The radical copolymerization of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) and 1‐bromo‐2,2‐difluoroethylene (BDFE) in 1,1,1,3,3‐pentafluorobutane solution at different monomer molar ratios (ranging from 96/4 to 25/75 mol %) and initiated by tert‐butylperoxypivalate (TBPPI, mainly) is presented. Poly(VDF‐co‐BDFE) copolymers of various aspects (from white powders to yellow viscous liquids) were produced depending on the copolymer compositions. The microstructures of the obtained copolymers were characterized by 19F and 1H NMR spectroscopy and by elementary analysis and these techniques enabled one to assess the contents of both comonomers in the produced copolymers. VDF was shown to be more incorporated in the copolymer than BDFE. From the extended Kelen and Tudos method, the kinetics of the radical copolymerization led to the determination of the reactivity ratios, ri, of both comonomers (rVDF = 1.20 ± 0.50 and rBDFE = 0.40 ± 0.15 at 75 °C) showing that VDF is more reactive than BDFE. Alfrey‐Price's Q and e values of BDFE monomer were calculated to be 0.009 (from QVDF = 0.008) or 0.019 (from QVDF = 0.015) and +1.22 (vs. eVDF = 0.40) or +1.37 (vs. eVDF = 0.50), respectively, indicating that BDFE is an electron‐accepting monomer. Statistic cooligomers were produced with molar masses ranging from 1,800 to 5,500 g/mol (assessed by GPC with polystyrene standards). A further evidence of the successful copolymerization was shown by the selective reduction of bromine atoms in poly(VDF‐co‐BDFE) cooligomers that led to analog PVDF. The thermal properties of the poly(VDF‐co‐BDFE) cooligomers were also determined and those containing a high VDF amount exhibited a high thermal stability. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graft copolymers comprising poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene) backbone and poly(styrene sulfonic acid) side chains, i.e. P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐PSSA were synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for composite nanofiltration (NF) membranes. Direct initiation of the secondary chlorinated site of CTFE units facilitates grafting of PSSA, as revealed by FT‐IR spectroscopy. The successful “grafting from” method and the microphase‐separated structure of the graft copolymer were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) also showed the decrease in the crystallinity of P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) upon graft copolymerization. Composite NF membranes were prepared from P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐PSSA as a top layer coated onto P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) ultrafiltration support membrane. Both the rejections and the flux of composite membranes increased with increasing PSSA concentration due to the increase in SO3H groups and membrane hydrophilicity, as supported by contact angle measurement. The rejections of NF membranes containing 47 wt% of PSSA were 83% for Na2SO4 and 28% for NaCl, and the solution flux were 18 and 32 L/m2 hr, respectively, at 0.3 MPa pressure. The radical copolymerization of chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) with 3,3,4,4‐tetrafluoro‐4‐bromobut‐1‐ene (BTFB) initiated by tert‐butylperoxypivalate is presented. The microstructures of the obtained copolymers are determined by means of NMR spectroscopies and elemental analysis and show that random copolymers were obtained. A wide range of poly(CTFE‐co‐BTFB) copolymers is synthesized, containing from 17 to 89 mol % of CTFE. In all the cases, CTFE is the less reactive of both comonomers. Td10% values, ranging from 163 up to 359 °C, are dependent on the BTFB content. These variations of thermal property are attributed to the increase in the number of C‐H and C‐Br bonds breakdown when the BTFB molar percentage in the copolymer is higher. Tg values range from 19 to 39 °C and a decreasing trend is observed when increasing the amount of BTFB in the copolymer. This observation arises from the higher flexibility of the copolymer when increasing the number of fluorobrominated lateral chains. These original fluoropolymers bearing reactive pendant bromo groups are suitable candidates for various applications. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A new stratagem for the synthesis of amphiphilic graft copolymers of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain and hydrophobic polystyrene as the side chains is suggested. A poly(ethylene oxide) with pending 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyls [poly(4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl‐co‐ethylene oxide)] was first prepared by the anionic ring‐opening copolymerization of ethylene oxide and 4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl, and then the graft copolymerization of styrene was completed with benzoyl peroxide as the initiator in the presence of poly(4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl‐co‐ethylene oxide). The polymerization of styrene was under control, and comblike, amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐g‐polystyrene was obtained. The copolymer and its intermediates were characterized with size exclusion chromatography, 1H NMR, and electron spin resonance in detail. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copolymerization of olefins (ethylene and propylene) and 5‐hexen‐1‐ol pretreated with alkylaluminum was performed using [dimethysilylbis(9‐fluorenyl)]zirconium dichloride/methylaluminoxane as the catalyst. The copolymerization required extra addition of alkylaluminum to prevent deactivation of the catalyst when 5‐hexen‐1‐ol was pretreated with trimethylaluminum, whereas the triisobutylaluminum‐treated system did not require any addition of alkylaluminum. The molecular weight of the copolymer depended on the kind of alkylaluminum compound (masking reagent, additive, and cocatalyst). 13C NMR analysis proved that poly(ethylene‐co‐5‐hexen‐1‐ol) containing 50 mol % of 5‐hexen‐1‐ol acted as an alternating copolymer, whereas the poly(propylene‐co‐5‐hexen‐1‐ol) acted as a random copolymer. The surface property of the copolymers was simply evaluated by means of water drop contact angle measurement. It was found that the copolymers containing large amounts of 5‐hexen‐1‐ol units showed good hydrophilic properties. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new graft copolymer, poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene) ‐graft‐poly(?‐caprolactone), was prepared by combination of reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) with coordination‐insertion ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). The copolymerization of styrene (St) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was carried out at 60 °C in the presence of 2‐phenylprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate (PPDTB) using AIBN as initiator. The molecular weight of poly (2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene) [poly(HEMA‐co‐St)] increased with the monomer conversion, and the molecular weight distribution was in the range of 1.09 ~ 1.39. The ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ?‐caprolactone was then initiated by the hydroxyl groups of the poly(HEMA‐co‐St) precursors in the presence of stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2). GPC and 1H‐NMR data demonstrated the polymerization courses are under control, and nearly all hydroxyl groups took part in the initiation. The efficiency of grafting was very high. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 5523–5529, 2004  相似文献

Radical copolymerizations of electron‐deficient 2‐trifluoromethylacrylic (TFMA) monomers and electron‐rich norbornene derivatives and vinyl ethers with azobisisobutyronitrile were investigated by analyzing the kinetics in situ with 1H NMR. Although none of the monomers underwent radical homopolymerization under normal conditions, they copolymerized readily, producing a copolymer containing 60–70 mol % TFMA. Terpolymerization involving these monomers was also investigated. The rates of copolymerization and kinetic chain lengths were determined in some cases on the basis of the in situ kinetics analysis. These radial copolymerizations of TFMA provide a basis for the preparation of chemical‐amplification resist polymers for emerging 157‐nm lithography. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of amphiphilic graft copolymers of poly (vinylidene fluoride‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene)‐g‐poly(2‐vinyl pyridine), P (VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐P2VP, with different degrees of P2VP grafting (from 26.3 to 45.6 wt%) was synthesized via one‐pot atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The amphiphilic properties of P (VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐P2VP graft copolymers allowed itself to self‐assemble into nanoscale structures. P (VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐P2VP graft copolymers were introduced into neat P (VDF‐co‐CTFE) as additives to form blending membranes. When two different solvents, N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) and dimethylformamide (DMF), were used, specific organized crystalline structures were observed only in the NMP systems. P (VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐P2VP played a pivotal role in controlling the morphology and pore structure of membranes. The water flux of the membranes increased from 57.2 to 310.1 L m?2 h?1 bar?1 with an increase in the PVDF‐co‐CTFE‐g‐P2VP loading (from 0 to 30 wt%) due to increased porosity and hydrophilicity. The flux recovery ratio (FRR) increased from 67.03% to 87.18%, and the irreversible fouling (Rir) decreased from 32.97% to 12.82%. Moreover, the pure gas permeance of the membranes with respect to N2 was as high as 6.2 × 104 GPU (1 GPU = 10–6 cm3[STP]/[s cm2 cmHg]), indicating their possible use as a porous polymer support for gas separation applications.  相似文献

1H,1H,2H,2H‐Perfluorooctyloxymethylstyrene (FS) was prepared and copolymerized with chloromethylstyrene (CMS). Conventional radical copolymerization of both these aromatic monomers led to poly(CMS‐co‐FS) random copolymers for which CMS was shown to be more reactive than the fluorinated comonomer. Their controlled radical copolymerization based on degenerative transfer, namely iodine transfer polymerization (ITP), led to various poly(CMS)‐b‐poly(FS) block copolymers. Molecular weights of poly(CMS‐co‐FS) copolymers reached 33,000 g mol?1 while those of poly(CMS)‐b‐ poly(FS) block copolymers were 22,000 g mol?1. Their composition ranged from 18 to 61 mol.% in FS. These copolymers were modified via a cationization step, aiming at replacing the chlorine atom in CMS unit by a trimethylammonium group, leading to the formation of cationic sites. The resulting functionalized copolymers exhibited different solubilities. If both copolymerization techniques led to water‐insoluble copolymers, the block architecture enabled incorporating lower FS proportion, resulting in more cationic sites. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene)‐graft‐poly(oxyethylene methacrylate), P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐POEM, an amphiphilic comb copolymer with hydrophobic P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) backbone and hydrophilic POEM side chains at 73:27 wt % was synthesized. The POEM side chains were grafted from the P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) mainchain backbone via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using direct initiation of the chlorine atoms in CTFE units. Synthesis of microphase‐separated P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐POEM comb copolymer was successful, as confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), FTIR spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Nanocomposite films were prepared using the comb copolymer as a template film and the in situ reduction of AgCF3SO3 precursor to silver nanoparticles under UV irradiation. Silver nanoparticles with 4–8 nm in average size were in situ created in the solid state template film, as revealed by TEM, UV–visible spectroscopy, and wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) presented the selective incorporation and the in situ growth of silver nanoparticles within the hydrophilic POEM domains of microphase‐separated comb copolymer film. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Radical copolymerizations of electron‐deficient 2‐trifluoromethylacrylic (TFMA) monomers, such as 2‐trifluoromethylacrylic acid and t‐butyl 2‐trifluoromethylacrylate (TBTFMA), with electron‐rich norbornene derivatives and vinyl ethers with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator were investigated in detail through the analysis of the kinetics in situ with 1H NMR and through the determination of the monomer reactivity ratios. The norbornene derivatives used in this study included bicyclo[2.2.1]hept‐2‐ene (norbornene) and 5‐(2‐trifluoromethyl‐1,1,1‐trifluoro‐2‐hydroxylpropyl)‐2‐norbornene. The vinyl ether monomers were ethyl vinyl ether, t‐butyl vinyl ether, and 3,4‐dihydro‐2‐H‐pyran. Vinylene carbonate was found to copolymerize with TBTFMA. Although none of the monomers underwent radical homopolymerization under normal conditions, they copolymerized readily, producing a copolymer containing 60–70 mol % TFMA. The copolymerization of the TFMA monomer with norbornenes and vinyl ethers deviated from the terminal model and could be described by the penultimate model. The copolymers of TFMA reported in this article were evaluated as chemical amplification resist polymers for the emerging field of 157‐nm lithography. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(butadiene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (NBR) nanoparticles were synthesized in a semibatch emulsion polymerization system using Gemini surfactant trimethylene‐1,3‐bis (dodecyldimethylammonium bromide), referred to as Gemini‐type surfactant (GS) 12‐3‐12, as the emulsifier. In this polymerization system, an enhanced decomposition rate of initiator ammonium persulfate was achieved even under the low temperature of 50 °C which is attributed to the acidic initiation environment provided using GS 12‐3‐12. The microstructure and copolymer composition of the polymer nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier‐transformed infrared and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The effects of the surfactant concentration on the particle size, zeta potential, polymerization conversion, copolymer composition, molecular weight, and glass transition temperature (Tg) were investigated. It was found that the particle diameter can be controlled by the surfactant concentration and monomer/water ratio and particle sizes below 20 nm can be reached. The obtained latex particles exhibit a spherical morphology. A kinetic study of the copolymerization reaction was carried out, which indicated that an azeotropic composition was produced. The synthesized fine NBR nanoparticles can be employed as the nano substrate for a subsequent hydrogenation process so as to overcome the challenge involved in the field of latex hydrogenation of polymers, which can be found in a related report: Organic Solvent‐Free Catalytic Hydrogenation of Diene‐based Polymer Nanoparticles in Latex Form: Part II. Preparation and study of a series of copolymers incorporating 2‐vinyl‐4,4‐dimethylazlactone (VDMA) is reported. The reactivity ratios for photo‐initiated free radical copolymerization of VDMA with methacrylic acid (MAA), acrylic acid (AA), acrylamide (AAm), dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (MPEG300MA), and 2‐methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC), were determined by fitting comonomer conversion data obtained by in situ 1H NMR to a terminal copolymerization equation. Semi‐batch photo‐copolymerizations were then used to synthesize the corresponding VDMA copolymers with constant composition. Their solubility and dissolution behavior, as well as their hydrolysis half‐lives under physiological conditions, were determined. P(VDMA‐co‐MAA) copolymers with 52 to 93 mol % VDMA showed decreasing initial solubility and increasing hydrolysis half‐lives with increasing VDMA content. VDMA copolymers with nonionic monomers AAm and DMAA were water soluble only at VDMA contents of 41 and 22 mol % or less, respectively, and showed longer hydrolysis half‐lives than comparable MAA copolymers. VDMA copolymers with HEMA and MPEG300MA were found to crosslink during storage, so their hydrolysis half‐lives were not determined. VDMA copolymers with 18% zwitterionic MPC showed a much longer half‐life and superior initial solubility compared to analogous p(VDMA‐co‐MAA), identifying this copolymer as a promising candidate for macromolecular crosslinkers in, for example, aqueous layer‐by‐layer co‐depositions with polyamines. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐trifluoroethylene‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF‐co‐TrFE‐co‐CTFE)) with internal double bond has been reported with high dielectric constant and energy density at room temperature, which is expected to serve as a promising dielectric film in high pulse discharge capacitors. An environmentally friendly one‐pot route, including the controllable hydrogenation via Cu(0) mediated single electron transfer radical chain transfer reaction (SET‐CTR) and dehydrochlorination catalyzed with N‐containing reagent, is successfully developed to synthesize P(VDF‐co‐TrFE‐co‐CTFE) containing unsaturation. The resultant polymer was carefully characterized with 1H NMR, 19F NMR, and FTIR. The composition of the resultant copolymer is strongly influenced by reaction conditions, including the reaction temperature, catalyst concentration, the types of ligands and solvents. The kinetics data of the chain transfer and elimination reaction demonstrate their well‐controlled feature of the strategy. By shifting the equilibrium between the CTR and elimination reactions dominated by N‐compounds serving as ligands in SET‐CTR and catalyst in the dehydrochlorination of P(VDF‐co‐CTFE), P(VDF‐co‐TrFE‐co‐CTFE) with tunable TrFE and double‐bond content could be synthesized in this one‐pot route. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For the first time, poly(ε‐caprolactone) and poly(ε‐caprolactone‐co‐ε‐caprolactam) nanoparticles were successfully obtained by anionic polymerization of ε‐caprolactone and anionic copolymerization of ε‐caprolactone with ε‐caprolactam, respectively, in heterophase by the miniemulsion technique. After polymerization the resulting dispersions are stable for hours in case of the pure polyester and days for the copolymer. The syntheses were carried out with different continuous phases, amounts of surfactant, initiator, and monomers. The influence of the reaction parameters on the molecular weight of the polymers and on colloidal characteristics like size and morphology of the nanoparticles were studied by dynamic light scattering, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Vinyl‐type copolymerization of norbornene (NBE) and 5‐NBE‐2‐yl‐acetate (NBE‐OCOMe) in toluene were investigated using a novel homogeneous catalyst system based on bis(β‐ketonaphthylamino)Ni(II)/B(C6F5)3/AlEt3. The copolymerization behavior as well as the copolymerization conditions, such as the levels of B(C6F5)3 and AlEt3, temperature, and monomer feed ratios, which influence on the copolymerization were examined. Without combination of AlEt3, the catalytic bis(β‐ketonaphthylamino)Ni(II)/B(C6F5)3 exhibited very high catalyst activity for polymerization of NBE. Combination of AlEt3 in catalyst system resulted in low conversion for polymerization of NBE. For copolymerization of NBE and NBE‐OCOMe, involvement of AlEt3 in catalyst is necessary. Slight addition of NBE‐OCOMe in copolymerization of NBE and NBE‐OCOMe gives rise to significant increase of catalyst activity for catalytic system bis(β‐ketonaphthylamino)Ni(II)/B(C6F5)3/AlEt3. Nevertheless, excess increase of the NBE‐OCOMe content in the comonomer feed ratios results in decrease of conversion as well as activity of catalyst. The achieved copolymers were confirmed to be vinyl‐addition copolymers through the analysis of FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectra. 13C NMR studies further revealed the composition of the copolymer and the incorporation rate was 7.6–54.1 mol % ester units at a content of 30–90 mol % of the NBE‐OCOMe in the monomer feeds ratios. TGA analysis results showed that the copolymer exhibited good thermal stability (Td > 410 °C) and failed to observe the glass transitions temperature over 300 °C. The copolymers are confirmed to be noncrystalline by WAXD analysis results and show good solubility in common organic solvents. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copolymers of 2‐methylene‐1,3‐dioxepane (MDO) and methyl acrylate (MA) containing ester units both in the backbone and as pendant groups were synthesized by free‐radical copolymerization. The influence of reaction conditions such as the polymerization time, temperature, initiator concentration, and comonomer feed ratio on the yield, molecular weight, and copolymer composition was investigated. The structure of the copolymers was confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and IR spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated that the copolymers had a random structure. An NMR study showed that hydrogen transfer occurred during the copolymerization. The reactivity ratios of the comonomers were rMDO = 0.0235 and rMA = 26.535. The enzymatic degradation of the copolymers obtained was carried out in the presence of proteinase K or a crude enzyme extracted from earthworms. The experimental results showed that the higher ester molar percentage in the backbone caused a faster degradation rate. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A well‐defined amphiphilic copolymer brush with poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain and polystyrene as the side chain was successfully prepared by a combination of anionic polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The glycidol was first protected by ethyl vinyl ether to form 2,3‐epoxypropyl‐1‐ethoxyethyl ether and then copolymerized with ethylene oxide by the initiation of a mixture of diphenylmethylpotassium and triethylene glycol to give the well‐defined polymer poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐2,3‐epoxypropyl‐1‐ethoxyethyl ether); the latter was hydrolyzed under acidic conditions, and then the recovered copolymer of ethylene oxide and glycidol {poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐glycidol) [poly(EO‐co‐Gly)]} with multiple pending hydroxymethyl groups was esterified with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to produce the macro‐ATRP initiator [poly(EO‐co‐Gly)(ATRP). The latter was used to initiate the polymerization of styrene to form the amphiphilic copolymer brushes. The object products and intermediates were characterized with 1H NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared, and size exclusion chromatography in detail. In all cases, the molecular weight distribution of the copolymer brushes was rather narrow (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.2), and the linear dependence of ln[M0]/[M] (where [M0] is the initial monomer concentration and [M] is the monomer concentration at a certain time) on time demonstrated that the styrene polymerization was well controlled. This method has universal significance for the preparation of copolymer brushes with hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A well‐defined amphiphilic copolymer of ‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) linked with comb‐shaped [poly(styrene‐co‐2‐hydeoxyethyl methacrylate)‐graft‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)] (PEO‐b‐P(St‐co‐HEMA)‐g‐PCL) was successfully synthesized by combination of reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) with ring‐opening anionic polymerization and coordination–insertion ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). The α‐methoxy poly(ethylene oxide) (mPEO) with ω,3‐benzylsulfanylthiocarbonylsufanylpropionic acid (BSPA) end group (mPEO‐BSPA) was prepared by the reaction of mPEO with 3‐benzylsulfanylthiocarbonylsufanyl propionic acid chloride (BSPAC), and the reaction efficiency was close to 100%; then the mPEO‐BSPA was used as a macro‐RAFT agent for the copolymerization of styrene (St) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) using 2,2‐azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The molecular weight of copolymer PEO‐b‐P(St‐co‐HEMA) increased with the monomer conversion, but the molecular weight distribution was a little wide. The influence of molecular weight of macro‐RAFT agent on the polymerization procedure was discussed. The ROP of ε‐caprolactone was then completed by initiation of hydroxyl groups of the PEO‐b‐P(St‐co‐HEMA) precursors in the presence of stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2). Thus, the amphiphilic copolymer of linear PEO linked with comb‐like P(St‐co‐HEMA)‐g‐PCL was obtained. The controlled nitroxide‐mediated homopolymerization of 9‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐9H‐carbazole (VBK) and the copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with varying amounts of VBK were accomplished by using 10 mol % {tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino} nitroxide relative to 2‐({tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino}oxy)‐2‐methylpropionic acid (BlocBuilder?) in dimethylformamide at temperatures from 80 to 125 °C. As little as 1 mol % of VBK in the feed was required to obtain a controlled copolymerization of an MMA/VBK mixture, resulting in a linear increase in molecular weight versus conversion with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw /Mn ≈ 1.3). Preferential incorporation of VBK into the copolymer was indicated by the MMA/VBK reactivity ratios determined: rVBK = 2.7 ± 1.5 and rMMA = 0.24 ± 0.14. The copolymers were found significantly “living” by performing subsequent chain extensions with a fresh batch of VBK and by 31P NMR spectroscopy analysis. VBK was found to be an effective controlling comonomer for NMP of MMA, and such low levels of VBK comonomer ensured transparency in the final copolymer. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
