Summary Stress-strain relations for different PE melts are measured at 150 °C in an extensional rheometer under the condition of a constant extensional strain rate ( between 0,001 and 1 sec–1). Further, the recoverable (elastic) portion R of the total strain ( in Hencky's measure) is determined and additional measurements with a tensile tester for polymer melts are described. The results show clearly that in extension there is no decrease of the tensile viscosity with increasing deformation rate, in contrast to the well-known pseudoplastic behaviour in shear. Within total strains<1 the tensile behaviour can be described independently from by means of a viscoelastic material function called stressing viscosity . In this range of the relation T (t)=3 s (t) holds, where s (t) is the stressing viscosity in shear in the linear viscoelastic range. For larger tensile strains and not too small branched PB shows a remarkable increase in stress. This work-hardening behaviour is mainly a function of and almost independent from . This additional hardening seems to be due to the branches in branched PE, because linear PE does not show this effect. The discussion of the recoverable tensile strain R gives three regions of tensile rate: Below a critical there is R =0. At times shorter thant ** the equation R = is valid. Within these limits both elastic and viscous portions of the total strain= R + V exist. may correlate with the frequency of the thermally activated position changes of the molecular segments.t ** is assumed to be the time for the entanglements to act as fixed cross-links.In the appendix the influence of the interface tension between PE melt and silicone oil on the results of the tensile experiments is discussed.

The present work concerns the study of the radial distribution of eddy viscosity and mixing length and their dependence upon the Reynolds number and the concentration of the solid phase in a non-Newtonian flow of a suspension of solid particles in a gas. The investigated systems have a pseudoplastic character and the deviation from Newtonian behaviour increases with an increase in the concentration of the dispersed phase. Relations are presented for the eddy viscosity and mixing length in the flow of pseudoplastic fluids. From the analysis of results it follows that the mixing length and eddy viscosity increases with an increase in the Reynolds number. In contrast, an increase in the concentration of the solid phase and consequently of the pseudoplasticity causes a decrease in the investigated quantities. The radial distribution of the mixing length and the eddy viscosity is characterized by a maximum, after which the investigated quantities vary only slightly. This enables the area of the core of the turbulent flow to be defined.
Experimental and numerical study of laminar, axisymmetrical jets with and without buoyancy
Axisymmetrical, laminar and incompressible jets with and without buoyancy in homogeneous surroundings are investigated experimentally and numerically. The experimental set up is described. Characteristics of jets without buoyancy are presented in a parameterless form. Buoyancy — induced jets are completely determined by three parameters, the Reynolds-Number, the Grashof-Number and the Prandtl-Number. The influence of the characteristic numbers to the numerical solution is discussed. On the other hand this result is controlled by analytical solutions. The experimental results are in good agreement with the predicted values. The experiments for stability of laminar jets are correlated with a parameter of momentum.

Measurements on seven rigid PVC compounds were carried out with a slit rheometer working in combination with an injection moulding machine. Plastication of the compounds occurred in the screw of the plastication unit, which also forced the melt through the die with a controlled forward velocity. The rectangular slit had a length of 90 mm and a widthB of 20 mm. The heightH could be varied between 0.8 and 3.3 mm. Pressures and temperatures were recorded at several positions in and before the die. Measurements were carried out at shear rates from 10 to 2000 s–1.When the reduced volume output was plotted against the wall shear stress W , only four compounds showed master curves independent ofH, which is indicative of wall adhesion. In the other cases this plot did not produce such a master curve, but the plot of the mean velocity against W was independent ofH (slip curve). This indicated that slip flow prevailed with a slip velocityv G When, in the case of wall slip, the smooth inner surfaces of the die were replaced by surfaces with grooves perpendicular to the direction of flow, slip flow was prevented and the flow curves were shifted to much higher values of Wc Above a critical value of the wall shear stress ( Wc ) at which slip flow began, the output became nearly independent of W . From the measurements made below Wc a vs. relation for the shear flow could be derived, which was used to calculate the superimposed shear flow . Exact values of the slip velocity were then given by . Wall slip only occurred for compounds with a high shear viscosity, which corresponds to a high molecular weight (K-value).Dedicated to Professor H. A system is described which allows the recreation of the three-dimensional motion and deformation of a single hydrogen bubble time-line in time and space. By digitally interfacing dualview video sequences of a bubble time-line with a computer-aided display system, the Lagrangian motion of the bubble-line can be displayed in any viewing perspective desired. The u and v velocity history of the bubble-line can be rapidly established and displayed for any spanwise location on the recreated pattern. Summary Fluctuating flow of a viscous fluid rotating over a disk whose angular velocity oscillates about a nonzero mean is investigated. Initially the disk and the fluid rotate in the same sense with different angular velocities 1 and 2 ( 2> 1) and at a particular instant of time, the angular velocity of the disk becomes 1[1+ sin( )]. The problem is solved as an initial boundary value problem and it is found that for small values of the results of analytical and numerical methods are in excellent agreement. The effect of frequency parameter on surface skin frictions has been analysed for various values of angular velocity ratio s and amplitude parameter .

Polymer melt elongation is one of the most important procedures in polymer processing. To understand its molecular mechanisms, we constructed an elongational flow opto-rheometer (EFOR) in which a high precision birefringence apparatus of reflection-double path type was installed into a Meissner's new elongational rheometer of a gas cushion type (commercialized as RME from Rheometric Scientific) just by mounting a small reflecting mirror at the center of the RME's sample supporting table. The EFOR enabled us to achieve simultaneous measurements of tensile stress (t) and birefringence n(t) as a function of time t under a given constant strain rate within the range of 0.001 to 1.0s–1. (t) can be monitored upto the maximum Hencky strain (t) of 7 as attained, in principle, with RME, while the measurable range of the phase difference in the birefringence was 0 to 250 (0 to 79 100 nm for He-Ne laser light) within the accuracy of ±0.1 (±31.6 nm) up to (t) 4. The performance was tested on an anionically polymerized polystyrene (PS) and a low density polyethylene (LDPE). For both polymers (t) first followed the linear viscoelasticity rule in that the elongational viscosity, , is three times the steady shear viscosity, 3 o(t), at low shear rate , but the E (t) tended to deviate upward after a certain Hencky strain was attained. The birefringence n(t) was a function of both Hencky strain and strain rate in such a way that the stress-optical law holds with the stress-optical coefficient C(t) = n(t)/(t) being equal to the ones reported from shear flow experiments. Interestingly, however, for PS elongated at low strain rates the C(t) vs (t) relation exhibited a strong nonlinearity as soon as (t) reached steady state. This implies that the tensile stress reaches the steady state but the birefringence continues to increase in the low strain-rate elongation. For the PS melt elongated at high strain rates, on the other hand, C(t) was nearly a constant in the entire range observed. For LDPE with long-chain branchings, (t) exhibited tendency of strain-induced hardening after certain critical strain, but C(t) was nearly a constant in the entire range of (t) observed.

Transient heat transfer in cooled cavities with apertures permeable to radiation
A cavity with irradiated transient energy flows absorbed by cooled walls and re-emitted by radiation and reflection is considered. For the estimation of the transient temperature fields within the walls, the boundary of the cavity is replaced by a node model featuring arbitrary cavity geometries and an eligible number of arbitrary canalized coolant flows. The consideration of heat conduction, radiation exchange and multiple reflection leads to a system of non-linear differential equations. A simple algorithm for a numerical solution is given. As an example, the computing model is applied to the cavity-type receiver of a thermal solar tower plant. The behaviour of the temperatures of walls and coolants is discussed for the occurrance of load cycles caused by shading and for the limiting case of radiative equilibrium.

A new method for describing the rheological properties of reactive polymer melts, which was presented in an earlier paper, is developed in more detail. In particular, a detailed derivation of the equation of a first-order rheometrical flow surface is given and a procedure for determining parameters and functions occurring in this equation is proposed. The existence and stability of several traveling wave solutions are established by using ideas in differential equations and functional analysis. Steady-state solutions of some inhomogeneous integral–differential equations are also investigated. The dynamics of an analytic reversible vector field (X,) is studied in with one real parameter close to 0; X=0 is a fixed point. The differential Dx (0,0) generates an oscillatory dynamics with a frequency of order 1—due to two simple, opposite eigenvalues lying on the imaginary axis—and it also generates a slow dynamics which changes from a hyperbolic type—eigenvalues are —to an elliptic type—eigenvalues are —as passes trough 0. The existence of reversible homoclinic connections to periodic orbits is known for such vector fields. In this paper we study a particular subclass of such vector fields, obtained by small reversible perturbations of the normal form. We give an explicit condition on the perturbation, generically satisfied, which prevents the existence of a homoclinic connections to 0 for the perturbed system. The normal form system of any order admits a reversible homoclinic connection to 0, which then does not survive under perturbation of higher order. It will be seen that normal form essentially decouples the hyperbolic and elliptic part of the linearization to any chosen algebraic order. However, this decoupling does not persist arbitrary reversible perturbation, which finally causes the appearance of small amplitude oscillations.

The fundamental unsteady aerodynamics on a vane row of an axial flow research compressor stage are experimentally investigated, demonstrating the effects of airfoil camber and steady loading. In particular, the rotor wake generated unsteady surface pressure distributions on the first stage vane row are quantified over a range of operating conditions. These cambered airfoil unsteady data are correlated with predictions from a flat plate cascade inviscid flow model. At the design point, the unsteady pressure difference coefficient data exhibit good correlation with the nonseparated predictions, with the aerodynamic phase lag data exhibiting fair trendwise correlation. The quantitative phase lag differences are associated with the camber of the airfoil. An aft suction surface flow separation region is indicated by the steady state surface static pressure data as the aerodynamic loading is increased. Summary A single integral constitutive equation with strain dependent and factorized memory function is applied to describe the time dependence of the shear stress, the primary normal-stress difference, and, by using the stress-optical law, also the extinction angle and flow birefringence of a polystyrene melt in intermittent shear flows. The theoretical predictions are compared with measurements. The nonlinearity of the viscoelastic behaviour which is represented by the so called damping function, is approximated by a single exponential function with one parametern. The damping constantn as well as a discrete relaxation time spectrum of the melt can be determined from the frequency dependence of the loss and storage moduli.

Predictions are made for the elongational-flow transient rheological properties of the dilute-solution internal viscosity (IV) model developed earlier by Bazua and Williams. Specifically, the elongational viscosity growth function e + (t) is presented for abrupt changes in the elongational strain rate . For calculating e +, a novel treatment of the initial rotation of chain submolecules is required; such rotation occurs in response to the macroscopic step change of at t = 0. Representative are results presented for N = 100 (N = number of submolecules) and = 1000 f and 10000 f (where is the IV coefficient and f is the bead friction coefficient), using h * = 0 (as in the original Rouse model) for the hydrodynamic interaction. The major role of IV is to cause the following changes relative to the Rouse model: 1) abrupt stress jump at t = 0 for e +; 2) general time-retardance of response. There is no qualitative change from the Rouse-model prediction of unbounded il growth when exceeds a critical value ( ), and calculations of submolecule strains at various show that the unbounded- e behavior arises from unlimited submolecule strains when . However, the time-retardance could delay such growth beyond the timescale of most experiments and spinning processes, so that the instability might not be detected. Finally, e + (t) and e ( ) in the limit are presented for N = 1 and compared with exact predictions for the analogous rigid-rod molecule; close agreement lends support for the new physical approximation introduced for solving the transient dynamics for any N.

An in depth study into the development and decay of distorted turbulent pipe flows in incompressible flow has yielded a vast quantity of experimental data covering a wide range of initial conditions. Sufficient detail on the development of both mean flow and turbulence structure in these flows has been obtained to allow an implied radial static pressure distribution to be calculated. The static pressure distributions determined compare well both qualitatively and quantitatively with earlier experimental work.
