Conjugate free convection along a vertical cylindrical fin in a non-Newtonian fluid-saturated porous medium has been investigated theoretically. The boundary layer equations based on the power lay model appropriate for the Darcy flows are solved numerically exploiting a very efficient finite difference method. Effects of the power-law index, conjugate convection-conduction parameter and the surface curvature parameter on the fin temperature distribution, local heat transfer-coefficient and local heat flux are studied and presented in graphical and tabular form.  相似文献

The thermal analysis of the annular rectangular profile fins with variable thermal properties is investigated by using the homotopy analysis method (HAM). The thermal conductivity and heat transfer coefficient are assumed to vary with a linear and power-law function of temperature, respectively. The effects of the thermal-geometric fin parameter and the thermal conductivity parameter variations on the temperature distribution and fin efficiency are investigated for different heat transfer modes. Results from the HAM are compared with numerical results of the finite difference method (FDM). It can be seen that the variation of dimensionless parameters has a significant effect on the temperature distribution and fin efficiency.  相似文献

The fin efficiency in a heat exchanger element that is a simplification of one row in a tube-and-fin heat exchanger was theoretically examined within wide ranges of the affecting variables: the conventional fin efficiency and the isothermal effectiveness of the heat exchanger. These variables are suggested for use also in the further studies. An analytical solution can be found for the case of a constant heat transfer coefficient. The ambient temperature variation alone decreases the fin efficiency less than 4%. The local heat transfer coefficient obtained from the numerical fluid flow simulations is strongly affected by the fin properties because the thermal boundary conditions for the fluid flow changes. On a poorly conducting fin surface the heat transfer coefficient in front of the fin base is much larger than on an isothermal fin because the heat flux is increasing in the flow direction. At low fin efficiencies this compensates for the decrease in fin efficiency due to ambient temperature variation.  相似文献

This work deals with the local heat transfer coefficient evaluation over the fin of the second row of a staggered circular finned tube heat exchanger assembly. The coefficient distribution is determined by using a transient technique and by calculating the energy balance during the fin cooling. The calculation model takes into account radiation with the surrounding and lateral heat conduction into the material. The method uses infrared measurements and integration between time bounds that depend on space. It is proposed to choose the integration bounds with an original criterion based on local heat transfer. Validation is performed on the reference case consisting in a thin plate in an aerodynamically and thermally developing channel flow. Then, distributions of Nusselt number on the circular fin are presented for several Reynolds numbers. The high resolution of the whole method and set-up allow detecting thermal imprints of developing horseshoe vortices. These imprints are analyzed by following their angular evolution around the tube.  相似文献

The present article investigates the effect of locally variable heat transfer coefficient on the performance of extended surfaces (fins) subject to natural convection. Fins of different profiles have been investigated. The fin profiles presently considered are namely; straight and pin fin with rectangular (constant diameter), convex parabolic, triangular (conical) and concave parabolic profiles and radial fins with constant profile with different radius ratios. The local heat transfer coefficient was considered as function of the local temperature and has been obtained using the available correlations of natural convection for each pertinent extended surface considered. The performance of the fin has been expressed in terms of the fin efficiency. Comparisons between the present results for all fins considered and the results obtained for the corresponding fins subject to constant heat transfer coefficient along the fin are presented. Comparisons, i.e. showed an excellent agreement with the experimental results available in the literature. Results show that there is a considerable deviation between the fin efficiency calculated based on constant heat transfer coefficient and that calculated based on variable heat transfer coefficient and this deviation increases with the dimensionless parameter m.  相似文献

This paper presents an analysis of the problem of a thin fin of finite thermal conductivity, with an isothermal line source at the base, dissipating heat to the surrounding air by natural convection. The horizontal surface to which the fin is attached is adiabatic so that heat is dissipated only through the fin. The temperature and velocity distributions in the field, the temperature profile in the fin, local Nusselt numbers along the fin and the average heat transfer coefficient of the fin are obtained by solving the governing equations in the field and the heat transfer equation in the fin simultaneously, using an explicit unsteady Finite Difference formulation leading to the steady state result. Numerical experiments are performed to study the influence of parameters namely the fin height, temperature of the heating source and the fin material on the average heat transfer coefficient. Comparison is made with fins of infinite thermal conductivity and the vertical isothermal flat plate.  相似文献

A method is developed to capture the distribution of surface temperature while simultaneously imaging the bubble motions in diabatic flow boiling in a horizontal minichannel. Liquid crystal thermography is used to obtain highly resolved surface temperature measurements on the uniformly heated upper surface of the channel. High-speed images of the flow field are acquired simultaneously and are overlaid with the thermal images. The local surface temperature and heat transfer coefficient can be analyzed with the knowledge of the nucleation site density and location, and bubble motion and size evolution. The horizontal channel is 1.2 mm high × 23 mm wide × 357 mm long, and the working fluids are Novec 649 and R-11. Optical access is through a machined glass plate which forms the bottom of the channel. The top surface is an electrically heated 76 μm-thick Hastelloy foil held in place by a water-cooled aluminum and glass frame. The heat loss resulting from this construction is computed using a conduction model in Fluent. The model is driven by temperature measurements on the foil, glass plate and aluminum frame. This model produces a corrected value for the local surface heat flux and enables the computation of the bulk fluid temperature and heat transfer coefficient along the channel. The streamwise evolution of the heat transfer coefficient for single-phase laminar flow is compared to theoretical values for a uniform-flux boundary condition. Examples of the use of the facility for visualizing subcooled two-phase flows are presented. These examples include measurements of the surface temperature distribution around active nucleation sites and the construction of boiling curves for locations along the test surface. Points on the curve can be associated with specific image sequences so that the role of mechanisms such as nucleation and the sliding of confined bubbles may be discerned.  相似文献

Flow boiling in metal-foam filled tube was analytically investigated based on a modified microstructure model, an original boiling heat transfer model and fin analysis for metal foams. Microstructure model of metal foams was established, by which fiber diameter and surface area density were precisely predicted. The heat transfer model for flow boiling in metal foams was based on annular pattern, in which two phase fluid was composed by vapor region in the center of the tube and liquid region near the wall. However, it was assumed that nucleate boiling performed only in the liquid region. Fin analysis and heat transfer network for metal foams were integrated to obtain the convective heat transfer coefficient at interface. The analytical solution was verified by its good agreement with experimental data. The parametric study on heat transfer coefficient and boiling mechanism was also carried out.  相似文献

This paper, for the first time, experimentally elucidated pin fin boiling characteristics of saturated and subcooled HFE-7100, a CFC-substitute, under atmospheric pressure. Fin base temperature and heat flux data are, for the first time, measured along with the fin tip temperature. For a given liquid/fin combination there exist upper steady-state (USS) branch, lower steady-state (LSS) branch, and a large, unstable regime located in between the two branches. Zones with different stability characteristics are mapped according to boiling on fins with different aspect ratios. Liquid subcooling enhances heat transfer performance and boiling stability. Calculation of boiling curve qualitatively describes the experimental results.  相似文献

The non-Newtonian effect in the boundary layer flow over a horizontal elliptical cylinder is investigated numerically. A modified power-law viscosity model is used to correlate the non-Newtonian characteristics of the fluid flow. For natural convectionflows, the surface of the cylinder is maintained by the uniform surface temperature(UST)or the uniform heat flux(UHF) condition. The governing equations corresponding to theflow are first transformed into a dimensionless non-similar form using suitable transformations. The resulting equations are solved numerically by an efficient finite difference scheme. The numerical results are presented for the skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number with the eccentric angle for different values of the power-law index n. The local skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are found to be higher and lower, respectively, for the shear thickening fluids(n > 1) than the other fluids(n≤1).The effects of different elliptical configurations on the average Nusselt number are also presented and discussed for both conditions of the surface temperature.  相似文献

Jet impingement boiling is very efficient in cooling of hot surfaces as a part of the impinging liquid evaporates. Because of its importance to many cooling procedures, investigations on basic mechanisms of jet impingement boiling heat transfer are needed. Until now, most of the experimental studies, carried out under steady-state conditions, used a heat flux controlled system and were limited by the critical heat flux (CHF). The present study focuses on steady-state experiments along the entire boiling curve for hot plate temperatures of up to 700°C. A test section has been built up simulating a hot plate. It is divided into 8 independently heated modules of 10 mm length to enable local heat transfer measurements. By means of temperature controlled systems for each module local steady-state experiments in the whole range between single phase heat transfer and film boiling are possible. By solving the two dimensional inverse heat conduction problem, the local heat flux and the corresponding wall temperature on the surface of each module can be computed. The measurements show important differences between boiling curves measured at the stagnation line and those obtained in the parallel flow region. At the stagnation line, the transition boiling regime is characterised by very high heat fluxes, extended to large wall superheats. Inversely, boiling curves in the parallel flow region are very near to classical ones obtained for forced convection boiling. The analysis of temperature fluctuations measured at a depth of 0.8 mm from the boiling surface enables some conclusions on the boiling mechanism in the different boiling regimes.  相似文献

The effects of non-uniform heat generation/absorption and viscous dissipation on heat transfer of a non-Newtonian power-law fluid on a non-linearly stretching surface have been examined. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations describing the problem are transformed to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations by using suitable similarity transformation. The transformed system of ordinary differential equations is solved numerically using fourth order Runge-Kutta method with the shooting technique. Graphical solutions for the dimensionless temperature are presented and discussed for various values of the power-law index parameter, the Prandtl number, the heat generation/absorption parameter and the Eckert number. The results show that the local Nusselt number is reduced with increasing the Eckert number or the heat generation parameter, whereas the heat absorption parameter has the effect of enhancing the local Nusselt number.  相似文献

The time dependent performance of extended surfaces subjected to fouling is addressed in this work. Where fins are used for augmenting boiling heat transfer, the interaction of local values of temperature excess, fouling resistance and surface characteristics of the deposit can be quite complex. Taking typical asymptotic fouling growth parameters from literature for reverse solubility salts, three kinds of fin geometry are analysed – rectangular, triangular and annular. For various values of the fin parameter mL, the temperature distribution and variation of fouling resistance are obtained as a function of time. To interpret the performance of a fouled fin, a new term `cleanliness efficiency' is introduced. The necessity of choosing an optimal value of mL for the fin is also highlighted here. It is shown that for all three fin configurations, cleanliness efficiency differs little, thus simplifying the geometry dependence. The approach set out in this work will help in the design of finned heat exchangers subjected to fouling and thereby minimise their overdesign. Received on 12 July 2000  相似文献

The present paper addresses the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the pool boiling heat transfer over micro-structured surfaces. The surfaces are made from silicon chips, in the context of pool boiling heat transfer enhancement of immersion liquid cooling schemes for electronic components. The first part of the analysis deals with the effect of the liquid properties. Then the effect of surface micro-structuring is discussed, covering different configurations, from cavities to pillars being the latter used to infer on the potential profit of a fin-like configuration. The use of rough surfaces to enhance pool boiling mainly stands on the arguments that the surface roughness will increase the liquid–solid contact area, thus enhancing the convection heat transfer coefficient and will promote the generation of nucleation sites. However, one should not disregard bubble dynamics. Indeed, the results show a strong effect of bubble dynamics and particularly of the interaction mechanisms in the overall cooling performance of the pair liquid–surface. The inaccurate control of these mechanisms leads to the formation of large bubbles and strong vertical and horizontal coalescence effects promote the very fast formation of a vapor blanket, which causes a steep decrease of the heat transfer coefficient. This effect can be strong enough to prevail over the benefit of increasing the contact area by roughening the surface. For the micro-patterns used in the present work, the results evidence that one can reasonably determine guiding pattern characteristics to evaluate the intensity of the interaction mechanisms and take out the most of the patterning to enhance pool boiling heat transfer, when using micro-cavities. Instead, it is far more difficult to control the appearance of active nucleation sites and the optimization of the patterns allowing a reasonable control of the interaction mechanisms and in particular of horizontal coalescence, when dealing with the patterns based on micro-pillars. Hence, providing an increase of the liquid contact area by an effective increase of the roughness ratio is not enough to assure a good performance of the micro-structured surface. Despite it was not possible to clearly evidence a pin–fin effect or of an additional cooling effect due to liquid circulation between the pillars, the results show a significant increase of the heat transfer coefficient of about 10 times for water and 8 times for the dielectric fluid, in comparison to the smooth surface, when the micro-patterning based on pillars is used.  相似文献

An analysis is presented for fully developed laminar convective heat transfer of non-Newtonian power-law fluids in pipes with internal longitudinal fins and uniform outside wall temperature. The governing momentum and energy equations have been solved numerically, with the influence of fin conductance. The distributions of fin temperature, fluid temperature and local heat flux (both at finned and unfinned surfaces) are presented. These are shown to be strongly dependent on finned pipe geometry, fluid flow behavior index and the fin conductance. Values of overall Nusselt number indicated significant heat transfer enhancement over finless pipes. The flow behavior index affects the no. of fins which maximizes the overall Nusselt number.  相似文献

This work theoretically investigated the thermal performance and stability characteristics of a straight pin fin subject to boiling considering a temperature-dependent thermal conductivity of fin, k=k sat(1+b(TT sat)). Steady-state temperature distribution and the associated fin base heat flow were for the first time analytically found, whose stability characteristics were evaluated by linear stability analysis. A positive temperature coefficient b will raise both the fin's temperature and base heat flow. The corresponding stability for stable fin boiling was enhanced. A negative b results in an opposite trend. The use of a mean thermal conductivity in fin boiling calculations is discussed. Received on 3 November 1997  相似文献

The effect of thermoviscosity (temperature-dependent viscosity) on the heat transfer in a power-law liquid film over an unsteady stretching sheet is investigated. Similarity analysis is used to transform the governing equations for mass, momentum and energy into a system of ordinary differential equations, which contain a thermoviscosity parameter θr, unsteadiness parameter S, generalized Prandtl number Pr and power-law index n. The film thickness, the temperature distributions, the local heat transfer rate, and the local skin-friction coefficient were obtained using the Chebyshev finite difference method (ChFD). The results show that thermoviscosity significantly increases the film thickness and the local heat transfer rate while decreasing the local skin-friction coefficient as θr  1. It is found that liquids with a higher power-law index will have a larger film thickness and a higher free-surface temperature, which indicate a lower local heat transfer rate, ?θ′(0).  相似文献

Performance of horizontal copper heaters with a transverse fin structure was investigated for pool boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux limits. Data were obtained for 5.1 and 7.6 cm diameter structured cooper and brass heaters in saturated R-113 boiling at pressures ranging between 0.037 and 1 atm. The fin structure consisted of 0.16 cm×0.16 cm×0.32 cm high square fins with an interfin spacing of 0.16 cm. Following a similar methodology to Haley and Westwater1, a numerical analysis of the heat transfer phenomenon was performed by solving the one-dimensional fin conduction equation with a non-linear heat transfer boundary condition obtained from the previously reported data for R-113 boiling on plain surfaces. The predictions agreed with the data at the 1 atm pressure levels but showed deviations at the low pressure levels. The results showed that, compared with plain surface heaters of the same diameters the finned structured surfaces investigated: (a) decreased the wall temperature differences for a given heat flux and saturated pool boiling conditions, thus improving the nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficients, and (b) increased the critical heat flux limits, calculated as the power input divided by the heater projected area, by a factor of 2–2.5.  相似文献

The method of non-similarity solution is used to study the influence of thermal dispersion on combined convection from vertical surfaces in a porous medium saturated with a power-law type non-Newtonian fluid. The coefficient of thermal diffusivity has been assumed to be the sum of molecular diffusivity and the dispersion thermal diffusivity due to mechanical dispersion. The transformed conservation laws are solved numerically for the case of variable surface heat flux conditions. Results for the details of the velocity and temperature fields as well as the Nusselt number have been presented.  相似文献
