Theta line bundles and the determinant of the Hodge bundle

We give an expression of the determinant of the push forward of a symmetric line bundle on a complex abelian fibration, in terms of the pull back of the relative dualizing sheaf via the zero section.

     

On the varieties parametrizing rational space curves with fixed normal bundle

On the one hand this note complements the results obtained in [2] for rational curves, and, on the other hand, it introduces the study of the normal bundle of a curve of arbitrary genus in IP³ (the projective space over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0).The most important result concerns rational curve; we give the dimension of the variety parametrizing rational curve of fixed degree and fixed normal bundle, and we show they are quasi-projective, integral and Cohen-Macaulay.This work was carried out while the author held a CNR research fellowship at the Institute of Mathematics, University of Oslo     

The log-term of the Bergman kernel of the disc bundle over a homogeneous Hodge manifold

We show the vanishing of the log-term in the Fefferman expansion of the Bergman kernel of the disk bundle over a compact simply-connected homogeneous Kähler–Einstein manifold of classical type. Our results extends that in (Engli? and Zhang, Math Z 264(4):901–912, 2010) for the case of Hermitian symmetric spaces of compact type.     

Stratification of the Hilbert scheme of space curves with a stable normal bundle

Ford≥3g and 1≤s≤[g/2], we study the strataN _{d, g(s)} of degreed genusg spaces curvesC whose normal bundleN _C is stable with stability degree (integer of Lange-Narasimhan) σ(N _C)=2s. We prove thatN _{d, g(s)} has an irreducible component of the right dimension whose general curve has a normal bundle with the right number of maximal subbundles. We consider also the semi-stable case (s=0), obtaining similar results. We prove our results by studying the normal bundles of reducible curves and their deformations. Both authors were partially supported by MIUR and GNSAGA of INdAM (Italy).     

Families of space curves with large cohomology

We investigate space curves with large cohomology. To this end we introduce curves of subextremal type. This class includes all subextremal curves. Based on geometric and numerical characterizations of curves of subextremal type, we show that, if the cohomology is “not too small,” then they can be parameterized by the union of two generically smooth irreducible families; one of them corresponds to the subextremal curves. For curves of negative genus, the general curve of each of these families is also a smooth point of the support of an irreducible component of the Hilbert scheme. The two components have the same (large) dimension and meet in a subscheme of codimension one.     

On the normal bundle of curves on nodal quartic surfaces

Let k be an algebraically closed field, char k = 0. Let C be an irreducible nonsingular curve such that 2C = S ? F, where S and F are two surfaces and all the singularities of F are rational double points (if any). We prove that C can never pass through rational singularities of types A _2n n∈N, E₆ and E₈. We give conditions for C to pass through rational singularities of types. A _2k+1 k∈Z⁺ D_n n≥4 and E₇, (0.8).     

Semistability and Restrictions of tangent bundle to curves

We consider all complex projective manifolds X that satisfy at least one of the following three conditions:

1. (1)
   There exists a pair \({(C\,,\varphi)}\) , where C is a compact connected Riemann surface and

   $\varphi\,:\, C\,\longrightarrow\, X$

   a holomorphic map, such that the pull back \({\varphi^* {\it TX}}\) is not semistable.
    
2. (2)
   The variety X admits an étale covering by an abelian variety.
    
3. (3)
   The dimension dim X ≤ 1.
    

We prove that the following classes are among those that are of the above type.

• All X with a finite fundamental group.
• All X such that there is a nonconstant morphism from \({{\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^1}\) to X.
• All X such that the canonical line bundle K _X is either positive or negative or \({c_1(K_X)\,\in\,H^2(X,\, {\mathbb Q})}\) vanishes.
• All X with \({{\rm dim}_{\mathbb C} X\, =\,2}\).

     

Restriction of the cotangent bundle to elliptic curves and Hilbert-Kunz functions

We describe the possible restrictions of the cotangent bundle to an elliptic curve . We apply this in positive characteristic to the computation of the Hilbert-Kunz function of a homogeneous R₊-primary ideal in the graded section ring .     

On asymptotics of large Haar distributed unitary matrices

Let U _n be an n × n Haar unitary matrix. In this paper, the asymptotic normality and independence of Tr U _n , Tr U _n ² ,..., Tr U _n ^k are shown by using elementary methods. More generally, it is shown that the renormalized truncated Haar unitaries converge to a Gaussian random matrix in distribution. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Stability of line bundle transforms on curves with respect to low codimensional subspaces

We show the stability of certain syzygies of line bundles oncurves, which we call line bundle transforms. Furthermore, weprove the existence of reducible theta divisors for the transformshaving integral slope. A line bundle transform is the kernelof the evaluation map on a subspace of the space of global sections.     

Hodge polynomials and birational types of moduli spaces of coherent systems on elliptic curves

In this paper we consider moduli spaces of coherent systems on an elliptic curve. We compute their Hodge polynomials and determine their birational types in some cases. Moreover we prove that certain moduli spaces of coherent systems are isomorphic. This last result uses the Fourier-Mukai transform of coherent systems introduced by Hernández Ruipérez and Tejero Prieto.
