This paper is concerned with the development and validation of a simple Lagrangian model for particle agglomeration in a turbulent flow involving the collision of particles in a sequence of correlated straining and vortical structures which simulate the Kolmogorov small scales of motion of the turbulence responsible for particle pair dispersion and collision. In this particular study we consider the collision rate of monodisperse spherical particles in a symmetric (pure) straining flow which is randomly rotated to create an isotropic flow. The model is similar to the classical model of Saffman and Turner (S&T) (1956) for the collision (agglomeration) of tracer particles suspended in a turbulent flow. However unlike S&T, the straining flow is not frozen in time persisting only for timescales ∼Kolmogorov timescale. Furthermore, we consider the collision of inertial particles as well as tracer particles, and study their behavior not only at the collision boundary but also in its vicinity. In the simulation, particles are injected continuously at the boundaries of the straining flow, the size of the straining region being typical of the Kolmogorov length scale ηK of the turbulence. For steady state conditions, we calculate the flux of particles colliding with a test particle at the centre of the straining flow and consider its dependence on the inertia of the colliding particles (characterized by the particle Stokes number, St). The model replicates the segregation and accumulation observed in DNS and in particular the maximum segregation for St ∼ 1 (where St is the ratio of the particle response time to the Kolmogorov timescale). We also calculate the contributions of the various turbulent forces in the momentum balance equation for satellite particles and show for instance that for small Stokes number, there is a balance between turbulent diffusion and turbophoresis (gradient of kinetic stresses) which in turn is responsible for the build-up of concentration at the collision boundary. As found in previous studies, for the case of inertialess tracer particles, the collision rate turns out to be significantly smaller than the S&T prediction due to a lowering of the concentration at the collision boundary compared to the fully mixed value. The increase in collision rate for St  0.5 is shown to be a combination of particle segregation (build-up of concentration near the collision boundary) and the decorrelation of the relative velocity between the local fluid and a colliding particle. The difference from the S&T value for the agglomeration kernel is shown to be a consequence of the choice of perfectly absorbing boundary conditions at collision and the influence of the time scale of the turbulence (eddy lifetime). We draw the analogy between turbulent agglomeration and particle deposition in a fully developed turbulent boundary layer.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulation method is used for the investigating of particle-laden turbulent flows in a spatially evolution of low Reynolds number axisymmetric jet, and the Eulerian–Lagrangian point-particle approach is employed in the simulation. The simulation uses an explicit coupling scheme between particles and the fluid, which considers two-way coupling between the particle and the fluid. The DNS results are compared well with experimental data with equal Reynolds number (Re = 1700). Our objects are: (i) to investigate the correlation between the particle number density and the fluctuating of fluid streamwise velocity; (ii) to examine whether the three-dimensional vortex structures in the particle-laden jet are the same as that in the free-air jet and how the particles modulate the thee-dimensional vortex structures and turbulence properties with different Stokes number particles; (iii) to discover the particle circumferential dispersion with different Stokes number particles. Our findings: (i) all the particles, regardless of their particle size, tend to preferentially accumulate in the region with large-than-mean fluid streamwise velocity; (ii) the small Stokes number particles take an important part in the modulation of three-dimensional vortex structures, but for the intermediate and larger sized particles, this modulation effect seems not so apparent; (iii) the particle circumferential dispersion is more effective for the smaller and intermediate sized particles, especially for the intermediate sized particles.  相似文献

Turbulent flow through a duct of square cross-section gives rise to off-axis secondary flows, which are known to transfer momentum between fluid layers thereby flattening the velocity profile. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of the secondary flows in the transport and dispersion of particles suspended in a turbulent square duct flow. We have numerically simulated a flow through a square duct having a Reynolds number of Reτ = 300 through discretization of the Navier–Stokes equations, and followed the trajectories of a large number of passive tracers and finite-inertia particles under a one-way coupling assumption. Snapshots of particle locations and statistics of single-particle and particle pair dispersion were analyzed. It was found that lateral mixing is enhanced for passive tracers and low-inertia particles due to the lateral advective transport that is absent in straight pipe and channels flows. Higher inertia particles accumulate close to the wall, and thus tend to mix more efficiently in the streamwise direction since a large number of the particles spend more time in a region where the mean fluid velocity is small compared to the bulk. Passive tracers tend to remain within the secondary swirling flows, circulating between the core and boundary of the duct.

The present study reports detailed statistics for velocity and transfer rates of heavy particles dispersed in turbulent boundary layers. Statistics have been extracted from a homogeneous source of data covering a large target parameter space and are used here to analyze the effects of gravity and lift on particle dispersion and deposition in a systematic way. Datasets were obtained performing Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of particle-laden turbulent upward/downward flow in a vertical channel. Six values for the particle timescale (the particle Stokes number, St) ranging three orders of magnitude were considered to analyze the deposition process as the controlling mechanism was shifting from turbulent diffusion to inertia-moderated crossing trajectories. For the particle timescales examined, gravity and lift do not influence the qualitative behavior of particles even though velocity profiles and deposition coefficients are modified in a non-monotonic fashion, reaching an optimum for St ? 15. Physical mechanisms for the different behavior are discussed. Raw data and statistics obtained from the present DNS are made available at http://cfd.cineca.it (mirror site: http://158.110.32.35/download/database) and can be used to test simple models and closure equations for multiphase RANS and Large Eddy simulations.  相似文献

The gas-particle flow in the primary air pipe (PAP) of a low NOx swirl burner was investigated using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with the discrete element method (DEM). The mathematical models were validated using the measured values obtained at the outlet of the primary pipe through a phase Doppler anemometer (PDA) system. Particles of different Stokes numbers in the primary air pipe (PAP) were investigated, and the effects of the structure of the primary air pipe and the particle–particle interaction on particle dispersion were analyzed. The results indicate that particles under the combined effects of the Venturi pipe and the spindle body are concentrated into a narrow band area and that the PAP structure can more efficiently concentrate particles with large Stokes numbers. The formed fuel rich/lean jet persists for a long distance out of the burner, thereby favoring of air-staged combustion and NOx reduction. The particle collision frequency and its fluctuation range increase as the particle Stokes number increases. The collisions among particles result in an increase of the spanwise dispersion of particles. Experimental results indicate that the models that take particle–particle collision into consideration are more able to predict particle concentration.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulations (LES) of particle-laden turbulent flows are presented in order to investigate the effects of particle response time on the dispersion patterns of a space developing flow with an obstruction, where solid particles are injected inside the wake of an obstacle [Vincont, J.Y., Simoens, S., Ayrault M., Wallace, J.M., 2000. Passive scalar dispersion in a turbulent boundary layer from a line source at the wall and downstream of an obstacle. J. Fluid Mech. 424, 127–167]. The numerical method is based on a fully explicit fractional step approach and finite-differences on Cartesian grids, using the immersed boundary method (IBM) to represent the existence of solid obstacles. Two different turbulence models have been tested, the classical Smagorinsky turbulence model and the filtered structure function model. The dispersed phase was modelled either by an Eulerian approach or a Lagrangian particle tracking scheme of solid particles with Stokes numbers in the range St = 0–25, assuming one-way coupling between the two phases. A very good agreement was observed between the Lagrangian and Eulerian approaches. The effect of particle size was found to significantly differentiate the dispersion pattern for the inhomogeneous flow over the obstacle. Although in homogeneous flows like particle-laden turbulent channels near-wall particle clustering increases monotonically with particle size, for the examined flow over an obstacle, preferential concentration effects were stronger only for an intermediate range of Stokes numbers.  相似文献

Effects of vortex pairing on particle dispersion in turbulent shear flows   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Particle dispersion in large-scale dominated turbulent shear flow is investigated numerically with special emphasis on the effects of the vortex-pairing phenomenon. The particle dispersion is visualized numerically by following the particle trajectories in a flow consisting of large vortices which are undergoing pairing interaction. The flow field is generated by a discrete vortex method. Important global and local fiow quantities from the numerical simulation compare reasonably well with experimental measurements.

For both cases of point sources with continuous particle release and an initially distributed line source, the particle dispersion results demonstrate that the extent of particle dispersion depends strongly on the Stokes number, the ratio of the particle aerodynamic response time to the characteristic time of the vortex-pairing flow field. Particles with relatively small Stokes numbers disperse laterally at approximately the saine rate as that of the fluid particles and particles with large Stokes numbers disperse much less than the fluid particles. Particles with intermediate Stokes numbers (0.5-5) may be dispersed laterally farther than the fiuid particles and may actually be flung out of the vortex structures. Due to the strong particie entrainment power, the flow during the vortex-pairing process seems to produce higher particle lateral dispersion than the pre-pairing and post-pairing flows.  相似文献

A computationally inexpensive model for tracking inertial particles through a turbulent flow is presented and applied to the turbulent flow through a square duct having a friction Reynolds number of Reτ = 300. Prior to introducing particles into the model, the flow is simulated using a lattice Boltzmann computation, which is allowed to evolve until a steady state turbulent flow is achieved. A snapshot of the flow is then stored, and the trajectories of particles are computed through the flow domain under the influence of this static probability field. Although the flow is not computationally evolving during the particle tracking simulation, the local velocity is obtained stochastically from the local probability function, thus allowing the dynamics of the turbulent flow to be resolved from the point of view of the suspended particles. Particle inertia is modeled by using a relaxation parameter based on the particle Stokes number that allows for a particle velocity history to be incorporated during each time step. Wall deposition rates and deposition patterns are obtained and exhibit a high level of agreement with previously obtained DNS computational results and experimental results for a wide range of particle inertia. These results suggest that accurate particle tracking through complex turbulent flows may be feasible given a suitable probability field, such as one obtained from a lattice Boltzmann simulation. This in turn presents a new paradigm for the rapid acquisition of particle transport statistics without the need for concurrent computations of fluid flow evolution.  相似文献

A supersonic dusty gas flow over a blunt body is considered. The mathematical model of the two-phase gas–particle flow takes into account the inter-particle collisions and the two-way coupling effects. The carrier gas is treated as a continuum, the averaged flow field of which is described by the complete Navier–Stokes equations with additional source terms modeling the reverse action of the dispersed phase. The dispersed phase is treated as a discrete set of solid particles, and its behavior is described by a kinetic Boltzmann-type equation. Particles impinging on the body surface are assumed to bounce from it. Numerical analysis is carried out for the cross-wise flow over a cylinder. The method of computational simulation represents a combination of a CFD-method for the carrier gas and a Monte Carlo method for the “gas” of particles. The dependence of the fine flow structure of the continuous and dispersed phases upon the free stream particle volume fraction αp∞ and the particle radius rp is investigated, particularly in the shock layer and in the boundary layer at the body surface. The particle volume fraction αp∞ is varied from a negligibly low value to the value αp∞ = 3 × 105 at which inter-particle collisions and two-way coupling effects are simultaneously essential. Particular attention has been given to the particles of radii close to the critical value rp1, because in this range of particle size the behavior of the particles and their effect on the carrier gas flow are not yet completely understood. An estimate of the turbulent kinetic energy produced by the particles in the shock layer is obtained.  相似文献

A series of numerical simulations were performed to investigate the distribution and deposition properties of particles in turbulent flows bounded by permeable walls using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) with a Lagrangian trajectory approach. The wall permeation speeds were taken from 10−4 to 10−2 of the bulk velocity. The directions of the permeation speed were the same at both walls, and they were inward on one wall but outward on the other wall to reserve the fluid mass. Particles with Stokes number (respecting viscous time scale) around 0.1, 1 and 10 were released in the fully developed turbulent channel flow. The particle–particle interaction and the retroaction from particles to the fluid were neglected. The fluid-phase turbulence statistical properties and particle's transport characteristics by vortexes were then analyzed in details. If the wall permeation exists, the turbulence intensities will be depressed close to the outward permeable wall but increased near the inward permeable wall. Not influenced by the wall permeation, the suspended particles with St+ ∼O(1) tend to accumulate in the less vortical zones away from the wall, while those particles in the flow regions near the outward permeable wall will distribute disregarding of the vorticity. The turbulence structures near the outward permeable wall are found to exert promotional effects on the particle deposition rate, but such effects are different for particles with various Stokes number. A distribution tendency of streamwise streaks for the deposited particles is also found on the wall imposed by the high outward permeation speed and the clustering deposition pattern is more obvious with increasing particle Stokes number.  相似文献

The USM-θmodel of Bingham fluid for dense two-phase turbulent flow was developed, which combines the second-order moment model for two-phase turbulence with the particle kinetic theory for the inter-particle collision. In this model, phases interaction and the extra term of Bingham fluid yield stress are taken into account. An algorithm for USM-θmodel in dense two-phase flow was proposed, in which the influence of particle volume fraction is accounted for. This model was used to simulate turbulent flow of Bingham fluid single-phase and dense liquid-particle two-phase in pipe. It is shown USM-θmodel has better prediction result than the five-equation model, in which the particle-particle collision is modeled by the particle kinetic theory, while the turbulence of both phase is simulated by the two-equation turbulence model. The USM-θmodel was then used to simulate the dense two-phase turbulent up flow of Bingham fluid with particles. With the increasing of the yield stress, the velocities of Bingham and particle decrease near the pipe centre. Comparing the two-phase flow of Bingham-particle with that of liquid-particle, it is found the source term of yield stress has significant effect on flow.  相似文献

The absence of sub-grid scale (SGS) motions leads to severe errors in particle pair dynamics, which represents a great challenge to the large eddy simulation of particle-laden turbulent flow. In order to address this issue, data from direct numerical simulation (DNS) of homogenous isotropic turbulence coupled with Lagrangian particle tracking are used as a benchmark to evaluate the corresponding results of filtered DNS (FDNS). It is found that the filtering process in FDNS will lead to a non-monotonic variation of the particle collision statistics, including radial distribution function, radial relative velocity, and the collision kernel. The peak of radial distribution function shifts to the large-inertia region due to the lack of SGS motions, and the analysis of the local flowstructure characteristic variable at particle position indicates that the most effective interaction scale between particles and fluid eddies is increased in FDNS. Moreover, this scale shifting has an obvious effect on the odd-order moments of the probability density function of radial relative velocity, i.e. the skewness, which exhibits a strong correlation to the variance of radial distribution function in FDNS. As a whole, the radial distribution function, together with radial relative velocity, can compensate the SGS effects for the collision kernel in FDNS when the Stokes number based on the Kolmogorov time scale is greater than 3.0. However, it still leaves considerable errors for \({ St}_\mathrm{k }<3.0\).  相似文献

An experimental investigation of turbulent heat transfer in vertical upward and downward supercritical CO2 flow was conducted in a circular tube with an inner diameter of 4.5 mm. The experiments were performed for bulk fluid temperatures from 29 to 115 °C, pressures from 74.6 to 102.6 bar, local wall heat fluxes from 38 to 234 kW/m2, and mass fluxes from 208 to 874 kg/m2 s. At a moderate wall heat flux and low mass flux, the wall temperature had a noticeable peak value for vertical upward flow, but increased monotonically along the flow direction without a peak value for downward flow. The ratios of the experimental Nusselt number to the value obtained from a reference correlation were compared with Bo* and q+ distributions to observe the buoyancy and flow-acceleration effects on heat transfer. In the experimental range of this study, the flow acceleration predominantly affected the heat-transfer phenomena. Based on an analysis of the shear-stress distribution in the turbulent boundary layer and the significant variation of the specific heat across the turbulent boundary layer, a new heat-transfer correlation for vertical upward and downward flow of supercritical pressurized fluid was developed; this correlation agreed with various experimental datasets within ±30%.  相似文献

The variation of the drag (CD) and lift coefficients (CL) of two fixed solid spherical particles placed at different positions relative each other is studied. Simulations are carried out for particle Reynolds numbers of 50, 100 and 200 and the particle position is defined by the angle between the line connecting the centers of the particles and the free-stream direction (α) and the separation distance (d0) between the particles. The flow around the particles is simulated using two different methods; the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM), using two different computational codes, and a conventional finite difference approach, where the Volume of Solid Method (VOS) is used to represent the particles. Comparisons with available numerical and experimental data show that both methods can be used to accurately resolve the flow field around particles and calculate the forces the particles are subjected to. Independent of the Reynolds number, the largest change in drag, as compared to the single particle case, occurs for particles placed in tandem formation. Compared to a single particle, the drag reduction for the secondary particle in tandem arrangement is as high as 60%, 70% and 80% for Re = 50, 100 and 200, respectively. The development of the recirculation zone is found to have a significant influence on the drag force. Depending on the flow situation in-between the particles for various particle arrangements, attraction and repulsion forces are detected due to low and high pressure regions, respectively. The results show that the inter-particle forces are not negligible even under very dilute conditions.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) and experimental data have shown that inertial particles exhibit concentration peaks in isothermal turbulent boundary layers, whereas tracer-like particles remain well mixed in the domain. It is therefore expected that the interactions between turbulence and thermophoresis will be strong in particle-laden flows where walls and carrier fluid are at significantly different temperatures. To capture turbulent particle dispersion with active thermophoresis, a coupled CFD-Lagrangian continuous random walk (CRW) model is developed. The model uses 3D mean flow velocities obtained from the Fluent 6.3 CFD code, to which are added turbulent fluid velocities derived from the normalized Langevin equation which accounts for turbulence inhomogeneities. The mean thermophoretic force is included as a body force on the particle following the Talbot formulation. Validation of the model is performed against recent integral thermophoretic deposition data in long pipes as well as the TUBA TT28 test with its detailed local deposition measurements. In all cases, the agreement with the data is very good. In separate parametric studies in a hypothetical cooled channel flow, it is found that turbulence strongly enhances thermophoretic deposition of particles with dimensionless relaxation times τ+ of order 1 or more. On the other hand, the thermophoretic deposition of very small inertia particles (τ+ < 0.2) in the asymptotic region far from the injection point tends to that which characterizes stagnant flow conditions, in agreement with the DNS results of Thakurta et al.  相似文献

A direct numerical simulation was used along with a Lagrangian particle tracking technique to study particle motion in a horizontal, spatially developing turbulent boundary layer along an upper-wall (with terminal velocity directed away from the wall). The objective of the research was to study particle diffusion, dispersion, reflection, and mean velocity in the context of two parametric studies: one investigated the effect of the drift parameter (the ratio of particle terminal velocity to fluid friction velocity) for a fixed and finite particle inertia, and the second varied the drift parameter and particle inertia by the same amount (i.e. for a constant Froude number). A range of drift parameters from 10−4 to 100 were considered for both cases. The particles were injected into the simulation at a height of four wall units for several evenly distributed points across the span and a perfectly elastic wall collision was specified at one wall unit.Statistics collected along the particle trajectories demonstrated a transition in particle movement from one that is dominated by diffusion to one that is dominated by gravity. For small and intermediate sized particles (i.e. ones with outer Stokes numbers and drift parameters much less than unity) transverse diffusion away from the wall dominated particle motion. However, preferential concentration is seen near the wall for intermediate-sized particles due to inhomogeneous turbulence effects (turbophoresis), consistent with previous channel flow studies. Particle–wall collision statistics indicated that impact velocities tended to increase with increasing terminal velocity for small and moderate inertias, after which initial conditions become important. Finally, high relative velocity fluctuations (compared to terminal velocity) were found as particle inertia increased, and were well described with a quasi-one-dimensional fluctuation model.  相似文献

The continuum equations for a dilute particle distribution in inhomogeneous turbulence are tested against results from a Langevin particle tracking simulation. Reeks’ version of the kinetic theory is used to generate the mass, momentum and kinetic stress equations for the particle distribution. The particle tracking data are used to directly evaluate the dispersion tensors λ and μ which serve as closure relations for the continuum equations. These exact forms are compared to approximate, local forms. Even for low Stokes numbers (corresponding to low particle inertia defined by τ/τp ? 1), the tensor λ is strongly affected by the inhomogeneity and depends on turbulence parameters in the volume corresponding to the particle path dispersion over the particle Lagrangian integral timescale τ. In contrast, the locally homogeneous form of the velocity dispersion tensor μ is a sufficient approximation, since it depends on the dispersion volume over the much smaller particle relaxation time τp. It is demonstrated that the body force due to the dispersion vector γ cannot be neglected. In the limit of passive tracers (zero stopping distance), γ is equal to the gradient of λ, if the physical setting is such that we can invoke constant tracer density in this limit.  相似文献
