The effect of a high magnetic field of 7 T in the reaction of methyl methacrylate polymerization is emphasized. The intervening magnetokinetic modifications are correlated with the system of radical initiation with benzoyl peroxide, 2,2′‐azobis(2‐methylpropionitrile), 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid), and 1,1′‐azobis(cyclohexane‐1‐carbonitrile). The characterization of the synthesized polymers is correlated with the reaction conditions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 5678–5686, 2004  相似文献

The synthesis of 4-arm methyl methacrylate star polymer had been achieved successfully by atom transfer radical polymerization using CuCl as catalyst, 2, 2′-bipyridyl as ligand and pentaerythritol tetrakis (2-bromoisobutyrate) as the initiator. The star polymer was characterized by 1H-NMR and GPC, by which the precise 4-arm structure of the PMMA was confirmed. __________ Translated from Journal of Shaanxi Normal University (Natural Science Edition), 2008, 36(2) (in Chinese)  相似文献

An efficient method for methyl methacrylate radical polymerization by tri-n-propyl-, triisopropyl-, and triisobutylborane ammonia complexes, including the addition of a boron-containing initiating agent into the monomer in air, was developed. An advantage of this method is that the reaction occurs at room temperature, requires no peroxide components, and leads to polymers with enhanced thermal stability.__________Published in Russian in Izvestiya Akademii Nauk. Homopolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was carried out in the presence of triphenylstibonium 1,2,3,4-tetraphenyl-cyclopentadienylide as an initiator in dioxane at 65°C±0·l°C. The system follows non-ideal radical kinetics (R p ∝ [M]1·4 [I]0·44 @#@) due to primary radical termination as well as degradative chain-transfer reaction. The overall activation energy and average value ofk 2 p /k t were 64 kJmol−1 and 0.173 × 10−3 1 mol−1 s−1 respectively  相似文献

This investigation reports the synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate) via activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP) and studies the effect of solvents and temperature on its polymerization kinetics. ARGET ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was carried out in different solvents and at different temperatures using CuBr2 as catalyst in combination with N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as a ligand. Methyl 2‐chloro propionate was used as ATRP initiator and ascorbic acid was used as a reducing agent in the ARGET ATRP of MMA. The conversion was measured gravimetrically. The semilogarithmic plot of monomer conversion versus time was found to be linear, indicating that the polymerization follows first‐order kinetics. The linear polymerization kinetic plot also indicates the controlled nature of the polymerization. N,N‐Dimethylformamide (DMF), tetrahydrofuran (THF), toluene, and methyl ethyl ketone were used as solvents to study the effect on the polymerization kinetics. The effect of temperature on the kinetics of the polymerization was also studied at various temperatures. It has been observed that polymerization followed first‐order kinetics in every case. The rate of polymerization was found to be highest (kapp = 6.94 × 10−3 min−1) at a fixed temperature when DMF was used as solvent. Activation energies for ARGET ATRP of MMA were also calculated using the Arrhenius equation.  相似文献

This study examined the use of a new tetrafunctional peroxide initiator in the bulk free‐radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate. The objective was to investigate the effect of using a multifunctional initiator through an examination of the rates of polymerization and the polymer properties. The molecular weights and radii of gyration were obtained with a size exclusion chromatograph equipped with an online multi‐angle laser light scattering detector. The performance of the tetrafunctional initiator was compared to that of a monofunctional counterpart [tert‐butylperoxy 2‐ethylhexyl carbonate (TBEC)]. The results showed that the new tetrafunctional peroxide initiator produced a faster rate of polymerization than TBEC at an equivalent concentration but also generated a polymer of a lower molecular weight. This trend was the opposite of what was observed in a previous study with styrene. When TBEC was used at a concentration four times that of the new tetrafunctional peroxide initiator, both produced equal rates of polymerization and similar molecular weights. The degree of branching was also investigated with radius‐of‐gyration plots. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 5647–5661, 2004  相似文献

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to measure the decomposition rates of four commercially used initiators, 2,2′-azobis(isobutyronitrile) 2,2′-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile), dilauroyl peroxide and bis(4-t-butylcyclohexyl)peroxydicarbonate, in dynamic mode, while the courses of methyl methacrylate polymerization with the listed initiators at 65, 75 and 85°C were measured isothermally. From the DSC curves, the polymerization enthalpies, the overall reaction rate constants and the activation energies for the initial steady-state polymerization were calculated. It was found that the polymerization enthalpy and the kinetic parameters depended on the type of the initiator. An initiator with a shorter decomposition half-lifetime shifted the onset of the gel effect to a higher conversion, intensified it and decreased the average molar mass of the polymer.  相似文献

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) polymerizations have been conducted in the presence of large excesses of N-tert-butyl-N-[1-diethylphosphono-(2,2-dimethylpropyl) nitroxide] (SG1) at 110°C. It is demonstrated that such a protocol does not improve control/livingness in the nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP) of this monomer, instead substantial levels of disproportionation between the nitroxide and propagating radical (PMMA) results. The extent of the disproportionation reaction increased with the SG1 concentration, eventually becoming the sole end forming event. Significant disproportionation between SG1 and PMMA was also observed at substantially lower temperatures (45°C) in the presence of large excesses of SG1. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nickel‐mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and iron‐mediated reverse ATRP were applied to the living radical graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate onto solid high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) films modified with 2,2,2‐tribromoethanol and benzophenone, respectively. The number‐average molecular weight (Mn) of the free poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) produced simultaneously during grafting grew with the monomer conversion. The weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight ratio (Mw/Mn) was small (<1.4), indicating a controlled polymerization. The grafting ratio showed a linear relation with Mn of the free PMMA for both reaction systems. With the same characteristics assumed for both free and graft PMMA, the grafting was controlled, and the increase in grafting ratio was ascribed to the growing chain length of the graft PMMA. In fact, Mn and Mw/Mn of the grafted PMMA chains cleaved from the polyethylene substrate were only slightly larger than those of the free PMMA chains, and this was confirmed in the system of nickel‐mediated ATRP. An appropriate period of UV preirradiation controlled the amount of initiation groups introduced to the HDPE film modified with benzophenone. The grafting ratio increased linearly with the preirradiation time. The graft polymerizations for both reaction systems proceeded in a controlled fashion. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ultrasonically initiated emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was investigated. Experimental results show that sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) surfactant plays a very important role in obtaining a high polymer yield, because in the absence of SDS, monomer conversion is near zero. Thus, the surfactant serves as an initiator and as interfacial modifier in this system (MMA/H2O), and the monomer conversion increases significantly with increasing SDS concentration. An increase in the reactor temperature also leads to an increase in the monomer conversion. An appropriate increase in the N2 purging rate also leads to higher conversion. The conversion of MMA decreases with increasing monomer concentration because of the higher viscosity of the system. With the experimental results, optimized reaction conditions were obtained. Accordingly, a high monomer conversion of about 67% and a high molecular weight of several millions can be obtained in a period of about 30 min. Furthermore, transmission electron micrographs show that the latex particles prepared are nanosized, indicating a promising technique for preparing nanoscale latex particles with a small amount of surfactant. In conclusion, a promising technique for ultrasonically initiated emulsion polymerization has been successfully performed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Aqueous acrylic‐polyurethane (AC–PU) hybrid emulsions were prepared by semibatch emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of four polyurethane (PU) dispersions. The PU dispersions were synthesized with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 1000 and 2000 molecular weight (MW) poly(neopentyl) adipate, 1000 MW polytetramethyleneetherglycol, butanediol (BD), and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA). MMA was added in the monomer emulsion feed. We studied the effect of the use of different PU seed particles on the rate of polymerization, the particle size and distribution, the number of particles, and the average number of radicals per particle. The PU rigidity was controlled by varying the polyol chemical structure, the polyol MW (Mn), and by adding BD. The monomer feed rate was varied to study its influence on the process. It was observed that the PU particles that had been prepared with a higher MW polyol swelled better with MMA before the monomer‐starved conditions occurred. There seemed to be no significant discrepancies between the series with different PU seeds in the monomer‐starved conditions. The overall conversion depended on the monomer addition rate, and the polymerization rate acquired a constant value that was comparable to the value of the monomer addition rate. The instantaneous conversion increased slightly. The average particle size increased, and the total particle number in the reactor was constant and similar to the number of PU particles in the initial charge. The average number of radicals per particle increased. The differences between the system with a constant particle number and average number of radicals per particle and the system with a fixed radical concentration are discussed. The semibatch emulsion polymerization of MMA in the presence of PU particles studied was better compared to the system with a fixed radical concentration. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of fullerene (C60) on the radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in benzene was studied kinetically and by means of ESR, where dimethyl 2,2′-azobis(isobutyrate) (MAIB) was used as initiator. The polymerization rate (Rp) and the molecular weight of resulting poly(MMA) decreased with increasing C60 concentration ((0–2.11) × 10−4 mol/L). The molecular weight of polymer tended to increase with time at higher C60 concentrations. Rp at 50°C in the presence of C60 (7.0 × 10−5 mol/L) was expressed by Rp = k[MAIB]0.5[MMA]1.25. The overall activation energy of polymerization at 7.0 × 10−5 mol/L of C60 concentration was calculated to be 23.2 kcal/mol. Persistent fullerene radicals were observed by ESR in the polymerization system. The concentration of fullerene radicals was found to increase linearly with time and then be saturated. The rate of fullerene radical formation increased with MAIB concentration. Thermal polymerization of styrene (St) in the presence of resulting poly(MMA) seemed to yield a starlike copolymer carrying poly(MMA) and poly(St) arms. The results (r1 = 0.53, r2 = 0.56) of copolymerization of MMA and St with MAIB at 60°C in the presence of C60 (7.15 × 10−5 mol/L) were similar to those (r1 = 0.46, r2 = 0.52) in the absence of C60.

The reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was successfully carried out under pulsed microwave irradiation (PMI) at 69 °C with N,N‐dimethylformamide as a solvent and with azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN)/CuBr2/tetramethylethylenediamine as an initiation system. PMI resulted in a significant increase in the polymerization rate of RATRP. A 10.5% conversion for a polymer with a number‐average molecular weight of 34,500 and a polydispersity index of 1.23 was obtained under PMI with a mean power of 4.5 W in only 52 min, but 103 min was needed under a conventional heating process (CH) to reach a 8.3% conversion under identical conditions. At different [MMA]0/[AIBN]0 molar ratios, the apparent rate constant of polymerization under PMI was 1.5–2.3 times larger than that under CH. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Methacrylic acid (MAA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), methacrylamide, and oligomers of MAA and MMA were selected as a model of active radical species in living template polymerization using stereocomplex formation. The adsorption behaviors of the aforementioned model compounds were examined toward porous isotactic‐(it‐) poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) ultrathin films on a quartz crystal microbalance, which was prepared by the extracting of syndiotactic‐(st‐) poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) from it‐PMMA/st‐PMAA stereocomplexes. The apparent predominant adsorption of oligomers to monomers was observed in both PMAA and PMMA oligomers, suggesting that the mechanism of template polymerization follows the pick up mechanism. Although vinyl monomers were not incorporated into the porous it‐PMMA ultrathin film, both PMMA and PMAA oligomers were adsorbed at the initial stages. However, adsorbed amounts were limited to about 5 and 15% at 0.1 mol L?1, respectively, which are much smaller values than corresponding st‐polymers. The results imply that radical coupling reaction is prevented during template polymerization to support the resulting living polymerization. ATR‐IR spectral patterns of oligomer complexes and it‐PMMA slightly changed in both cases, suggesting complex formation. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Kinetics of methyl methacrylate polymerization initiated by a redox system [cumene hydroperoxide (CHP)/copper saccharinate] were studied in bulk at 20°C in the presence of accelerators such as N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (DMPT) and o-benzoic sulphimide (saccharin). Assuming a steady-state concentration of propagating radicals, the polymerization rate depends on the square root of the initiation rate and the kinetic orders with respect to each compound in the initiation step may be deduced. Initiation is first-order in CHP, copper saccharinate, and saccharin and second-order in DMPT. A reaction scheme consistent with these orders is proposed. The main features are the following: (1) CHP reduces rapidly Cu(II) to Cu(I); (2) a small fraction of Cu(I) is complexed with DMPT; (3) the complexed ions (Cu+, DMPT2) are strong reductants with respect to CHP whereas uncomplexed Cu+ are almost inactive; (4) the decomposition of CHP is strongly catalyzed by saccharin (protonated CHP is 13000 times more reactive than free CHP). Thus both accelerators are necessary to get high polymerization rates. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A series of (di)picolinic acids and their derivates are investigated as novel complexing tridentate or bidentate ligands in the iron‐mediated reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate in N,N‐dimethylformamide at 100 °C with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyrontrile as an initiator. The polymerization rates and polydispersity indices (1.32–1.8) of the resulting polymers are dependent on the structures of the ligands employed. Different iron complexes may be involved in iron‐mediated reverse atom transfer radical polymerization, depending on the type of acid used. 1H NMR spectroscopy has been used to study the structure of the resulting polymers. Chain‐extension reactions have been performed to further confirm the living nature of this catalytic system. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
