The synthesis and characterization of catalysts based on nanomaterials, supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) for ethylene glycol (EG) oxidation is investigated. Platinum (Pt) and platinum-ruthenium (Pt-Ru) nanoparticles are deposited on surface-oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes [Pt/CNT; Pt-Ru/CNT] by the aqueous solution reduction of the corresponding metal salts with glycerol. The electrocatalytic properties of the modified electrodes for oxidation of ethylene glycol in acidic solution have been studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), and excellent activity is observed. This may be attributed to the small particle size of the metal nanoparticles, the efficacy of carbon nanotubes acting as good catalyst support and uniform dispersion of nanoparticles on CNT surfaces. The nature of the resulting nanoparticles decorated multiwalled carbon nanotubes are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analysis. The cyclic voltammetry response indicates that Pt-Ru/CNT catalyst displays a higher performance than Pt/CNT, which may be due to the efficiency of the nature of Ru species in Pt-Ru systems. The fabricated Pt and Pt-Ru nanoparticles decorated CNT electrodes shows better catalytic performance towards ethylene glycol oxidation than the corresponding nanoparticles decorated carbon electrodes, demonstrating that it is more promising for use in fuel cells.

Electro-oxidation of methanol was studied on titanium supported nanocrystallite Pt and Ptx-Sny catalysts prepared by electrodeposition techniques. Their electro-catalytic activities were studied in 0.5mol/L H2SO4 and compared to those of a smooth Pt, Pt/Pt and Pt-Sn/Pt electrodes. Platinum was deposited on Ti by galvanostatic and potentiostatic techniques. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) techniques were applied in order to investigate the chemical composition and the phase structure of the modified electrodes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the surface morphology and to correlate the results obtained from the two electrochemical deposition methods. Results show that modified Pt/Ti electrodes prepared by the two methods have comparable performance and enhanced catalytic activity towards methanol electro-oxidation compared to Pt/Pt and smooth Pt electrodes. Steady state Tafel plots experiments show a higher rate of methanol oxidation on a Pt/Ti catalyst than that on a smooth Pt.  Introduction of a small amount of Sn deposited with Pt improves the catalytic activity and the stability of prepared electrode with time as indicated from the cyclic votlammetry and the chronoamperometric experiments. The effect of variations in the composition for binary catalysts of the type Ptx-Sny/Ti towards the methanol oxidation reaction is reported. Consequently, the Ptx-Sny/Ti (x∶y (8∶1), molar ratio) catalyst is a very promising one for methanol oxidation.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of ammonia on Pt(111) and Pt(100) has been studied using voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and in situ infrared spectroscopy. The oxidative adsorption of ammonia results in the formation of NH(x) (x = 0-2) adsorbates. On Pt(111), ammonia oxidation occurs in the double-layer region and results in the formation of NH and, possibly, N adsorbates. The experimental current transients show a hyperbolic decay (t(-1)), which indicates strong lateral (repulsive) interactions between the (reacting) species. On Pt(100), the NH(2) adsorbed species is the stable intermediate of ammonia oxidation. Stabilization of the NH and NH(2) fragments on Pt(111) and Pt(100), respectively, is in an interesting agreement with recent theoretical predictions. The Pt(111) surface shows extremely low activity in ammonia oxidation to dinitrogen, thus indicating that neither NH nor N (strongly) adsorbed species are active in dinitrogen production. Neither nitrous oxide nor nitric oxide is the product of ammonia oxidation on Pt(111) at potentials up to 0.9 V, as deduced from the in situ infrared spectroscopy measurements. The Pt(100) surface is highly active in dinitrogen production. This process is characterized by a Tafel slope of 30 mV decade(-1), which is explained by a rate-determining dimerization of NH(2) fragments followed by a fast decay of the resulting surface-bound hydrazine to dinitrogen. Therefore, the high activity of the Pt(100) surface for ammonia oxidation to dinitrogen is likely to be related to its ability to stabilize the NH(2) adsorbate.

In this study, a platinum electrode was coated with NiZn layer (Pt/NiZn) in a nickel-zinc bath by electrodeposition for use as anode material for methanol electrooxidation in alkaline solution. The electrode prepared was etched in a concentrated alkaline solution (30% NaOH) to produce a porous and electrocatalytic surface suitable for use in the methanol electrooxidation (Pt/NiZn). The surface morphologies and compositions of coating before and after alkaline leaching were determined by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The effect of NiZn coated platinum electrode for methanol electrooxidation was investigated in 1 M NaOH solution by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Methanol electrooxidation on Pt/NiZn electrode was studied at various temperatures and potential scan rates. The results showed that Pt/NiZn electrode behaved as an efficient catalyst for the electrooxidation of methanol in alkaline medium.

We demonstrate the use of molecular monolayers to enhance the nucleation of electrocatalytically active platinum nanocrystals onto carbon nanotubes. The multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) is embedded within the polysiloxane shell with large amounts of hydrophilic amino groups outside after the siloxane is polymerized on the nanotube surfaces. Subsequent deposition of platinum nanoparticles led to high densities of 2- to 5-nm diameter Pt nanocrystals uniformly deposited along the length of the carbon nanotubes. The structure and nature of the resulting Pt/Si–MWNT composites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical measurements show that the molecular monolayers do not impede redox behavior of the electrode, and measurements of the electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol show very high catalytic efficiency.

The increasing occurrence of pesticide micropollutants highlights the need for innovative water treatment technologies, particularly for small-community and household applications. Electro-oxidation is being widely studied in this area, unfortunately, safe, stable and efficient electrocatalytic anodes without released heavy metal ions are still highly required. In this study, we fabricated a Pt/Ti anode by high energy pulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS-PtTi) which was used to decompose dichlorvos (DDVP) and azoxystrobin (AZX) in water. The results show that the reaction rate constant (kENR) on HIPIMS was 35.7 min–1 (DDVP) and 41.3 min–1 (AZX), respectively, superior to electroplating Pt/Ti anode (EP-PtTi). The identification of radicals (?OH, 1O2, ?O2?) and micro-area analyses evidenced that Pt atoms were embedded into the TiO2 lattice on the surface of Ti plate by high-energy ions, which resulted in more adsorbed hydroxyls, and higher production of ?OH under polarization conditions. Besides, the electro-oxidation intermediates of DDVP and AZX were identified and the degradation pathways were speculated: (1) indirect oxidation dominated by ?OH attack, and (2) direct electron transfer reaction of pesticides on the anode surface. The cooperated reactions achieve the complete degradation and highly efficient mineralization of DDVP and AZX.

Electrocatalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide and methanol at Pt nanoparticles confined in mesoporous molecular sieve SBA-15 was studied by using cyclic voltammetry and in situ FTIR spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetric studies revealed that the Pt nanoparticles confined in SBA-15 exhibit a high activity in the presence of hydrated phase consisting of SiO2 in the SBA-15. In situ FTIR spectroscopy results discovered that IR absorption of CO adsorbed on Pt nanoparticles confined in SBA-15 has been enhanced 11-fold, and the full-width at half-maximum of the CO band is significantly increased, in comparison with IR feature of CO adsorbed on a bulk Pt electrode. The linearly adsorbed CO species is the only intermediate derived from dissociative adsorption of methanol, which is more readily oxidized to form CO2 in the aid of the active oxide in SBA-15.This paper is dedicated to Professor G. Horanyi on the occasion of his 70th birthday and in recognition of his outstanding contribution to electrochemistry

Platinum dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles (DENs) were prepared within fourth-generation, hydroxyl-terminated, poly(amidoamine) dendrimers and immobilized on glassy carbon electrodes using an electrochemical coupling strategy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and electrochemical experiments confirmed that the Pt DENs were about 1.4 nm in diameter and that they remained within the dendrimer following surface immobilization. The resulting Pt DEN films were electrocatalytically active for the oxygen reduction reaction. The films were also robust, surviving up to 50 consecutive cyclic voltammograms and sonication.

Pt and Au nanoparticles with controlled Pt?:?Au molar ratios and PtAu nanoparticle loadings were successfully self-assembled onto poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA)-functionalized graphene (PDDA-G) as highly effective electrocatalysts for formic acid oxidation in direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFCs). The simultaneously assembled Pt and Au nanoparticles on PDDA-G showed superb electrocatalytic activity for HCOOH oxidation, and the current density associated with the preferred dehydrogenation pathway for the direct formation of CO(2) through HCOOH oxidation on a Pt(1)Au(8)/PDDA-G (i.e., a Pt?:?Au ratio of 1?:?8) is 32 times higher than on monometallic Pt/PDDA-G. The main function of the Au in the mixed Pt and Au nanoparticles on PDDA-G is to facilitate the first electron transfer from HCOOH to HCOO(ads) and the effective spillover of HCOO(ads) from Au to Pt nanoparticles, where HCOO(ads) is further oxidized to CO(2). The Pt?:?Au molar ratio and PtAu nanoparticle loading on PDDA-G supports are the two critical factors to achieve excellent electrocatalytic activity of PtAu/PDDA-G catalysts for the HCOOH oxidation reactions.

The electrochemistry of L-tyrosine was studied by cyclic voltammetry at a glassy carbon electrode. Although L-tyrosine itself showed very poor electrochemical response, the response could be greatly enhanced by using 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxy (HO-TEMPO) as a mediator that enables a sensitive determination of the substrate. An electrocatalytic EC' mechanism with the oxoammonium ion of HO-TEMPO as the active oxidant is proposed. The catalytic rate constant was determined to be 2.0 x 10(4) M(-1) s(-1) by using chronoamperometry.

Butylphenyl-functionalized Pt nanoparticles (Pt-BP) with an average core diameter of 2.93 ± 0.49 nm were synthesized by the co-reduction of butylphenyl diazonium salt and H(2)PtCl(4). Cyclic voltammetric studies of the Pt-BP nanoparticles showed a much less pronounced hysteresis between the oxidation currents of formic acid in the forward and reverse scans, as compared to that on naked Pt surfaces. Electrochemical in situ FTIR studies confirmed that no adsorbed CO, a poisoning intermediate, was generated on the Pt-BP nanoparticle surface. These results suggest that functionalization of the Pt nanoparticles by butylphenyl fragments effectively blocked the CO poisoning pathway, most probably through third-body effects, and hence led to an apparent improvement of the electrocatalytic activity in formic acid oxidation.

Well-defined Pt-nanoparticles with an average diameter of 1 nm supported on a series of zeolite Y samples containing different monovalent (H+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+) and divalent (Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+) cations have been used as model systems to investigate the effect of promotor elements in the oxidation of CO in excess oxygen. Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy measurements allowed us to study the temperature-programmed desorption of CO from supported Pt nanoparticles to monitor the electronic changes in the local environment of adsorbed CO. It was found that the red shift of the linear Pt-coordinated CO vibration compared to that of gas-phase CO increases with an increasing cation radius-to-charge ratio. In addition, a systematic shift from linear (L) to bridge (B) bonded CO was observed for decreasing Lewis acidity, as expressed by the Kamlet-Taft parameter alpha. A decreasing alpha results in an increasing electron charge on the framework oxygen atoms and therefore an increasing electron charge on the supported Pt nanoparticles. This observation was confirmed with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and the intensity of the experimental Pt atomic XAFS correlates with the Lewis acidity of the cation introduced. Furthermore, it was found that the CO coverage increases with increasing electron density on the Pt nanoparticles. This increasing electron density was found to result in an increased CO oxidation activity; i.e., the T(50%) for CO oxidation decreases with decreasing alpha. In other words, basic promotors facilitate the chemisorption of CO on the Pt particles. The most promoted CO oxidation catalyst is a Pt/K-Y sample, which has a T(50%) of 390 K and a L:B intensity ratio of 2.7. The obtained results provide guidelines to design improved CO oxidation catalysts.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of hydrazine has been studied on glassy carbon, Pt and Au electrodes modified by cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) using cyclic voltammetry and rotating disc techniques. It has been shown that the oxidation of hydrazine to nitrogen occurs at the potential coinciding with that of Co(II) to Co(III) transformation in a CoHCF film, where no oxidation signal is observed at a bare glassy carbon electrode. A Tafel plot, derived from RDE voltammograms, exhibits a slope of 150 mV, indicating a one-electron charge transfer process to be the rate-limiting step. The electrocatalytic efficiency of the modified electrode towards hydrazine oxidation depends on solution pH, and the optimum range was found to be located between pH 5 and pH 7. The kinetic behaviour and location of the electrocatalytic process were examined using the W.J. Albery diagnosis table, and it was concluded that the reaction has either a “surface” or a “layer” reaction mechanism. Pt- and Au-CoHCF-modified electrodes show no significant electrocatalytic activity towards hydrazine oxidation.
