Abstract A group G has finite Hirsch-Zaicev rank rhz(G) = r if G has an ascending series whose factors are either infinite cyclic or periodic and if the number of infinite cyclic factors is exactly r. The authors discuss groups with finite Hirsch-Zaicev rank and the connection between this and groups having finite section p-rank for some prime p, or p=0. Groups all of whose abelian subgroups are of bounded rank are also discussed. For n a positive integer, a group G is called core-n if H/HGhas order at most n for every subgroup H of G (where HG is thenormal core of H, the largest normal subgroup of G containedin H). It is proved that a locally finite core-n group G hasan abelian subgroup whose index in G is bounded in terms ofn. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification 20D15, 20D60, 20F30.  相似文献

LetH, G be finite groups such thatH acts onG and each non-trivial element ofH fixes at mostf elements ofG. It is shown that, ifG is sufficiently large, thenH has the structure of a Frobenius complement. This result depends on the classification of finite simple groups. We conclude that, ifG is a finite group andAG is any non-cyclic abelian subgroup, then the order ofG is bounded above in terms of the maximal order of a centralizerC G(a) for 1≠aA.  相似文献

Let G be a finite group. A subgroup H of G is said to be weakly s-supplemented in G if there exists a subgroup K of G such that G = HK and HK ≤ H s G , where H s G is the subgroup of H generated by all those subgroups of H which are s-quasinormal in G. In this article, we investigate the structure of G under the assumption that some families of subgroups of G are weakly s-supplemented in G. Some recent results are generalized.  相似文献

In [2] we proved that ifG is a finite group containing an involution whose centralizer has order bounded by some numberm, thenG contains a nilpotent subgroup of class at most two and index bounded in terms ofm. One of the steps in the proof of that result was to show that ifG is soluble, then ¦G/F(G) ¦ is bounded by a function ofm, where F (G) is the Fitting subgroup ofG. We now show that, in this part of the argument, the involution can be replaced by an arbitrary element of prime order.  相似文献

LetH be an ℝ-subgroup of a ℚ-algebraic groupG. We study the connection between the dynamics of the subgroup action ofH onG/G and the representation-theoretic properties ofH being observable and epimorphic inG. We show that ifH is a ℚ-subgroup thenH is observable inG if and only if a certainH orbit is closed inG/G ; that ifH is epimorphic inG then the action ofH onG/G is minimal, and that the converse holds whenH is a ℚ-subgroup ofG; and that ifH is a ℚ-subgroup ofG then the closure of the orbit underH of the identity coset image inG/G is the orbit of the same point under the observable envelope ofH inG. Thus in subgroup actions on homogeneous spaces, closures of ‘rational orbits’ (orbits in which everything which can be defined over ℚ, is defined over ℚ) are always submanifolds.  相似文献

Abstract

A subgroup H of G is said to be c-normal in G if there exists a normal subgroup N of G such that HN = G and H ∩ N ≤ H G  = Core(H). We extend the study on the structure of a finite group under the assumption that all maximal or minimal subgroups of the Sylow subgroups of the generalized Fitting subgroup of some normal subgroup of G are c-normal in G. The main theorems we proved in this paper are:

Theorem Let ? be a saturated formation containing 𝒰. Suppose that G is a group with a normal subgroup H such that G/H ∈ ?. If all maximal subgroups of any Sylow subgroup of F*(H) are c-normal in G, then G ∈ ?.

A groupG hasweak polynomial subgroup growth (wPSG) of degree ≤α if each finite quotient Ḡ ofG contains at most │Ḡ│ a subgroups. The main result is that wPSG of degree α implies polynomial subgroup growth (PSG) of degree at mostf(α). It follows that wPSG is equivalent to PSG. A corollary is that if, in a profinite groupG, thek-generator subgroups have positive “density” δ, thenG is finitely generated (the number of generators being bounded by a function ofk and δ).  相似文献

LetG be a finite group admitting an automorphismα withm fixed points. Suppose every subgroup ofG isr-generated. It is shown that (1)G has a characteristic soluble subgroupH whose index is bounded in terms ofm andr, and (2) if the orders ofα andG are coprime, then the derived length ofH is also bounded in terms ofm andr. All groups considered are finite. A group has a trivial Frattini subgroup if and only if every nontrivial normal subgroup has a proper supplement. The property is normal subgroup closed, but neither subgroup nor quotient closed. It is subgroup closed if and only if the group is elementary, i.e. all Sylow subgroups are elementary abelian. If G is solvable, then G and all its quotients have trivial Frattini subgroup if and only if every normal subgroup of G has a complement. For a nilpotent group, every nontrivial normal subgroup has a supplement if and only if the group is elementary abelian. Consequently, the center of a group in which every normal subgroup has a supplement is an elementary abelian direct factor.  相似文献

It has been conjectured by Mann that the infinite sum Σ H μ(H,G)/|G:H| s , where H ranges over all open subgroups of a finitely generated profinite group G, converges absolutely in some half right plane if G is positively finitely generated. We prove that the conjecture is true if the nonabelian crowns of G have bounded rank. In particular Mann’s conjecture holds if G has polynomial subgroup growth or is an adelic profinite group.  相似文献

For a family of group words w we show that if G is a profinite group in which all w-values are contained in a union of finitely many subgroups with a prescribed property, then the verbal subgroup w(G) has the same property as well. In particular, we show this in the case where the subgroups are periodic or of finite rank. If G contains finitely many subgroups G 1, G 2, . . . , G s of finite exponent e whose union contains all γ k -values in G, it is shown that γ k (G) has finite (e, k, s)-bounded exponent. If G contains finitely many subgroups G 1, G 2, . . . , G s of finite rank r whose union contains all γ k -values, it is shown that γ k (G) has finite (k, r, s)-bounded rank.  相似文献

Abstract

First, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for torsion-free finite rank subgroups of arbitrary abelian groups to be purifiable. An abelian group G is said to be a strongly ADE decomposable group if there exists a purifiable T(G)-high subgroup of G. We use a previous result to characterize ADE decomposable groups of finite torsion-free rank. Finally, in an extreme case of strongly ADE decomposable groups, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for abelian groups of finite torsion-free rank to be splitting.  相似文献

Let H be a subgroup of a finite group G. H is said to be λ-supplemented in G if G has a subgroup T such that G = HT and HT ≤ H SE , where H SE denotes the subgroup of H generated by all those subgroups of H, which are S-quasinormally embedded in G. In this article, some results about the λ-supplemented subgroups are obtained, by which we determine the structure of some classes of finite groups. In particular, some new characterizations of p-supersolubility of finite groups are given under the assumption that some primary subgroups are λ-supplemented. As applications, a number of previous known results are generalized.  相似文献

Suppose G is a finite group and H is subgroup of G. H is said to be s-permutably embedded in G if for each prime p dividing |H|, a Sylow p-subgroup of H is also a Sylow p-subgroup of some s-permutable subgroup of G; H is called weakly s-permutably embedded in G if there are a subnormal subgroup T of G and an s-permutably embedded subgroup H se of G contained in H such that G = HT and H ∩ T ≤ H se . We investigate the influence of weakly s-permutably embedded subgroups on the structure of finite groups. Some recent results are generalized.  相似文献

Abstract

For an element a of a group G,let S(a) denote the semigroup generated by all conjugates of a in G. We prove that if G is solvable of finite rank and 1 ? S(a) for all 1 ≠ a ∈ G,then ?a G ?/?b G ? is a periodic group for every b ∈ S(a). Conversely if every two generator subgroup of a finitely generated torsion-free solvable group G has this property then G has finite rank, and if every finitely generated subgroup has this property then every partial order on G can be extended to a total order.  相似文献

A subgroup H of finite group G is called pronormal in G if for every element x of G, H is conjugate to H x in 〈H, H x 〉. A finite group G is called PRN-group if every cyclic subgroup of G of prime order or order 4 is pronormal in G. In this paper, we find all PRN-groups and classify minimal non-PRN-groups (non-PRN-group all of whose proper subgroups are PRN-groups). At the end of the paper, we also classify the finite group G, all of whose second maximal subgroups are PRN-groups.  相似文献
