A methacrylate‐based crosslinking hyperbranced polymers have been synthesized through initiator‐fragment incorporation radical polymerization and used for the temperature stable electro‐optic (EO) polymer application. This polymer consists of methyl methacrylate, 2‐metacryloxyethyl isocyanate, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) monomers. The use of EGDMA as a bifunctional unit resulted in the solvent‐soluble crosslinking hyperbranched chain, so that the EO polymer enhanced glass transition temperatures. A phenyl vinylene thiophene vinylene bridge nonlinear optical chromophore was attached to the polymer backbone as the side‐chain by a post‐functionalization reaction. The loading concentration of the chromophore was varied between 30 and 50 wt % by simply changing the mixing ratio of the precursor polymer to the chromophore. The synthesized EO polymers produced optical quality films with a light propagation loss of 0.61 dB/cm in a slab waveguide at 1.31 μm. The electrically poled film had an EO coefficient (r33) of 139 pm/V at 1.31 μm. The EO crosslinking hyperbranced polymer had a high‐glass transition temperature of 170 °C, and exhibited excellent temporal stability of the EO activity at 85 °C for 500 h. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were functionalized with 2‐hydroxyethyl benzocyclobutene (BCB‐EO) through a Diels–Alder cycloaddition reaction. The functionalized MWNTs were utilized for the surface initiated ring opening (ROP) catalyzed and anionic polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) and ethylene oxide (EO), respectively. The kinetics of the ROP of ε‐CL was monitored through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) which revealed that the polymerization proceeds very fast as compared to that of EO and that both polymerizations could be controlled with time. 1H NMR, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy, TGA, DSC, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed for the characterization of these polymer/CNT hybrids. DSC results showed that a remarkable nucleation effect is produced by MWNTs that reduced the supercooling needed for crystallization of both PεCL and PEO. Furthermore, the isothermal crystallization kinetics of the grafted PεCL and PEO was substantially accelerated compared to the neat polymers. The strong impact on the nucleation and crystallization kinetics is attributed to the covalent MWNT‐polymer bonding. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New multifunctional PEG-grafted chitosan copolymers possessing both amino and carboxyl (4) or formyl (5) groups were synthesized by the grafting reaction method between chitosan and heterobifunctional PEG from anionic polymerization of ethylene oxide. Completion of the reactions and characterization of the resulting polymers were demonstrated by 1H NMR, FT-IR and GPC studies. The multifunctional polymers may have potential utility in gene/drug co-delivery or heterogeneous catalysis.  相似文献

Novel star‐like hyperbranched polymers with amphiphilic arms were synthesized via three steps. Hyperbranched poly(amido amine)s containing secondary amine and hydroxyl groups were successfully synthesized via Michael addition polymerization of triacrylamide (TT) and 3‐amino‐1,2‐propanediol (APD) with feed molar ratio of 1:2. 1H, 13C, and HSQC NMR techniques were used to clarify polymerization mechanism and the structures of the resultant hyperbranched polymers. Methoxyl poly(ethylene oxide) acrylate (A‐MPEO) and carboxylic acid‐terminated poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) were sequentially reacted with secondary amine and hydroxyl group, and the core–shell structures with poly(1TT‐2APD) as core and two distinguishing polymer chains, PEO and PCL, as shell were constructed. The star‐like hyperbranched polymers have different sizes in dimethyl sulfonate, chloroform, and deionized water, which were characterized by DLS and 1H NMR. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A well‐defined amphiphilic copolymer brush with poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain and polystyrene as the side chain was successfully prepared by a combination of anionic polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The glycidol was first protected by ethyl vinyl ether to form 2,3‐epoxypropyl‐1‐ethoxyethyl ether and then copolymerized with ethylene oxide by the initiation of a mixture of diphenylmethylpotassium and triethylene glycol to give the well‐defined polymer poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐2,3‐epoxypropyl‐1‐ethoxyethyl ether); the latter was hydrolyzed under acidic conditions, and then the recovered copolymer of ethylene oxide and glycidol {poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐glycidol) [poly(EO‐co‐Gly)]} with multiple pending hydroxymethyl groups was esterified with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to produce the macro‐ATRP initiator [poly(EO‐co‐Gly)(ATRP). The latter was used to initiate the polymerization of styrene to form the amphiphilic copolymer brushes. The object products and intermediates were characterized with 1H NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared, and size exclusion chromatography in detail. In all cases, the molecular weight distribution of the copolymer brushes was rather narrow (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.2), and the linear dependence of ln[M0]/[M] (where [M0] is the initial monomer concentration and [M] is the monomer concentration at a certain time) on time demonstrated that the styrene polymerization was well controlled. This method has universal significance for the preparation of copolymer brushes with hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Replaceable sieving polymers are the fundamental component for high‐resolution nucleic acids separation in CE. The choice of polymer and its physical properties play significant roles in influencing separation performance. Recently, reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization has been shown to be a versatile polymerization technique capable of yielding well‐defined polymers previously unattainable by conventional free‐radical polymerization. In this study, a high molecular weight poly‐(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) at 765 000 gmol?1 with a polydispersity index of 1.55 was successfully synthesized with the use of chain transfer agent—2‐propionic acidyl butyl trithiocarbonate in a multistep sequential RAFT polymerization approach. This study represents the first demonstration of RAFT polymerization for synthesizing polymers with the molecular weight range suitable for high‐resolution DNA separation in sieving electrophoresis. Adjustment of pH in the reaction was found to be crucial for the successful RAFT polymerization of high molecular weight polymer as the buffered condition minimizes the effect of hydrolysis and aminolysis commonly associated with trithiocarbonate chain transfer agents. The separation efficiency of 2‐propionic acidyl butyl trithiocarbonate PDMA was found to have marginally superior separation performance compared to a commercial PDMA formulation, POP?‐CAP, of similar molecular weight range.  相似文献

Methacrylate‐functionalized poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐ethylene carbonate) macromonomers were prepared in two steps by the anionic ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene carbonate at 180 °C, with potassium methoxide as the initiator, followed by the reaction of the terminal hydroxyl groups of the polymers with methacryloyl chloride. The molecular weight of the polymer went through a maximum after approximately 45 min of polymerization, and the content of ethylene carbonate units in the polymer decreased with the reaction time. A polymer having a number‐average molecular weight of 2650 g mol?1 and an ethylene carbonate content of 28 mol % was selected and used to prepare a macromonomer, which was subsequently polymerized by UV irradiation in the presence of different concentrations of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide salt. The resulting self‐supportive crosslinked polymer electrolyte membranes reached ionic conductivities of 6.3 × 10?6 S cm?1 at 20 °C. The coordination of the lithium ions by both the ether and carbonate oxygens in the polymer structure was indicated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biotinylated polymers with side‐chain aldehydes were prepared for use as multifunctional scaffolds. Two different biotin‐containing chain transfer agents (CTAs) and an aldehyde‐containing monomer, 6‐oxohexyl acrylate (6OHA), are synthesized. Poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGA) and 6OHA are copolymerized by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in the presence of the biotinylated CTAs. The resulting polymers are analyzed by GPC and1H NMR spectroscopy. The polymer end groups contained a disulfide bond, which could be readily reduced in solution to remove the biotin. Reactivity of the aldehyde side chains is demonstrated by oxime and hydrazone formation at the polymer side chains, and conjugate formation of fluorescently labeled polymers with streptavidin is investigated by gel electrophoresis.

Graft copolymers consisting of polyamide 12 or poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) as backbone polymers and side chains of poly(ethylene oxide) have been synthesized. The amide and hydroxyl groups of the backbone polymers were used as initiation sites for the polymerization of ethylene oxide (EO). Potassium tert-butoxide was used for ionization of the active groups, and the polymerization of EO was carried out in dimethyl sulfoxide. The graft copolymers were characterized with respect to molecular weight and composition using elemental analysis, 1H-NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and FTIR. The size of the side chains varied between 300 and 1000 g/mol. Thermal properties were examined by DSC. The graft copolymers showed increasing crystallinity and increasing melt temperature with increasing molecular weight of the side chains. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated with 2‐pyrrolidinone and n‐dodecyl mercaptan (R‐SH) has been explored. This polymerization system showed “living” characteristics; for example, the molecular weight of the resulting polymers increased with reaction time by gel permeation chromatographic analysis. Also, the polymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR techniques. The polymer end with the iniferter structures was found. By the initial‐rate method, the polymerization rate depended on [2‐pyrrolidinone]1.0 and [R‐SH]0. Combining the structure analysis and the polymerization‐rate expression, a possible mechanism was proposed. n‐Dodecyl mercaptan served dual roles—as a catalyst at low conversion and as a chain‐transfer agent at high conversion. Finally, the thermal properties were studied, and the glass‐transition temperature and thermal‐degradation temperature were, respectively, 25 and 80–100 °C higher than that of the azobisisobutyronitrile system. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A versatile strategy for the preparation of end‐functional polymers and block copolymers by radical exchange reactions is described. For this purpose, first polystyrene with 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl end group (PS‐TEMPO) is prepared by nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP). In the subsequent step, these polymers are heated to 130 °C in the presence of independently prepared TEMPO derivatives bearing hydroxyl, azide and carboxylic acid functionalities, and polymers such as poly(ethylene glycol) (TEMPO‐PEG) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (TEMPO‐PCL). Due to the simultaneous radical generation and reversible termination of the polymer radical, TEMPO moiety on polystyrene is replaced to form the corresponding end‐functional polymers and block copolymers. The intermediates and final polymers are characterized by 1H NMR, UV, IR, and GPC measurements. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019 , 57, 2387–2395  相似文献

The synthesis of diblock as well as gradient copolymers of N,N‐diethyl glycidyl amine (DEGA) with ethylene oxide (EO) via anionic ring‐opening polymerization is presented. The polymers exhibit low polydispersities (≤1.13) and molecular weights in the range of 3300–10 200 g mol−1. In PEG‐co‐PDEGA copolymers, incorporation of 4%–29% DEGA results in tailorable cloud point temperatures in aqueous solution and melting points depending on DEGA content. mPEG‐b‐PDEGA block copolymers can be quaternized to generate cationic double‐hydrophilic polyelectrolyte copolymers with polyether backbone. Furthermore, mPEG‐b‐PDEGA has been used as dual reducing and capping agent for gold nanoparticle synthesis.  相似文献

The synthesis of block copolymers via polymer conjugation of well‐defined building blocks offers excellent control over the structures obtained, but often several coupling strategies need to be explored to find an efficient one depending on the building blocks. To facilitate the synthesis of polymers with adjustable functional end‐groups for polymer conjugation, we report on the combination of activated ester chemistry with RAFT polymerization using a chain transfer agent (CTA) with a pentafluorophenyl ester (PFP‐CTA), which allows for flexible functionalization of either the CTA prior to polymerization or the obtained polymer after polymerization. Different polymethacrylates, namely PMMA, P(t‐BuMA) and PDEGMEMA, were synthesized with an alkyne‐CTA obtained from the aminolysis of the PFP‐CTA with propargylamine, and the successful incorporation of the alkyne moiety could be shown via 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and MALDI TOF MS. Further, the reactive α‐end‐groups of polymers synthesized using the unmodified PFP‐CTA could be converted into azide and alkyne end‐groups after polymerization, and the high functionalization efficiencies could be demonstrated via successful coupling of the resulting polymers via CuAAC. Thus, the PFP‐CTA allows for high combinatory flexibility in polymer synthesis facilitating polymer conjugation as useful method for the synthesis of block copolymers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The properties of polymeric materials are dictated not only by their composition but also by their molecular architecture. Here, by employing brush‐first ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), norbornene‐terminated poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macromonomers ( MM‐n , linear architecture), bottlebrush polymers ( Brush‐n , comb architecture), and brush‐arm star polymers ( BASP‐n , star architecture), where n indicates the average degree of polymerization (DP) of PEO, are synthesized. The impact of architecture on the thermal properties and Li+ conductivities for this series of PEO architectures is investigated. Notably, in polymers bearing PEO with the highest degree of polymerization, irrespective of differences in architecture and molecular weight (~100‐fold differences), electrolytes with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) as an Li+ source exhibit normalized ionic conductivities (σn) within only 4.9 times difference (σn = 29.8 × 10?5 S cm?1 for MM‐45 and σn = 6.07 × 10?5 S cm?1 for BASP‐45 ) at a concentration of Li+ r = [Li+]/[EO] = 1/12 at 50 °C. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new method to prepare the polymer electrolytes for lithium‐ion batteries is proposed. The polymer electrolytes were prepared by reacting poly(phosphazene)s (MEEPP) having 2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethoxy and 2‐(phenoxy)ethoxy units with 2,4,6‐tris[bis(methoxymethyl)amino]‐1,3,5‐triazine (CYMEL) as a cross‐linking agent. This method is simple and reliable for controlling the cross‐linking extent, thereby providing a straightforward way to produce a flexible polymer electrolyte membrane. The 6 mol % cross‐linked polymer electrolyte (ethylene oxide unit (EO)/Li = 24:1) exhibited a maximum ionic conductivity of 5.36 × 10?5 S cm?1 at 100 °C. The 7Li linewidths of solid‐state static NMR showed that the ionic conductivity was strongly related to polymer segment motion. Moreover, the electrochemical stability of the MEEPP polymer electrolytes increased with an increasing extent of cross‐linking, the highest oxidation voltage of which reached as high as 7.0 V. Moreover, phenoxy‐containing polyphosphazenes are very useful model polymers to study the relationship between the polymer flexibility; that is, the cross‐linking extent and the mobility of metal ions. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: The possibility of transforming a living anionic polymerization into a stable radical‐mediated radical polymerization (SFRP) was demonstrated. For this purpose, 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐N‐oxyl (TEMPO) alcoholate, formed by a one‐electron redox reaction between potassium naphthalene and TEMPO, was used to initiate the living anionic polymerization of ethylene oxide (EO). Poly(ethylene oxide) obtained in this way possessed TEMPO terminal units and was subsequently used as an initiator for the SFRP of styrene to give block copolymers.

A one‐electron redox reaction gives rise to TEMPO alcoholate, which is able to initiate the living anionic polymerization of ethylene oxide (EO).  相似文献

A series of ethylene–vinyl chloride‐like copolymers were prepared by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The route to these materials included the bulk polymerization of 5‐chlorocyclooctene and 5,6‐dichlorocyclooctene with the first‐generation Grubbs' catalyst, followed by diimide hydrogenation of the resulting unsaturated polymers. In addition, the amount of chlorine in these materials was varied by the copolymerization of 5‐chlorocyclooctene with cyclooctene. These materials were fully characterized by NMR (1H and 13C), gel permeation chromatography, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Finally, hydroboration was carried out on the ROMP product of 5‐chlorocyclooctene to yield a polymer, which was effectively a vinyl alcohol–vinyl chloride–ethylene terpolymer. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hyperbranched polymethacrylates were prepared by means of oxyanionic vinyl polymerization of commercially available monomers, including hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEG‐MA). Hyperbranched polymethacrylates with high molecular weight were obtained with the complex of potassium hydride and 18‐crown‐6 as the initiator. The effect of 18‐crown‐6 is very important, and only oligomer can be obtained in the polymerization without 18‐crown‐6. The molecular structure of the hyperbranched polymers was confirmed with 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. The ratio of initiator to monomer significantly affects the architecture of the resultant polymers. When the ratio of initiator to monomer equals 1 in the oxyanionic vinyl polymerization of HEMA, the degree of branching of the resulting polymer was calculated to be around 0.49. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of hybrid star‐shaped polymers was carried out by atom transfer radical polymerization of n‐butyl acrylate from a well‐defined multifunctional titanium‐oxo‐cluster initiator. Conditions were identified to prevent possible side reactions among monomer, polymer, and the titanium‐oxo‐cluster ligands. Polymerizations provided linear first‐order kinetics and the evolution of the experimental molecular weight is also linear with the conversion. 1H DOSY NMR and cleavage of the polymeric branches from the multifunctional initiator by hydrolysis were used to (i) prove the star‐shaped structure of the polymer, and (ii) demonstrate that the shoulder observed on size exclusion chromatograms is not due to a noncontrolled polymerization but to ungrafting of polymeric branches during analysis. Rheological properties of the hybrid star‐shaped poly(n‐butyl acrylate) were studied in the linear regime and show that the Ti‐oxo‐cluster not only increases significantly the viscosity of the polymer relative to its ungrafted arm but has a rheological signature which is qualitatively different from that of stars with organic cores suggesting that the Ti cluster reduces significantly the molecular mobility of the star. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of a library of amphiphilic random copolymers from a single reactive pre‐polymer and their self‐assembly is reported. Post‐polymerization modifications of the parent polymer containing pendant N‐hydroxy succinimide (NHS) ester groups with various oligooxyethylene (OE) amines produce amphiphilic random copolymers with same degree of polymerization and equal extent of randomness. 1H‐NMR and FT‐IR data indicate quantitative substitution in all cases. The critical aggregation concentration (CAC) for all the polymers is estimated to be in the range of 10?5 M. Stability of these nano‐aggregates is studied by photoluminescence using time dependent F—rster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) between co‐encapsulated lipophilic dyes namely DiO and DiI in the hydrophobic pocket of the aggregates. These studies suggest remarkably high stability for all systems. However those with shorter hydrophilic pendant chains are found to be even more robust. Morphology is examined by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) which reveals multi‐micellar clusters and vesicles for polymers containing short and longer OE segments, respectively. Encapsulation efficacy is tested with both hydrophobic and hydrophilic guest molecules. All of them can encapsulate hydrophobic guest pyrene while a hydrophilic dye Calcein can be sequestered only in vesicle forming polymers. Lower critical solution temperature (LCST) is exhibited by only one polymer that contains the shortest OE chains. All polymers exhibit excellent cell viability as determined by MTT assay. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2013 , 51, 4932–4943  相似文献
