Recent work shows that coating a supported palladium catalyst with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of alkanethiols can dramatically improve selectivity in the hydrogenation of 1-epoxy-3-butene (EpB) to 1-epoxybutane. Here, we present the results of surface-level investigations of the adsorption of EpB and related molecules on SAM-coated Pd(111), with an aim of identifying mechanistic explanations for the observed catalytic behavior. Alkanethiol SAM-covered Pd(111) surfaces were prepared by conventional techniques and transferred to ultrahigh vacuum, where they were characterized using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) of EpB and other probe molecules. Whereas previous studies have shown that EpB undergoes rapid decomposition via epoxide ring opening on uncoated Pd(111), TPD studies show that EpB does not undergo substantial ring opening on SAM-covered surfaces but rather desorbs intact at temperatures less than 300 K. Systematic comparisons of EpB desorption spectra to spectra for other C(4) oxygenates suggest that the SAM creates a kinetic barrier to epoxide ring-opening reactions that does not exist on the uncoated surface. The EpB desorption spectra as a function of exposure show behavior similar to the desorption of olefins from Pd(111), indicating that the binding of the olefin functionality, in contrast to that of the epoxide ring, is not significantly perturbed. EpB desorption spectra from surfaces with less well-ordered SAMs show the presence of weakly bound states not observed on well-ordered SAM surfaces. The lower activity observed on catalysts covered with less well-ordered SAMs is hypothesized to occur due to partial confinement of adsorbates into these weakly bound, less active states.  相似文献

Adsorption and decomposition of cyclohexanone (C(6)H(10)O) on Pt(111) and on two ordered Pt-Sn surface alloys, (2 × 2)-Sn/Pt(111) and (√3 × √3)R30°-Sn/Pt(111), formed by vapor deposition of Sn on the Pt(111) single crystal surface were studied with TPD, HREELS, AES, LEED, and DFT calculations with vibrational analyses. Saturation coverage of C(6)H(10)O was found to be 0.25 ML, independent of the Sn surface concentration. The Pt(111) surface was reactive toward cyclohexanone, with the adsorption in the monolayer being about 70% irreversible. C(6)H(10)O decomposed to yield CO, H(2)O, H(2), and CH(4). Some C-O bond breaking occurred, yielding H(2)O and leaving some carbon on the surface after TPD. HREELS data showed that cyclohexanone decomposition in the monolayer began by 200 K. Intermediates from cyclohexanone decomposition were also relatively unstable on Pt(111), since coadsorbed CO and H were formed below 250 K. Surface Sn allowed for some cyclohexanone to adsorb reversibly. C(6)H(10)O dissociated on the (2 × 2) surface to form CO and H(2)O at low coverages, and methane and H(2) in smaller amounts than on Pt(111). Adsorption of cyclohexanone on (√3 × √3)R30°-Sn/Pt(111) at 90 K was mostly reversible. DFT calculations suggest that C(6)H(10)O adsorbs on Pt(111) in two configurations: by bonding weakly through oxygen to an atop Pt site and more strongly through simultaneously oxygen and carbon of the carbonyl to a bridged Pt-Pt site. In contrast, on alloy surfaces, C(6)H(10)O bonds preferentially to Sn. The presence of Sn, furthermore, is predicted to make the formation of the strongly bound C(6)H(10)O species bonding through O and C, which is a likely decomposition precursor, thermodynamically unfavorable. Alloying with Sn, thus, is shown to moderate adsorptive and reactive activity of Pt(111).  相似文献

Ni/Pt(111) bimetallic surfaces: unique chemistry at monolayer ni coverage.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We have utilized the dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of cyclohexene as probe reactions to compare the chemical reactivity of Ni overlayers that are grown epitaxially on a Pt(111) surface. The reaction pathways of cyclohexene were investigated using temperature-programmed desorption, high-resolution electron energy loss (HREELS), and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. Our results provide conclusive spectroscopic evidence that the adsorption and subsequent reactions of cyclohexene are unique on the monolayer Ni surface as compared to those on the clean Pt(111) surface or the thick Ni(111) film. HREELS and NEXAFS studies show that cyclohexene is weakly pi-bonded on monolayer Ni/Pt(111) but di-sigma-bonded to Pt(111) and Ni(111). In addition, a new hydrogenation pathway is detected on the monolayer Ni surface at temperatures as low as 245 K. By exposing the monolayer Ni/Pt(111) surface to D2 prior to the adsorption of cyclohexene, the total yield of the normal and deuterated cyclohexanes increases by approximately 5-fold. Furthermore, the reaction pathway for the complete decomposition of cyclohexene to atomic carbon and hydrogen, which has a selectivity of 69% on the thick Ni(111) film, is nearly negligible (<2%) on the monolayer Ni surface. Overall, the unique chemistry of the monolayer Ni/Pt(111) surface can be explained by the weaker interaction between adsorbates and the monolayer Ni film. These results also point out the possibility of manipulating the chemical properties of metals by controlling the overlayer thickness.  相似文献

Reaction kinetics studies were conducted for the conversions of ethanol and acetic acid over silica-supported Pt and Pt/Sn catalysts at temperatures from 500 to 600 K. Addition of Sn to Pt catalysts inhibits the decomposition of ethanol to CO, CH4, and C2H6, such that PtSn-based catalysts are active for dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde. Furthermore, PtSn-based catalysts are selective for the conversion of acetic acid to ethanol, acetaldehyde, and ethyl acetate, whereas Pt catalysts lead mainly to decomposition products such as CH4 and CO. These results are interpreted using density functional theory (DFT) calculations for various adsorbed species and transition states on Pt(111) and Pt3Sn(111) surfaces. The Pt3Sn alloy slab was selected for DFT studies because results from in situ (119)Sn M?ssbauer spectroscopy and CO adsorption microcalorimetry of silica-supported Pt/Sn catalysts indicate that Pt-Sn alloy is the major phase present. Accordingly, results from DFT calculations show that transition-state energies for C-O and C-C bond cleavage in ethanol-derived species increase by 25-60 kJ/mol on Pt3Sn(111) compared to Pt(111), whereas energies of transition states for dehydrogenation reactions increase by only 5-10 kJ/mol. Results from DFT calculations show that transition-state energies for CH3CO-OH bond cleavage increase by only 12 kJ/mol on Pt3Sn(111) compared to Pt(111). The suppression of C-C bond cleavage in ethanol and acetic acid upon addition of Sn to Pt is also confirmed by microcalorimetric and infrared spectroscopic measurements at 300 K of the interactions of ethanol and acetic acid with Pt and PtSn on a silica support that had been silylated to remove silanol groups.

Methanol was used as a probe molecule to examine the reforming activity of oxygenates on NiPt(111) and CoPt(111) bimetallic surfaces, utilizing density functional theory (DFT) modeling, temperature-programmed desorption, and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). DFT results revealed a correlation between the methanol and methoxy binding energies and the surface d-band center of various NiPt(111) and CoPt(111) bimetallic surfaces. Consistent with DFT predictions, increased production of H2 and CO from methanol was observed on a Ni surface monolayer on Pt(111), designated as Ni-Pt-Pt(111), as compared to the subsurface monolayer Pt-Ni-Pt(111) surface. HREELS was used to verify the presence and subsequent decomposition of methoxy intermediates on NiPt(111) and CoPt(111) bimetallic surfaces. On Ni-Pt-Pt(111) the methoxy species decomposed to a formaldehyde intermediate below 300 K; this species reacted at approximately 300 K to form CO and H2. On Co-Pt-Pt(111), methoxy was stable up to approximately 350 K and decomposed to form CO and H2. Overall, trends in methanol reactivity on NiPt(111) bimetallic surfaces were similar to those previously determined for ethanol and ethylene glycol.  相似文献

Temperature programmed desorption, high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), and density functional theory (DFT) were used to investigate the adsorption and reaction of ethylene oxide (EO) on the Ag(111) surface. When EO is dosed onto Ag(111) at 140 K it adsorbs molecularly, desorbing without reaction at approximately 200 K. On the other hand, when EO is dosed at 250 K, the ring-opening of EO is activated, and a stable surface intermediate is formed. This intermediate reacts at 300 K to re-form EO plus a few other products. HREELS and DFT studies suggest that this stable intermediate is a surface oxametallacycle. Moreover, the activation energies observed for the reaction of the oxametallacycle to form EO are in an excellent agreement with the values reported for the steady-state ethylene epoxidation process. This work represents the first demonstration of surface oxametallacycle ring-closure to form EO. Comparison of the spectroscopic results obtained from silver single crystals and supported catalysts strongly suggests that oxametallacycles are important intermediates in silver-catalyzed ethylene epoxidation.  相似文献

Alloying Pt with other metals is an effective strategy to tune its performance towards selective hydrogenation reactions. Herein, we have demonstrated a process to screen Pt-based alloys for inhibition of butadiene over-hydrogenation with a model comprising isolated single atoms (ISA) embedded into Pt(111). DFT calculations reveal that the diffusion energy barrier of H co-adsorbed with 1-butene is a key parameter for the screening. The output from the ISA model was validated by testing several typical Pt-based alloys towards butadiene hydrogenation. Furthermore, an unexpected higher selectivity to cis-2-butene compared to the trans isomer and 1-butene over the PtZn alloy was explored employing the ISA model.  相似文献

The prediction of a reaction mechanism and the identification of the corresponding chemical intermediates is a major challenge in surface science and heterogeneous catalysis, due to a complex network of elementary steps and surface species. Here we demonstrate how to overcome this difficulty by tracking the temperature dependent formation of the initial reaction intermediates and identifying the decomposition pathways in the case of prenal, an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde, on the Pt(111) model catalyst surface by combining vibrational spectroscopy, thermal reaction/desorption spectroscopy (TPRS) experiments and detailed theoretical analysis. TPRS characterization of this reaction up to 600 K shows a series of desorption states of H(2) (~280 K, 410 K and 473 K) and CO (~414 K), giving valuable insights into the sequence of elementary steps suggesting that the loss of hydrogen and the carbonyl functions are among the first elementary steps. HREELS experiments recorded after annealing to specific temperatures result in complex spectra, which can be assigned to several subsequently formed and transformed surface intermediates. Starting from stable prenal adsorption structures, complementary DFT calculations allow the determination of the most likely reaction pathway for the initial decomposition steps and the identification of the corresponding intermediates by comparison with HREELS. The decomposition occurs from the strongly bonded prenal adsorption structures via a dehydro-η(3)-triσ(CCC)-H1 intermediate to the highly stable η(1)-isobutylidyne species at high temperatures.  相似文献

The dehydrogenation and decarbonylation of ethylene glycol and ethanol were studied using temperature programmed desorption (TPD) on Pt(111) and Ni/Pt(111) bimetallic surfaces, as probe reactions for the reforming of oxygenates for the production of H2 for fuel cells. Ethylene glycol reacted via dehydrogenation to form CO and H2, corresponding to the desired reforming reaction, and via total decomposition to produce C(ad), O(ad), and H2. Ethanol reacted by three reaction pathways, dehydrogenation, decarbonylation, and total decomposition, producing CO, H2, CH4, C(ad), and O(ad). Surfaces prepared by deposition of a monolayer of Ni on Pt(111) at 300 K, designated Ni-Pt-Pt(111), displayed increased reforming activity compared to Pt(111), subsurface monolayer Pt-Ni-Pt(111), and thick Ni/Pt(111). Reforming activity was correlated with the d-band center of the surfaces and displayed a linear trend for both ethylene glycol and ethanol, with activity increasing as the surface d-band center moved closer to the Fermi level. This trend was opposite to that previously observed for hydrogenation reactions, where increased activity occurred on subsurface monolayers as the d-band center shifted away from the Fermi level. Extrapolation of the correlation between activity and the surface d-band center of bimetallic systems may provide useful predictions for the selection and rational design of bimetallic catalysts for the reforming of oxygenates.  相似文献

Hydrogen oxidation on Pt (111) surface is modeled by density functional theory (DFT). Previous DFT calculations showed too large O2 dissociation barriers, but we find them highly coverage dependent: when the coverage is low, dissociation barriers close to experimental values (approximately 0.3 eV) are obtained. For the whole reaction, a new pathway involving hydroperoxyl (OOH) intermediate is found, with the highest reaction barrier of only approximately 0.4 eV. This may explain the experimental observation of catalytic water formation on Pt (111) surface above the H2O desorption temperature of 170 K, despite that the direct reaction between chemisorbed O and H atoms is a highly activated process with barrier approximately 1 eV as previous calculations showed.  相似文献

Earth-abundant transition metal catalysis has emerged as an important alternative to noble transition metal catalysis in hydrogenation reactions. However, there has been no Earth-abundant transition metal catalyzed hydrogenation of thioamides reported so far, presumably due to the poisoning of catalysts by sulfur-containing molecules. Herein, we described the first manganese-catalyzed hydrogenative desulfurization of thioamides to amines or imines. The key to success is the use of MnBr(CO)5 instead of commonly-employed pincer-manganese catalysts, together with simple NEt3 and CuBr. This protocol features excellent selectivity on sole cleavage of the C=S bond of thioamides, in contrast to the only known Ru-catalyzed hydrogenation of thioamides, and unprecedented chemo-selectivity tolerating vulnerable functional groups such as nitrile, ketone, aldehyde, ester, sulfone, nitro, olefin, alkyne and heterocycle, which are usually susceptible to common hydride-type reductive protocols.  相似文献

Superior catalytic performance for selective 1,3-butadiene (1,3-BD) hydrogenation can usually be achieved with supported bimetallic catalysts. In this work, Pt−Co nanoparticles and Pt nanoparticles supported on metal–organic framework MIL-100(Fe) catalysts (MIL=Materials of Institut Lavoisier, PtCo/MIL-100(Fe) and Pt/MIL-100(Fe)) were synthesized via a simple impregnation reduction method, and their catalytic performance was investigated for the hydrogenation of 1,3-BD. Pt1Co1/MIL-100(Fe) presented better catalytic performance than Pt/MIL-100(Fe), with significantly enhanced total butene selectivity. Moreover, the secondary hydrogenation of butenes was effectively inhibited after doping with Co. The Pt1Co1/MIL-100(Fe) catalyst displayed good stability in the 1,3-BD hydrogenation reaction. No significant catalyst deactivation was observed during 9 h of hydrogenation, but its catalytic activity gradually reduces for the next 17 h. Carbon deposition on Pt1Co1/MIL-100(Fe) is the reason for its deactivation in 1,3-BD hydrogenation reaction. The spent Pt1Co1/MIL-100(Fe) catalyst could be regenerated at 200 °C, and regenerated catalysts displayed the similar 1,3-BD conversion and butene selectivity with fresh catalysts. Moreover, the rate-determining step of this reaction was hydrogen dissociation. The outstanding activity and total butene selectivity of the Pt1Co1/MIL-100(Fe) catalyst illustrate that Pt−Co bimetallic catalysts are an ideal alternative for replacing mono-noble-metal-based catalysts in selective 1,3-BD hydrogenation reactions.  相似文献

The adsorption and hydrogenation of carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) on a Pt (111) surface have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT). We have performed calculations on the adsorption energies and structures of CCl(4) on four different adsorption sites of a Pt (111) surface using the full adsorbate geometry optimization method. The results show that the adsorption energy of all of the potential sites is less than -17 kcal/mol, which indicates that CCl(4) is physiosorbed on a Pt (111) surface through van der Waals interactions. The dissociation and hydrogenation pathways were investigated by a transition state search. For the Pt(15), Pt(19), and Pt(25) cluster surfaces, the activation energies of dissociation obtained in this work are 15.69, 16.94, and 16.77 kcal/mol, respectively. The hydrogenation of CCl(3). was studied at the on-top site of the Pt(15) cluster, and the calculated activation energy is 5.06 kcal/mol. The small activation energies indicate that the Pt (111) surface has high catalytic activity for the CCl(4) hydrogenation reaction. In addition, the Hirshfeld population analysis reveals that the charge transfer from the Pt (111) surface to the adsorbates occurs in both the dissociation and hydrogenation pathways.  相似文献

The electronic and chemical (adsorption) properties of bimetallic Ag/Pt(111) surfaces and their modification upon surface alloy formation, that is, during intermixing of Ag and Pt atoms in the top atomic layer upon annealing, were studied by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and, using CO as probe molecule, by temperature‐programmed desorption (TPD) and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), respectively. The surface alloys are prepared by deposition of sub‐monolayer Ag amounts on a Pt(111) surface at room temperature, leading to extended Ag monolayer islands on the substrate, and subsequent annealing of these surfaces. Surface alloy formation starts at ≈600–650 K, which is evidenced by core‐level shifts (CLSs) of the Ag(3d5/2) signal. A distinct change of the CO adsorption properties is observed when going to the intermixed PtAg surface alloys. Most prominently, we find the growth of a new desorption feature at higher temperature (≈550 K) in the TPD spectra upon surface alloy formation. This goes along with a shift of the COad‐related IR bands to lower wave number. Surface alloy formation is almost completed after heating to 700 K.  相似文献

H2S decomposition on the clean and (2 × 2)-S covered Pt(111) surfaces has been characterized using high-resolution electron energy loss (HREELS) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) spectroscopies. On the Pt(111)-(2 × 2)-S surface, a mixture of molecular H2S and sulfhydryl (SH) species forms following H2S adsorption at 110 K. The molecular H2S desorbs at 140 K leaving a (2 × 2)-S overlayer saturated with SH; the SH is stable up to 190 K. On the clean Pt(111) surface, a mixture of atomic sulfur, SH and chemisorbed molecular H2S is formed following H2S adsorption at 110 K. On the clean surface, adsorbed SH decomposes near 150 K. We report here the first definitive observation of an adsorbed sulfhydryl species on a metal surface.  相似文献
