Using the canonical JSJ splitting, we describe the outer automorphism group Out( G) of a one-ended word hyperbolic group G. In particular, we discuss to what extent Out( G) is virtually a direct product of mapping class groups and a free abelian group, and we determine for which groups Out( G) is infinite. We also show that there are only finitely many conjugacy classes of torsion elements in Out( G), for G any torsion-free hyperbolic group. More generally, let Γ be a finite graph of groups decomposition of an arbitrary group G such that edge groups Ge are rigid (i.e. Out( Ge) is finite). We describe the group of automorphisms of G preserving Γ, by comparing it to direct products of suitably defined mapping class groups of vertex groups. 相似文献

A perfect colouring Φ of a simple undirected connected graph G is an edge colouring such that each vertex is incident with exactly one edge of each colour. This paper concerns the problem of representing groups by graphs with perfect colourings. We define groups of graph automorphisms, which preserve the structure of the colouring, and characterize these groups up to isomorphism. Our considerations are based on the fact that every perfectly coloured graph is isomorphic to a Schreier coset graph on a group generated by involutions. 相似文献

We estimate the nilpotence length of a solvable finite group
in terms of subgraphs of its Hawkes graph.
Given an integer
\( n>1 \),
we find conditions for reconstructing
the Hawkes graph of a finite group \( G \)
from the Hawkes graphs of its \( n \) pairwise nonconjugate maximal subgroups.
Using these results,
we obtain some new tests for the membership of a solvable finite group

Let G be a finite nonabelian simple group and let be a connectedundirected Cayley graph for G. The possible structures for thefull automorphism group Aut are specified. Then, for certainfinite simple groups G, a sufficient condition is given underwhich G is a normal subgroup of Aut. Finally, as an applicationof these results, several new half-transitive graphs are constructed.Some of these involve the sporadic simple groups G = J 1, J 4,Ly and BM, while others fall into two infinite families andinvolve the Ree simple groups and alternating groups. It has been an open question for a long time whether every countable group can be realized as a fundamental group of a compact metric space. Such realizations are not hard to obtain for compact or metric spaces but the combination of both properties turn out to be quite restrictive for the fundamental group. The problem has been studied by many topologists (including Cannon and Conner) but the solution has not been found. In this paper we prove that any countable group can be realized as the fundamental group of a compact subspace of ${\mathbb{R}^4}$ . According to the theorem of Shelah [ 10] such space can not be locally path connected if the group is not finitely generated. The theorem is proved by an explicit construction of an appropriate space X G for every countable group G. 相似文献

The topic of this paper is representing groups by edge-coloured graphs. Every edge-coloured graph determines a group of graph automorphisms which preserve the colours of the edges. An edge colouring of a graph G is called a perfect one iff every colour class is a perfect matching in G. We study closed topological 2 n-dimensional manifolds M with poly-surface fundamental groups. We prove that if M is simple homotopy equivalent to the total space E of a Y-bundle over a closed aspherical surface, where Y is a closed aspherical n-manifold, then M is s-cobordant to E. This extends a well-known 4-dimensional result of Hillman in [14] to higher dimensions. Our proof is different from that
of the quoted paper: we use Mayer-Vietoris techniques and the properties of the
