In this study, experiments were performed with a tubular wet electrostatic precipitator (wESP) to evaluate its effectiveness for the removal of mass- and number-based DPM emissions. A nonroad diesel generator utilizing a low sulfur diesel fuel (500 ppmw) operating under varying load conditions was used as a stationary DPM emission source. The US EPA Method 5 “Sampling Method for Stationary Sources” and Method 1A “Sampling and Velocity Traverses for Stationary Sources with Small Stacks or Ducts” were adopted as reference methods for measurement of DPM mass concentration. An electrical low-pressure impactor (ELPI) was used to quantify the DPM number concentration in the diluted exhaust gas at each tested condition. The wESP was evaluated with respect to varying engine loads and to different operational control parameters, such as corona power and gas residence time, to determine their effect on overall removal efficiency. The results show that the removal efficiency of the wESP increased as the engine loads decreased principally due to an increase in gas residence time and a decrease in DPM concentrations. At a constant wESP voltage and engine load, the increase of gas residence time within the wESP led to a significant increase in total DPM removal efficiency. In addition, total DPM removal efficiency was found to be directly related to the corona power, with increasing removal efficiency measured for increases in corona power. The linear correlation of DPM effective migration velocity and superficial gas velocity was established and an empirical equation is given. The wESP appears to be a promising alternative method for control of mass-based as well as number-based DPM emissions.  相似文献

Exposure to airborne ultrafine and nanoparticles has raised increased interest over the recent years as they may cause adverse health effects. A common way to quantify exposure to airborne particles is to measure particle number size distributions through electrical mobility analysis. Four mobility particle sizers have been subject to a detailed intercomparison study, a TSI Fast Mobility Particle Sizer (FMPS), a Grimm Sequential Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS+C), and two TSI Scanning Mobility Particle Sizers (SMPSs), equipped with two different condensation particle counters (CPC). The instruments were challenged with either NaCl or diesel soot particles. The results indicate that the sizing of all tested instrument was similar with only the FMPS size distributions consistently shifted toward smaller particle sizes. The Grimm SMPS generally measured higher concentrations and broader distributions than the TSI instruments. The two Grimm DMAs agreed well with each other; however, the TSI SMPS results showed a reproducible dependence on the flow rates. While TSI and Grimm SMPS delivered consistent results for sodium chloride (NaCl) and diesel soot, the FMPS seemed to react differently to the changing particle source than the SMPSs, which may be caused by either the different morphology or particle size dependent effects. For NaCl particles, the FMPS delivered the narrowest distributions and concentrations comparable with TSI SMPSs, whereas for diesel soot, it delivered the broadest distributions and higher concentrations than TSI SMPSs.  相似文献

Nanoparticles are used in many applications because of their novel properties compared to bulk material. A growing number of employees are working with nanomaterials and their exposure to nanoparticles trough inhalation must be evaluated and monitored continuously. However, there is an ongoing debate in the scientific literature about what are the relevant parameters to measure to evaluate exposure to level. In this study, three types of nanoparticles (ammonium sulphate, synthesised TiO2 agglomerates and aerosolised TiO2 powder, modes in a range of 30–140 nm mobility size) were measured with commonly used aerosol measurement instruments: scanning and fast mobility particle sizers (SMPS, FMPS), electrical low pressure impactor (ELPI), condensation particle counter (CPC) together with nanoparticle surface area monitor (NSAM) to achieve information about the interrelations of the outputs of the instruments. In addition, the ease of use of these instruments was evaluated. Differences between the results of different instruments can mainly be attributed to the nature of test particles. For spherical ammonium sulphate nanoparticles, the data from the instruments were in good agreement while larger differences were observed for particles with more complex morphology, the TiO2 agglomerates and powder. For instance, the FMPS showed a smaller particle size, a higher number concentration and a narrower size distribution compared with the SMPS for TiO2 particles. Thus, the type of the nanoparticle was observed to influence the data obtained from these different instruments. Therefore, care and expertise are essential when interpreting results from aerosol measurement instruments to estimate nanoparticle concentrations and properties.  相似文献

In-cylinder and exhaust soot particle size measurements were carried out using time-resolved laser induced incandescence and electrical mobility spectrometer techniques in a single cylinder optical diesel engine and multi-cylinder high-speed diesel engine. The temporal decay of the laser induced incandescence signal from a polydisperse nanoparticle ensemble of soot during transient diesel combustion is shown to be described by both a single-lognormal distribution as well as multi-lognormal size distribution. However, a multi-lognormal particle size distribution is introduced in the existing model for a comprehensive characterisation and realistic reconstruction of the size distribution. Detailed theoretical analysis of multi-lognormal size distribution along with its application to the experimentally measured soot particle size is validated in this work. These results were also qualitatively compared and independently verified by the experimental results obtained by the electrical mobility spectrometer and published transmission electron microscopy data. These findings reveal that the in-cylinder and the exhaust soot particle size distributions in engines are better represented by a multi-lognormal size distribution.  相似文献

The knowledge of size‐segregated elemental concentrations in atmospheric particulate matter (PM) gives a useful contribution to the complete chemical characterisation; this information can be obtained by sampling with multi‐stage cascade impactors. In this work, samples were collected using a low‐pressure 12‐stage Small Deposit Impactor and a 13‐stage rotating Micro Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor?. Both impactors collect the aerosol in an inhomogeneous geometry, which needs a special set‐up for X‐ray analysis. This work aims at setting up an energy dispersive X‐ray fluorescence (ED‐XRF) spectrometer to analyse quantitatively size‐segregated samples obtained by these impactors. The analysis of cascade impactor samples by ED‐XRF is not customary; therefore, as additional consistency test some samples were analysed also by particle‐induced X‐ray emission (PIXE), which is more frequently applied to size‐segregated samples characterised by small PM quantities. A very good agreement between ED‐XRF and PIXE results was obtained for all the detected elements in samples collected with both impactors. The good inter‐comparability proves that our methodology is reliable for analysing size‐segregated samples by ED‐XRF technique. The advantage of this approach is that ED‐XRF is cheaper, easier to use, and more widespread than PIXE, thus promoting an intensive use of multi‐stage impactors. Simulated data from static light scattering produced by several particle size distributions (PSD) of spherical particles in dilute solution is analyzed with a regularized non‐negative least squares method (r‐NNLS). Strong fluctuations in broad PSD's obtained from direct application of NNLS are supressed through an averaging procedure, as introduced long ago in the inversion problem in dynamic light scattering. A positive correlation between the best PSD obtained from several averaging schemes and the condition number of the respective data transfer matrices was obtained. The performance of the method is found to be similar to that of constrained regularization (CONTIN), which uses also NNLS as a starting solution, but incorporates another regularizing strategy.  相似文献

The novel electrohydrodynamically-assisted electrostatic precipitator (EHD ESP) was developed to suppress particle reentrainment for collection of low resistive diesel particulates. The collection efficiency was compared between vertically and horizontally oriented electrodes of the EHD ESP using 400 cc diesel engine. The particle size dependent collection efficiency was evaluated for the particle size ranging in 20 to 5000 nm using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and a particle counter (PC). Both horizontally and vertically oriented EHD ESP showed an excellent suppression of particle reentrainment. However, the horizontally oriented electrode EHD ESP showed significantly improved for the particle size of 300–500 nm in comparison with vertically oriented electrode EHD ESP, resulting in more than 90% collection efficiency for all particle size range. The EHD ESP has high potential especially for highly concentrated marine diesel engine emission control.  相似文献

The applicability of different inversion algorithms to retrieve a size distribution of particles in air from light scattering is examined. The investigation is focused on an optical measurement setup with an elliptical mirror as the main optical element. In order to evaluate the capabilities of the individual inversion methods, light scattering by spherical particles is simulated in the size ranges of 0.1 – 10 μm and 0.05 – 1 μm. The distribution of the particle diameters is modeled with three different parametric functions, i.e., RRSB, logarithmic‐normal and a more specific distribution from an ultrasonic nebulizer. Different kinds of noise, e.g., additive and/or multiplicative, are applied in different levels to the simulated scattering measurement to include real physical measurement conditions. The convergence properties of the scattering simulation are investigated with respect to the number of size classes, and thus, information concerning the size resolution required to simulate a measurement for a given particle size distribution is obtained. Further parameters of interest are the minimum angular resolution of the measurements, the number of size classes of the retrieved particle size distribution and the measured polarization of the scattered light.  相似文献

Laser‐induced incandescence (LII) is introduced as a valuable tool for the characterization of nanoparticles. This optical measurement technique is based on the heating of the particles by a short laser pulse and the subsequent detection of the thermal radiation. It has been applied successfully for the investigation of soot in different fields of application, which is described here in the form of an overview with a focus on work done at the LTT‐Erlangen during the last 10 years. In laboratory flames the soot primary particle size, volume concentration, and relative aggregate size have been determined in combination with the number density of primary particles. Furthermore, the primary particle sizes of carbon blacks have been measured in situ and online under laboratory conditions and also in production reactors. Measurements with different types of commercially available carbon black powders, which were dispersed in a measurement chamber yielded a good correlation between LII results and the specified product properties. Particle diameters determined by LII in a furnace black reactor correlate very well with the CTAB‐absorption number, which is a measure for the specific surface area. It turned out that the LII method is not affected by variations of the aggregate structure of the investigated carbon blacks. The LII signal also contains information on the primary particle size distribution, which can be reconstructed by the evaluation of the signal decay time at, at least, two different time intervals. Additionally, soot mass concentrations have been determined inside diesel engines and online measurements were performed in the exhaust gas of such engines for various engine conditions simultaneously providing information about primary particle size, soot volume, and number concentration. The LII results exhibit good correlation with traditional measurement techniques, e.g., filter smoke number measurements. In addition to the soot measurements, primarily tests with other nanoparticles like TiO2 or metal particles are encouraging regarding the applicability of the technique for the characterization of such different types of nanoparticles.  相似文献

The present work is focused on multi-dimensional simulations of combustion in diesel engines. The primary objective was to test, in a diesel engine framework, a soot particle size model to represent the carbon particle formation and calculate the corresponding size distribution function. Simulations are performed by means of a parallel version of the KIVA3V numerical code, modified to adopt detailed kinetics reaction mechanisms. A skeletal reaction scheme for n-heptane autoignition has been extended, to include PAH kinetics and carbonaceous particle formation and consumption rates: the full reaction set is made up of 82 gas species and 50 species accounting for the particles, thus the complete reaction scheme comprises 132 species and 2206 reaction steps. Four different engine operative conditions, varying engine speed and load, are taken into account and experimentally tested on a single cylinder diesel engine fuelling pure n-heptane. Computed particle size distribution functions are compared with corresponding measurements at the exhaust, performed by a differential mobility spectrometer.

A satisfying agreement between computed and measured combustion profiles is obtained in all the conditions.

A reasonable aerosol evolution can be obtained, yet in all the cases the model exhibits the tendency to overestimate the number of particles within the range 5–160 nm. Moreover calculations predict a nucleation mode not detected by the available instrument. According to the simulations, the total number and size of the nascent particles would not depend on the operative conditions, while the features of the larger aggregates distinctly vary with the engine functioning.  相似文献

For the measurement of particles size with backscattering method, the suitable range of particles size measurement have been presented by independent algorithm in Visual‐infrared incident spectrum. We defined the range according to the retrieved results based on the analysis and comparison to many kinds of R‐R distribution function. The simulation computation results showed that the particles size measurement range is from 0.05 μm to 18 μm with incident spectrum from 0.4 μm to 2 μm and different refractive index. The results retrieved were satisfied even if 1 % noise was added into the backscattering intensity.  相似文献

A method for recovering the size distribution of spherical particles from small angle scattering data by using a Monte Carlo interference function fitting algorithm is presented. The method is based on the direct simulation of the small angle scattering data upon the assumption of non‐interacting hard sphere ensembles (“dilute” solution approximation). The algorithm for retrieving the particle size distribution does not require any additional parameters apart from the input of the scattering data. The fitting strategy necessarily implies positive particle size distributions, while preserving the advantage of the indirect transformation method for data desmearing. Furthermore, the present approach does not use any regularisation procedures of the best fit solution and favours smooth particle size distributions. The Monte Carlo procedure has been tested against several simulated cases with various types of mono‐ and bi‐modal size distributions and different noise levels. In the special case of non‐interacting spheres, the Monte Carlo fitting algorithm had the same retrieving ability as the well assessed indirect transformation, structure interference and maximum entropy methods. Finally, the algorithm was applied to retrieve the distribution of spherical nanopowders produced by gas‐to‐particle conversion both as free powder and as reinforcing second‐phase agent in polymer nanocomposites.  相似文献

A new PM2.5 inlet, based on the particle cup impactor configuration, was designed for sampling fine particles smaller than 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter and for operating at a flow rate of 5 l/min, as the devices, which are used to analyze the chemical composition of the particles, have good efficiency only at low‐volume flow rates. The performance of the inlet was evaluated in a test chamber, and the optimum dimensions of the particle cup impactor were determined by varying the nozzle‐to‐cup distance. Additional experiments covering flow rates between 3 and 10 l/min with particle sizes between 0.8 and 5.0 μm were carried out in the test chamber. The performance indicated that a nozzle‐to‐cup distance of 1.1 mm would yield a sharp size cutoff. The results from the tests showed that the inlet had a cutoff size of 2.55 μm in aerodynamic diameter at a flow rate of 5 l/min.  相似文献

A method of separation of polydisperse dust particles in the plasma of radio‐frequency (RF) capacitive discharge is considered. Investigations of plasma equipotential field enabled us to determine conditions for separation of polydisperse dust particles. The simplicity of the technology made it possible to obtain small dispersed particles of different materials. Samples of small dispersed microparticles of silica and alumina were obtained. The size and chemical composition of samples were examined using a Quanta 3D 200i scanning electron microscope (SEM, FEI, USA). The average size of separated silica nanoparticles was 600 nm, that of silica and alumina microparticles was 5 μm. Two separation methods were developed: the first one used a special trap and shape of the bottom electrode of RF discharge (for separation of microparticles) and the second used an electrical trap (for separation of nanoparticles). The graphs of particle size distribution were constructed using graphical and mathematical calculations.

The formation of submicron TiO2 smoke (a gas‐phase suspension) from titanium tetrachloride in a low‐pressure hydrolysis reaction in a simple reactor configuration has been studied. Particle size distribution, particle morphology and degree of crystallinity have been characterized as a function of reaction conditions. Highly crystalline anatase TiO2 particles with narrow size distribution and smaller particle size were formed at high reactor temperature, while larger, amorphous particles were found at lower reactor temperatures. These results are consistent with literature studies. At 817 °C, small (450 nm), spherical, unagglomerated particles could be produced. A gas‐phase dispersion of these particles is intended for use as seeds in subsequent kinetic studies of titanium dioxide formation reactions involving a rapid compression methodology.  相似文献

Surface area was estimated by three different methods using number and/or mass concentrations obtained from either two or three instruments that are commonly used in the field. The estimated surface area concentrations were compared with reference surface area concentrations (SAREF) calculated from the particle size distributions obtained from a scanning mobility particle sizer and an optical particle counter (OPC). The first estimation method (SAPSD) used particle size distribution measured by a condensation particle counter (CPC) and an OPC. The second method (SAINV1) used an inversion routine based on PM1.0, PM2.5, and number concentrations to reconstruct assumed lognormal size distributions by minimizing the difference between measurements and calculated values. The third method (SAINV2) utilized a simpler inversion method that used PM1.0 and number concentrations to construct a lognormal size distribution with an assumed value of geometric standard deviation. All estimated surface area concentrations were calculated from the reconstructed size distributions. These methods were evaluated using particle measurements obtained in a restaurant, an aluminum die-casting factory, and a diesel engine laboratory. SAPSD was 0.7–1.8 times higher and SAINV1 and SAINV2 were 2.2–8 times higher than SAREF in the restaurant and diesel engine laboratory. In the die casting facility, all estimated surface area concentrations were lower than SAREF. However, the estimated surface area concentration using all three methods had qualitatively similar exposure trends and rankings to those using SAREF within a workplace. This study suggests that surface area concentration estimation based on particle size distribution (SAPSD) is a more accurate and convenient method to estimate surface area concentrations than estimation methods using inversion routines and may be feasible to use for classifying exposure groups and identifying exposure trends.  相似文献

Airborne particles were investigated in the central part of Riga during October 2000. Mass, black carbon and elemental concentrations of airborne particles were measured on Teflon filters from a dichotomous impactor, which samples fine (<2.5 µm) and coarse (2.5–10 µm) fractions of particles. In order to obtain more detailed information on the size distributions of different elements, a seven‐stage Batelle cascade impactor was used, in which quartz plates treated with silicone grease were utilized as backing for the different stages. Total reflection x‐ray fluorescence (TXRF) and energy‐dispersive x‐ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry were used for elemental analysis on the quartz plates and Teflon filters. The environmentally mobile part of the fine particle elements in the aerosol was determined by subtraction of x‐ray spectra measured before and after sequential leaching of the aerosol filters. The results of the different measurements show that naturally generated street dust and soil particles are dominant in coarse particles, whereas particles generated by human activities are dominant in the size fraction <0.5 µm. This study is a compilation of results obtained during the cleanout of deposition equipment such as chemical vapor deposition or physical vapor deposition The measurement campaigns aimed to evaluate the potential exposure to nanoaerosols in the occupational environment and were conducted in the workspace. The characterization of aerosols includes measurements of the concentration using condensation particle counters and measurements of the size distribution using fast mobility particle sizer, scanning mobility particle sizer, and electrical low pressure impactor (ELPI). Particles were sampled using collection membranes placed on the ELPIs stages. The samples were analyzed with an SEM?CEDS to provide information including size, shape, agglomeration state, and the chemical composition of the particles. The majority of the time, no emission of nanoparticles (NPs) was measured during the use of the molecular deposition equipment or when opening the chambers, mainly due to the enclosed processes. On the other hand, the maintenance of the equipment, and especially the cleanout step, could induce high concentrations of NPs in the workplace following certain processes. Values of around 1 million particles/cm3 were detected with a size distribution including a high concentration of particles around 10?nm.  相似文献
