Epitaxial TiC/SiC multilayers were grown by magnetron sputtering at a substrate temperature of 550 °C, where SiC is normally amorphous. The epitaxial TiC template induced growth of cubic SiC up to a thickness of ~2 nm. Thicker SiC layers result in a direct transition to growth of the metastable amorphous SiC followed by renucleation of nanocrystalline TiC layers.

Angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and X‐ray photoemission spectroscopy have been used to characterise epitaxially ordered graphene grown on copper foil by low‐pressure chemical vapour deposition. A short vacuum anneal to 200 °C allows observation of ordered low energy electron diffraction patterns. High quality Dirac cones are measured in ARPES with the Dirac point at the Fermi level (undoped graphene). Annealing above 300 °C produces n‐type doping in the graphene with up to 350 meV shift in Fermi level, and opens a band gap of around 100 meV.

We have shown that nitrophenyl groups may be added to the surface of few‐layer epitaxial graphene (EG) by the formation of covalent carbon–carbon bonds thereby changing the electronic structure and transport properties of EG from near‐metallic to semiconducting. In the present Letter we discuss the opportunities afforded by such chemical processes to engineer device functionality in graphene by modification of the electronic properties without physical patterning.

We report on wet etching of photomodified regions in crystalline sapphire using KOH solution. Tightly focused femtosecond laser pulses (150 fs at 800 nm wavelength) were used to create void structures enclosed in an amorphised sapphire shell inside the bulk of a crystalline host. The diameter of the amorphous regions can be controlled by pulse energy and was typically 0.5–1.5 µm. The etching rate depends on the distance between adjacent irradiation spots, pulse energy, concentration of etchant and ultrasonic agitation.

In this Letter we demonstrate that hydrogen‐terminated porous silicon (PSi) layers and powders can serve as highly efficient reductive templates for noble metal salts. The reduction results in metal nanoparticle (NP) formation in the pores of PSi. Gold NP formation has been monitored in‐situ by measuring the plasmon resonance response. Pt NPs, formed in the PSi matrix, were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and energy‐dispersive X‐ray analysis. Furthermore, hybrid Pt/PSi nanocomposites exhibit a high catalytic activity for CO oxidation.

A facile metal catalyst free route to synthesize boron doped (0.6%–1.0%) carbon nanotubes via ceramic nanowires in which the formation of the nanowires (probably serving as templates), the carbon nanotubes and their doping all occur unanimously in the reaction, is presented.

Osmium diboride has been known for some time as a low compressibility material and a superhard material. It is suitable for hard coating applications. It is also a superconductor below 2.1 K. Using first‐principles calculations, the author investigated the geometry of its Fermi surface (FS) and calculated the related physical quantities. The theoretical results are used to predict the frequencies of the Shubnikov–de Haas quantum oscillations. Comparison with recent measurements of the magneto‐resistance oscillations in osmium diboride is made.

We study graphene growth on hafnia (HfO2) nanoparticles by chemical vapour deposition using optical microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. We find that monoclinic HfO2 nanoparticles neither reduce to a metal nor form a carbide while nucleating nanometer domain‐sized few layer graphene. Hence we regard this as an interesting non‐metallic catalyst model system with the potential to explore graphene growth directly on a (high‐k) dielectric.

The Fe3O4(111)/graphene/Ni(111) trilayer is proposed to be used as an ideal spin‐filtering sandwich where the half‐metallic properties of magnetite are used. Thin magnetite layers on graphene/Ni(111) were prepared via successive oxidation of a thin iron layer predeposited on graphene/Ni(111) and the formed system was investigated by means of low‐energy electron diffraction and photoelectron spectroscopy. The electronic structure and structural quality of the graphene film sandwiched between two ferromagnetic layers remain unchanged upon magnetite formation as confirmed by experimental data.

We demonstrate the monolithic integration of a microstructured organic photodiode with a planar optical stripe waveguide. The manufacturing of this waveguide‐integrated organic photodiode is based on an UV photolithography process. The integration of photodiodes with optical waveguides represents an essential building block in the field of optoelectronic‐photonic integrated circuits.

We report a very simple and novel approach to produce anodic TiO2 nanotube arrays with highly defined and ordered tube openings. It is based on carrying out anodization through a slowly soluble photoresist coating. This eliminates the formation of undesired initiation layers on the tube tops and protects them to a certain extent from etching by the electrolyte.

The multiferroic Pb(Fe1/2V1/2)O3 (PFV) bulk ceramic was fabricated by a conventional ceramic sintering method. The strong visible‐light photovoltaic effect in Sn‐doped‐In2O3(ITO)/PFV/ITO structure capacitor was observed. The open‐circuit voltage was up to ~0.7 V, which was much higher than the value (~0.3 V) in BiFeO3 film. The photo‐excited electric current is almost proportional to the incident light illumination intensity. The good visible‐light photovoltaic makes PFV ceramic a potential candidate for practical application in solar cell devices.

By performing density functional theory calculations, we studied the quantum confinement in charged graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which is found to be clearly edge and shape dependent. It is found that the excess charges have a large distribution at the edges of the GQD. The resulting energy spectrum shift is very nonuniform and hence the Coulomb diamonds in the charge stability diagram vary irregularly, in good agreement with the observed nonperiodic Coulomb blockade oscillation. We also illustrate that the level statistics of the GQDs can be described by a Gaussian distribution, as predicted for chaotic Dirac billiards.

Optically transparent and high‐quality hybrid ZnO nanoparticle and anthracene embedded polyphenylsiloxane (PPS) glass films were spin‐coated on quartz substrates. A strong Förster resonant energy transfer (FRET) process was indicated by the observation of quenching of the ZnO emission and an enhancement of the anthracene emission at room temperature. The efficiency of this energy transfer between ZnO and the S1 vibronic states of the anthracene molecules can be optimized to exceed 90%.

We report the maskless fabrication of ultrathin suspended GaN membranes designed by focused ion beam treatment of the GaN epilayer surface with subsequent photoelectrochemical etching. This technological approach allows the fabrication of ultrathin membranes, as well as supporting micro/nanocolumns in a controlled fashion. The analysis of the spatial and spectral distribution of microcathodoluminescence demonstrates that the membranes exhibit mainly yellow luminescence. These results pave the way for the fabrication of ultrathin suspended GaN membranes for MEMS/NEMS applications.

Dip‐coating of a colloidal suspension is investigated in situ with microbeam grazing incidence small‐angle X‐ray scattering. We focus on the real‐time monitoring of a vertical dip‐coating process yielding insights into structural changes during pattern formation of the thin film. With the selected configuration a fixed spot on the sample surface is probed and the structural information at the time the contact line passes this spot is obtained, hence revealing the structure at the vicinity of the flowing meniscus owing to the microfocused beam. After dip‐coating the morphology is analyzed with atomic force microscopy, yielding real space information about the arrangement of individual nanoparticles at the film surface.

A high‐stability Eu complex has been achieved by coating with a silica glass via a low temperature sol–gel process using deuterated methanol. A three‐dimensional glass network protects the Eu complex from free oxygen and/or water to change the ligand structure. In addition, the chemical bond of the deuterated Eu complex is more stable than that of the conventional Eu complex. Therefore, we achieved a high‐thermal‐stability Eu complex encapsulated by a sol–gel derived silica glass using deuterated methanol instead of ethanol.

A concept is presented that uses epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide (SiC) for digital circuits. It uses graphene as a metal and the underlying substrate SiC as semiconductor. On the base of transistors with excellent switching behavior, Inverter and NAND operation is demonstrated.

By means of first‐principles calculations we predict the stability of silicene as buckled honeycomb lattice on passivated substrates of group‐IV(111)1 × 1 surfaces. The weak van‐der‐Waals interaction between silicene and substrates does not destroy its linear bands forming Dirac cones at the Brillouin zone corners. Only very small fundamental gaps are opened around the Fermi level.

A resonance splitting effect is investigated in a system composed of two cavities coupled by two unidirectional waveguides. Both theoretical analysis and numerical calculations demonstrate that the resonance splitting (indicating a coupling between the cavities) is independent of the phase shift between the cavities, which is in contrast to previous research where reciprocal waveguides are used. Moreover, this splitting can be tunable by an external magnetic field. Our findings offer a possibility to realize effective coupling between remote on‐chip resonators, which is highly demanded in the next‐generation photonic circuits.
