Using a high-viscosity Newtonian fluid, glycerol, an experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the stable spouting regime in conical spouted beds using four particle mixtures: a reference (monoparticles), a binary mixture, two ternary mixtures with flat and Gaussian distributions respectively. The mixtures were selected for particle diameters (dp) ranging from 1.09 to 4.98 mm and particle diameter ratios (dpL/dps) ranging from 1.98 to 4.0. Experimental data show that pressure fluctuation signals of the bed, as indicated by changes in their standard deviations, provide suitable information to identify the range of operational conditions for stable spouting. However, the analysis of skewness of curves of pressure fluctuation as a function of air velocity appears not sufficient to identify a particular flow regime. For glycerol in the spouting regime, the standard deviation is noted to increase with increasing glycerol concentration due to the growth of interparticle forces. The implications of these research findings on the drying of suspensions in conical spouted beds using glass bead mixtures are also discussed.  相似文献

Experiments were performed on spout characteristics of a cylindrical spout-fluidized bed (I.D. = 10 cm) with different static heights and two materials (Al2O3 and high density polyethylene). Results of minimum spouting velocity obtained in this study were compared with reported correlations for both spouted and spout-fluidized beds. Considerable discrepancies were found between the values obtained using different model equations as well as with respect to experimental results. Based on the Mathur–Gishler correlation, a new correlation is proposed for calculating the minimum spouting velocity that introduces the ratio U/Umf. It was found that the minimum spouting velocity decreases with increasing fluidizing gas velocity (U/Umf). The pressure drop at the point of minimum spouting velocity is also correlated using this dimensionless group and is presented in this work. This investigation demonstrates that the use of correlations reported in the literature that focus primarily on conical bottom spouted beds are not applicable to flat-bottom spouted and spout-fluidized beds.  相似文献

A study was carried out on the attrition in conical spouted beds using two sands with different properties for several bed heights and gas flow rates. Furthermore, the influence of a draft tube was studied at ambient and high temperatures. The main objective was to acquire knowledge on the attrition of sand beds for biomass pyrolysis in a pilot plant provided with a conical spouted bed reactor. A first-order kinetic equation is proposed for sand attrition in a conical spouted bed at room temperature. The predicted attrition rate constant depends exponentially on excess air velocity over that for minimum spouting. Both the draft tube and temperature increase contribute to reduction of attrition.  相似文献

Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) is one of the most valuable species in economic terms in the genus Setaria and plays an important role in human nutrition, animal feed, and agriculture. The present study described chemical, physical, and quality aspects of seeds of foxtail millet. Furthermore, the fluid-dynamic behavior of the seeds was evaluated in a conical spouted bed, which has advantages in terms of promoting the cyclic and regular movement of the seed particles. Dynamic parameters of spouting (minimum spouting velocity, stable and peak pressure drop) were determined and compared with those obtained from empirical correlations available in the literature. The results obtained from physical characterization showed that the seeds can be classified as belonging to Group D of Geldart, having a non-rough surface, mean diameter of 1.75 mm, and sphericity of 0.74. Fluid-dynamics analysis showed that the seeds are suitable for processing in a spouted bed, which is in agreement with the results of particle physical characterization.  相似文献

Three dimensionally coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element method (DEM) were used to investigate the flow of corn-shaped particles in a cylindrical spouted bed with a conical base. The particle motion was modeled by the DEM, and the gas motion by the k-? two-equation turbulent model. A two-way coupling numerical iterative scheme was used to incorporate the effects of gas–particle interactions in terms of momentum exchange. The corn-shaped particles were constructed by a multi-sphere method. Drag force, contact force, Saffman lift force, Magnus lift force, and gravitational force acting on each individual particle were considered in establishing the mathematical modeling. Calculations were carried out in a cylindrical spouted bed with an inside diameter of 200 mm, a height of 700 mm, and a conical base of 60°. Comparison of simulations with experiments showed the availability of the multi-sphere method in simulating spouting action with corn-shaped particles, but it depended strongly on the number and the arrangement of the spherical elements. Gas–solid flow patterns, pressure drop, particle velocity and particle concentration at various spouting gas velocity were discussed. The results showed that particle velocity reaches a maximum at the axis and then decreases gradually along the radial direction in the whole bed. Particle concentration increases along the radial direction in the spout region but decreases in the fountain region, while it is nearly constant in the annulus region. Increasing spouting gas velocity leads to larger pressure drop, remarkably increased speed of particle moving upward or downward, but decreased particle concentration.  相似文献

The axial and radial distributions of static pressures and vertical particle velocities of conical spouted beds have been simulated and compared with experimental data. Simulation results show that, among all factors investigated, the Actual Pressure Gradient (the APG term) in conical spouted beds, introduced as the default gravity term plus an empirical axial solid phase source term, has the most significant influence on static pressure profiles, followed by the restitution coefficient and frictional viscosity, while other factors almost have no effect. Apart from the solid bulk viscosity, almost all other factors affect the radial distribution of the axial particle velocity, although the influence of the APG term is less significant. For complex systems such as conical spouted beds where a fluidized spout region and a defluidized annulus region co-exist, the new term introduced in this work can improve the CFD simulation. Furthermore, for other systems with the Actual Pressure Gradient different from either fluidized beds or packed beds, the new approach can also be applied.  相似文献

Spatio-temporal velocity fields of an axisymmetric sudden expansion were measured using an ultrasonic velocity profiler and analyzed to investigate the transitional scheme of the spatial structure using two-dimensional Fourier transform and proper orthogonal decomposition techniques. The variation of the zero-crossing point, the fluctuation energy directed upstream and the eigenmode spectrum all have the same transitional scheme as a function of the Reynolds number. The transitional scheme can be classified Re d<1,000 for the laminar regime, Re d=1,000–3,000 for the transitional regime and Re d>3,000 for the turbulent regime. Especially, in the transitional regime, we found large changes in the flow structure at Re d=1,500 and 2,000. The jump at Re d=2,000 is caused by the change in the flow condition upstream. The jump at Re d=1,500 clearly shows a change in the spatial structure of the flow.  相似文献

The hydrodynamic behaviour of the spouted bed in the pharmaceutical industries has been found to be less addressed. The present paper has focused on the hydrodynamic characteristics of a spouted bed where the Cellets™ (Ph.Eur./USP) is adopted as the bed material. Experiments are carried out with three different static bed heights (H0) of shallow depth (2Di ≤ H0 < 3Di) using two different particle sizes. The spouted bed employed with Di/D0 of 5 has given the experimental information on external spouting (Ues) by mapping the pressure drop, and fountain height (Hf) against the superficial gas velocity (Ug) is represented with the image contours, which show the intrinsic behaviour. All the 1000 μm and 700 μm particles have been found to exhibit symmetric and asymmetric spouting. With increasing Ug, the fully suspended particles are limited to a certain height in the freeboard region due to the gas-solid cross-flow, which implies the clusters have identified with the image processing method.  相似文献

In this work, the mixing and segregation of binary mixtures of particles with different sizes and densities in a pseudo-2D spouted bed were studied experimentally. A binary mixture of solid particles including sand, gypsum, and polyurethane was used. To determine the particles mass fraction, and their mixing and segregation in the bed, an image-processing technique was developed and used. Important hydrodynamic parameters, such as the axial and radial segregation profiles of the solid particles, were measured. The effects of air velocity, particle size, and particle mass fraction were also evaluated. The flow regime in the spouted bed and the time required for reaching the equilibrium state of the solid particles were discussed. The results showed that the segregation of solid particles and the time to equilibrium both decreased when the air velocity increased to much larger than the minimum spouting velocity. The axial segregation increased with the diameter ratio of the particles. Upon completion of the test, coarse particles were concentrated mainly in the spout region, while fine particles were aggregated in the annulus region. Examination of the flow pattern in the spouted bed showed that the particles near the wall had longer flow paths, while those near the spout region had shorter flow paths.  相似文献

Spouted bed has drawn much attention due to its good heat and mass transfer efficiency in many chemical units. Investigating the flow patterns and heat and mass transfer inside a spouted bed can help optimize the spouting process. Therefore, in this study, the effects of particle shape on the hydrodynamics and heat transfer in a spouted bed are investigated. This is done by using a validated computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method (CFD–DEM) model, considering volume–equivalent spheres and oblate and prolate spheroids. The results are analysed in detail in terms of the flow pattern, microstructure, and heat transfer characteristics. The numerical results show that the prolate spheroids (Ar = 2.4) form the largest bubble from the beginning of the spouting process and rise the highest because the fluid drag forces can overcome the interlocking and particle–particle frictional forces. Compared with spherical particles, ellipsoidal spheroids have better mobility because of the stronger rotational kinetic energy resulting from the rough surfaces and nonuniform torques. In addition, the oblate spheroid system exhibits better heat transfer performance benefiting from the larger surface area, while prolate spheroids have poor heat transfer efficiency because of their orientation distribution. These findings can serve as a reference for optimizing the design and operation of complex spouted beds.  相似文献

The flow characteristics in a spouted-fluid bed differ from those in spouted or fluidized beds because of the injection of the spouting gas and the introduction of a fluidizing gas. The flow behavior of gas-solid phases was predicted using the Eulerian-Eulerian two-fluid model (TFM) approach with kinetic theory for granular flow to obtain the flow patterns in spouted-fluid beds. The gas flux and gas incident angle have a significant influence on the porosity and particle concentration in gas-solid spouted-fluid beds. The fluidizing gas flux affects the flow behavior of particles in the fountain. In the spouted-fluid bed, the solids volume fraction is low in the spout and high in the annulus. However, the solids volume fraction is reduced near the wall.

Effects of variable airflow on particle motion in spout-fluid beds are studied. Computational fluid dynamics using Navier–Stokes equations for the gas phase coupled with the discrete element method using Newton’s laws for the solid phase have been employed. Results indicate that increasing the fluidizing velocity diminishes dead zones and increases both the total height of the bed and the traversed distance by particles in the steady spout-fluid bed. In pulsed airflows, two configurations are investigated, namely, the spouted pulsed-fluidized bed with pulsed flow of the fluidizing velocity, and the pulsed-spouted fluidized bed with pulsed flow of the spouting velocity. The positive effect of pulsation on particle motion is shown and the effects of parameters, such as amplitude and frequency, on the dynamics of the bed are investigated in each configuration. An increase of up to 19% in traversed distance is found for the range studied, which suggests flow pulsation as a promising technique for increasing particle mixing in spout-fluid beds.  相似文献

A CFD-DEM reaction coupling model was established to simulate UF4 fluorination process, in which heat and mass transfer, heterogeneous chemical reaction, and particle shrinkage model were considered. The gas behavior was described by the conservation laws of mass, momentum, and energy. The solid phase is modeled with the discrete element method, considering the gas–solid interphase force, contact force, heat transfer, and chemical reaction models based on the discretized surface. Each particle can be individually tracked and associated with specific physical properties. The proposed CFD-DEM reaction coupling model based on particle shrinking reaction model with discretized surface was validated by the experimental and literature results at first. Then a multistage conical spouted bed was proposed and the process of UF4 fluoridation reaction in it was investigated. The fluidization characteristics and the concentration distribution of gaseous products in the spouted bed with an extended gas velocity range were obtained and analyzed. In addition, the effects of different parameters, such as superficial gas velocity, temperature, fluorine concentration, on fluoridation rate and the fluorine conversion rate were investigated based on the proposed CFD-DEM reaction coupling model. The results obtained in this work are beneficial for method development of the chemical reaction simulation research in particle scale using the CFD-DEM model, and useful for operation and equipment parameters design of the uranium tetrafluoride fluorinate industrial process in the future.  相似文献

Heat transfer characteristics in three-phase fluidized beds of floating bubble breakers have been studied in a 0.142 m I.D. x 2.0 m high Plexiglas column fitted with an axially mounted cylindrical heater.Effects of the liquid and gas velocities, the particle size, the volume ratio of floating bubble breaker to particles on phase holdup, the vertical bubble length, and the heat transfer coefficient have been determined. In the bubble-coalescing regime, the heat transfer coefficient in three-phase fluidized beds having the volume ratio Vf/Vs of 10–15% produced a maximum increase in heat transfer coefficient of about 20% in comparison to that in the bed without floating bubble breakers. Also, bubble length and gas-phase holdups exhibited their maximum and minimum values at a volume ratio of 10–15%. The heat transfer coefficient in three-phase fluidized beds of floating bubble breakers can be estimated from the surface renewal model with isotropic turbulence theory.Heat transfer coefficients expressed in terms of the Nusselt number have been correlated with the particle Reynolds number and the volume ratio of floating bubble breakers to particles.  相似文献

In this study, gaseous detonation diffraction from an annular channel was investigated with a streak camera and the critical pressure for transmission of the detonation wave was obtained. The annular channel was used to approximate an infinite slot resulting in cylindrically expanding detonation waves. Two mixtures, stoichiometric acetylene–oxygen and stoichiometric acetylene–oxygen with 70% Ar dilution, were tested in a 4.3 and 14.3 mm channel width (W). The undiluted and diluted mixtures were found to have values of the critical channel width over the cell size around 3 and 12 respectively. Comparing these results to values of the critical diameter (d c ), in which a spherical detonation occurs, a value of critical d c /W c near 2 is observed for the highly diluted mixture. This value corresponds to the geometrical factor of the curvature term between a spherical and cylindrical diverging wave. Hence, the result is in support of Lee’s proposed mechanism [Lee in Dynamics of Exothermicity, pp. 321, Gordon and Breach, Amsterdam, 1996] for failure due to diffraction based on curvature in stable mixtures such as those highly argon diluted with very regular detonation cellular patterns.  相似文献

Two hot-wire flow diagnostics have been developed to measure a variety of turbulence statistics in the buoyancy driven, air-helium Rayleigh–Taylor mixing layer. The first diagnostic uses a multi-position, multi-overheat (MPMO) single wire technique that is based on evaluating the wire response function to variations in density, velocity and orientation, and gives time-averaged statistics inside the mixing layer. The second diagnostic utilizes the concept of temperature as a fluid marker, and employs a simultaneous three-wire/cold-wire anemometry technique (S3WCA) to measure instantaneous statistics. Both of these diagnostics have been validated in a low Atwood number (A t  ≤ 0.04), small density difference regime, that allowed validation of the diagnostics with similar experiments done in a hot-water/cold-water water channel facility. Good agreement is found for the measured growth parameters for the mixing layer, velocity fluctuation anisotropy, velocity fluctuation p.d.f behavior, and measurements of molecular mixing. We describe in detail the MPMO and S3WCA diagnostics, and the validation measurements in the low Atwood number regime (A t  ≤ 0.04). We also outline the advantages of each technique for measurement of turbulence statistics in fluid mixtures with large density differences.  相似文献

The near wake of square cylinders with different corner radii was experimentally studied based on particle imaging velocimetry (PIV), laser doppler anemometry (LDA) and hotwire measurements. Four bluff bodies, i.e., r/d=0 (square cylinder), 0.157, 0.236, 0.5 (circular cylinder), where r is corner radius and d is the characteristic dimension of the bluff bodies, were examined. A conditional sampling technique was developed to obtain the phase-averaged PIV data in order to characterize quantitatively the effect of corner radii on the near-wake flow structure. The results show that, as r/d increases from 0 to 0.5, the maximum strength of shed vortices attenuates, the circulation associated with the vortices decreases progressively by 50%, the Strouhal number, St, increases by about 60%, the convection velocity of the vortices increases along with the widening of the wake width by about 25%, the vortex formation length and the wake closure length almost double in size. Meanwhile, both the vortex wavelength, λ x , and the lateral spacing, λ y , decrease as r/d increases, but the ratio of λ y to λ x is approximately 0.29, irrespective of r/d, which is close to the theoretical value of 0.281 for a stable Karman vortex street. The decrease in wavelength is probably responsible for the change in the flow structure from the approximately circular-shaped vortex at r/d=0 to the laterally stretched vortex at r/d=0.5. The leading edge corner radius is more important than the trailing one in influencing the near wake structure since it determines to a great extent the behavior of the streamlines, the separation angle and the base pressure. It is further found that the ratio of the mean drag coefficient to the total shed circulation, C d0, approaches a constant, about 0.25 for different bluff bodies in the subcritical flow regime. The streamwise evolution of vortices and the streamwise fluctuating velocity along the centerline for rounded cylinders are also discussed.  相似文献

The phenomenon of dispersion (transverse and longitudinal) in packed beds is summarized and reviewed for a great deal of information from the literature. Dispersion plays an important part, for example, in contaminant transport in ground water flows, in miscible displacement of oil and gas and in reactant and product transport in packed bed reactors. There are several variables that must be considered, in the analysis of dispersion in packed beds, like the length of the packed column, viscosity and density of the fluid, ratio of column diameter to particle diameter, ratio of column length to particle diameter, particle size distribution, particle shape, effect of fluid velocity and effect of temperature (or Schmidt number). Empirical correlations are presented for the prediction of the dispersion coefficients (D T and D L) over the entire range of practical values of Sc and Pem, and works on transverse and longitudinal dispersion of non-Newtonian fluids in packed beds are also considered.  相似文献
