On the Rational Canonical Form of a Matrix

Let L be a linear map on the space of n×n matrices over a field. We determine the structure of the maps L that preserve commutativity. We also determine the structure of all linear maps on complex matrices that preserve the higher numerical range. The main tool is the Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry.

Symplectic Difference Schemes for Linear Hamiltonian Canonical Systems

In this paper, we present some results of a study, specifically within the framework of symplectic geometry, of difference schemes for numerical solution of the linear Hamiltonian systems. We generalize the Cayley transform with which we can get different types of symplectic schemes. These schemes are various generalizations of the Euler centered scheme. They preserve all the invariant first integrals of the linear Hamiltonian systems.

Numerical Determination of Damping in Metal Matrix Composites

Damping in metal matrix composites is mainly caused by inelastic matrix deformation induced by the great difference in the mechanical properties of the single constituents of the materials. In this study, the finite-element method in combination with a highly accurate material model is employed to examine the effects of both the fiber volume fraction and the external loading amplitude on the energy dissipation process in an Al/SiC composite under a cyclic mechanical load.

A Note on the Canonical Form for a Pair of Orthoprojectors

谢邦杰在文献[2]—[5]中,研究了体上特征矩阵的简化形式与法式。本文在文献[1]的基础上,采用不同于[2]的方法,定义体上特征矩阵的另一种简化形式。对于我们所定义的简化形式,得到体上特征矩阵具有绝对唯一的简化形式,即法式存在的充分必要条件是矩阵满足中心化条件,从而使更广的一类特征矩阵存在法式。此外,我们还将[5]中体上矩阵的Caylcy-Hamilton定理再一次推广。     

Numerical Measure of a Complex Matrix

We introduce a natural probability measure over the numerical range of a complex matrix A ∈ M _n( \input amssym $\Bbb C$ ). This numerical measure μ_A can be defined as the law of the random variable 〈AX, X〉 ∈ \input amssym $\Bbb C$ when the vector X ∈ \input amssym $\Bbb C$ ⁿ is uniformly distributed on the unit sphere. If the matrix A is normal, we show that μ_A has a piecewise polynomial density f_A, which can be identified with a multivariate B‐spline. In the general (nonnormal) case, we relate the Radon transform of μ_A to the spectrum of a family of Hermitian matrices, and we deduce an explicit representation formula for the numerical density that is appropriate for theoretical and computational purposes. As an application, we show that the density f_A is polynomial in some regions of the complex plane that can be characterized geometrically, and we recover some known results about lacunae of symmetric hyperbolic systems in 2 + 1 dimensions. Finally, we prove under general assumptions that the numerical measure of a matrix A ∈ M _n (\input amssym $\Bbb C$ ) concentrates to a Dirac mass as the size n goes to infinity. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
