In this paper we consider the problem of adhesive frictionless contact of an elastic half-space by an axi-symmetric punch. We obtain integral equations that define the tractions and displacements normal to the surface of the half-space, as well as the size of the contact regions, for the cases of circular and annular contact regions. The novelty of our approach resides in the use of Betti’s reciprocity theorem to impose equilibrium, and of Abel transforms to either solve or substantially simplify the resulting integral equations. Additionally, the radii that define the annular or circular contact region are defined as local minimizers of the function obtained by evaluating the potential energy at the equilibrium solutions for each pair of radii. With this approach, we rather easily recover Sneddon’s formulas (Sneddon, Int. J. Eng. Sci., 3(1):47–57, 1965) for circular contact regions. For the annular contact region, we obtain a new integral equation that defines the inverse Abel transform of the surface normal displacement. We solve this equation numerically for two particular punches: a flat annular punch, and a concave punch.

The problem of the equilibrium shape and departure size of two-dimensional dropwise condensation drops on a vertical surface, presented in an earlier work, is extended to include advancing contact angles to 180°. The equation of the surface of the drop is obtained by minimizing (for a given volume) the total energy of the drop, consisting of surface and gravitational energy, using the techniques of variational calculus. The solution is tractable once the advancing contact angle is known, and is taken as an approximation to the axial meridian profile of a threedimensional drop. The receding contact angle is obtained as part of the solution. The drop size is specified by imposing its vertical length in contact with the wall. A maximum value of this length exists which provides a real solution, and this is taken as the departure size of the drop. It is shown that the general departure shape for an advancing contact angle of 180° includes the cases for all advancing contact angles.

This study addresses the Brinkman-extended Darcy model (Brinkman flow) of a laminar free-convective flow in an annular porous region. Closed form expressions for Velocity field, Temperature field, Skin-friction and Mass flow rate are given, under a thermal boundary condition of mixed kind at the outer surface of the inner cylinder while the inner surface of the outer cylinder is isothermal. The governing independent parameters are identified to be Darcy number (Da) and ratio of outer to inner radii (R). It is hoped that the study of such flows gives limiting conditions for developing flows and provides an analytical check on numerical solutions for more complex problems dealing with non-Darcian free-convection flow in an annular region.

A new method relying on the Stroh formulism and the theory of the surface impedance tensor was developed to investigate the dynamic instability of interfacial slip waves. The concept of the surface impedance tensor was extended to the case where the wave speed is of a complex value, and the boundary conditions at the frictionally contacting interface were expressed by the surface impedance tensor. Then the boundary value problem was transformed to searching for zeroes of a complex polynomial in the unit circle. As an example, the steady frictional sliding of an elastic half-space in contact with a rigid flat surface was considered in details. A quartic complex characteristic equation was derived and its solution behavior in the unit circle was discussed. An explicit expression for the instability condition of the interfacial slip waves was presented.

Abstract

This study investigates the local contact characteristics of the threaded surface meshing of a planetary roller screw mechanism (PRSM). First, according to the threaded surface structure and threaded surface meshing characteristics, expressions for the principal curvature and principal direction of the contact ellipse at a contact point are derived based on the differential geometry theory. Next, based on a force analysis and threaded surface equations, an analytical model is established to calculate the dimensions and principal vector direction of contact ellipses on threaded surfaces. The elastic deformation and maximum contact stress are determined using Hertz elastic contact theory. Then, finite element (FE) numerical models for a single pair of threads at the screw–roller interface and the roller–nut interface are developed to calculate the contact area and maximum contact stress. The results are compared with those of the analytical model to demonstrate the validity of the analytical model. Finally, based on the analytical model proposed in this article, the local contact characteristics of threaded surfaces with various thread pitches, flank angles, and profile radii of roller threads are analyzed in detail.

The angular superposition method is used to construct an approximate solution of the contact problem on the compression of an elastic cylinder by two rigid plates. The solution thus obtained has a closed-form analytic expression and can be used in the entire domain of the cylinder cross-section. We analyze the absolute error, which takes the largest value near the points of contact between the plates and the cylinder, where the boundary conditions are discontinuous. According to the von Mises criterion, when moving into the depth of the cylinder from the contact site along the symmetry axis, the second invariant J 2 of the stress deviator tensor first decreases and then, after attaining a minimum, increases and attains the largest value at a small depth, which agrees with Johnson’s photoelastic experiments and Dinnik’s computations. We present the graphs of the displacement and normal stress distributions over the contact site, the dependence of the compressing force on the displacements of rigid plates, and the dependence of the invariant J 2 on the coordinate along the symmetry axis. If 640 computation points are chosen on the cylinder boundary and the Hertz law for the normal pressure on the contact site is used, then the error in the approximate solution near the endpoint of the contact site is approximately 55%, and if the proposed two-parameter normal law is used, then the error is of the order of 4%. On the free lateral surface of the cylinder boundary, we find the critical pointM*, which separates the cylinder contraction and extension parts. The contact problems are the most difficult problems, and their solution is complicated by the discontinuous boundary conditions [1–5]. In [6], the contact problem is solved by the Fourier method, which can be used only for bodies of classical shapes. In such cases, the problem can be reduced to solving coupled integral equations [7]. The interaction between the bandage and a cylindrical body is considered in [2, 6, 7]. In [8], the possibility of using the finite element method is investigated in the case of contact problems for a differential wheel with roughness of the contacting surfaces taken into account. In [9, 10], the method of homogeneous solutions is used to consider contact problems for a finite-dimensional elastic cylinder loaded on its end surfaces. Note that only error estimates are given in the literature cited above; the absolute error over the entire domain of the elastic body is not studied, although this is one of the important characteristics of the obtained approximate solution. A sufficiently complete survey of the literature in the field of contact interactions of elastic bodies is given in [3–5].In what follows, we propose to solve contact problems by the angular superposition method [11]. This method can be used for bodies of nonclassical shapes, which can be multiply connected, and the friction on the contact site can be taken into account. In the present paper, as a first example of applied character, we show how this method can be used in the simplest case. The multiple connectedness and the curvilinearity of the shape of the body, as well as taking into account the friction on the boundary, do not create new essential difficulties in this method.

The problem of thermoelastic edge-cracking in two-layered bimaterial systems subjected to convective heating is considered. The medium is assumed to be insulated on one surface and exposed to sudden convective heating on another surface containing the edge crack. It is known that, when a bimaterial system’s surface is heated, compressive stresses arise near the heating surface, forcing the crack surfaces together over a certain cusp-shaped contact length. It is also known that, for a cooled bimaterial systems surface, tensile stresses take place close to the cooling surface and tend to open the crack. So, the edge cracked heating surface problem is treated as an embedded crack with a smooth closure condition of the crack surfaces, with the crack contact length being an additional unknown variable. Superposition and uncoupled quasi-static thermoelasticity principles are adopted to formulate the problem. By using a Fourier integral transform technique, the mixed boundary value problem is reduced to a Cauchy type singular integral equation with an unknown function as the derivative of the crack surface displacement. The numerical results of the stress intensity factors for an edge crack and a crack terminating at the interface, are calculated and presented as a function of time, crack length, heat transfer coefficient, and thickness ratio for two different bimaterial systems, namely a stainless steel layer welded on ferritic steel and a ceramic layer coating on ferritic steel.

A technique is developed to solve contact problems for annular punches interacting with a transversely isotropic layer. The contact problem for two heated annular punches interacting with a layer is solved. The formulas for the contact stresses under the punches are derived, and the effect of the shape of the punches on the magnitude and distribution of these stresses is analyzed

Critical heat flux (CHF) experiments using deionized water as working fluid have been conducted in a range of pressure from 0.6 to 4.2 MPa, mass flow velocity from 60 to 130 kg/ms and wall heat flux from 10 to 90 kW/m2 for vertical narrow annuli with annular gap sizes of 0.95 and 1.5 mm. We found that the CHF, occurring only on the inside tube, or on the outside tube or on both tubes of the annular channel, depends on the heat flux ratio between surfaces of the outside and inside tubes. The CHF, occurring on the surface of the inside tube, reaches the maximum value under the pressure of 2.3 MPa while it occurring on the surface of the outside tube keeps increasing with the increase of the pressure. The CHF, occurring on the inside or outside tubes, increases with the increase of the mass flow velocity and the annular gap size; and decreases with the increase of critical quality and the other tube wall heat flux. Empirical correlations, which agree quite well with the experimental data, have been developed to predict the CHF occurring on surfaces of the inside or outside tubes of the narrow annular channel on the conditions of low pressure and low flow.

In this work, a numerical method has been developed to investigate the adhesionless contact mechanics between rough surfaces. To solve the elastic problem a boundary elements approach is used with self-equilibrated square elements. The domain of integration is discretized developing an “intelligent” adaptive mesh and obtaining a considerable memory saving. The numerical convergence of the method has been verified by comparing the results with the Hertzian solution and by checking the stress probability distribution at the contact interface. The methodology has been then utilized to analyse the contact between an elastic flat substrate and a periodic numerically generated self-affine fractal rigid surface. The fractal surface has been generated by employing spectral methods. The results of our investigation supports the findings of some analytical theories (Persson, 2001) and numerical findings (Yang et al., 2006, Hyun et al., 2004, Carbone and Bottiglione, 2008, Campana and Muser, 2007) in terms of linearity between contact area and load and stress probability distributions.

Boundary value problems for Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations with non-standard boundary conditions are studied. Included is the case where the pressure or its normal derivative is given on some part of the boundary or the pressure is given up to a constant but given velocity flux. First, a variational formulation is introduced which is shown to be equivalent to the Stokes equations with the non-standard boundary conditions under consideration. The existence and uniqueness of the solution of the variational problem are studied. Secondly, most of the results obtained for the Stokes equations are extended to the case of the Navier-Stokes equations. The final section is devoted to numerical experiments, flows in pipes and physiological flows.

We analyze the highly loaded strongly non-stationary squeeze process of an oil film sandwiched between an elastic spherical ball and a rigid rough substrate. We show that the coupling between the elastic properties of the contacting solids, the oil rheology, the surface roughness and the applied load determines a wide range of lubrication conditions from fully elastohydrodynamic to mixed and even boundary lubrication. In particular we find that increasing (decreasing) the surface roughness (the applied normal load) speeds up the squeeze process, anticipates and shrinks the time interval during which the transition to mixed lubrication conditions occurs. On the contrary, the initial separation between the approaching bodies only marginally affects the transition time. We also observe that, in mixed lubrication conditions, the highest asperity-asperity contact pressure occurs in the annular region where the separation between solids takes its minimum value. One then concludes that surface damage and wear should nucleate in the outer region of the contact.

The optimization problem for the contact interaction between a rigid punch and an elasticmediumis considered. It is assumed that that the punch is under the action of some prescribed forces and momenta and moves along a surface bounding a half-space filled with an elastic medium. It is also assumed that themotion is quasistatic and the friction forces arising in the region of contact are taken into account. The punch shape is considered as the desired design variable, and the integral functional characterizing the discrepancy between the pressure distribution in the region of contact that corresponds to the optimized shape of the punch and a given goal distribution of pressure is taken as the minimizing criterion. The optimal shape can be determined efficiently by solving the following two problems: first, to obtain the optimal pressure distribution and then to solve a boundary value problemfor the elastic half-space under the action of the obtained normal pressure and friction forces. By way of example, the optimal shape is analytically determined for a punch of rectangular shape in horizontal projection.

An analysis is presented for turbulent flow in a liquid film which is being dragged along a horizontal tube by an axial shear at the film surface. While being dragged along, the film drains down the wall due to gravity. The analysis can be applied to a number of horizontal, annular, gas-liquid flow problems and an example is given here of its use in analysing condensation in a horizontal tube. For this problem, the predictions show limited agreement with the little experimental data presently available.

The boundary value problem that arises when a mechanically rough rigid punch of arbitrary axisymmetric profile is pressed against the surface of a linear aging viscoelastic half space and is also made to rotate about its axis, so that there is total slip between the contacting surfaces is analysed and solved. The moment required to make the punch rotate, on the assumption that the coefficient of friction obeys a power law or is a constant, and the total normal pressure acting on the punch may each be evaluated in terms of the history of the radius of the contact area. Application is made to the special cases where the punch has the form of (i) a cone, (ii) a paraboloid of revolution and (iii) a flat ended cylinder. Apart from case (iii) where the contract area is constant we can only find an explicit expression for the moment in terms of total pressure so long as the contact area is increasing. The case of constant total pressure and Maxwell viscoelastic material is examined in more detail.
