) around each particle. For 0.22 ≤ ϕ p ≤ 0.30), the suspensions are stable due to the strong electrostatic repulsion between particles and show Newtonian behaviour (I). As water is removed, the solution pH decreases and the ionic strength increases. The EDL thickness therefore slowly decreases, and screening of the electrostatic repulsion increases. For 0.31 ≤ ϕ p ≤ 0.35, the suspensions become turbid and exhibit viscoelastic (VE) shear thinning behaviour (II), as they progressively flocculate. For 0.35 ≤ ϕ p ≤ 0.47, the suspensions turn transparent again and paste-like, with VE shear thinning behaviour and high elastic modulus (III). At higher particle concentration, the suspensions undergo a glass transition and behave as an elastic brittle solid (IV, ϕ p = 0.51).  相似文献

The instability of a pressure-induced laminar separation bubble is examined experimentally on an axisymmetric diffuser for a Reynolds number range 7,800 ≤ ≤ 11,400 for an inlet pipe diameter D 1 (50 mm) and as mean input flow velocity 4.2 m/s ≤ u m ≤ 6.1 m/s. A characterization of the base flow shows a wide-spread separation at the smooth diverging contour which gives rise to a massive amplification of instabilities. Controlled disturbances are introduced by means of a slot and a membrane actuator to trigger the transition, and the receptivity of the perturbations to the laminar boundary layer is evaluated. Different axisymmetric and azimuthal disturbances are applied in order to study their influence on the laminar–turbulent transition. The measurements show a clear dependence of the transition scenario and the reattachment length on the actuation mode.  相似文献

In the present study laminar transition to oscillatory convection of fluids having different Prandtl numbers in a laterally heated vertical cylindrical enclosure for different aspect ratios (melt height to crucible radius) of 2–4 is investigated numerically for 0.01 ≤ Pr ≤ 10. Numerical solution to two-dimensional axisymmetric transient Navier Stokes equations and energy equation were solved by finite volume method using SIMPLE algorithm. Numerical results illustrate that there exists a critical Rayleigh number for each Prandtl number beyond which sustained laminar oscillatory flow sets in. The oscillatory regime was characterised by the oscillation of the average kinetic energy and average thermal energy of the melt. For a given aspect ratio, critical Rayleigh number increases with Pr upto 1 and then flattens. It was observed that for low Prandtl number fluids, Pr < 1.0, critical Rayleigh number is found to increase with increase in aspect ratio while for high Prandtl number fluids, Pr ≥ 1.0, it is found to decrease with increase in aspect ratio. The influence of aspect ratio on the transient behaviour of the melt volume below and above the critical Rayleigh number was studied.  相似文献

The character of transitional capillary flow is investigated using pressure-drop measurements and instantaneous velocity fields acquired by microscopic PIV in the streamwise–wall-normal plane of a 536 μm capillary over the Reynolds-number range 1,800 ≤ Re ≤ 3,400 in increments of 100. The pressure-drop measurements reveal a deviation from laminar behavior at Re = 1,900 with the differences between the measured and the predicted laminar-flow pressure drop increasing with increasing Re. These observations are consistent with the characteristics of the mean velocity profiles which begin to deviate from the parabolic laminar profile at Re = 1,900, interpreted as the onset of transition, by becoming increasingly flatter and fuller with increasing Re. A fully-turbulent state is attained at Re ≅ 3,400 where the mean velocity profile collapses onto the mean profile of fully-developed turbulent pipe flow from an existing direct numerical simulation at Re = 5,300. Examination of the instantaneous velocity fields acquired by micro-PIV in the range 1,900 ≤ Re < 3,400 reveal that transitional flows at the microscale are composed of a subset of velocity fields illustrating a purely laminar behavior and a subset of fields that capture significant departure from laminar behavior. The fraction of velocity fields displaying non-laminar behavior increases with increasing Re, consistent with past observations of a growing number of intermittent turbulent spots bounded by nominally laminar flow in macroscale pipe flow with increasing Re. Instantaneous velocity fields that are non-laminar in character consistently contain multiple spanwise vortices that appear to streamwise-align to form larger-scale interfaces that incline slightly away from the wall. The characteristics of these “trains” of vortices are reminiscent of the spatial features of hairpin-like vortices and hairpin vortex packets often observed in fully-turbulent wall-bounded flow at both the macro- and micro-scales. Finally, single-point statistics computed from the non-laminar subsets at each transitional Re, including root-mean-square velocities and the Reynolds shear stress, reveal a gradual and smooth maturation of the patches of disordered motion toward a fully-turbulent state with increasing Re.  相似文献
