The kinetic of the curing process in the ethylenediamine (EDA)-poly (bisphenol A-co-epichlorohydrin) glycidyl end-capped (DGEBA) mixture modified with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was studied. The epoxy component was labeled with a fluorescence group (dansyl) treating the DGEBA with the reactive dansyl derivative DNS-EDA. Dynamic DSC experiments were carried out and from their results the effect of the PEO composition on the epoxy curing was discussed. Furthermore, the effect of cure temperature and PEO composition on the morphology and crystallinity of the blend were studied as well. The morphologic study was carried out using complementarily optical transmission (TOM) and epifluorescence (EFM) microscopy. It was observed that: i) the addition of a non-reactive thermoplastic leads to a dilution effect of the reactive groups and therefore a decrease of the epoxy amine reaction rate; ii) the PEO composition does not seem to affect the non catalyzed process of the epoxy curing, while an increase in the PEO fraction within the epoxy/PEO mixture seems to change the mechanism of the cure reaction; iii) dynamic DSC scans, TOM and EFM images and steady state fluorescence spectra of the cured samples suggest that when the curing temperature increases there is an increase in the miscibility between PEO and the epoxy-amine reaction mixture; and iv) a reduction in the PEO/cured epoxy miscibility as the fraction of PEO increases was observed.

Epoxy resins (DGEBA) were cured by cationic latent thermal catalysts, that is, N‐benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH) and N‐benzylquinoxalinium hexafluoroantimonate (BQH) to investigate the effect of substituted benzene group on cure kinetics and mechanical properties of epoxy system. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was undertaken for activation energy of the system. It was also characterized in terms of flexural, fracture toughness, and Izod impact strengths for the mechanical tests. As a result, the cure reaction of both epoxy systems resulted in an autocatalytic kinetic mechanism accelerated by hydroxyl groups. Also, the conversion and cure activation energy of the DGEBA/BQH system were higher than those of DGEBA/BPH system. The mechanical properties of the DGEBA/BQH system were also superior to those of the DGEBA/BPH system, as well as the morphology. This was probably due to the consequence of the effect of the substituted benzene group of the BQH catalyst, resulting in increasing the crosslinking density and structural stability in the epoxy system studied. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The influence of addition of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO–PPO–PEO) copolymers on final morphologies of modified epoxy matrices has been investigated as a function of PEO:PPO molar ratio and cure conditions by comparison with the cured epoxy blends only containing poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) or poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) homopolymers. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used to characterize structural features of blends. Whilst diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA)/4,4’-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM)/PPO system macrophase separates, the interactions between PEO and cured epoxy are responsible for miscibility of DGEBA/DDM/PEO system. Depending on PEO:PPO molar ratio, micro- or macrophase separated morphologies have been obtained for block copolymer modified epoxy matrices. Moreover, the influence of both copolymer content and cure temperature on final morphologies has also been investigated by both experimental and theoretical analysis.

To investigate the effect of catalysts on the thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of an epoxy system, a resin based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol‐A (DGEBA) was cured by two cationic latent thermal catalysts, N‐benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH) and N‐benzylquinoxalinium hexafluoroantimonate (BQH). Differential scanning calorimetry was used for the thermal characterization of the epoxy systems. Near‐infrared spectroscopy was employed to examine the cure reaction between the DGEBA and the latent thermal catalysts used. The rheological properties of the blend systems were investigated under an isothermal condition with a rheometer. To characterize the mechanical properties of the systems, flexure, fracture toughness (KIC), and impact tests were performed. The phase morphology was studied with scanning electron microscopy of the fractured surfaces of mechanical test samples. The conversion and cure activation energy of the DGEBA/BQH system were higher than those of the DGEBA/BPH system. The crosslinking activation energy showed a result similar to that obtained from the cure kinetics of the blend systems. The flexure strength, KIC, and impact properties of the DGEBA/BQH system were also superior to those of the DGEBA/BPH system. This was a result of the substituted benzene group of the BQH catalyst, which increased the crosslink density and structural stability of the epoxy system studied. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The latent properties and cure behaviors of an epoxy blend system based on cycloaliphatic epoxy (CAE) and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy containing N‐benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH) as a thermal latent initiator were investigated with near‐infrared (N‐IR) spectroscopy. The assignments of the latent properties and cure kinetics were performed by the measurements of the N‐IR reflectance for epoxide and hydroxyl functional groups at different temperatures and compositions. As a result, this system showed more than one type of reaction, and BPH was an excellent thermal latent catalyst without any coinitiator. The cure behaviors were identified by the changes in the absorption intensity of the hydroxyl groups at 7100 cm−1 with different composition ratios. Moreover, characteristic N‐IR band assignments were used to evaluate the reactive kinetics and were shown to be an appropriate method for studying the cure behaviors of the CAE/DGEBA blend system containing a thermal latent catalyst. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Dynamic viscosity and ionic conductivity were measured simultaneously during the cure of a digylcidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy resin with diamino-diphenyl sulfone (DDS) by mounting a microdielectric sensor into the plates of a rheometer. Two different cure temperatures were examined. Periodically, throughout the cure, samples were removed from the plates of the rheometer, quenched, and analyzed for the glass transition temperature and epoxide conversion. The relationship between conductivity and viscosity appeared to be independent of cure temperature. A linear relation with a slope of ?1 was observed between the natural logarithms of conductivity and viscosity during the cure up to approximately 85% cure conversion. It was hypothesized that the reaction rate was hindered by diffusion at this stage in the polymerization. A free volume relationship was used to successfully correlate conductivity with viscosity up to the diffusion limited region.

The effect of the novel N‐crotyl‐N,N‐dimethyl‐4‐methylanilinium hexafluroantimonate (CMH) initiator on cure kinetics and rheological properties of diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy cationic system was investigated. From DSC measurements of the DGEBA/CMH system, it was found that this system exhibited excellent thermal latent characteristics at a given temperature and revealed complex cure behavior as indicated by multiple exotherms. The conversion and conversion rate of the DGEBA/CMH system increased with increasing the concentration of initiator, attributed to the high activity of CMH. Viscoelastic properties during gel formation of DGEBA initiated by CMH were investigated by rheological techniques under isothermal conditions. The gel time obtained from the modulus crossover point t(G′) = G″ was affected by a high curing temperature and the concentration of CMH, resulting in a high degree of network formation in cationic polymerization. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Epoxy resin adhesives are widely used because of their strength, versatility, and ability to bond a variety of substrates. Furfurylamines represent a potential, new class of epoxy curing agents. Furfuryl amine (FA), tetrahydrofurfuryl amine (THFA), and 5,5′-methylenebis-2-furanmethanamine (DFA) were studied as possible epoxy curing agents. The utility of FA and THFA are limited by their volatility at the temperatures needed to effect cure of diglycidyl-ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) based epoxy resins. DFA is a very effective epoxy curing agent with the ability to cure DGEBA at rates similar to that of standard epoxy curing agents such as liethylenetriamine.

Thermoplastic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) (Mw(PEO) approximately 4000) has been used to prepare thermosetting nanocomposites incorporating diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy oligomer. Blends with various PEO/DGEBA weight ratios were cured using stoichiometric portions of 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane. The resulting semi-interpenetrating polymer networks were studied by several techniques. Nanoscale confinement effects, thermal (glass transition, melting and crystallization temperatures) and structural features of our materials are similar to those for networks with much higher Mw(PEO) and different curing agents; however, the polyether crystallization onset occurs in our case at a lower PEO concentration; shorter PEO chains organize themselves more easily into crystalline domains. Very low estimates of the k parameter of the Gordon-Taylor equation, used to fit the compositional dependences of the dielectric and calorimetric glass transition temperatures, and a strong plasticization of the motion of the glyceryl segments (beta-relaxation) in the epoxy resin were observed. These illustrate an intensified weakening in the strength of the intermolecular interactions in the modified networks, as compared to the high strength of the self-association of hydroxyls in the neat resin. The significance of hydrogen-bonding interactions between the components for obtaining structurally homogeneous thermoset-i-thermoplastic networks is discussed.

The investigation of the cure kinetics of a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)/phenol‐novolac blend system with different phenolic contents initiated by a cationic latent thermal catalyst [N‐benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH)] was performed by means of the analysis of isothermal experiments using a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Latent properties were investigated by measuring the conversion as a function of curing temperature using a dynamic DSC method. The results indicated that the BPH in this system for cure is a significant thermal latent initiator and has good latent thermal properties. The cure reaction of the blend system using BPH as a curing agent was strongly dependent on the cure temperature and proceeded through an autocatalytic kinetic mechanism that was accelerated by the hydroxyl group produced through the reaction between DGEBA and BPH. At a specific conversion region, once vitrification took place, the cure reaction of the epoxy/phenol‐novolac/BPH blend system was controlled by a diffusion‐control cure reaction rather than by an autocatalytic reaction. The kinetic constants k1 and k2 and the cure activation energies E1 and E2 obtained by the Arrhenius temperature dependence equation of the epoxy/phenol‐novolac/BPH blend system were mainly discussed as increasing the content of the phenol‐novolac resin to the epoxy neat resin.

It has been experimentally shown that epoxide-terminated hyperbranched polyether sulphone (EHBPES) can significantly improve the mechanical properties of traditional diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A/triethylenetetramine (DGEBA/TETA) systems, but the origin of the improvement is still unclear. In this work,we used molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to gain a thorough understanding of the origin of modulus improvement for EHBPES/DGEBA/TETA systems. It is found that the modulus of EHBPES/DGEBA/TETA systems increases with the increase of EHBPES loading. In addition, the crosslinking density, cohesive energy density (CED),and free volume can be used to understand the modulus for EHBPES/DGEBA/TETA systems. It is shown that the highest modulus is achieved at 7 wt% EHBPES loading due to the highest crosslinking density and CED.When EHBPES loading is below 7 wt%,the higher CED and crosslinking density are responsible for the higher modulus. At higher loadings (> 7 wt%),the decreased modulus is closely related to the decreased crosslinking density and increased fractional free volume. It is expected that our results could be of great implications for designing high-performance epoxy materials.

The microstructure and fracture behavior of epoxy mixtures containing two monomers of different molecular weights were studied. The variation of the fracture toughness by the addition of other modifiers was also investigated. Several amounts of high‐molecular‐weight diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) oligomer were added to a nearly pure DGEBA monomer. The mixtures were cured with an aromatic amine, showing phase separation after curing. The curing behavior of the epoxy mixtures was investigated with thermal measurements. A significant enhancement of the fracture toughness was accompanied by slight increases in both the rigidity and strength of the mixtures that corresponded to the content of the high‐molecular‐weight epoxy resin. Dynamic mechanical and atomic force microscopy measurements indicated that the generated two‐phase morphology was a function of the content of the epoxy resin added. The influence of the addition of an oligomer or a thermoplastic on the morphologies and mechanical properties of both epoxy‐containing mixtures was also investigated. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel liquid crystalline epoxy resin based on the imine group was synthesised and structurally characterised by infrared (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The mesogenic behaviour of the monomer was measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarised optical microscopy (POM), and presented various textures in the extensive temperature range. Methyl nadic anhydride (MNA) was employed to cure the liquid crystalline epoxy resin and the curing process was investigated using POM and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). Information about distribution of liquid crystalline epoxy resin in the blending system resulted from the FT-IR Imaging System, indicating that molecules of liquid crystalline epoxy resin can agglomerate to form anisotropic domains. The improvement in mechanical properties of diglycidyl ether of biphenol A (DGEBA) modified with liquid crystalline epoxy was achieved. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) showed that an extremely rough and highly deformed fracture surface can be obtained. DGEBA modified with liquid crystalline epoxy resin was characterised by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) for its thermal properties. The results indicate that the presence of the liquid crystal phase influences glass transition temperature (Tg).

Terephthaloyl chloride was reacted with 4‐hydroxy benzoic acid to get terephthaloylbis(4‐oxybenzoic) acid, which was characterized and further reacted with epoxy resin [diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)] to get a liquid‐crystalline epoxy resin (LCEP). This LCEP was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and polarized optical microscopy (POM). LCEP was then blended in various compositions with DGEBA and cured with a room temperature curing hardener. The cured blends were characterized by DSC and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) for their thermal and viscoelastic properties. The cured blends exhibited higher storage moduli and lower glass‐transition temperatures (tan δmax, from DMA) as compared with that of the pure DGEBA network. The formation of a smectic liquid‐crystalline phase was observed by POM during the curing of LCEP and DGEBA/LCEP blends. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this report, a novel phosphorus/silicon‐containing reactive flame retardant, hexa(3‐triglycidyloxysilylpropyl)triphosphazene (HGPP), was synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra (1H, 31P, and 29Si), respectively. To prepare cured epoxy, HGPP had been co‐cured with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol‐A (DGEBA) via 4,4‐diaminodiphenylsulfone as a curing agent. The mechanical, thermal, and flame retardant properties of the cured epoxy were evaluated by dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and limiting oxygen index (LOI). According to these results, it could be found that incorporation of HGPP in the cured epoxy system showed good thermal stability, high LOI values, and high char yield at high temperature. As moderate loading of HGPP in the epoxy system, its storage modulus and glass transition temperature were higher than those of neat DGEBA.

This article presents a new type of epoxy‐toughening system, in which high‐Tg polyaryletherketone (PEK‐L) containing one carboxyl group per repeating unit was utilized to randomly copolymerize with epoxy resin (DGEBA) to form crosslinking network. Compared to the neat epoxy resin, the PEK‐L/DGEBA copolymers showed simultaneous enhancement in flexural strains at break by 282%, GIC value by 193%, and flexural strength by 14%. The reason was attributed to the uniform three‐dimensional copolymer network interweaved by PEK‐L and DGEBA segments through strong covalent bonds. The copolymerization process were monitored and examined by FTIR spectra. The effect of copolymer composition on the thermal and mechanical properties as well as toughening mechanism were also investigated and discussed in detail. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel epoxy nanocomposites based on a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy, an epoxy functionalized hyperbranched polymer (HTTE) and nano‐Al2O3 were synthesized with the aim of determining the effect of the nano‐Al2O3 particles and HTTE on the structure and properties of epoxy nanocomposites. The mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, bulk resistivity, and thermal stability of the nano‐Al2O3/HTTE/DGEBA ternary composites were evaluated and compared with the corresponding matrix. The improvement in impact properties of these nanocomposites was explained in terms of fracture surface analysis by SEM. The results indicate that the incorporation of nanoparticles and hyperbranched epoxy effectively improved the toughness of epoxy composites without sacrificing thermal conductivity and bulk resistivity compared to the neat epoxy and Al2O3/DGEBA, obtaining a well dispersion of nanoparticles in epoxy matrix and solving the drawbacks for single fillers filled epoxy nanocomposite. The miscibility of the blend, composed of a bisphenol A epoxy resins (Diglycidyl etherof bisphenol A) (DGEBA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and crosslinked by phthalicanhydride (PA) was studied using dynamic mechanical method. Single glass transitiontemperatures intermediate between the two pure components were observed for all blendlevels. The secondary relaxation mechanism should relate to not only diester linkage, butalso hydroxyether structural unit in the system. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) is applied to study the curing reaction and intermolecular specific interaction of thesystem. The results indicate the PEO participates the crosslinking reaction, accelerates thecuring reaction and make the reaction more perfect. The shifts of the hydroxyl band andcarbonyl band demonstrate the presence of the intermolecular interaction in the curedblend. Moreover, the molecular interaction between the side hydroxyl in the hydroxyetherunits and the ether bond in PEO macromolecules is stronger.
