Tetrahedral amorphous carbon films (ta-C) and nitrogen-containing ta-C films have been prepared using a magnetic-filtered plasma-deposition method in pure Ar, and Ar with N2 ambient, respectively. The structural and optical properties of these films have been studied using UV-visible optical absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and measurements of electrical conductivity in the temperature range from 300 to 500 K. The value of the optical band gap for the ta-C films deposited at suitable conditions were found to be larger than 3 eV. For nitrogen-containing ta-C films deposited at low partial pressure of nitrogen, the incorporation of a small amount of nitrogen will result in a slight drop in activation energy of conductivity and a decrease in band gap, which indicates that there are evidently both doping effect of nitrogen and graphitization of bonding. The study of surface morphology has been performed using atomic force microscopy (AFM), and results show that the surface roughness increases with the amount of nitrogen incorporated in ta-C films. The correlation between surface roughness and configuration of N atoms in ta-C network is also discussed.

In order to smooth the rough surface and further improve the wear-resistance of coarse chemical vapor deposition diamond films, diamond/tetrahedral amorphous carbon composite films were synthesized by a two-step preparation technique including hot-filament chemical vapor deposition for polycrystalline diamond (PCD) and subsequent filtered cathodic vacuum arc growth for tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C). The microstructure and tribological performance of the composite films were investigated by means of various characterization techniques. The results indicated that the composite films consisted of a thick well-grained diamond base layer with a thickness up to 150 μm and a thin covering ta-C layer with a thickness of about 0.3 μm, and sp3-C fraction up to 73.93%. Deposition of a smooth ta-C film on coarse polycrystalline diamond films was proved to be an effective tool to lower the surface roughness of the polycrystalline diamond film. The wear-resistance of the diamond film was also enhanced by the self-lubricating effect of the covering ta-C film due to graphitic phase transformation. Under dry pin-on-disk wear test against Si3N4 ball, the friction coefficients of the composite films were much lower than that of the single PCD film. An extremely low friction coefficient (∼0.05) was achieved for the PCD/ta-C composite film. Moreover, the addition of Ti interlayer between the ta-C and the PCD layers can further reduce the surface roughness of the composite film. The main wear mechanism of the composite films was abrasive wear.

The tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films with more than 80% sp3 fraction firstly were deposited by filtered cathode vacuum arc (FCVA) technique. Then the energetic nitrogen (N) ion was used to bombard the ta-C films to fabricate nitrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:N) films. The composition and structure of the films were analyzed by visible Raman spectrum and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The result shows that the bombardment of energetic nitrogen ions can induce the formation of CN bonds, the conversion of C-C bonds to CC bonds, and the increase of size of sp2 cluster. The CN bonds are made of CN bonds and C-N bonds. The content of CN bonds increases with the increment of N ion bombardment energy, but the content of C-N bonds is inversely proportional to the increment of nitrogen ion energy. In addition, C≡N bonds are not existed in the films. By the investigation of AFM (atom force microscopy), the RMS (root mean square) of surface roughness of the ta-C film is about 0.21 nm. When the bombarding energy of N ion is 1000 eV, the RMS of surface roughness of the ta-C:N film decreases from 0.21 to 0.18 nm. But along with the increment of the N ion energy ranging from 1400 to 2200 eV again, the RMS of surface roughness of the ta-C:N film increases from 0.19 to 0.33 nm.

Tetrahedral amorphous carbon films have been produced by pulsed laser deposition, at a wavelength of 248 nm, ablating highly oriented pyrolytic graphite at room temperature, in a 10-2 Pa vacuum, at fluences ranging between 0.5 and 35 Jcm-2. Both (100) Si wafers and wafers covered with a SiC polycrystalline interlayer were used as substrates. Film structure was investigated by Raman spectroscopy at different excitation wavelength from 633 nm to 229 nm and by transmission Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy. The films, which are hydrogen-free, as shown by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, undergo a transition from mainly disordered graphitic to up to 80% tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) above a threshold laser fluence of 5 J cm-2. By X-ray reflectivity roughness, density and cross-sectional layering of selected samples were studied. Film hardness as high as 70 GPa was obtained by nanoindentation on films deposited with the SiC interlayer. By scratch test film adhesion and friction coefficients between 0.06 and 0.11 were measured. By profilometry we obtained residual stress values not higher than 2 GPa in as-deposited 80% sp3 ta-C films.

Ag(100) homoepitaxy constitutes one of the simplest systems in which to study thin-film growth. Yet we find that the roughness variation with temperature is extraordinarily complex. Specifically, as the deposition temperature is reduced from 300 to 50 K, the roughness of 25 monolayer films first increases, then decreases, then increases again. A transition from mound formation to self-affine (semifractal) growth occurs at approximately 135 K. The underlying mechanisms are postulated. An atomistic model incorporating these mechanisms reproduces the experimental data quantitatively.

There are higher technical requirements for protecting layer of magnetic heads and disks used in future high-density storage fields. In this paper, ultra-thin (2 nm thickness) tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films were firstly prepared by filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) method, then a series of nitriding treatments were performed with nitrogen plasma generated using electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) microwave source. Here it highlighted the influence of nitrogen flow and applied substrate bias voltage on the structural characteristics of ta-C films during the plasma nitriding process. The chemical compositions, element depth distribution profiles, physical structures and bonding configurations of plasma-nitrided ta-C films were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and UV-vis Raman spectroscopy. The experimental results show that the carbon nitride compounds (CNx) are formed in nitrogenated ta-C films in which the N content and its depth distribution depends on bias voltage to large extent rather than N2 flow. The N content of nitrogenated ta-C films can reach 16 at.% for a substrate bias of −300 V and a N2 flow of 90 sccm. With increasing nitrogen content, there is less G peak dispersion and more ordering of structure. Furthermore, appropriate nitriding treatment (substrate bias: −100 V, N2 flow: 150 sccm) can greatly increase the fraction of sp3 and sp3C-N bonds, but the values begin to fall when the N content is above 9.8 at.%. All these indicate that suitable ECR-assisted microwave plasma nitriding is a potential modification method to obtain ultra-thin ta-C films with higher sp3 and sp3C-N fractions for high-density magnetic storage applications.

We have formed amorphous diamond (ta-C) coatings on Ti–6Al–4V substrates using a metal plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition (MEPIIID) technique, and characterized the mechanical properties and biological compatibility of the coating material. The hemocompatibility of the coating compared favorably with that of low temperature isotropic (LTI) carbon, with kinetic clotting time and hemolysis rate approximately the same as for LTI carbon, and platelet consumption about twice that of the latter. The mechanical properties were good, with a microhardness greater than that of the uncoated metal substrates, and high adhesion of >0.75 GPa (interface shear stress) as estimated from a thermal quench method. Glancing-angle X-ray diffraction measurements indicated the presence of a TiC transition layer, suggesting the formation of a Ti/TiC/ta-C multilayer structure, leading in turn to good film–substrate adhesion. We conclude that this kind of amorphous diamond coating could provide benefit as a biocompatible hard coating for Ti–6Al–4V substrate material.

The structure of thin films deposited by pulsed laser ablation (PLD) is strongly dependent on experimental conditions, like laser wavelength and fluence, substrate temperature and pressure. Depending on these parameters we obtained various kinds of carbon materials varying from dense, mainly tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), to less compact vertically oriented graphene nano-particles. Thin carbon films were grown by PLD on n-Si 〈100〉 substrates, at temperatures ranging from RT to 800°C, from a rotating graphite target operating in vacuum. The laser ablation of the graphite target was performed by a UV pulsed ArF excimer laser (λ=193 nm) and a pulsed Nd:YAG laser, operating in the near IR (λ=1064 nm). The film structure and texturing, characterised by X-ray diffraction analysis, performed at grazing incidence (GI-XRD), and the film density, evaluated by X-ray reflectivity measurements, are strongly affected both by laser wavelength and fluence and by substrate temperature. Micro-Raman and GI-XRD analysis established the progressive formation of aromatic clusters and cluster condensation into vertically oriented nano-sized graphene structures as a direct function of increasing laser wavelength and deposition temperature. The film density, negatively affected by substrate temperature and laser wavelength and fluence, in turn, results in a porous bulk configuration and a high macroscopic surface roughness as shown by SEM characterisation. These structural property modifications induce a relevant variation also on the emission properties of carbon nano-structures, as evidenced by field emission measurements. This paper reports the electrical, mechanical, structural and field emission properties of as grown and also boron and phosphorous incorporated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films, deposited using a filtered cathodic vacuum arc process. The effect of varying boron and phosphorous content (up to 2.0 at.% in to ta-C) on the conductivity (σD), activation energy (ΔE1), hardness, microstructure, emission threshold (Eturn-ON) and emission current density (J) at 12.5 V/μm of ta-C: B and ta-C: P films deposited at a high negative substrate bias of −300 V are reported. It is observed that both boron and phosphorous incorporation leads to a nearly an order increase in σD and corresponding decrease in ΔE1 and a slight increase in hardness as compared to as grown ta-C films. In the case of field assisted electron emission, it is observed that Eturn-ON increases and J decreases. The changes are attributed to the changes in the sp3/sp2 ratio of the films due to boron and phosphorous incorporation. The effect of boron on ta-C is to give a p-type effect whereas the effect of phosphorous gives n-type doping effect.

In this study, a series of graded multilayer ta-C films were investigated by varying their sublayer thickness ratios, in which each film sublayer was prepared at different substrate bias by filtered cathode vacuum arc (FCVA) method. The experimental results show that the graded multilayer film structure can effectively decrease the internal stress level of deposited ta-C film, and meanwhile the graded multilayer ta-C films still have high sp3 fractions. The applied substrate bias voltage and sublayer thickness ratio can apparently influence the microstructure characteristics and internal stress of the graded multilayer ta-C films. The graded multilayer ta-C film has larger sp3 fraction when applying a larger negative substrate bias voltage and having a thicker outer sublayer during the film deposition process. However, the internal stress in the as-deposited film also increases with larger thickness of the outer sublayer, and the optimal ratio of sublayer thicknesses is 1:1:1:1 for graded ta-C film with four sublayers.

We investigate the growth process and structural properties of phosphorus incorporated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:P) films which are deposited at different substrate biases by filtered cathodic vacuum arc technique with PH3 as the dopant source. The films are characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, residual stress measurement, UV/VIS/NIR absorption spectroscopy and temperature-dependent conductivity measurement. The atomic fraction of phosphorus in the films as a function of substrate bias is obtained by XPS analysis. The optimum bias for phosphorus incorporation is about −80 V. Raman spectra show that the amorphous structures of all samples with atomic-scaled smooth surface are not remarkably changed when PH3 is implanted, but some small graphitic crystallites are formed. Moreover, phosphorus impurities and higher-energetic impinging ions are favorable for the clustering of sp2 sites dispersed in sp3 skeleton and increase the level of structural ordering for ta-C:P films, which further releases the compressive stress and enhances the conductivity of the films. Our analysis establishes an interrelationship between microstructure, stress state, electrical properties, and substrate bias, which helps to understand the deposition mechanism of ta-C:P films.

The haemocompatibility of phosphorus-incorporated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:P) films, synthesized by filtered cathodic vacuum arc technique with PH3 as the dopant source, was assessed by in vitro platelet adhesion tests. Results based on scanning electron microscopy and contact angle measurements reveal that phosphorus incorporation improves the wettability and blood compatibility of ta-C film. Our studies may provide a novel approach for the design and synthesis of doped ta-C films to repel platelet adhesion and reduce thrombosis risk.

The growth front roughness of linear poly( p-xylylene) films grown by vapor deposition polymerization has been investigated using atomic force microscopy. The interface width w increases as a power law of film thickness d, w approximately d(beta), with beta = 0. 25+/-0.03, and the lateral correlation length xi grows as xi approximately d(1/z), with 1/z = 0.31+/-0.02. This novel scaling behavior is interpreted as the result of monomer bulk diffusion, and belongs to a new universality class that has not been discussed previously.

Stylolites are natural pressure-dissolution surfaces in sedimentary rocks. We present 3D high resolution measurements at laboratory scales of their complex roughness. The topography is shown to be described by a self-affine scaling invariance. At large scales, the Hurst exponent is zeta(1) approximately 0.5 and very different from that at small scales where zeta(2) approximately 1.2. A crossover length scale at around L(c)=1 mm is well characterized. Measurements are consistent with a Langevin equation that describes the growth of a stylolitic interface as a competition between stabilizing long range elastic interactions at large scales or local surface tension effects at small scales and a destabilizing quenched material disorder.

Si and Ge epitaxial growth from disilane and germane in a gas-source molecular beam epitaxy (GSMBE) system is followed in situ by reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) intensity oscillations. During Ge homoepitaxy, the growth rate on a Ge(100) substrate is found to be limited by surface hydrogen desorption below 350°C and by hydride adsorption above this temperature. Ge heteroepitaxy on Si results in incomplete layer growth leaving exposed Si at the surface during the initial stages of growth. Therefore, a gradual change in the observed Si surface concentration is seen as growth proceeds. Si heteroepitaxy on Ge follows the Volmer-Weber growth mode and proceeds via island formation. This, combined with Ge surface segregation, results in a slow decrease of the Ge surface population at the growth front. During heteroepitaxial growth, hydride reaction rates differ on Si and Ge surfaces, and therefore a changing concentration of the surface species is manifest as a gradual change in the observed oscillation frequency. This effect, observed during the early stages of growth, shows strong temperature dependence, consistent with previous observations on SiGe alloys. Following several layers of growth, however, the surfaces become rough. The influence of this roughness on the oscillation frequency is also discussed.

Many experimental results show that surface roughness of thin films can increase, decrease, stay constant or pass through the minimum with the change in substrate temperature, energy of arriving atoms or assisted beam (electrons, photons, ions), depending on material and interval of variation of those parameters. The aim of this paper is to explain and analyze this non-monotonous behavior of surface roughness by proposed kinetic model. The model is based on rate equations and includes processes of surface diffusion of adatoms, nucleation, growth and coalescence of islands in the case of thin films growth in Volmer-Weber mode. It is shown by modeling that non-monotonous dependence of surface roughness on the factors influencing energy of adatoms (e.g. temperature, assisted beam irradiation, accelerating voltage) occurs as a result of interplay between diffusion length of adatoms and size of islands, because both parameters depend on energy of adatoms. Variation of island size and diffusion length results in atomic jumps from islands forming rougher or smoother surface. The functions of surface roughness, island size, island density on diffusion length of adatoms and on other parameters are calculated and analyzed in this work.

In this paper the effects of surface roughness and annealing temperature (T) of latex coating films on adhesion are discussed for the different stages of the film formation process. The surface free energy of latex films was assessed in terms of practical work of adhesion (W) (or adherence) using a custom-built adhesion-testing device (ATD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle measurements. For preannealed latex films surface roughness averages (Ra) were determined from AFM height images and were related to the values of W obtained from ATD measurements at room temperature. The results obtained using these tests exhibiting surface behavior on different length scales indicate a dependence of the measured adhesion on surface roughness and temperature, as well as on the length scale of the measurements.First preannealed samples were studied, which were obtained by heat treatment above the respective glass transition temperatures (Tg). Increasing the temperature of preannealing resulted in a decrease of the adherence observed in ATD experiments at room temperature. However, on the nanoscale, using AFM, no significant variation of the adherence was observed. This observation can be explained by roughness arguments. Preannealing decreases roughness which results in lower adherence values measured by ATD while for essentially single asperity AFM experiments roughness has an insignificant effect. Specimens were also annealed over a constant period of time (90 min) at different temperatures. At the end of the heat treatment, adhesion was measured at the treatment temperature by ATD. The amplified effect of temperature observed in this case on adherence is attributed to the combination of roughness decrease and increasing test temperature. In a third set of experiments completely annealed samples were studied by ATD as well as by AFM as a function of temperature. With increasing T values ATD showed a decrease in adherence, which is attributed to a decreasing surface free energy of the annealed films at elevated T values. AFM, on the other hand, showed an opposite trend which is assigned to increasing penetration of the tip into the tip/wetting polymer samples versus increasing temperature. Finally, annealing isotherms as a function of time were investigated by ATD in situ at different temperatures. This last set of experiments allowed us to optimize annealing time and temperature to achieve complete curing.
