Approximation algorithms for scheduling unrelated parallel machines   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
We consider the following scheduling problem. There arem parallel machines andn independent jobs. Each job is to be assigned to one of the machines. The processing of jobj on machinei requires timep ij . The objective is to find a schedule that minimizes the makespan.Our main result is a polynomial algorithm which constructs a schedule that is guaranteed to be no longer than twice the optimum. We also present a polynomial approximation scheme for the case that the number of machines is fixed. Both approximation results are corollaries of a theorem about the relationship of a class of integer programming problems and their linear programming relaxations. In particular, we give a polynomial method to round the fractional extreme points of the linear program to integral points that nearly satisfy the constraints.In contrast to our main result, we prove that no polynomial algorithm can achieve a worst-case ratio less than 3/2 unlessP = NP. In this work, we take advantage of the powerful quadratic programming theory to obtain optimal solutions of scheduling problems. We apply a methodology that starts, in contrast to more classical approaches, by formulating three unrelated parallel machine scheduling problems as 0–1 quadratic programs under linear constraints. By construction, these quadratic programs are non-convex. Therefore, before submitting them to a branch-and-bound procedure, we reformulate them in such a way that we can ensure convexity and a high-quality continuous lower bound. Experimental results show that this methodology is interesting by obtaining the best results in literature for two of the three studied scheduling problems.  相似文献

We consider the problem of finding a minimum-length preemptive schedule for n jobs on m parallel machines. The problem is solvable in polynomial time, whether the machines are identical, uniform or unrelated. For identical or uniform machines, it is easy to obtain an optimal schedule in which the portion of a job that is assigned to a single machine is processed without interruption. We show that imposing this condition in the case of unrelated machines makes the problem NP-hard.  相似文献

A polynomial-time algorithm is suggested for non-preemptive scheduling of n-independent jobs on m-unrelated machines to minimize the makespan. The algorithm has a worst-case performance ratio of 2−1/m. This is better than the earlier known best performance bound 2. Our approach gives the best possible approximation ratio that can be achieved using the rounding approach.  相似文献

This paper analyzes a manufacturing system consisting of parallel machines, which produce one product-type with controllable production rates subject to continuously-divisible, time-dependent resources. The objective is to produce the required amount of product-type units by a due date while minimizing inventory, backlog and production related costs over a production horizon. With the aid of the maximum principle, a number of analytical rules of the optimal scheduling is derived whereby the continuous-time scheduling is reduced to discrete sequencing and timing. As a result, a polynomial-time algorithm is developed for solving the problem.  相似文献

Each of n jobs is to be processed without interruption on one of m unrelated parallel machines. The objectives is to minimize the maximum completion time. A heuristic method is presented, the first stage of which uses linear programming to form a partial schedule leaving at most m?1 jobs unscheduled: the second stage schedules these m?1 jobs using an enumerative method. For m≥3, it is shown that the heuristic has a (best possible) worst-case performance ratio of 2 and has a computational requirement which is polynomial in n although it is exponential in m. For m = 2, it is shown that the heuristic has a (best possible) worst-case performance ratio of 1 +5)2 and requires linear time. A modified version of the heuristic is presented for m = 2 which is shown to have a (best possible) worst-case performance ratio of 32 while still requiring linear time.  相似文献

We study the performance of scheduling algorithms for a manufacturing system, called the ‘no-wait flowshop’, which consists of a certain number of machine centers. Each center has one or more identical parallel machines. Each job is processed by at most one machine in each center. The problem of finding the minimum finish time schedule is considered here in a flowshop consisting of two machine centers. Heuristic algorithms are presented and are analyzed in the worst case performance context. For the case of two centers, one with a single machine and the other with m, two heuristics are presented with tight performance guarantees of 3 − (1/m) and 2. When both centers have m machines, a heuristic is presented with an upper bound performance guarantee of . It is also shown that this bound can be reduced to 2(1 + ε). For the flowshop with any number of machines in each center, we provide a heuristic algorithm with an upper bound performance guarantee that depends on the relative number of machines in the centers.  相似文献

Instruction scheduling is an important step for improving the performance of object code produced by a compiler. A fundamental problem that arises in instruction scheduling is to find a minimum length schedule for a basic block—a straight-line sequence of code with a single entry point and a single exit point—subject to precedence, latency, and resource constraints. Solving the problem exactly is known to be difficult, and most compilers use a greedy list scheduling algorithm coupled with a heuristic. The heuristic is usually hand-crafted, a potentially time-consuming process. In contrast, we present a study on automatically learning good heuristics using techniques from machine learning. In our study, a recently proposed optimal basic block scheduler was used to generate the machine learning training data. A decision tree learning algorithm was then used to induce a simple heuristic from the training data. The automatically constructed decision tree heuristic was compared against a popular critical-path heuristic on the SPEC 2000 benchmarks. On this benchmark suite, the decision tree heuristic reduced the number of basic blocks that were not optimally scheduled by up to 55% compared to the critical-path heuristic, and gave improved performance guarantees in terms of the worst-case factor from optimality.  相似文献

In this study we consider unrelated parallel machines scheduling problems with learning effect and deteriorating jobs, in which the actual processing time of a job is a function of joint time-dependent deterioration and position-dependent learning. The objective is to determine the jobs assigned to corresponding each machine and the corresponding optimal schedule to minimize a cost function containing total completion (waiting) time, total absolute differences in completion (waiting) times and total machine load. If the number of machines is a given constant, we show that the problems can be solved in polynomial time under the time-dependent deterioration and position-dependent learning model.  相似文献

In this paper we address the problem of finding a dominator for a multiple-objective maximization problem with quasiconvex functions. The one-dimensional case is discussed in some detail, showing how a Branch-and-Bound procedure leads to a dominator with certain minimality properties. Then, the well-known result stating that the set of vertices of a polytope S contains an optimal solution for single-objective quasiconvex maximization problems is extended to multiple-objective problems, showing that, under upper-semicontinuity assumptions, the set of (k 21)-dimensional faces is a dominator for k-objective problems. In particular, for biobjective quasiconvex problems on a polytope S, the edges of S constitute a dominator, from which a dominator with minimality properties can be extracted by Branch-and Bound methods.  相似文献

We study the one-machine scheduling problem with release dates and we look at several objective functions including total (weighted) tardiness and total (weighted) completion time. We describe dominance rules for these criteria, as well as techniques for using these dominance rules to build heuristic solutions. We use them to improve certain well-known greedy heuristic algorithms from the literature. Finally, we introduce a Tabu Search method with a neighborhood based on our dominance rules. Experiments show the effectiveness of our techniques in obtaining very good solutions for all studied criteria.  相似文献

This paper investigates a distributionally robust scheduling problem on identical parallel machines, where job processing times are stochastic without any exact distributional form. Based on a distributional set specified by the support and estimated moments information, we present a min-max distributionally robust model, which minimizes the worst-case expected total flow time out of all probability distributions in this set. Our model doesn’t require exact probability distributions which are the basis for many stochastic programming models, and utilizes more information compared to the interval-based robust optimization models. Although this problem originates from the manufacturing environment, it can be applied to many other fields when the machines and jobs are endowed with different meanings. By optimizing the inner maximization subproblem, the min-max formulation is reduced to an integer second-order cone program. We propose an exact algorithm to solve this problem via exploring all the solutions that satisfy the necessary optimality conditions. Computational experiments demonstrate the high efficiency of this algorithm since problem instances with 100 jobs are optimized in a few seconds. In addition, simulation results convincingly show that the proposed distributionally robust model can hedge against the bias of estimated moments and enhance the robustness of production systems.  相似文献

We study the problem of scheduling n non-preemptive jobs on m unrelated parallel machines. Each machine can process a specified subset of the jobs. If a job is assigned to a machine, then it occupies a specified time interval on the machine. Each assignment of a job to a machine yields a value. The objective is to find a subset of the jobs and their feasible assignments to the machines such that the total value is maximized. The problem is NP-hard in the strong sense. We reduce the problem to finding a maximum weight clique in a graph and survey available solution methods. Furthermore, based on the peculiar properties of graphs, we propose an exact solution algorithm and five heuristics. We conduct computer experiments to assess the performance of our and other existing heuristics. The computational results show that our heuristics outperform the existing heuristics.  相似文献
