We present a new type of temperature driven spin reorientation transition (SRT) in thin films. It can occur when the lattice and the shape anisotropy favor different easy directions of the magnetization. Due to different temperature dependencies of the two contributions the effective anisotropy may change its sign and thus the direction of the magnetization as a function of temperature may change. Contrary to the well-known reorientation transition caused by competing surface and bulk anisotropy contributions the reorientation that we discuss is also found in film systems with a uniform lattice anisotropy. The results of our theoretical model study may have experimental relevance for film systems with positive lattice anisotropy, as e.g. thin iron films grown on copper.  相似文献

The magnetic properties of very thin ferromagnetic Fe films (1–10 atomic layers) in contact with nonmagnetic amorphous metals are investigated. Apart from the demagnetization energy, which supports a magnetization in the film plane, an energy of magnetic anisotropy occurs in the interlayer, which has the tendency to turn the magnetization perpendicular to the surface. The anomalous Hall effect of the ferromagnetic films is used to investigate their magnetic properties. From the measurements we get the applied magnetic fieldB s , which is necessary to turn the magnetization perpendicular to the film surface.B s is, besides a constant term, proportional to 1/d, which is typical of surface effects and yields the energy of the interface anisotropy. The value of this energy is strongly dependent on the nonmagnetic metal and is smaller for the system Pb/Fe than for Sn/Fe. Furthermore, the experimental results show no drastic reduction of the atomic magnetic moment in the surface layer.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of the eigenfrequencies of magnetization oscillation in a single-crystal film is shown to depend strongly on the temperature dependence of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy field. The conditions are considered under which the temperature coefficient of the ferromagnetic resonance frequency in a film with cubic anisotropy changes sign as the orientation of the magnetization vector is changed from the 〈111〉 to the 〈100〉 direction. The spectrum of surface magnetostatic waves is investigated experimentally in 〈110〉-oriented yttrium iron garnet films. It is established that, due to magnetic anisotropy of the ferrite, the temperature dependence of the long-wavelength limit of the frequency spectrum becomes nonmonotonic when a film of this material is magnetized along the 〈100〉 axis.  相似文献

Free oscillations of the magnetization ranging from 500 to 1100 mc/sec have been excited in thin permalloy films by a pulse field with a risetime less than 0·35 nsec, and observed with a sampling oscilloscope. The eigenfrequencies and the damping constants of these free oscillations are compared with the resonance frequencies and the damping constants of forced oscillations obtained in ferromagnetic resonance experiments. Perpendicular and parallel orientation of the magnetization with respect to the easy direction of the induced uniaxial anisotropy of the film are considered. The results show reasonable agreement with theoretical values gained from the Landau-Lifshitz equation.  相似文献

The magnetic properties of very thin ferromagnetic Fe films (1–10 atomic layers) in contact with nonmagnetic amorphous metals are investigated. Apart from the demagnetization energy, which supports a magnetization in the plane of the film, an energy of magnetic anisotropy occurs in the interlayer, which has the tendency to orient the magnetization perpendicular to the surface. The anomalous Hall effect of the ferromagnetic films is used to investigate their magnetic properties. From the measurements, we get the applied magnetic field Bs, which is necessary to orient the magnetization perpendicular to the film surface. In addition to a constant term, Bs is proportional to 1/d, which is typical of surface effects and yields the energy of the interface anisotropy. The value of this energy is strongly dependent on the nonmagnetic metal and is smaller for the system Pb/Fe than for Sn/Fe. Although the spin-reorientation transition from out-of-plane to in-plane in Fe/Si film is widely reported, the tuning of in-plane spin orientation is not yet well developed. Here, we report the thickness-, temperature- and Cu-adsorptioninduced in-plane spin-reorientation transition processes in Fe/Si(557) film, which can be attributed to the coexistence of two competing step-induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropies, i.e., surface magnetic anisotropy with magnetization easy axis perpendicular to the step and volume magnetic anisotropy with magnetization easy axis parallel to the step. For Fe film thickness smaller than 32 monolayer(ML), the magnitudes of two effects under various temperatures are extracted from the thickness dependence of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. For Fe film thickness larger than 32 ML, the deviation of experimental results from fitting results is understood by the strain-relief-induced reduction of volume magnetic anisotropy.Additionally, the surface and volume magnetic anisotropies are both greatly reduced after covering Cu capping layer on Fe/Si(557) film while no significant influence of Na Cl capping layer on step-induced magnetic anisotropies is observed. The experimental results reported here provide various practical methods for manipulating in-plane spin orientation of Fe/Si films and improve the understanding of step-induced magnetic anisotropies.  相似文献

Surface magneto-optical Kerr effect (SMOKE) magnetometry in the temperature range 10–300 K was exploited to investigate the magnetic properties of high-quality Cu/Ni/Cu/Si(1 1 1) epitaxial heterostructures with thickness of the Ni layer, dNi, between 10 and 60 Å. For a fixed temperature, the equilibrium direction of the magnetization is parallel or perpendicular to the film surface, depending on the Ni thickness, because of the competition among shape anisotropy, magnetoelastic anisotropy and interface anisotropy. No reorientation of the magnetization could be observed as a function of temperature, for any of the specimens analyzed, while a large variation of the loop squareness and coercivity was found. This last variation has been qualitatively explained using a theoretical model based on a Green's function technique, valid for a monodomain film with a coherent rotation of the magnetization.  相似文献

The magnetic-field dependences of the stability boundaries of the nonequilibrium magnetic states that exist in a nanogranular film with perpendicular anisotropy in tilted magnetic fields are theoretically described, and the corresponding critical magnetization is calculated. The field dependences of the critical magnetization of the film are analyzed at various ratios of the anisotropy field of particles to the maximum possible demagnetizing field of the film. In a tilted magnetic field, the magnetization reversal curves, which include hysteresis loops, are shown to consist of segments of the following three types: equilibrium stable magnetization, nonequilibrium stable magnetization, and critical type of magnetization.  相似文献

The magnetic ground state, magnetic anisotropies and spin excitations of surfaces, interfaces and ultra-thin films of ferromagnetic 3d-metals are discussed. Enhanced magnetic ground state moments and altered hyperfine fields as predicted by ab initio band calculations have not been conclusively verified by experiments up to now. Future calculations should take into account dipolar fields and the role of interface roughness. Very large magnetic anisotropies are observed at magnetic surfaces and interfaces. In Ni/Cu multilayered films, the superposition of surface and stress-induced anisotropies was used to switch the easy axis of magnetization from the film plane to a perpendicular orientation by a proper choice of the Ni layer thickness. This could be an attractive possibility to develop new magnetic materials for technical applications. The temperature dependence of the spontaneous magnetization at surfaces and in ultra-thin films deviates from the behaviour of bulk material. Size effects as well as surface effects of spin wave excitations are discussed, comparing theoretical and experimental results. The need for more complete theories including surface exchange, surface anisotropy and realistic surface structures is emphasized.  相似文献

The transformation of the domain structure of micrometer-thick films with variations in the induced uniaxial anisotropy constant with the easy magnetization axis perpendicular to the film surface has been investigated using numerical micromagnetic simulation in the framework of a two-dimensional model of the magnetization distribution. The case where the tetra-axial crystallographic anisotropy exists in the film with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy has been considered. The transformation of the open domain structure into the structure with a magnetic flux closed inside the sample has been investigated in detail, and new types of 109-degree and 90-degree vortex-like domain walls and periodic domain structures have been obtained.  相似文献

Domain structures in thin sputtered amorphous FeB films are studied by means of the longitudinal Kerr effect. In addition to the irregular domain structure characteristic of soft magnetic materials, we observe in certain regions a fine equilibrium domain structure with periodicity of a few micrometers. The Kerr contrast indicates that the magnetization at the surface of the film lies partially along the stripe direction. These characteristics and the behavior in applied fields suggests that the domains are similar to type II “strong stripe domains” observed earlier in permalloy films. Extending an earlier theory by Hara, we use a stray-field-free model with tilted orthorhombic anisotropy to show that there are at least two qualitatively different strong stripe structures: type IIa with surface magnetization perpendicular to the stripes and type IIb with surface magnetization at least partially parallel to the stripes. Type IIb is favored when Kp/K0<cos 2θ 0 where K0 is the anisotropy component with axis tilted by θ0 out of the film plane, and Kp is an in-plane anisotropy perpendicular to K0. Strong stripes in amorphous FeB appear to be type IIb while those in permalloy are usually type IIa.  相似文献

Polycrystalline thin Ni films deposited onto GaAs (0 0 1) show a transition of the magnetic anisotropy depending on its thickness. The anisotropy is perpendicular to the film plane for the thicknesses of the film ⩽12 nm. This becomes in-plane in the films having thicknesses ⩾15 nm. The films are deposited onto the n-type GaAs (0 0 1) substrate by the usual thermal evaporation method and also by the electron beam evaporation in ultra high vacuum onto a GaAs epilayer in the standard molecular beam epitaxy system. The magnetization and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) are observed in the temperature range from 4.2 to 300 K. For the discussion of the microscopic origin of the anomalous properties in magnetization and FMR experiments, the experimental results are reviewed by introducing a uniaxial anisotropy, which is calculated from the easy-axis and hard-axis magnetization data. This calculated anisotropy is able to explain the temperature and angle dependency of the FMR spectra of the Ni films. Hence the magnetization and FMR spectra are in agreement with the type of the anisotropy and its temperature dependency. In addition to these, the temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic anisotropy is able to explain the previously reported anomalous effect of reducing the squareness at low temperatures in Ni/GaAs.  相似文献

Using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method, thickness dependent magnetic anisotropy of ultrathin FeCo alloy films in the range of 1 monolayer (ML) to 5 ML coverage on Pd(0 0 1) surface has been explored. We have found that the FeCo alloy films have close to half metallic state and well-known surface enhancement in thin film magnetism is observed in Fe atom, whereas the Co has rather stable magnetic moment. However, the largest magnetic moment in Fe and Co is found at 1 ML thickness. Interestingly, it has been observed that the interface magnetic moments of Fe and Co are almost the same as those of surface elements. The similar trend exists in orbital magnetic moment. This indicates that the strong hybridization between interface FeCo alloy and Pd gives rise to the large magnetic moment. Theoretically calculated magnetic anisotropy shows that the 1 ML FeCo alloy has in-plane magnetization, but the spin reorientation transition (SRT) from in-plane to perpendicular magnetization is observed above 2 ML thickness with huge magnetic anisotropy energy. The maximum magnetic anisotropy energy for perpendicular magnetization is as large as 0.3 meV/atom at 3 ML film thickness with saturation magnetization of . Besides, the calculated X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) has been presented.  相似文献

Magnetic properties and internal stresses of AlN(20 nm)/[CoPt(2 nm)/AlN(20 nm)]5 multilayer structure deposited at different substrate temperatures by dc magnetron sputtering have been studied. It is found that with increasing the substrate temperature from room temperature to 400 °C, in-plane magnetic anisotropy field of the film becomes smaller, and the out-of-plane magnetization becomes stronger. Especially when the film is deposited at substrate temperature of 400 °C, the out-of-plane magnetization becomes as strong as the in-plane magnetization. On the other hand, the total in-plane residual stress of the film changes gradually from compressive to tensile. The compressive intrinsic stress is generated during deposition process and decreases with increasing the substrate temperature. After annealing at high temperatures, the films show strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. With increasing the annealing temperature, the in-plane thermal stress also increases and becomes dominant, which is considered to result in the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the films.  相似文献

Based on the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) calculations, various magnetic properties of ultra thin face centered cubic (fcc) Co(0 0 1) film and V adsorbed systems on Co(0 0 1) surface are explored. It was found that the V film grown on fcc Co(0 0 1) surface has large induced magnetic moment and the direction of magnetization is antiparallel to that of Co atom in the submonolayer coverage. Very interestingly, we found that the surface alloy and 0.5 ML adsorbed V/Co(0 0 1) systems have perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy and the magnitude of anisotropy energy in 0.5 ML V on fcc Co(0 0 1) surface is greatly larger than that of surface alloy, while we observed in-plane magnetization in pure fcc Co(0 0 1) film. It was found that the spin-orbit interaction through spin-flip process cannot be ignored, therefore the simple relation with orbital anisotropy is not applicable in the interpretation of magnetocrystalline anisotropy.  相似文献

Magnetic excitations in a series of GaMnAs ferromagnetic semiconductor films were studied by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). Using the FMR approach, multi-mode spin wave resonance spectra have been observed, whose analysis provides information on magnetic anisotropy (including surface anisotropy), distribution of magnetization precession within the GaMnAs film, dynamic surface spin pinning (derived from surface anisotropy), and the value of exchange stiffness constant D. These studies illustrate a combination of magnetism and semiconductor physics that is unique to magnetic semiconductors.  相似文献

Using Green‘s function method,we investigate ferromagnetic films with a simple cubic lattice containing up to ten monolayers. The Hamiltonian includes the Heisenberg exchange term, surface anisotropy (SA) and dipole interaction (DI).We calculate the magnetization as a function of temperature and film thickness, and we analyse the behaviour of spin canting. The result is in agreement with experiments. We calculate phase diagrams of SA versus DI to show the conditions under which spontaneous magnetization can occur. As a special case,we discuss the Heisenberg model without SA and DI.
