Local surface charge dissipation studied using force spectroscopy method of atomic force microscopy 下载免费PDF全文
We propose herein a method to study local surface charge dissipation in dielectric films using force spectroscopy technique of atomic force microscopy. By using a normalization procedure and considering an analytical expression of the tip‐sample interaction force, we could estimate the characteristic time decay of the dissipation process. This approach is completely independent of the atomic force microscopy tip geometry and considerably reduces the amount of experimental data needed for the calculation compared with other techniques. The feasibility of the method was demonstrated in a freshly cleaved mica surface, in which the local charge dissipation after cleavage followed approximately a first‐order exponential law with the characteristic time decay of approximately 7–8 min at 30% relative humidity (RH) and 2–3.5 min at 48% RH. Polypyrrole latex (P(P)), synthesized in Redox polymerization of pyrrole, was used as seed for radical polymerization of
acrolein initiated with K2S2O8. In this process the polypyrrole core/polyacrolein shell latex (P(P–A)) was obtained. Morphology of the surface of P(P–A)
particles was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that macromolecules of polyacrolein are not randomly
distributed on the surface of polypyrrole but form patches. Apparently, attraction between macromolecules of poly-acrolein
in the surface layer is high and the enthalpy of formation of polyacrolein macromolecule clusters is sufficient to compensate,
at least, the negative entropy change due to ordering of these macromolecules. Thickness of the polyacrolein layer on the
surface of polypyrrole particles, which were covered only partially with polyacrolein, was equal to only 1.6 nm (standard
deviation σ= 0.2 nm) and thus, it was reasonable to assume that it corresponded to the monolayer coverage.

The surface structure of latex dispersion films was examined with an atomic force microscope. All measurements were done in air on latex films having a minimum film formation temperature of 12°C and a glass transition temperature of 18°C. One aim of this study was to follow structural changes during film formation. Three minutes after spreading the film, its surface layer dried. Afterwards, the structure of the film did not change anymore. Only after 4 months could structural changes be observed: Though individual latex particles could be identified, the particles partly melted into one another. After annealing films at 50° or 60°C for 4 h, the latex particles partly melted into one another, but individual particles could still be identified. When annealing at or above 80°C, no individual latex particles were visible anymore. With increasing temperature the film roughness decreased from 3 nm without annealing to 0.8 nm at 100°C annealing temperature. In addition, islands of 2–4 nm thickness appeared on the film surface. These islands could be scraped off the film by increasing the force between tip and sample, indicating that they are composed of surfactant which was squeezed out of the film. 相似文献

We report atomic force microscopy images of surfactant (SDS) exudation in PBMA latex films, in the presence and the absence of a coalescing aid (Texanol?, TPM). The exudates appear as hilly islets, and at times as mountains, at the film surface. Their size and number increase upon annealing above the glass-transition temperature of the latex polymer. TPM was found to be a strong promoter of surfactant exudation at the air-polymer interface. In the absence of TPM, annealing the films for several hours at 70°C led to very little migration of surfactant to the surface at most sites in the film. When the films with structures of SDS on their surface were immersed in water, these structures disappeared. Pores, ranging in size from tens to hundreds of nm in diameter, were clearly visible in the surface of the films. These films dry from the edges of the film inward, with a propagation front concentrating the water-soluble species into a turbid, moist region in the center. At this site, the rate at which the surfactant comes to the surface is enormously enhanced over that at other sites in the film. This is likely due to the high concentration of surfactant in this region, transported there by the drying process. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been applied to investigate the morphological and topographical surface modifications induced by radiofrequency cold plasma processing of poly(ethyleneterephthalate) textiles. Surface effects are analysed in low‐pressure air plasma for different plasma exposure times. The results show a progressive degradation of the surface with increasing roughness. The analysis suggests that modification of the surface during textile treatment may be ascribed to a plasma‐induced physical process. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Individual polyhydroxyalkanoate synthase molecules from Ralstonia eutropha (PhaCRe) were directly visualized on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) by atomic force microscopy (AFM). PhaCRe molecule was observed as a spherical particle of 2.9 +/- 0.4 nm in height and 28 +/- 4 nm in width. In vitro polymerization reaction on HOPG was carried out for 5 min by reacting the PhaCRe molecules with (R)-3-hydroxybutyryl-CoA monomers. The reaction product was then observed after the removal of water solution. Several PhaCRe molecules associated with each other to form an assembly, which was attached to a fibrillar structure of ca. 0.2-0.3 nm in height. The fibrillar structure that elongated from the PhaCRe assembly was interpreted as the poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] polymer chain. High resolution AFM suggested that the PhaCRe assembly was composed of 3-4 subunits of PhaCRe molecules. This was further supported by SDS-PAGE analysis of the cross-linked PhaCRe enzyme. These results suggest that more than two subunits of PhaCRe are necessary for the in vitro polymerization of PHB molecular chains. 相似文献

The effect of uniaxial deformation in partially and fully molten states on the morphology of crosslinked low-density polyethylene has been investigated. At low temperatures, the morphology is predominantly fibrillar, with little kebabs appearing on the fibril surfaces. As the deformation temperature is increased into the melting range, the shish density decreases, and overgrowths of kebabs on the fibrils concurrently increase in length. This gives rise to added twisting of the kebabs reflected in the orientation factor analysis. This shish/twisted lamellar kebab texture is observed only in a partially molten state. Studies in a substantially molten state indicate the absence of shish, althugh short lamellae are observed that are oriented in the transverse direction. This morphology indicates a high chain orientation factor as a result of short lamellae that exhibit small twisting similar to Matsumura's rod model. The absence of shishes in the final films stretched isothermally in a substantially molten stage agrees with Schultz's model, in which imperfectly formed shishes dissolve if they are not stabilized by rapid cooling, as is the case in these studies. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Observation of banded spherulites and lamellar structures by atomic force microscopy 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Spherulites are common structures of semi-crystalline polymers. It has been known that semi-crystalline polymers can form spherulites when crystallized from solution or from melt. A dark Maltese cross of a spherulite could be easily observed under the polarized optical microscopy (POM). Moreover, some spherulites show an additional alternating dark and bright concentric ring structure that is attributed to the regular twisting of the radial crystallite ribbons as they grow from the spherulit… 相似文献

Surface properties have a significant influence on the performance of biomedical devices. The influence of surface chemistry on the amount and distribution of adsorbed proteins has been evaluated by a combination of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Adsorption of albumin, fibrinogen, and fibronectin was analyzed under static and dynamic conditions, employing self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) as model surfaces. AFM was performed in tapping mode with antibody-modified tips. Phase-contrast images showed protein distribution on SAMs and phase-shift entity provided information on protein conformation. SPR analysis revealed substrate-specific dynamics in each system investigated. When multi-protein solutions and diluted human plasma interacted with SAMs, SPR data suggested that surface chemistry governs the equilibrium composition of the protein layer. 相似文献

The α- and β-form lamellae of isotactic polypropylene were developed at different temperatures. The melting behaviors of the
lamellae were observed in real time at elevated temperatures using a hot-stage atomic force microscopy. The melting behavior
of the α-form lamellae was determined by the lamellar defects. For the α-form lamellae developed at different undercoolings,
the larger the undercoolings, the relatively higher amount of defect in the lamellae was observed. The lamellae with defects
were melted into lamellar segments, and recrystallization took place during the heating process. The β-form lamellae had lower
thermal stability, and they melted firstly and separately from that of α-form. 相似文献

In situ observation of lamellar crystals during the enzymatic degradation by poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) depolymerase is carried out on the thin films of poly[((R)-3-hydroxybutyric acid)-co-(16 mol-%-(R)-3-hydroxypentanoic acid)] using atomic force microscopy in buffer solution. Erosion of lamellar crystals and formation of splintered morphology along the crystal growth direction are directly observed during the course of the enzymatic degradation process. The changes in lamellar morphologies caused by enzymatic degradation are discussed in terms of lamellar crystal growth process.

As many properties of polymer thin films critically depend on their thickness, a convenient and cost‐effective method for precise measurement of film thickness in a wide range is highly desirable. Here, we present a method which enables polymer film thickness, ranging from nanometer to micrometer scale, to be facilely determined by measuring the height of an artificially created film step on smooth substrates with atomic force microscopy (AFM). Three polymeric films (polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(styrene–ethylene/butylene–styrene) films), spin‐coated on either mica or quartz substrate with thickness ranging from 5.7 nm to 4.4 µm, were employed to demonstrate the procedure and feasibility of our method. The proposed method is particularly suitable for thicker polymer films, thus complementing the traditional AFM ‘tip‐scratch’ method which is generally limited to polymer films of no more than 100 nm thickness. The surface structure and dewetting process of thin films of complex perfluorinated ion‐containing polymers have been studied with atomic force microscopy. These polymers, or ionomers, consist of hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and ionic groups, which are noncompatible with one another, and this results in the association of the polymers into supramolecular structures. These types of polymers have a broad range of technological uses, ranging from thin selective coatings to fuel cells in the form of polymer electrolyte membranes. As the technology calls for thinner films, the interfacial structure and dynamics (wetting/dewetting) of the films become critical in controlling the overall behavior of the polymers. The ionomer under consideration forms structured films consisting of bundles of micelles. These ultrathin films do not dewet above the glass‐transition temperatures of the polymers, contrary to what has been observed in thin diblock copolymers. Perturbing the system with a high‐ionic‐strength solution, however, results in a breakup of the primary aggregate and enhances the adhesion of the films and their stability. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer diffusion across interfaces at room temperature (21°C) was analyzed by direct nonradiative energy transfer (DET) in labeled latex films. Two modellatex polymers were examined: poly(butyl methacrylate) [PBMA, Mw = 3.5 × 104, Tg (dry) = 21°C] and a copolymer of 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate with 10 wt % (acetoacetoxy)-ethyl methacrylate [P(EHMA-co-AAEM), Mw = 4.8 × 104, Tg (dry) = −7°C]. Little energy transfer due to polymer diffusion was detected for the P(EHMA-co-AAEM) latex samples in the dispersed state or dried to solids content below ca. 90%, but above 90% solids, diffusion occurs among particles. For PBMA, diffusion occurs only after the film is dried (>97% solids) and aged. In the dry PBMA films, it requires 4–5 days at 21°C to reach a significant extent of mixing (fm = 0.3–0.4). This corresponds to an estimated penetration depth dapp of 30–40 nm and a mean apparent diffusion coefficient (Dapp) of 5 × 10−4 nm2/s. The corresponding Dapp value for the dry P(EHMA-co-AAEM) sample is 5 × 10−2 nm2/s, and it takes about 25–40 min for this polymer to reach fm of 0.3–0.4 with dapp of 20–30 nm. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This article presents the utilization of “molecular amplification” to visualize the molecular architecture of “arborescent” (tree‐like) polystyrenes (arbPSs) using atomic force microscopy (AFM). arbPSs with Mn > 80,000 g/mol were synthesized via initiator‐monomer‐type (inimer) RAFT polymerization of styrene mediated by 4‐vinylbenzyl dithiobenzoate in bulk. These arbPS were then used as macrochain transfer agents for polymerization of vinylbenzyl chloride (VBCl) to give arborescent poly(styrene‐block‐vinylbenzyl chloride) (arbPS‐b‐VBCl). Poly(styryl) diphenylethyl lithium (Mn = 11,000 g/mol) was then grafted onto the VBCl units of the arbPS‐b‐VBCl. The Mn of the amplified arbPSs increased over >10 million g/mol, exceeding the exclusion limit of our size exclusion chromatography equipment. AFM confirmed the proposed branches on branches architecture in the samples, together with lesser branched species. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012 相似文献

Spectrin molecules extracted from human blood ceil membrane have been examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM) without using shadowing or staining procedures. A drop of the solution containing spectrin molecules was deposited on the freshly deaved mica substrate. After about 1 min, the residual solution was removed with a piece of filter paper. Afterwards the sample was imaged with a home-made atomic force microscope (AFM) in air in a constant force mode. The obtained AFM images revealed that the spectrin molecules prepared from the above procedures exhibit several kinds of structures as follows: (i) the compact rod-like spectrin heterodimers with a length of around 100 nm; (ii) bent or curved linear tetramers with a length of around 200 nm; (iii) somewhat curved spectrin hexamers, octomers or decamers with lengths of about 300, 400, or 500 nm; and (iv) high oligomers with a length above 1 000 nm. 相似文献

Cyclohexylcarbodiimidoethyl methacrylate (CCEMA) and t‐butylcarbodiimidoethyl methacrylate (t‐BCEMA) were prepared in a two‐step synthesis. These monomers were then used to prepare carbodiimide‐functionalized PBMA and PEHMA latex particles, employing two‐stage emulsion polymerization, with the carbodiimide–methacrylate monomers being introduced only in the second stage under monomer‐starved conditions. During emulsion polymerization, the carbodiimide moiety ( NCN ) was found to be unstable at pH 4, but stable when the pH of the dispersion was increased to 8, using NaHCO3 as the buffer. Survival of NCN group against hydrolysis during the polymerization, and during storage in the dispersion, was enhanced by using EHMA as the comonomer (more hydrophobic) and the t‐butyl carbodiimide derivative. The t‐butyl group provides more steric hindrance to the hydrolysis reaction. A decrease in the reaction temperature from 80°C to 60°C was also found to increase the extent of NCN group incorporation during emulsion polymerization. Under ideal conditions, more than 98% of the NCN groups in the monomer feed are successfully incorporated into the latex. When these latex particles are mixed with a COOH containing latex and allowed to dry, polymer diffusion leading to crosslinking occurs. Films annealed at 60°C reach a gel content of 60% in 10 h. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 855–869, 2000 相似文献

This article reports the results of confocal fluorescence microscopy studies of shear‐induced coalescence in binary blends of poly(2‐ethylhexyl methacrylate) (PEHMA; 90 wt %) and poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA; 10 wt %). We prepared the blends by casting a mixture of latex dispersions of the components onto a substrate and allowing the film to dry under ambient conditions. The initial morphology of the film was a dispersion of 120‐nm PBMA spheres in a continuous PEHMA matrix. One‐fifth of the PBMA particles were labeled with anthracene, the emission of which we observed with confocal microscopy. The blends were sheared in a parallel‐plate rheometer at 80 and 100 °C for 1 and 10 h. Careful image analysis allowed us to estimate the mean size of the dispersed phase and the width of the size distribution. The results were compared with the theoretical limits of Wu and Taylor. After 10 h of shearing, the mean particle size decreased and the particle distribution became narrower in comparison with the results obtained after 1 h of shearing. We explain this result by inferring that before the sample reached steady‐state morphology, its rate of coalescence was greater than the rate of particle breakup. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
