Attachment of triarylamino‐functional groups at the 9‐position of 2,7‐linked carbazole polymers results in blue‐emitting materials with two independent redox processes that were attributed to the triarylamino groups and the polymer backbone, respectively. This new class of blue‐emitting conjugated polymers was prepared via a Suzuki cross‐coupling reaction and showed low turn‐on voltages in electroluminescent devices as a result of their low ionisation potentials. The photophysical, electrochemical and electroluminescent properties of these materials are discussed.

Multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) purified by acidic solution were processed with PMMA via an in‐situ polymerization. Experimental evidences indicate the role of radical initiator (AIBN) and MWNT, showing increases of polymerization rate and MWNT diameter. Induced radicals on the MWNT by AIBN were found to trigger the grafting of PMMA. Moreover, the solvent cast film showed a better nanoscopic dispersion of MWNT and possibilities of CNT composites in engineering applications.

Spherical single‐chain‐particles of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) were prepared in aqueous solution above the lower critical solution temperature upon the addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate. The size of the single‐chain‐particles was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and viscosity measurements of the corresponding solutions, indicating the absence of inter‐chain entanglements among the single‐chain‐particles.

This communication details the successful synthesis of low polydispersity core cross‐linked star (CCS) polymers via DPE‐mediated polymerisation. We demonstrate the ability to produce poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(acrylonitrile) CCS polymers that are currently inaccessible via the two most common non‐metal‐based controlled radical polymerisation techniques (NMP and RAFT polymerisations).

Summary: Fabrication of honeycomb‐patterned films from amphiphilic dendronized block copolymer (PEO113b‐PDMA82) by ‘on‐solid surface spreading’ and ‘on‐water spreading’ method is reported. Highly ordered honeycomb films with quasi‐horizontally paralleled double‐layered structure can be fabricated by the on‐solid surface spreading method. This work raises the possibility that such structures can be formed in amphiphilic dendronized block copolymers and extends the family of source materials.

Summary: The mechanical properties, morphology, and orientation of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) network have been studied during cyclic elongation and recovery by simultaneous Fourier‐transform near‐infrared polarization spectroscopy at temperatures ranging from room temperature to −40 °C. Completely different orientation/recovery mechanisms and changes in the state of order of PDMS were detected as a consequence of cyclic loading/unloading with decreasing temperature. The differences observed at −20 °C compared to room temperature are explained in terms of conformationally regular chain segments, whereas the cooling to −40 °C leads to the formation of lamellar crystals.

Summary: Nanowire lengths and length‐to‐width aspect ratios in regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were simply controlled through changes in the solvent vapor pressure during solidification. It is demonstrated that the nanowires grew by rod‐to‐rod association, in which the molecular long axis of the P3HT chains appeared to be well‐oriented parallel to the silicon substrate (Si/SiOx). The formation of the nanowires took place by one dimensional self‐assembly, governed by ππ stacking of the P3HT units.

Blue emission of oxygen‐doped tertiary amine (triethylamine), a key unit of fluorescent poly(amido amine) dendrimer, was demonstrated. It was found that the fluorescence intensity could be further enhanced if the tertiary amines locate densely in the dendrimer interior as the branching sites. Moreover, a solvatochromic phenol blue, instead of oxygen, is able to induce the blue fluorescence of the tertiary amino‐branching sites based on a guaranteed host‐guest complexation of phenol blue molecules and dendrimer interior.

The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of PEC nanoparticles as delivery system for cancer chemotherapy. Assembly of paclitaxel‐loaded nanoparticles with high loading efficiency and narrow‐size distribution is successful. For non‐invasive in vivo tracing, nanoparticle blends of chelator bearing poly(lactide) with PEC and PLGA are successfully prepared. Pharmacokinetic studies in mice reveal a twofold higher circulation time of PEC as compared to PLGA. A tumor model shows an accumulation of PEC NPs in cancerous tissue and a higher anti‐tumor efficiency compared to the standard Taxol?, which is reflected in a significantly slower tumor growth compared to the NaCl control group.

A series of pentavalent tantalum and niobium complexes with aryloxy ligands was prepared, and their catalytic behavior for the ROMP of norbornene was studied in the presence of an alkylaluminum cocatalyst. Tantalum complexes 1 – 4 showed very high activity for the ROMP of NBE in combination with iBu3Al to give high‐molecular‐weight polymers. In contrast, the niobium complexes 5 and 6 , as well as NbCl5, exhibited very high activity upon activation with Me3Al to give high‐molecular‐weight polymers.

Bimodal fiber meshes with fiber diameters differing by one order of magnitude, are electrospun in a simple one‐step process, using a standard single syringe electrospin setup. The nano‐ and microfiber meshes combine the benefits of nanofibers (cell adhesion, proliferation) with those of microfibers (open structure, large pore size) and are therefore interesting as scaffolds for cellular infiltration.

Herein, we report synthesis and self‐association properties of amphiphilic double‐comb polymers with polyglycidol backbones. First, a bifunctional polyglycidol precursor is synthesized via monomer activated anionic polymerization. Next, two efficient and orthogonal polymer analogous reactions are carried out for grafting hydrophilic oligoethylene glycol side chains and hydrophobic linear aliphatic side‐chains. The polymers are analyzed by means of NMR, GPC, and DSC. From the DSC analysis of the bulk samples it is evident that aliphatic side chains segregate from the polar backbone and thus crystallize. Furthermore, in aqueous media the double‐comb polymers spontaneously self‐assemble to form a multilayer structure. The present results pave a way to tailor and design amphiphilic polymers based on glycidols. Major advantages are spontaneous self‐assembly in water and the possibility to form onion polymersomes relevant to encapsulation.

Summary: A simple compounding technique for the fabrication of polymer nanocomposites with single‐walled carbon nanotubes having exceptional alignment and improved mechanical properties is described. The aligned‐nanotube composite was prepared by dissolving single‐walled carbon nanotubes in a solution of thermoplastic polyurethane and tetrahydrofuran. Solvent‐polymer interactions that induce the orientation of soft chain segments during the swelling and moisture curing stage are believed to serve as a driving force for the macroscopic alignment of the carbon nanotubes.

New multifunctional copoly(2‐oxazoline) nanoparticles were prepared for cell studies. The polymer contains double‐bond side chains as potential reaction sites for “thio”‐click reactions as well as a fluorescein label covalently bound to the polymer backbone. Using the nanoprecipitation technique, spherical nanoparticles of 200–800 nm were obtained. Confocal laser scanning microscopy measurements revealed the cellular uptake of the nanoparticles.

Summary: The vapor‐based synthesis and characterization of a reactive polymer, poly[(4‐formyl‐p‐xylylene)‐co‐(p‐xylylene)] ( 1 ), have been reported. The reactive polymer coating enables the immobilization of oligosaccharides via the chemoselective aldehyde‐hydrazide coupling reaction.

A simple method to fabricate polymer nanocomposites with single‐walled carbon nanotubes is reported, in which the nanotubes were reacted with poly(L ‐lysine) by using high‐speed vibration milling. The nanocomposites obtained were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR), UV–Vis spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric methods. The morphology as well as the dispersion of the carbon nanotubes were determined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy.

This study reports the first PEO‐coated polymer nanoparticles synthesis by miniemulsion polymerization of nano‐emulsions prepared by the low‐energy emulsification method called EIP. The surfactant used was Brij 98, a PEO based non ionic commercial surfactant. The partial phase diagram of the system water/Brij 98/styrene was first determined. The Emulsion Inversion Point technique was then used on the water/Brij 98/styrene system to the formation of styrene‐in‐water nano‐emulsions. After miniemulsion polymerization, particle sizes as low as 36 nm were obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this method had not been used for polymerizable system up to now.

Degradable dendrimer‐like PEOs were designed using an original ABC‐type branching agent featuring a cleavable ketal group, following an iterative divergent approach based on the anionic ring opening polymerization (AROP) of ethylene oxide and arborization of PEO chain ends. A seventh generation dendrimer‐like PEO carrying 192 peripheral hydroxyls and exhibiting a molar mass of 446 kg · mol−1 was obtained in this way. The chemical degradation of these dendritic scaffolds was next successfully accomplished under acidic conditions, forming linear PEO chains of low molar mass (≈2 kg · mol−1), as monitored by 1H NMR, SEC, and MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry as well as by AFM.

New aromatic compounds with a pyridazine core have been synthesized. Four electron‐withdrawing monomers have been easily prepared from simple condensation reactions and ring closure procedures. Optimized HOMO, LUMO, and bandgap energy levels have been obtained. The resulting conjugated polymers have been tested in organic solar cells. First studies have revealed power conversion efficiencies up to 0.5% for an active area of 1.0 cm2.
