In this article we present a simple and elegant algebraic proof of Pascal’s hexagon theorem which requires only knowledge of basics on conic sections without theory of projective transformations. Let X be a real linear space and ${M: \mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}}$ be continuous and multiplicative. We determine the solutions ${f: X \rightarrow \mathbb{R}}$ of the functional equation $$f(x+M(f(x))y) f(x) f(y) [f(x+M(f(x))y) - f(x)f(y)] = 0$$ that are continuous on rays. In this way we generalize our previous results concerning the continuous solutions of this equation. In 1976 I was looking for a suitable subject for my PhD thesis. My thesis advisor Arie Hordijk and I found a lot of inspiration in Derman’s book (Finite state Markovian decision processes, Academic Press, New York, 1970). Since that time I was interested in linear programming methods for Markov decision processes. In this article I will describe some results in this area on the following topics: (1) MDPs with the average reward criterion; (2) additional constraints; (3) applications. Let cd(G) be the set of irreducible complex character degrees of a finite group G. The Taketa problem conjectures that if G is a finite solvable group, then ${{\rm dl}(G) \leqslant |{\rm cd} (G)|}$ , where dl(G) is the derived length of G. In this note, we show that this inequality holds if either all nonlinear irreducible characters of G have even degrees or all irreducible character degrees are odd. Also, we prove that this inequality holds if all irreducible character degrees have exactly the same prime divisors. Finally, Isaacs and Knutson have conjectured that the Taketa problem might be true in a more general setting. In particular, they conjecture that the inequality ${{\rm dl}(N) \leqslant |{\rm cd} {(G \mid N)}|}$ holds for all normal solvable subgroups N of a group G. We show that this conjecture holds if ${{\rm cd} {(G \mid N')}}$ is a set of non-trivial p–powers for some fixed prime p. 相似文献

Michael Bergmann has argued that internalist accounts of justification face an insoluble dilemma. This paper begins with an explanation of Bergmann??s dilemma. Next, I review some recent attempts to answer the dilemma, which I argue are insufficient to overcome it. The solution I propose presents an internalist account of justification through direct acquaintance. My thesis is that direct acquaintance can provide subjective epistemic assurance without falling prey to the quagmire of difficulties that Bergmann alleges all internalist accounts of justification cannot surmount. 相似文献
