ABSTRACT

A simple transflective liquid crystal display with a vertically aligned cell using a composite dielectric layer is demonstrated. The top substrate has a top planar common electrode, two transparent dielectric layers with different dielectric constants are coated on the bottom planar pixel electrode to generate linearly varying electric potential from the transmissive region (T region) to the reflective region (R region), while two bumpy reflectors are coated under the bottom substrate. In this device, with the composite dielectric layer, the common and pixel electrodes generate a strong electric potential in the T region and a relatively weak electric potential in the R region. Consequently, the T and R regions accumulate the same electro-optical characteristics. The simulation results show that the display exhibits reasonably low operating voltage, high optical efficiency and well-matched voltage-dependent transmittance (VT) and reflectance (VR) curves. Besides, the driving mode and the fabrication process of the transflective liquid crystal display are fairly simple and it is suitable for mobile applications.  相似文献

A single-cell-gap transflective liquid crystal display with a vertically aligned cell using square ring electrode is demonstrated. The top substrate has a top planar common electrode, a square ring pixel electrode is coated on the bottom substrate, while a bumpy reflector is coated under the bottom substrate. In this device, the planar common electrode and square ring pixel electrode generate a strong longitudinal electric field in the transmissive region (T region) and a weak fringe field in the reflective region (R region). As result, the T and R regions accumulate the same optical phase retardation. The simulation results show that the display exhibits reasonably low operating voltage, high transmittance and well-matched voltage-dependent transmittance and reflectance curves. Besides, fabrication process of the transflective liquid crystal display is very simple.  相似文献

We have studied cell gap-dependent driving voltage characteristics in a homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal (LC) cell driven by a fringe electric field, termed the fringe field switching (FFS) mode. The results show that for the FFS mode using a LC with positive dielectric anisotropy, the operating voltage decreases as the cell gap decreases, whereas it increases with a decreasing cell gap when using a LC with negative dielectric anisotropy. The difference between LCs is explained by simulation and experiment.  相似文献

A polymer-stabilised blue-phase liquid crystal display (PSBP-LCD) with double-side in-plane switching (DS-IPS) electrode structure is proposed. This structure shows the transflective characteristics because the bottom electrodes are made by aluminium material. For transflective displays, it exhibits a well-matched voltage-dependent transmission and reflection curves through designing the width and gap of the top electrodes. When a bias voltage is applied on the top electrodes, it exhibits as a good viewing angle controllable display.  相似文献

A transflective blue-phase liquid crystal display (TRBP-LCD) with dielectric protrusions is proposed. The dielectric protrusions are fixed on the in-plane-switching (IPS) electrodes. The potential drops very slowly in the dielectric protrusions, thus the total field penetrating depth is significantly enlarged and the operating voltage is lowered, which helps suppressing electrostriction effect. The different heights of the dielectric protrusions in the transmissive (T) and reflective (R) regions contribute to balance the optical phase retardation between the T and R regions. The simulation results verify that the proposed TRBP-LCD can achieve low operating voltage and good sunlight readability.  相似文献

The double-layer penetration electrode structure is proposed to obtain the low-operating voltage blue-phase liquid crystal display (BPLCD) with single electro-optic curve for red-green-blue (RGB) colours in every pixel, which is more suitable for the field-sequential-colour display. The different influences of electrode’s parameters and driving methods on the electro-optical properties of the proposed BPLCD are investigated. The results demonstrate that the operating voltage can be reduced from 53.80 V to 23.00 V for red colour. Besides, the coincident voltage-dependent transmittance curves for RGB colours are obtained by adjusting the applied voltage of sub-electrode. Thus, RGB lights can pass through every pixel with single electro-optic curve, which is good for resolution enhancement and single gamma driving. Besides, the maximum gamma shift of the proposed BPLCD is less than 0.1099 at 60° polar angle for the red colour, and the gamma shift difference between red and blue colours is only 0.0542. If the high dielectric constant material is used as the protrusion, the operating voltage can be further decreased, which is close to that of the BPLCD with wall-shaped electrode structure.  相似文献

Low-frequency driving of a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel to minimise power consumption has drawn much attention recently. In case an LCD panel is driven by a low-frequency fringe field, image flickering phenomenon is detected by the naked human eye when the sign of the applied electric field is reversed. We investigated the effect of electrode spacing on the image flickering phenomenon induced by the flexoelectric effect in a fringe-field-switching (FFS) liquid crystal cell. We found that the image flicker in an FFS cell under low-frequency driving can be eliminated in a simple manner by changing the electrode spacing.  相似文献

A blue-phase liquid crystal display (BPLCD) with low operating voltage and high transmittance is demonstrated by using a high dielectric material, which is used as an insulation layer or protrusion fixed on the pixel and common electrodes in in-plane switching (IPS) mode. The operating voltage is reduced to about 14 V and the transmittance is improved for the BPLCD with high dielectric constant protrusion. Compared with the conventional protrusion electrode structure, the proposed protrusion can make manufacturing process simple and easy because the electrode has no complex shape. The results will be significant in designing optimal BPLCDs.  相似文献

A single-cell-gap transflective polymer-stabilised blue-phase liquid crystal display with opposite polar pixel electrodes on an etched substrate is proposed. In the proposed structure, the space between common electrodes is adopted as transmissive region, and the space above the common electrode is adopted as reflective region. By optimising the electrode parameters of the transmissive and reflective regions, well-matched voltage-dependent transmittance and reflectance curves can be obtained. In addition, the device has good performances of low operating voltage (~3.2 V), high optical efficiency and a wide viewing angle.  相似文献

Transmittance characteristics were studied as a function of cell gap for a homogeneously aligned liquid crystal (LC) cell driven by a fringe‐electric field—named fringe‐field switching (FFS) mode. The light efficiency of a conventional LC cell using in‐plane switching and twisted nematic modes, where the LC director is determined by competition between elastic energy and electrical energy, does not depend on cell gap as long as the cell retardation value remains the same; i.e. only dielectric torque contributes to the deformation of the LC director. However, the transmittance of the FFS mode is dependent on the cell gap such that it decreases as the cell gap decreases, although the cell retardation value remains the same. This unusual behaviour (unlike that of conventional LC cells) arises because in the device the elastic and dielectric torques have the role of determining the LC director, such that the driving voltage giving rise to maximum transmittance becomes strongly dependent on the electrode position when the cell gap is as small as 2?µm. In addition, the LCs at the centre of the pixel and common electrodes are not sufficiently twisted because of a competition between the two elastic forces, which tries to twist the LCs in plane and hold them in their initial state by surface anchoring.  相似文献

In order to lower the operating voltage of blue-phase liquid crystal display (BPLCD), a BPLCD with insulating protrusion, which is sandwiched between dual-layer electrodes, is proposed. There are four electrodes in this structure; thus, we investigate different driving methods to find a proper driving method. The effect of protrusion’s dielectric constant on operating voltage of the proposed BPLCD is explored under various electrodes’ parameters. As a result, the operating voltage of the proposed BPLCD with protrusion’s dielectric constant of 1,000 is 9.8 V, which is reduced by ~ 4.67× compared with that of conventional in-plane switching (IPS) BPLCD (45.8 V). Moreover, the zigzag electrode structure is adopted to reduce the large off-axis image distortion index. Besides, the azimuth distortion index is defined to describe the gamma shift between the minimum and maximum gamma shift curves at a certain polar angle. The results show that the off-axis image distortion index can be reduced to 0.0834, the azimuth distortion index is 0.0810 and the viewing cone of contrast ratio larger than 1,000:1 is over 50ºas the zigzag proposed BPLCD is used.  相似文献

Fringe-field switching (FFS) liquid crystal (LC) mode is mainly used for high-end LC displays. At present, an LC with positive dielectric anisotropy is utilised, although light efficiency of the device in a white state is not maximised due to generation of tilt angle near the edge of electrodes along the field direction. In order to overcome the demerit, an LC with negative dielectric anisotropy has been challenged. In this article, FFS mode, which shows a high light efficiency and a low operating voltage, is investigated with the utilisation of fringe in-plane electric field. The optimised device shows improved electro-optic characteristics in comparison with not only conventional LC modes, but also previously proposed FFS device using a positive type of LC.  相似文献

We demonstrate a liquid crystal (LC) mode switched by mixed electric fields of in-plane and fringe fields, which are self-adjusted by adopting a bottom floating electrode for enhanced electro-optical properties. In our LC mode structure, conventional in-plane switching (IPS) electrodes are formed as pixel electrodes and common electrodes on an insulating layer and floating electrodes that are patterned per the sub-pixels. When the areas of the pixel and common electrodes are identical, the voltage of the bottom floating electrode is spontaneously determined to be half the value of the pixel voltage, which ideally generates symmetric fringe fields with both pixel and common electrodes. Due to the in-plane fields additionally generated between the pixel and common electrodes, the proposed LC structure operates by mixed-field switching (MFS), which shows higher transmittance than fringe-field switching (FFS) and IPS LC modes. Transmittance of the conventional FFS and IPS LC modes is highly sensitive to the in-plane electrode’s width (w) and spacing (l) condition, but the proposed MFS LC mode shows good transmittance without degradation with large variations of the in-plane electrode’s spacing-to-width ratio (l/w).  相似文献

A transflective polymer-stabilised blue-phase liquid crystal display (BP-LCD) with partitioned wall-shaped electrodes is proposed. The etched polymer layer contributes to balance the optical phase retardation between transmissive (T) and reflective (R) regions. The partitioned wall-shaped electrodes generate uniform and horizontal fields throughout the entire LC layer to induce isotropic-to-anisotropic transition in the blue-phase liquid crystal medium through Kerr effect. Consequently, the accumulated phase retardation along beam path is large, resulting in reasonable low operation voltage and high transmittance both in T and R regions. This approach enables the BP-LCD to be addressed by amorphous silicon thin-film transistors. Moreover, it exhibits wide viewing angle and a well-matched gamma curve.  相似文献

A fast response (sub-milliseconds) and polarisation-independent blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) microlens array with periodical double layer electrodes using different dielectric layers is proposed. The bottom double layer electrodes are coated with transparent and different dielectric layers to generate linearly varying electric potential from the centre to the edge, while the top planar electrode iridium tin oxide (ITO) electrode has a constant potential. As a result, gradient vertical electric fields are generated, and a gradient refractive index profile is obtained. When the applied voltage is changed, the focal length of the BPLC microlens array can be tuned from ∞ to 12.05 mm while keep a low operating voltage (~35Vrms). Besides, the driving mode (simplification driving) and fabrication process (using printing method or mold-pressing method) of the BPLC microlens array is very simple. The simulation results show that the BPLC microlens array is insensitive to the polarisation of incident light while keeping parabolic-like phase profile.  相似文献

The material with high dielectric constant can significantly affect the distribution of the electric field, so this kind of material has great potential in liquid crystal display. In this paper, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as alignment layer in liquid crystal display was analysed. The optical property, mechanical property, thermal stability and electrical property of PVDF were measured. Experiments show that the absorbance of PVDF material is 0.2 (or less) in visible light, which is better than the conventional alignment material polyimide (PI). The alignment effect can be generated by mechanical friction and the liquid crystal molecules are ordered or aligned, and PVDF can maintain good thermal stability as temperature is lower than 400°C. Since the dielectric constant of PVDF is usually between 6.0 and 8.0, it has significant effect on the distribution of the electric field in the liquid crystal display, and its dielectric loss is also less than PI. The lower operating voltage and the faster response time are obtained from the experiment. It can be confirmed by the experiments that PVDF could be used in liquid crystal display (LCD) as the alignment layer to improve LCD’s characteristics.  相似文献

A transflective polymer-stabilised blue-phase liquid crystal display (BP-LCD) with alternate electrodes is proposed. The alternate electrodes are composed of right triangle electrodes and slanted electrodes. To balance the optical phase retardation between the transmissive (T) and reflective (R) regions, the legs of the right triangle electrodes in the T region generate uniform horizontal electric field, the hypotenuses of the right triangle electrodes and slanted electrodes in the R region generate uniform oblique electric field. As result, the T and R regions obtain the same optical phase retardation. This display exhibits reasonably high transmittance, low operating voltage, wide viewing angle and well-matched voltage-dependent transmittance and reflectance curves.  相似文献

In order to improve dielectric barrier discharge reactor structure, an experimental study was carried out into its effect on nitric oxide (NO) removal. Different structures were distinguished by electrode connection, diameter, material and shape of inner electrode, and dielectric material, respectively. The results show that breakdown voltage is lower when a high voltage is applied to the outer electrode in the coaxial reactor; NO removal efficiency decreases with a smaller inner electrode diameter and increases when tungsten is used as the inner electrode material rather than copper or stainless steel. When the inner electrode is screw shaped, it improves the discharge power and NO removal efficiency. A similar higher NO removal efficiency is found when corundum is used as the dielectric material instead of ceramic or quartz. Therefore, these findings should become the basis for modifications to the electrode structure in order to improve NO removal efficiency.  相似文献

Large-aperture liquid crystal (LALC) lens with hole-patterned electrodes possesses small lens power and high addressing voltage because of the thick dielectric layer inserted between the hole-patterned electrode and LC layer. With an embedded narrow floating ring electrode (FRE), the lens power and addressing voltage of the LALC lens could be effectively increased and decreased, respectively. In this study, we analyse the electro-optic performance of LALC lens upon variation of the diameter of the embedded FRE. Results reveal that the FRE diameter determines the electric-field distribution and hence the electro-optic behaviour of the LALC lens. The LALC lens with embedded 2-mm-diameter FRE has excellent lens properties, such as low aberration, high focal quality and modulation transfer function performance comparable with solid glass lens.  相似文献
