We provide a unifying geometric framework for the analysis of general classes of duality schemes and penalty methods for nonconvex constrained optimization problems. We present a separation result for nonconvex sets via general concave surfaces. We use this separation result to provide necessary and sufficient conditions for establishing strong duality between geometric primal and dual problems. Using the primal function of a constrained optimization problem, we apply our results both in the analysis of duality schemes constructed using augmented Lagrangian functions, and in establishing necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of penalty methods.  相似文献

We study convergence properties of a modified subgradient algorithm, applied to the dual problem defined by the sharp augmented Lagrangian. The primal problem we consider is nonconvex and nondifferentiable, with equality constraints. We obtain primal and dual convergence results, as well as a condition for existence of a dual solution. Using a practical selection of the step-size parameters, we demonstrate the algorithm and its advantages on test problems, including an integer programming and an optimal control problem. *Partially Supported by 2003 UniSA ITEE Small Research Grant Ero2. Quadratically constrained quadratic programming is an important class of optimization problems. We consider the case with one quadratic constraint. Since both the objective function and its constraint can be neither convex nor concave, it is also known as the ‘generalized trust region subproblem.’ The theory and algorithms for this problem have been well studied under the Slater condition. In this article, we analyse the duality property between the primal problem and its Lagrangian dual problem, and discuss the attainability of the optimal primal solution without the Slater condition. The relations between the Lagrangian dual and semidefinite programming dual is also given.  相似文献

Consider the utilization of a Lagrangian dual method which is convergent for consistent convex optimization problems. When it is used to solve an infeasible optimization problem, its inconsistency will then manifest itself through the divergence of the sequence of dual iterates. Will then the sequence of primal subproblem solutions still yield relevant information regarding the primal program? We answer this question in the affirmative for a convex program and an associated subgradient algorithm for its Lagrange dual. We show that the primal–dual pair of programs corresponding to an associated homogeneous dual function is in turn associated with a saddle-point problem, in which—in the inconsistent case—the primal part amounts to finding a solution in the primal space such that the Euclidean norm of the infeasibility in the relaxed constraints is minimized; the dual part amounts to identifying a feasible steepest ascent direction for the Lagrangian dual function. We present convergence results for a conditional \(\varepsilon \)-subgradient optimization algorithm applied to the Lagrangian dual problem, and the construction of an ergodic sequence of primal subproblem solutions; this composite algorithm yields convergence of the primal–dual sequence to the set of saddle-points of the associated homogeneous Lagrangian function; for linear programs, convergence to the subset in which the primal objective is at minimum is also achieved.  相似文献

Although the Lagrangian method is a powerful dual search approach in integer programming, it often fails to identify an optimal solution of the primal problem. The p-th power Lagrangian method developed in this paper offers a success guarantee for the dual search in generating an optimal solution of the primal integer programming problem in an equivalent setting via two key transformations. One other prominent feature of the p-th power Lagrangian method is that the dual search only involves a one-dimensional search within [0,1]. Some potential applications of the method as well as the issue of its implementation are discussed.  相似文献

We consider in this paper the Lagrangian dual method for solving general integer programming. New properties of Lagrangian duality are derived by a means of perturbation analysis. In particular, a necessary and sufficient condition for a primal optimal solution to be generated by the Lagrangian relaxation is obtained. The solution properties of Lagrangian relaxation problem are studied systematically. To overcome the difficulties caused by duality gap between the primal problem and the dual problem, we introduce an equivalent reformulation for the primal problem via applying a pth power to the constraints. We prove that this reformulation possesses an asymptotic strong duality property. Primal feasibility and primal optimality of the Lagrangian relaxation problems can be achieved in this reformulation when the parameter p is larger than a threshold value, thus ensuring the existence of an optimal primal-dual pair. We further show that duality gap for this partial pth power reformulation is a strictly decreasing function of p in the case of a single constraint. A primal-dual version of the proximal point algorithm is developed for linearly constrained convex programming problems. The algorithm is an iterative method to find a saddle point of the Lagrangian of the problem. At each iteration of the algorithm, we compute an approximate saddle point of the Lagrangian function augmented by quadratic proximal terms of both primal and dual variables. Specifically, we first minimize the function with respect to the primal variables and then approximately maximize the resulting function of the dual variables. The merit of this approach exists in the fact that the latter function is differentiable and the maximization of this function is subject to no constraints. We discuss convergence properties of the algorithm and report some numerical results for network flow problems with separable quadratic costs.  相似文献

We study subgradient methods for computing the saddle points of a convex-concave function. Our motivation comes from networking applications where dual and primal-dual subgradient methods have attracted much attention in the design of decentralized network protocols. We first present a subgradient algorithm for generating approximate saddle points and provide per-iteration convergence rate estimates on the constructed solutions. We then focus on Lagrangian duality, where we consider a convex primal optimization problem and its Lagrangian dual problem, and generate approximate primal-dual optimal solutions as approximate saddle points of the Lagrangian function. We present a variation of our subgradient method under the Slater constraint qualification and provide stronger estimates on the convergence rate of the generated primal sequences. In particular, we provide bounds on the amount of feasibility violation and on the primal objective function values at the approximate solutions. Our algorithm is particularly well-suited for problems where the subgradient of the dual function cannot be evaluated easily (equivalently, the minimum of the Lagrangian function at a dual solution cannot be computed efficiently), thus impeding the use of dual subgradient methods.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for a zero duality gap between a primal optimization problem and its generalized augmented Lagrangian dual problems. The condition is mainly expressed in the form of the lower semicontinuity of a perturbation function at the origin. For a constrained optimization problem, a general equivalence is established for zero duality gap properties defined by a general nonlinear Lagrangian dual problem and a generalized augmented Lagrangian dual problem, respectively. For a constrained optimization problem with both equality and inequality constraints, we prove that first-order and second-order necessary optimality conditions of the augmented Lagrangian problems with a convex quadratic augmenting function converge to that of the original constrained program. For a mathematical program with only equality constraints, we show that the second-order necessary conditions of general augmented Lagrangian problems with a convex augmenting function converge to that of the original constrained program. This research is supported by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong (PolyU B-Q359.)  相似文献

A solution concept of fuzzy optimization problems, which is essentially similar to the notion of Pareto optimal solution (nondominated solution) in multiobjective programming problems, is introduced by imposing a partial ordering on the set of all fuzzy numbers. We also introduce a concept of fuzzy scalar (inner) product based on the positive and negative parts of fuzzy numbers. Then the fuzzy-valued Lagrangian function and the fuzzy-valued Lagrangian dual function for the fuzzy optimization problem are proposed via the concept of fuzzy scalar product. Under these settings, the weak and strong duality theorems for fuzzy optimization problems can be elicited. We show that there is no duality gap between the primal and dual fuzzy optimization problems under suitable assumptions for fuzzy-valued functions.  相似文献

We consider the separable nonlinear and strictly convex single-commodity network flow problem (SSCNFP). We develop a computational scheme for generating a primal feasible solution from any Lagrangian dual vector; this is referred to as “early primal recovery”. It is motivated by the desire to obtain a primal feasible vector before convergence of a Lagrangian scheme; such a vector is not available from a Lagrangian dual vector unless it is optimal. The scheme is constructed such that if we apply it from a sequence of Lagrangian dual vectors that converge to an optimal one, then the resulting primal (feasible) vectors converge to the unique optimal primal flow vector. It is therefore also a convergent Lagrangian heuristic, akin to those primarily devised within the field of combinatorial optimization but with the contrasting and striking advantage that it is guaranteed to yield a primal optimal solution in the limit. Thereby we also gain access to a new stopping criterion for any Lagrangian dual algorithm for the problem, which is of interest in particular if the SSCNFP arises as a subproblem in a more complex model. We construct instances of convergent Lagrangian heuristics that are based on graph searches within the residual graph, and therefore are efficiently implementable; in particular we consider two shortest path based heuristics that are based on the optimality conditions of the original problem. Numerical experiments report on the relative efficiency and accuracy of the various schemes.  相似文献

In solving certain optimization problems, the corresponding Lagrangian dual problem is often solved simply because in these problems the dual problem is easier to solve than the original primal problem. Another reason for their solution is the implication of the weak duality theorem which suggests that under certain conditions the optimal dual function value is smaller than or equal to the optimal primal objective value. The dual problem is a special case of a bilevel programming problem involving Lagrange multipliers as upper-level variables and decision variables as lower-level variables. Another interesting aspect of dual problems is that both lower and upper-level optimization problems involve only box constraints and no other equality of inequality constraints. In this paper, we propose a coevolutionary dual optimization (CEDO) algorithm for co-evolving two populations—one involving Lagrange multipliers and other involving decision variables—to find the dual solution. On 11 test problems taken from the optimization literature, we demonstrate the efficacy of CEDO algorithm by comparing it with a couple of nested smooth and nonsmooth algorithms and a couple of previously suggested coevolutionary algorithms. The performance of CEDO algorithm is also compared with two classical methods involving nonsmooth (bundle) optimization methods. As a by-product, we analyze the test problems to find their associated duality gap and classify them into three categories having zero, finite or infinite duality gaps. The development of a coevolutionary approach, revealing the presence or absence of duality gap in a number of commonly-used test problems, and efficacy of the proposed coevolutionary algorithm compared to usual nested smooth and nonsmooth algorithms and other existing coevolutionary approaches remain as the hallmark of the current study.  相似文献

This paper aims to establish duality and exact penalization results for the primal problem of minimizing an extended real-valued function in a reflexive Banach space in terms of a valley-at-0 augmented Lagrangian function. It is shown that every weak limit point of a sequence of optimal solutions generated by the valley-at-0 augmented Lagrangian problems is a solution of the original problem. A zero duality gap property and an exact penalization representation between the primal problem and the valley-at-0 augmented Lagrangian dual problem are obtained. These results are then applied to an inequality and equality constrained optimization problem in infinite-dimensional spaces and variational problems in Sobolev spaces, respectively. New Bundle Methods for Solving Lagrangian Relaxation Dual Problems   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Bundle methods have been used frequently to solve nonsmooth optimization problems. In these methods, subgradient directions from past iterations are accumulated in a bundle, and a trial direction is obtained by performing quadratic programming based on the information contained in the bundle. A line search is then performed along the trial direction, generating a serious step if the function value is improved by or a null step otherwise. Bundle methods have been used to maximize the nonsmooth dual function in Lagrangian relaxation for integer optimization problems, where the subgradients are obtained by minimizing the performance index of the relaxed problem. This paper improves bundle methods by making good use of near-minimum solutions that are obtained while solving the relaxed problem. The bundle information is thus enriched, leading to better search directions and less number of null steps. Furthermore, a simplified bundle method is developed, where a fuzzy rule is used to combine linearly directions from near-minimum solutions, replacing quadratic programming and line search. When the simplified bundle method is specialized to an important class of problems where the relaxed problem can be solved by using dynamic programming, fuzzy dynamic programming is developed to obtain efficiently near-optimal solutions and their weights for the linear combination. This method is then applied to job shop scheduling problems, leading to better performance than previously reported in the literature.  相似文献

Conjugate maps and duality in multiobjective optimization   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
This paper considers duality in convex vector optimization. A vector optimization problem requires one to find all the efficient points of the attainable value set for given multiple objective functions. Embedding the primal problem into a family of perturbed problems enables one to define a dual problem in terms of the conjugate map of the perturbed objective function. Every solution of the stable primal problem is associated with a certain solution of the dual problem, which is characterized as a subgradient of the perturbed efficient value map. This pair of solutions also provides a saddle point of the Lagrangian map.  相似文献

In this paper we present augmented Lagrangians for nonconvex minimization problems with equality constraints. We construct a dual problem with respect to the presented here Lagrangian, give the saddle point optimality conditions and obtain strong duality results. We use these results and modify the subgradient and cutting plane methods for solving the dual problem constructed. Algorithms proposed in this paper have some advantages. We do not use any convexity and differentiability conditions, and show that the dual problem is always concave regardless of properties the primal problem satisfies. The subgradient of the dual function along which its value increases is calculated without solving any additional problem. In contrast with the penalty or multiplier methods, for improving the value of the dual function, one need not to take the penalty like parameter to infinity in the new methods. In both methods the value of the dual function strongly increases at each iteration. In the contrast, by using the primal-dual gap, the proposed algorithms possess a natural stopping criteria. The convergence theorem for the subgradient method is also presented.  相似文献

We introduce new augmented Lagrangian algorithms for linear programming which provide faster global convergence rates than the augmented algorithm of Polyak and Treti'akov. Our algorithm shares the same properties as the Polyak-Treti'akov algorithm in that it terminates in finitely many iterations and obtains both primal and dual optimal solutions. We present an implementable version of the algorithm which requires only approximate minimization at each iteration. We provide a global convergence rate for this version of the algorithm and show that the primal and dual points generated by the algorithm converge to the primal and dual optimal set, respectively.  相似文献

Augmented Lagrangian duality provides zero duality gap and saddle point properties for nonconvex optimization. On the basis of this duality, subgradient-like methods can be applied to the (convex) dual of the original problem. These methods usually recover the optimal value of the problem, but may fail to provide a primal solution. We prove that the recovery of a primal solution by such methods can be characterized in terms of (i) the differentiability properties of the dual function and (ii) the exact penalty properties of the primal-dual pair. We also connect the property of finite termination with exact penalty properties of the dual pair. In order to establish these facts, we associate the primal-dual pair to a penalty map. This map, which we introduce here, is a convex and globally Lipschitz function and its epigraph encapsulates information on both primal and dual solution sets.  相似文献

pth Power Lagrangian Method for Integer Programming   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
When does there exist an optimal generating Lagrangian multiplier vector (that generates an optimal solution of an integer programming problem in a Lagrangian relaxation formulation), and in cases of nonexistence, can we produce the existence in some other equivalent representation space? Under what conditions does there exist an optimal primal-dual pair in integer programming? This paper considers both questions. A theoretical characterization of the perturbation function in integer programming yields a new insight on the existence of an optimal generating Lagrangian multiplier vector, the existence of an optimal primal-dual pair, and the duality gap. The proposed pth power Lagrangian method convexifies the perturbation function and guarantees the existence of an optimal generating Lagrangian multiplier vector. A condition for the existence of an optimal primal-dual pair is given for the Lagrangian relaxation method to be successful in identifying an optimal solution of the primal problem via the maximization of the Lagrangian dual. The existence of an optimal primal-dual pair is assured for cases with a single Lagrangian constraint, while adopting the pth power Lagrangian method. This paper then shows that an integer programming problem with multiple constraints can be always converted into an equivalent form with a single surrogate constraint. Therefore, success of a dual search is guaranteed for a general class of finite integer programming problems with a prominent feature of a one-dimensional dual search.  相似文献
